ourteen people were baptized recently at the home of Ken and Diane Watkins, with Northland at West Oaks site minister Tommy Novak officiating. You, too, may be baptized by immersion or sprinkling as a public profession of your personal faith and trust in Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of your life (Matthew 28:19). I
’d like to invite you to a very special worship event at the Mount Dora site. We call it Unity. On the fourth Sunday of every month, students from many different middle and high schools come together to worship the Lord. Each Unity event is led by a different local worship band. This weekend, the Unity Band will bring us into the throne room of God. Though this gathering is geared toward youths, all are welcome to come. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the dress is casual. The event starts at 6 p.m. in the Mount Dora sanctuary (child care is unavailable). Come and join your Northland at Mount Dora family for Unity!
Gathering 242 is a great opportunity for us to be together as a family, share a meal together, converse, pray and encourage one another.

westoaksnews Hugues and Jodi Severe Prepare to Serve in Haiti TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
I
’m excited to pass on to you the following e-mail that I received from Hugues and Jodi Severe. Hugues is from Haiti, and he and Jodi, along with their precious son, Jovan, have a ministry called Grain d’Espoir pour Haiti, which many of you have supported and prayed for over the last year. We’ve been asking God to show them the right time to go to Haiti, and now is the time. Please be in prayer for their family and consider how you can join them as they serve God in a hurting country.
people do not read Kreyol, either. Very few Haitian people have ever heard the Word in their own native language. The Bibles we will distribute are solar- and crank-powered, so they do not require the purchase of batteries. We will give the Bibles to Christian leaders in the communities of Massey, Cap-Haitien and, hopefully, Port-au-Prince as well. Our hope is that people will congregate at each other’s homes to listen to the Word and many more than 20 people will be able to experience Christ in a new and exciting way.
1. Food distribution. We will distribute food to the families of the children in our education program and to as many other families as possible. We will provide to each family a month’s supply of rice, beans and cooking oil. We also will provide breakfast to the children on their way to school in the mornings.
3. Preparations for the 2010-11 school year. School recently resumed in Les Cayes and Massey. Many parents still are not comfortable sending their children to school for fear that the buildings are damaged and will collapse from an aftershock. We have heard that some of the schools in the area sustained minimal damage. We will visit the schools our children attend to talk with the principals and assess their needs and ability to remain open. We also will identify families in need and speak with them regarding their children in our education program next year. Families who have been displaced from Port-au-Prince and who have made Massey their new home will have first priority for any new sponsorships next year. There are 18 children in the program this year. We hope to have 25 next year. Please pray that people will join us by sponsoring a child. Looking ahead, this will be our greatest need this summer.
2. Bible distribution. Twenty audio Bibles were donated to Grain d’Espoir pour Haiti. These Bibles are spoken in Kreyol. Bibles in Haiti are generally printed in French, and church services are usually held in French. A large portion of the population does not read or speak French. Many
4. Anything else the Lord puts in our way. Through all we have heard and seen, we still do not have a real idea of what the situation is in Massey. We know it is difficult. We know people are hungry. We know food is very expensive. We know there has been a large influx of people from
Hugues and I bought our tickets to Haiti two weeks ago. We will be in Haiti from March 2 to March 7. While there, we have a few goals:
Port-au-Prince. We don’t know what is happening in the individual lives of the people living there. We don’t know exactly how things have changed. But we do know that God has called us to go and be of service in any way we can, and we suspect He has a much larger plan than we ever could. Many people have inquired as to what we will take with us and what items they can donate. Our baggage will be limited, as we are traveling on a commercial flight, but if you want to know how you can help, feel free to contact me (407-9297205 or jodisevere@graindespoirhaiti.com). For updates on our trip in March, check back at our Grain d’Espoir blog (www.graindespoirhaiti.com) and our personal family blog (www.severefamilyblog.blogspot.com). We may not have Internet service while in Haiti, but we will make every attempt to post updates when we can. If not, we will still write day-to-day updates and post them all when we get home. >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Serving in Haiti
Team member brings smiles to children’s faces By GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads
T
he second Haiti Disaster Response team returned this week. Two nurses and four Emotional & Spiritual Care Team members brought their individual skills, training and personalities together to form Northland’s team and help meet the expanding needs of Haiti’s people. We had no idea what we were going to face or how God would choose to use us, but our common qualification was that we were willing to do whatever He required. The mission progressed from that of the first Haiti trip, which was to provide critical surgical care at the hospital. Now the teams serve The team. hundreds from the community each day at the clinic established across the street. Several teams leave each morning to provide mobile clinic services to the community and the orphanages. In our first clinic, we saw 900 people. Below, two team members share their experiences serving in Haiti. Some of the team members diagnosed illnesses and dispensed medications. Some helped in the pharmacy and were nurses’ aides. Others worked to coordinate with the larger ACTS World Relief leaders. Me? I blew bubbles. Yeah, bubbles. My job on the team was the emotional and spiritual care of both the caregivers and those who came for care. At the clinics, I moved about the masses of people, waiting to see a medical professional, looking for those with more critical needs and moving them to the front of the line. They came early in the morning, and they waited in the heat without food or water. Some waited for most of the day, and many with little children. They were a strong and stoic people, but their faces reflected the tragedy they had witnessed, their eyes often staring off into nowhere. How could I be an encouragement to these people who were experiencing such misery and pain? How could I be Christ’s servant to these people, to these children, when I couldn’t even speak their language? Then I remembered the bottle of bubble solution I had put in my backpack. I had no clue how this was going to work, but I was out of ideas. I unscrewed the cap, lifted the wand to my lips, and I blew. Streams of bubbles filled the air. They floated into the crowd and across the lines of mothers with small children. At first, they were puzzled by what it was, and then it happened. I saw a transformation that
I could not have imagined. Their glazed eyes fixed on those bubbles, and smiles broke upon their faces. They giggled and swatted at the bubbles. The children’s faces lit up with joy as they chased after those bubbles. I started blowing bubbles with a passion. I worked my way along the lines and into the clumps of people and watched those bubbles do their magic. Children whom I could not get to shake my hand or even look at me suddenly were coming alive as I blew the bubbles in their direction. I held the wand up to their solemn faces and coaxed them to blow. They were bursting with smiles as they sent bubbles lofting into the air. I couldn’t treat their diseases, and I didn’t know how to bring comfort through words of caring or how to share Scripture, but I could, for this short while, cause them to forget all that they had seen, to forget for a moment the hardship of their life, and lose themselves in the delight of bubbles. I did get to minister and pray with many through an interpreter, and I found myself doing a host of odd jobs that just needed to be done, but I don’t think I did anything as significant as blowing those bubbles. There are so many needs in Haiti, and we can’t meet them all. Even what we can do often seems so small and insignificant. Yet, little is much when God is in it. Together as a team, we were able to accomplish much because we allowed God to minister through us. God ministers through doctors and nurses. He ministers through administrators and coordinators, through those involved in food preparation and water distribution. He ministers through His Scriptures … and sometimes God ministers through bubbles. — Ruth Sier, Emotional & Spiritual Care Team member I was so blessed to witness the miracle of daily provision. Each day we were able to see how God provides at the very moment when it is needed. The people of Haiti are in the position where they must live in faith each and every moment. This was such an inspiration for me and a blessing Emily was in awe of to see such faith in God’s provisions. the midst of tragedy. I feel honored to have met some of the most beautiful and thankful people in the world and to serve alongside team members who gave their whole hearts to these people each and every day. — Emily Tallman The needs are great, but the Haitian people are very resilient. They are joyful and thankful for the help and support they are receiving from the many volunteers. Answer: BOUNDARIES
God Made You Psalm 139:13-14 God made each of us in a different, special way on purpose. When He made us in our mother’s belly, God gave us certain gifts. He has plans for the way we would use those gifts to serve Him and build His Kingdom. King David described it this way in a song to God: “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” David compared the way God made you to the way someone knits or weaves a piece of clothing. To weave or knit, you must have a plan for the way the clothing will be used. You must make many choices in color, size, strength, and type of yarn or thread. God had a plan for you, and He made many choices in creating you to be special. God is the One who will help you discover the plan He has for your life.

Opener:
Wrap-up:
This week we are going to talk about the story from Genesis 3 about Eve and the serpent. What creatures most frighten you, snakes, mice or spiders? What makes them so frightening?
With which story do you most strongly identify so far, the story of Christ or the story of Adam?
Personal contribution: Each week ask one volunteer to contribute something to the group the following week: a response, reflection, or highlight of the Scripture or lesson from an outside source, some kind of nugget or interesting application he or she was able to find relating to the passages that were discussed. Right now, ask the volunteer from last week to present his or her response, reflection or contribution before you begin this week’s Bible reading. Then ask for a volunteer to commit to bring a personal contribution for next week. 2 Stories: Together read the next part of the stories of Christ and Adam from Genesis 3:1-24. Take turns reading to keep everyone engaged. Now look back at Genesis 2:15-17. • Did Eve accurately describe the boundaries God had given them? • What truths did the serpent tell, and what lies did he tell, as he spoke to Eve? • Which verse tells the ultimate temptation for Eve? How does 1 John 2:16 describe the ultimate temptations for us all? • What was the ultimate temptation for Adam? • How would you describe the effects of their disobedience on their relationship with God? Compare this to the effects of Gypsy’s disobedience on her relationship with her master in the story “The Fall” (from the video). Now read Paul’s description of the result of their sin in Romans 5:12-14. Do you remember the first time you realized your own sin nature? If so, can you describe that experience or share it with your group? Paul compares the result of one man’s sin with the result of one man’s death on the cross in Romans 5:17. Ask for a volunteer to restate this concept in his or her own words.
“Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults – unless, of course, you want the same treatment. That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. It’s easy to see a smudge on your neighbor’s face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own. Do you have the nerve to say, ‘Let me wash your face for you,’ when your own face is distorted by contempt? It’s this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part. Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor.” –Matthew 7:1-5 (The Message)
Lesson 2
Video Illustration: If you are able, watch the provided video clip here. You can get it at www.northlandchurch.net. Click on “2 Stories” from the home page, and select the video clip for week 2. If you are unable to play the video, download and discuss with your group the excerpt called “The Fall” from the week 2 resources.
Being a Peacemaker
• What did you learn about God this week? • What did you learn about you this week? • What did you learn about us/each other this week?
Prayer: Read Psalm 51 as your prayer today. Ask God to make you aware of your own need for confession this week.
Personal Challenge: How and when could you come to God in repentance, experiencing His forgiveness and entering His divine embrace? Where do you need to show His forgiveness to others? What does it mean to live a life of forgiveness and fellowship?

ll you have to do is watch the evening news to see that there is a dire shortage of peacemakers in the world. Clearly, God calls each of us to this important role, but knowing what to do and knowing how to do it are two very different things. In his book The Peacemaker, Ken Sande has done some groundbreaking work in laying out the steps one takes to learn this valuable life skill. We all come to the table with baggage. From that baggage of our life experiences, wiring, weaknesses, fears and training (or lack of training), we have formed a perspective on conflict. From this basic perspective, we react – every time – in predictable ways. According to Ken, there are three views on conflict. The first is that conflict is to be avoided at all costs. People with this perspective run from conflict. The second view is that the solution to conflict is to slug it out. Imagine getting these two people in a room to solve an argument! But the third, and the healthiest, view is that conflict is an opportunity – an opportunity to see God work in our hearts. While some people come into adulthood with this view, for most of us, it has to be learned. Ken takes on the challenge of teaching this perspective. To learn more about addressing conflict in a biblical manner, read The Peacemaker, by Ken Sande, or join the Northland Peaceseekers team for the next six-week session. FAMILY Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
“I AM...not myself” My Boundaries (The Value of the Individual) Scripture focus:
Psalm 139:13-14 (NASB)
..................................................................................................................
For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
NOTES:
Worship focus: .........................................................................................................
Worship Christ today as the “I AM.” Remember, from days of old, that He is God and none else. (Exodus 3:14; Isaiah 46:9)
summary prayer: .........................................................................................................
Jesus, I know that You love me, and that You created me just the way I am, on purpose. Before I had taken a single breath, before anyone had seen my face, You knew me. Now You sit at the right hand of the throne of God and intercede for my soul (Romans 8:34). You, the One who is worthy, see my worth as an individual, created in Your image. The boundaries that You place in my life are there to enable me to become the person You created me to be. Help me to learn who I am in You. Help me as I struggle with my identity, with my weaknesses, and with learning to effectively use the strengths that You have given me. Help me to see the way that You are shaping my soul, and help me to see others the way that You see them.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Building Heaven-like “Families” | “I AM...not myself” | Healthy in Every Way (The Meaning of Shalom) | James 1:2-4
