VOLUME 11, ISSUE 8

I lift up my eyes to the hills — where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip — he who watches over you will not slumber … The LORD watches over you — the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not har m you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. -Psalm 121 (NIV)

A “Lot” of Changes Happening in Student Ministries By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations

I

t’s Friday night at Northland in Longwood, and dozens of students are preparing for battle in The Rink. Lines have been drawn, alliances have been formed. James Li, a world champion martial artist with numerous film and television credits under his (black) belt raises his hand to signal the beginning of combat ... “Ready. Set. DODGE BALL!”

mountdoranews

“ Without relationships, we don’t have the power to speak into students’ lives.”

A melee ensues, the likes of which would make even the steeliest gym coach cower in fear. James Li looks on, smiling. “Without relationships, we don’t have the power to speak into these students’ lives,” he explains. “That’s what we’re doing here—building relationships so that we can present the Gospel effectively.” Li recently returned to the role of director of student ministries after a three-year absence, during which time he used his background in the field of security to help the church establish safety guidelines and procedures. While he will continue to offer his expertise in that area, he is thrilled to be working in student ministries again with middle school minister Rudy Tamez, middle school coordinator Lauren Roberts, and high school minister Brian Katauskas. “I’ve always had a passion to reach young people with the Gospel and see them become disciples of Christ. Rudy and Brian and the student ministries team have the same passion, and they are amazing at what they do,” Li says. He is also joined by a team of young adult volunteers whom he calls “The Fantastic Four”: John Wood, Victor Assuncio, Leah Adams and Mark Augustine. “They have amazing hearts for students,” Li explains. “They are highly relational, great to hang out with ... they’re just a lot of fun.” The first change the team instituted was moving the high school ministry, also known as O2, from Sunday nights to Fridays at 7 p.m. (Northland’s middle school ministry, LUGRox, will continue to meet on Saturday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.) “We realized by having O2 on Sunday nights, the kids participating were mainly from families already in our church. We wanted to meet students where they are and give them a non-threatening forum so that they can invite their friends.” O2 begins with a snack and a group game (i.e. dodgeball), followed by a “Mat Chat” where students find a spot on the floor and are presented with a potent, 5-minute message presented by Li or one of the other leaders. Li explains, “We used to give a 25-minute talk. What

we do now instead is give a short talk and then engage with students immediately afterwards in a very natural but intentional way that drives the lesson home—building relationships around a theme.” The team recently implemented the new format. The results? “The first night, we doubled in size! The kids loved it. We’re really off to a good start,” Li says. High school students who want to delve deeper into the Scriptures still have the option of attending Doulos on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m. in Longwood. The sessions are led by Brian Katauskas, who recently earned his masters degree from Reformed Theological Seminary. “The emphasis is on servant-leader training,” Li says. “We’re always challenging students to take a step further. So Doulos is a chance to be equipped for ministry for the rest of their lives.” Meeting students where they are is also the motivation behind a new program called Lot 9, which uses games and sports to build relationships that lead to discipleship. As the name implies, Lot 9 is held in the parking lot across the street from Northland at Longwood twice per month—the first friday of the month for middle schoolers, and the last Friday of the month for high schoolers at 7 p.m. “The focus is on building relationships, not preaching,” Li explains. “For many kids, it’s intimidating to come to church because of the preconceptions. This is sort of a precursor to presenting the Gospel, meeting kids where they are and giving them a safe place to come and build relationships.” During the inaugural Lot 9 middle school gathering, leaders connected with a 12-year-old boy who had never visited the church before. The next night, he came to LUGRox and is now a regular part of Northland. Li concludes, “Pastor Joel always says, ‘Do what you can, where you are, with what you’ve got.’ We had an empty parking lot, and we had Lyman High and Milwee Middle School nearby. So we said, ‘Let’s use what we have to minister to these kids.’ It’s been amazing watching God at work so far.”

eing “the church” has meant the same thing for more than 2,000 years. So when I talk about how I have seen you being “the church,” what I am saying is I see Christ in you every day. “The church” is the people Acts 2 is referring to in verses 42-47 as they committed themselves to “being Jesus with skin on” (NIV): “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” So as I read verse 47b, I understand why “the church” grew and why people became followers of Christ. Even as we continue being “the church” with other believers in this area, I trust God will use all of us to bring the Kingdom of God to the West Orange area as it is in Heaven. Two weeks ago, as we met together with West Point Church

to watch the Super Bowl, there were people there who did not have a relationship with Christ, but saw something in that group that they wanted to be a part of. Also, women there from both churches are now talking about coming together for an event before Easter. Watch next week’s paper for more information for the women of West Oaks and West Point about this event. The men also are looking forward to doing something together, so look for information in the paper in the near future.

brothers and sisters in Christ, and you will want to do this on your own. So if we can help you in any way to gather with others for a meal, please let me or Tom Smith know, and we will do whatever we can to get you started. Remember, this was one of the ways the early church encouraged each other and grew together. And today, people are still drawn to these kinds of events and relationships. So keep doing what you are doing, and thank you for reflecting Christ as “the church.” >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

“ They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” -Acts 2:46-47 (NIV) Now, for our community of West Oaks, the Leadership Team is looking forward to having a meal together with each one of you. We have had sign-ups over the past three weekends, including this weekend, so I hope you take advantage of getting to know your Leadership Team. These meals fall right in line with what this passage is talking about: sharing your lives and loving one another. Our leaders not only want to share their lives with you, but they also want to share with you the vision of West Oaks for being “the church” in our community. As more and more of you are involved in these dinners, my hope is that many of you will see this as a powerful thing in your life, as a means of building relationships with other

God Transforming Lives in Peru by Rachel Williams

S

ometimes our mission field is in another country — and sometimes it’s right in our hometown. For Northland missionaries Cesar and Grace Cubas, it has been both. Cesar Cubas was a communist when his work took him to Pucallpa, in the jungles of his native Peru. At the time, he was wrestling with a deep longing to find inner peace. A friend invited him to a séance, where the medium advised Cesar to scatter yellow flowers in the cemetery. Cesar rejected this advice and returned to his rented room, still feeling restless and disillusioned. The next morning, he was awakened by familiar music. He realized it was music he had heard when he was a child while his mother listened to a Christian radio station. The music was coming from the evangelical church across the street. “When I heard that music,” Cesar said, “I felt the peace I had been longing for.” Drawn to the church, Cesar heard the gospel message, surrendered his life to Christ and was baptized. He grew spiritually as he worshiped and worked with those believers. At the same church, he Grace and Cesar Cubas. met Grace, an American missionary teacher. She had been raised in an evangelical family in Wheaton, Illinois, and since childhood sensed that God wanted her to be a missionary. After graduating from John Brown University, she joined the South American Mission (SAM) and left for Peru in 1966. In 1977, Cesar and Grace married. Cesar attended Moody Bible Institute, and in 1981, they returned to South America, this time assigned to Bolivia, where they ministered for more than 24 years. In 2005, Cesar and Grace felt led to begin a new ministry in Cesar’s hometown of Puerto Supe, Peru. They resolved to make it a holistic mission with three areas of community development: spiritual, social and economic. The vital part of this approach is establishing relationships, which

provide opportunities to tell people about Christ. The spiritual ministries include worship, Bible studies, discipleship groups and classes. Their economic focus is encouraging micro-businesses, and the social aspect of their ministry tackles multiple problems, including drug abuse, domestic violence and political corruption. God is transforming lives in Peru. Cesar and Grace have organized leadership seminars for public officials. In addition, schoolchildren — tomorrow’s leaders — are getting leadership and values training from a Christian perspective. Cesar and Grace have encouraged community support for the police by implementing a program similar to Neighborhood Watch. They successfully lobbied for the police to receive two new cars to replace their only police vehicle, an old pickup. On the economic front, many problems result from the widespread poverty. Unemployment is rampant. The town has tourism potential because the 5,000-year-old Caral culture is in its valley. Among the excavated items was a sandal made from rope and similar to those used by traditional fishermen today. Local women have learned to handcraft these sandals in modern styles. Cesar and Grace believe this is a potential industry and are seeking to open a market in the United States for these artisan sandals. They are looking for a U.S. partner to handle marketing and distribution. They also need help with seed capital to make this micro-business a reality. A relatively small investment can produce profitable returns and an eternal impact for the people of Puerto Supe. Cesar and Grace thank you for your help and inspiration. “There are many wonderful things that God is doing in this small fishing port on the coast of Peru,” Cesar said. Contact Cesar and Grace Cubas at gcubas@samlink.org or visit www.cubasconnections.com.

Answer: PROTECTION

Family Protection Romans 8:31-32 Paul faced many hard times, but he was not afraid because he knew he was a part of God’s forever family. Paul explained, “In all things God works for the good of those who love Him. He chose them to be saved – and everything that happens is a part of God’s plan.” Paul asks these next questions to show us that members of God’s forever family do not have to be afraid: “Since God is on our side, who can be against us? God did not spare His own Son. He gave Him up for us all. Then won’t He also freely give us everything else?” Paul knew that God watches over His family. God’s forever family can protect each other and help each other do our best at loving the Lord and loving our neighbor as ourselves.

And families do, too!

p Lenten Grou . . . Discussion Guide Gather with your family, a few friends or coworkers, or your current study group, and agree to go through the Lenten series together, using this discussion guide as a resource. It will be here for you each week. In addition, there will be a video clip each week as an additional tool to help you get into the topic. The video clip will be posted on Northland’s website — go to lent.northlandchurch.net.

Lesson 1

Best used by: February 21-27

Opener: What would you do if you found out today that all your debts — your house, your car, all your credit cards, even a nice little nest egg for your retirement — had been paid by an anonymous benefactor? How would that change your day, your week, your year and your life? Video introduction: If you are able, watch the provided video clip here. You can get it at www.northlandchurch.net. Click on “2 Stories” from the home page, and select the video clip for week 1. If you are unable to play the video, discuss with your group the similarity between God’s plan of redemption and the opening question, above. How is Christ our spiritual Benefactor? Personal contribution: Each week ask one volunteer to contribute something to the group: a response, a reflection, or a highlight of the Scripture or lesson from an outside source — some kind of nugget or interesting application the person was able to find relating to the passages that were discussed. Right now, ask the volunteer from last week to present his or her response, reflection or contribution, before you begin this week’s Bible reading. Then ask for a volunteer to commit to bring a personal contribution for next week. The two Stories: Now let’s look at this week’s segments of the stories of Christ and Adam. Together read Genesis 1:1-10, 27-28 and John 1:1-5, 14. • How does the passage from John reinforce that Jesus is God? • What was His role in creation? • What do these verses tell you about God, His nature, and His creation? • What does He say about His own creation? • Do you think that God created the universe believing that it would remain perfect and sinless? Was Adam’s sin a surprise to Him? • If not, then why do you think He created us anyway? • Having read through this and the introductory study, what have you learned about Christ and His redemption?

Personal Challenge: As you go through your week, think about redemption. Think about what it required for Jesus to purchase your salvation. Think about the fact that He knew you would inherit a sinful nature, but He chose to create you anyway. What do you do with love like that? How do you live out that love? • Have you thanked God for His unfailing attention, love and grace in your daily life? • Do you freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to God’s pleasure and disposal, to love God and love your neighbor as yourself?

. Closing Prayer:

Is There More to Life than This? One Man’s Story

I

f you have been wanting to participate in the much talked about Alpha Course but missed the introductory week, it isn’t too late to participate. Read the following excerpt from a letter by Bob Hahn, a Northlander and recent participant in the Alpha Course, and consider how this course could change your life and your relationship with Christ. Participating in the Alpha Course is one of the greatest things I have done. It unleashed in me the confidence to make positive changes in my life and to trust my God-ordained passions. A friend of mine, who had taken the course eight years ago when living in New Jersey, invited me to the Bear Grylls Alpha event at Northland. It turned out to be the invitation of a lifetime, to know Jesus in a deeply personal way. Bear Grylls is living out his faith and life as an adventure; that got my attention. Living with uncertainty, trusting in God’s personal plan and stretching to uncover my divine destiny is how I want to live my life. I am not a mountain climber, scaling under extreme conditions, but I am an entrepreneur with dreams. Navigating through today’s economy is risky. The Alpha message is relevant, whatever your spiritual perspective or religious denomination. As a practicing Catholic, the first time I came to Northland was for this Bear Grylls event. I have attended interdenominational Bible studies and facilitated retreats in both church and prison environments. I studied theology in college at a Jesuit university. Yet, it was the Alpha Course that touched my heart with the Good News of Jesus Christ. My high point each week was watching the presentations and participating in small group discussions, where I found myself drawn to ask and learn more. Nicky Gumbel, founder of Alpha, presented the Scriptures in a loving and authentic manner that opened my heart to experience the deeper presence of God in my life. Alpha’s open and encouraging atmosphere brought new friendships into my life.

Consider closing your time together by reading this prayer from the Lenten reader, 2 Stories: O God, who before the passion of thy only-begotten Son didst reveal his glory upon the holy mount: Grant unto us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. —The Book of Common Prayer

GOVERNING ELDERS

FAMILY Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences.
