NORTHLAND, A CHURCH DISTRIBUTED

With bitterness and true compunction of heart I acknowledge before Thee gross and selfish thoughts that I so often allow to enter my mind and to influence my deeds. I confess, O God – …that often I deceive myself as to where my plain duty lies; …that often, by concealing my real motives, I pretend to be better than I am; …that often my affection for my friends is only a refined form of caring for myself; …that often my sparing of my enemy is due to nothing more than cowardice. O holy One, let the fire of Thy love enter my heart, and burn up all this coil of meanness and hypocrisy, and make my heart as the heart of a little child. – John Baillie

Preaching the Message on Sunday Evening: Sean Cooper Sean Cooper is Northland’s minister of service and equipping. After attending the church while in college, he grew interested in Northland’s passion for intergenerational leadership and the opportunity to equip a new generation of Kingdom leaders. In 1996, he initiated overseas trips that would eventually integrate the Student Ministries into an international network of student leaders. Having grown up in Brazil as the child of missionaries, Sean thrives on the diversity of cultures — especially the opportunity churches have to learn from each other in expanding God’s Kingdom. When not traveling or working on overseas projects, Sean is often found among college students and young adults, discussing cultural anthropology, social justice issues or the band U2. He and his wife, Addie, are parents to a daughter, Emerson, and a son, Wyatt. Sean says the “community that celebrates Jesus” is what first drew him to Northland. “This church is a catalyst for sending us back into the community to share the Good News of Jesus with others.”

PREACHING THE MESSAGE AT NORTHLAND AT MOUNT DORA

ash wednesday service

Bill Chapman, Northland at Mount Dora site minister

Resolved: ‘We Will Serve the Lord’ Scripture focus:

Joshua 24:14-15 (NIV) Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.

H

appy Valentine’s Day! Northlander, God loves you deeply and wants to teach you how to love Him better! Today in Mount Dora, we continue Dr. Hunter’s preaching theme of Building Heaven-Like Families, and my writing series on new year’s resolutions for 2010. The message for this Valentine’s Day is “Resolved: We Will Serve the Lord.” The Old Testament book of Joshua is an exciting book of faithfulness and success for God’s people. After 40 years of wilderness wandering, the Israelites entered the land of Canaan. They served and obeyed the Lord, and He led them to take complete possession of the Promised Land. In His own words, “I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant” (Joshua 24:13). In the closing chapter of Joshua, the Israelites gathered together to hear Joshua’s farewell speech. In it, Joshua challenges them to “throw away the foreign gods

that are among you and yield your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel” (v. 23). This challenge remains for every believer in Christ and his or her family. The Christian experiences the Promised Land of fellowship with God (John 14:23), eternal security (Luke 23:43), and a life of meaning and purpose (Psalm 139:1316). And yet we still cling to idols and, in so doing, taint our relationship with God. This sermon is designed to equip you to build a heavenlike family by throwing away the gods among you and yielding your hearts to the Lord. Some helpful Scriptures in this regard are shown below, and space is provided for you to take notes. Let us all get rid of our idols and recommit to love and serve the Lord! Helpful Scriptures: Joshua 24:11-27 Revelation 3:14-20 Revelation 7:9-17 Romans 7:21-25 Matthew 6:19

Isaiah 57:15 Exodus 33:7-10 Hebrews 10:14 John 21:15-23 Revelation 22:8-9

Wednesday, February 17 Gathering242: 6 p.m.— Congregational dinner, fellowship hall. 7 p.m. — Worship and teaching, sanctuary. Be led to the throne by the CREW352 youth band and then hear a special Ash Wednesday message from Bill Chapman, Northland at Mount Dora site minister. No need to sign up; just come with a dish to share and something you want to drink. Child care is available from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for children age 8 and under. If you would like to help with setup or cleanup for the Gathering, contact Bill Chapman (bill.chapman@northlandchurch.net or 352-434-4116).

Tommy Novak, Northland at West Oaks site minister

Grace Like Rain Scripture focus:

Ephesians 1:7 (NIV) In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. 2 Peter 1:5-9 (NIV) For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Romans 3:24 (NIV) … and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Answer: UNCONDITIONAL

With Friends Like This Mark 9:38-41 The disciples saw a man doing a miracle in the name of Jesus. That means he gave Jesus all the credit for the miracle. The disciple John said to Jesus, “We told the man to stop, because he was not one of us.” Jesus said, “Do not stop him. No one who does a miracle in My name can in the next moment say anything bad about Me. Anyone who is not against us is for us. What I’m about to tell you is true. Suppose someone gives you a cup of water in My name because you belong to Me. That one will certainly not go without a reward.” It is important to remember that while we may disagree with some people for the way they serve Jesus, He loves them and will reward all who belong to Him and do good in His name.

You think about that.

Draw a picture of yourself giving a cup of water to a thirsty person.

p Lenten Grou . . . Discussion Guide

Ash Wednesday Tradition

Gather with your family, a few friends or coworkers, or your current study group, and agree to go through the Lenten series together, using this discussion guide as a resource. It will be here for you each week. In addition, there will be a video clip each week as an additional tool to help you get into the topic. The video clip will be posted on Northland’s website — go to lent.northlandchurch.net.

Introductory Lesson

Best used by: February 14-20

Opener:

Wrap-up:

To get started, choose a well-known story (like The Three Bears), and try to tell it backward, one sentence at a time. Go around the group, and have each person add a sentence describing the previous event. The story ends with, “And she never went back to the three bears’ house again.” What sentence would come before that?

Together, read Isaiah 37:26, Ephesians 1:11-14 and 1 Corinthians 2:7.

Video introduction: If you are able, watch the provided video clip here. You can get it at www.northlandchurch.net. Click on “2 Stories” from our home page, and find the introductory video clip. The two Stories: When you tell your personal story, where do you begin — with you, with your parents, or with something else? Look at the Old and New Testament, at God’s story. In Scripture, there are really only two stories — the story of Christ and the story of Adam. Let’s begin, appropriately, by considering the story of Christ.

Interactive Learning: Read the following verses as a group, asking for volunteers to read them aloud: Psalm 90:2, Job 36:26, Exodus 3:14, John 8:58, and Revelation 1:8 and 22:13. • What do these verses tell you about God? • Considering what these verses tell you, when would you say God’s story began? Together, read the following passages, and see what each has to tell you about the story of man: Genesis 1:27 and Psalm 139. • What stands out to you about these verses? • When did the story of man begin? When did your own story of salvation begin? • How long has God known you, and how well does He know you?

• According to these verses and the others we have read, when did the plan of redemption begin? • What difference does it make in your life, in your day today, that Christ has been accomplishing your salvation since before time began? Before you close, discuss together: • What did you learn about God this week? • What did you learn about you this week? • What did you learn about us/each other this week?

Personal Challenge: As you go through your week, think about God’s plan of redemption. Think about what it required for Him to carry out His plan. Think about what it means to live in the freedom that He gives. • Have you acknowledged Him as your Redeemer? • What are some ways that you could respond to God’s gift of redemption this week?

Personal Contribution: Ask for a volunteer to bring a nugget to share with your group about this week’s lesson to next week’s conversation. He or she will be asked to share it at the beginning of the Interactive Learning next time you meet. It can be an additional Scripture passage, something from a commentary or other writing, a personal story – anything.

Wednesday, February 17, 7 p.m. Longwood sanctuary and live online!

In recent years, Ash Wednesday has become a favorite element of Northland’s Lenten season. This traditional day of fasting and confession begins the season we know as Lent — the 40 days prior to Easter. A traditional Ash Wednesday service culminates with the imposing of ashes, as each participant passes before an officiant to receive ashes on his or her forehead in the sign of a cross, along with the words from Genesis 3:19: “You are made from dust, and to dust you will return.” While this may seem like a rather morbid practice, for us who focus so often on God’s grace, it can be an honest, powerful reminder of how much we need that grace. This service may also be viewed live online at the Northland at Oviedo Community Center.

FAMILY Preaching the message this weekend:

Dr. Steve Brown, President of Key Life Network Our preacher at Longwood this weekend is Dr. Steve Brown, president of Key Life Network, a Christian radio network. Key Life’s 15-minute daily radio broadcast, as well as the one-minute “Think Spots,” are heard throughout the United States, Canada and internationally, featuring the Bible teaching of Dr. Brown. In addition to the radio programs, Key Life also offers cassette tapes, CDs and publications that teach and help listeners grow in the knowledge of God, producing life-changing results. “What makes this program unique,” according to its website (www.keylife.org), “is Steve’s humor, illustrations and practical application of Scripture, all with the focus on our freedom in Christ.” Dr. Brown also is a seminary professor and author. He previously served as a pastor for more than 25 years and now devotes much of his time to the radio broadcast. Dr. Brown has a variety of experiences and a unique perspective on life, but refuses to be a “guru.” He gives, in his teaching, the freedom to think. Overall, Steve has become known for his refreshing and practical biblical applications. Currently, Dr. Brown is serving as a professor of preaching at Reformed Theological Seminary in Oviedo. He sits on the board of the National Religious Broadcasters and Harvest USA and is the author of several books, including Born Free, When Being Good Isn’t Good Enough and When Your Rope Breaks. His articles appear in such magazines and journals as Leadership, Decision, Plain Truth and Today’s Christian Woman. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. BROWN, VISIT WWW.KEYLIFE.ORG.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

With Friends Like This! Scripture focus:

Mark 9:38-41 (ESV)

..................................................................................................................

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. For the one who is not against us is for us. For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.” NOTES:

Worship focus: .........................................................................................................

Worship Christ today for His limitless love. While we were still His enemies, He died for us. (Romans 5:10)

Christ’s love to me: Thank You, Jesus, that You are a friend of sinners.

Christ’s love through me: Let Your love shine through me that others might see my good works and glorify my Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

Christ’s love in my family: Help me to show Your love first to my family. Let my first response to each of them be love, so they will know that I am for them, not against them. (Mark 9:40)

Christ’s love to my world: Help me to love and do good to others, even my enemies. (Luke 6:35)
