VOLUME 11, ISSUE 10

‘ Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only’: there is the heart of the matter. … In this area, one must not confuse what is central with byproducts. If you seek peace, you will not find it; if you seek Christ, you will find peace. If you seek joy, you will not find it; if you seek Christ, you will find joy. If you seek holiness, you will not find it; if you seek Christ, you will find holiness.” – D.A. Carson, in Worship: Adoration and Action

Conversations to Focus on ‘Matters of the Heart’ By Lauren Geiger Conversations Leadership Team

M

argi McCombs knows the importance of heartto-heart conversation. As executive director of Equipping at Northland, she is passionate about helping people discover the gifts that God has given them to give in relationship — a passion that will infuse her talk at the upcoming Conversations Women’s Gathering on Friday, March 19. Matters of the Heart, the latest in an ongoing series of women’s events, will focus on the importance of friendship and mentoring relationships. The event, which will feature a time of fellowship and worship, will be offered twice, from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 7 to 9 p.m., at The Rink in the Student Ministries and Care Center at Northland at Longwood. “The Scripture about jars of clay [2 Corinthians 4:7], the containers that women brought to the well to be filled and to share the resource of water with others, is a perfect picture of us who contain the treasure we receive from God to be shared by others,” Margi explained. “It is in the interior landscape of the heart that God places treasures for others to find.”

Dr. Margi McCombs

Born and raised in Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa, as the child of missionary parents, Margi came to America at age 16. Growing up in a home where biblical studies were encouraged and being exposed to global ministry from a young age helped equip her for her future work in ministry and education. Margi holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education, a master’s degree in Christian counseling and a doctorate in education. She is the founder of the International Community School, a local Christian school focused on providing students with a global worldview. Margi and her husband, Jim, have been married since 1980 and have five children: four grown sons and one teen daughter, as well as one daughter-in-law. Central to Margi’s message is the understanding that “matters of the heart, which matter to God, are a gift to those around you. Life can deal with us harshly, but in God’s hands, what’s left behind turns into pure gold. What do you have to give away?” Bringing women together on a heart-level is key to the vision for Conversations. By creating an environment where women can come together and talk — whether they are meeting each other for the first time or reconnecting with old friends — the planning team hopes that women will leave encouraged and emboldened to take that next step in their spiritual journey. For some, that might mean plugging into a particular ministry opportunity; for others, it might be as simple as getting together for a coffee date and investing time in a friendship. This is the first time that Conversations will be offered in the morning as well as the evening in an effort to make this opportunity available to more women. Child care is available at both gatherings. While there is no fee for child care, women should register their children online in advance for

Children of the Lord BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. – Mark 10:13-16 (NIV)

touched by God? One way is through the Mount Dora Children’s Ministries. Each week, loving volunteers share the Word, the love and the fun of Jesus with 60-plus children who come through our ministries. Whether praying or playing, reading or crafting, these little ones are learning to place their faith in Christ. A huge thank you goes out to all of the adults and teens who have faithfully served in the Mount Dora Children’s Ministries: Melanie, Page, Gene, Rose, Molly, Jason, Linda, Robin, Meghan, Maddie, Thom, Sharlee, Jason, Frances, Alisia, Kristi, Tiffany, Scott, Jeremy, Charisse, Brad, Kelly, Michael, Silvana, Paula, Glenn, Ulrika, Frank, Cindy, Joy, Sommer and Christina. You seriously rock! You are the answer to Jesus’ invitation to “Let the little children come to me”! And now, God is bringing Northland at Mount Dora an extra blessing: interim Children’s coordinator Lori Gagnon! Lori is on “assignment” from the Lord for the next three months to build up our Children’s Ministries and prepare us for the summer and beyond. Lori brings a wealth of experience in children’s ministry, including four years of staff work at

planning purposes. The $5 cost of an adult ticket will be used to offset program costs. The team is energized by the upcoming gathering, though it has been a long time coming. “The last Conversations was in May 2009, and with all that has happened to our team since then, including the birth of three babies, we realized we needed to take some time off before planning the next event,” one member said. Key to the success of the event is the role of volunteers. “We are so grateful to all of the volunteers who help make this gathering possible,” said Kristen Alderman. “Last time we had women helping with – Dr. Margi McCombs everything from setting out centerpieces to bringing a dessert to serving as a table host, making everyone feel welcome. We realize that this is definitely a team effort, which really reflects the heart of Northland … working together to serve God by serving someone else.” “God has blessed our congregation with women who are willing to step up to the plate and lead other women,” Kristen added. “It amazes me to see all the opportunities we have, as women, to connect with one another.” Another team member added: “Conversations is something that will probably be constantly evolving over time. This really is more of a movement than a ministry, and movements don’t necessarily follow a set course. Our desire is to connect women to the great ministries and people that are already here at Northland, year round. If we can be a catalyst to help point women in those directions, praise God.” To purchase tickets for the Conversations gathering, visit www.northlandchurch.net or stop by the Northland Bookstore. reading to you and to myself. That is my ongoing prayer, that we will all remember and remind each other how much we need a Savior, and then in response to that Savior — what He has done and what He has called us to do — that we will all live very different lives, together! This week’s focus in James 1:2-4 on perseverance is great and makes me think of one of my favorite passages, which starts in Romans 4:25 and ends in Romans 5:8 (NIV):

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Therefore, since am encouraged by the words so many have we have been justified through faith, we have peace shared with me these past few weeks in response with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through to the sermon I preached (well, maybe better whom we have gained access by faith into this grace said, read) to all of you. But God demonstrates his you don’t, but that standard is not even the real own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, standard. The real standard is even higher than Christ died for us. that, not adultery, but lust; not murder, but hate. I always have fun and always come away learning something new about Christ.” – Kim (senior)

“It’s just a place where I can go and be around others who I know have the same spiritual beliefs I do. There’s no cruelty or judgment there. We are all just there for one thing … to worship God.” – Rachel (freshman) “My experience at One Thing is something I have never experienced before, and look forward to every week. At One Thing, I get to interact with people that I would usually not associate with at school or on my personal time. I get to open up to people my age who go through the same situations that I go through. Everyone at One Thing gets along and can have conversations for days.” – Rafael (senior) “I love going to One Thing on Mondays; it’s a chance for me and friends to just relax and have a good time. I get to meet different people from different schools who are just like me, but in different ways, including our love for God!” – Alexandra (seventh grade) “One Thing is a place where I can learn about God with people who are like my family, and they are comfortable to be around. It is a great experience, and I learn about myself and God in a relationship.” – Nikki (freshman) Here are a few of the responses from leaders who were asked the same question:

hen we serve the God we do, sometimes He asks us to move to new places and at times when we do not expect. This has happened with one of our key staff members, Vanessa Puleo. Many of you have gotten to know Vanessa as you have worn the blue Serve Team T-shirts while you have served here in the local community. You have fixed houses, packed food packets and served with our local partners with her coordination and direction. We have grown as a church in our involvement in service in our local community through her leadership over the last two years. As you can see in her own writing, God has called her to move on to a new venture in ministry. Our commitment to seeing this congregation serve in ever-expanding ways will continue as strong as ever. We are in prayer that God will bring the right person at the right time to continue what has been started and see us keep growing in our ability to serve. We will continue to communicate about serving locally in all the same ways we have been through the paper and the website. As God leads us down the path of finding a new person to come into this role, we will keep you posted and engaged. We are on the path to have a record year of our congregation serving this community, and we don’t want to see that momentum slowed in any way. If you have an interest in taking on this role, contact HR@northlandchurch.net. Please pray for God’s direction and blessing for Vanessa and encourage her as you continue to see her here at Northland.

Answer: PERSEVERANCE

Being Complete James 1:2-4; Philippians 1:6 Everything that comes into our lives helps make us complete. Even our troubles bring good things into our lives. James explains it this way: “My brothers and sisters, you will face all kinds of trouble. When you do, think of it as pure joy. Your faith will be put to the test. You know that when that happens it will produce in you the strength to keep going without giving up. That kind of strength is called perseverance. It must be allowed to finish its work. Then you will be complete. You will have everything you need.” Paul was so sure of this that he said, “I am sure that the One who began a good work in you will carry it on until it is completed. That will be on the day Jesus returns.”

p Lenten Grou . . . Discussion Guide Gather with your family, a few friends or coworkers, or your current study group, and agree to go through the Lenten series together, using this discussion guide as a resource. It will be here for you each week. In addition, there will be a video clip each week as an additional tool to help you get into the topic. The video clip will be posted on Northland’s website — go to lent.northlandchurch.net.

Lesson 3

Do you believe that people are born inherently good or inherently bad? How do you think nonbelievers would answer this question? Illustration: If you are able, watch the provided video clip now. You can get it at www.northlandchurch.net. Click on the “2 Stories” tab at the bottom of the home page, and select the video clip for week 3. Class contribution: Each week ask one volunteer to commit to contribute something to the group for the following week’s discussion: a response, reflection or highlight of the Scripture or lesson from an outside source, some kind of nugget or interesting application he or she was able to find relating to the passages that were discussed. Right now, ask the volunteer from last week to present his or her response, reflection or contribution before you begin this week’s Bible reading. Then ask for a volunteer to commit to bring a personal contribution for next week. 2 Stories: Read together Genesis 4:1-16. Then read aloud the quote below: “Many details emphasize the depth of Cain’s crime, and therefore of the Fall: the context is worship, the victim a brother; and while Eve had been talked into her sin, Cain will not have even God talk him out of his; nor will he confess to it, nor yet accept his punishment.” (Derek Kidner, Genesis) The effects of sin can easily be seen in this story. Which verses indicate the sin in Cain’s heart? Why did Cain murder his brother? Hebrews 11:4 and 1 John 2:9-11 shed more light on this story. Why didn’t God accept Cain’s offering? What do you think of God’s punishment? Was it a stigma or a safe-conduct? What does Cain’s response tell you about him? What, specifically, did he leave, following his interaction with God? Read the song that Cain’s descendant, Lamech, sang for his wives in Genesis 4:23-24. How do you see the fast progression of immorality? Before you leave the story of Adam, read together Genesis 4:25-26. What spiritual change began with Seth’s family?

• How do you see the story of Christ being woven through your life? • What did you learn about God this week? • What did you learn about you this week? • What did you learn about us/each other this week?

Personal Challenge: Our only hope is for a savior, one who changes us from the inside out. Where/how do you see your greatest need for a savior? How have you been able to perceive the hand of God at work in your daily life? How has He been transforming your heart and life?

Prayer:

G

od’s Word is the lifeline of faith. Most of us, as believers, desire to have God’s Word in our lives. Most of us even understand the necessity of having it feed our souls. But making that a reality in our lives in today’s busy world can be a challenge. You will be glad to know that taking God’s Word with you wherever you go has never been easier. Recently, an online and mobile version of the Bible called You Version has been added to Northland’s website. Go to “Get Equipped,” and you will see the tab. Create your own username and password, and this Bible program will not only design a reading program to fit your needs, but it also will track your progress for you, pulling up each day’s Scriptures when you log in. Or you can download an application to your iPhone, BlackBerry or other mobile device, so you can literally have His Word in your hand at all times! There is also an online community where you can engage with others who are reading the same passages. It is our hope that this will provide a means for you to take the next steps in your journey to spiritual maturity.

Merciful God, We confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. —Gathering Prayer of Confession, BCP

of the Christ Thursday, April 1, 7 p.m. Northland at Longwood Sanctuary

Wrap-up: Now read together 1 John 4:7-14. This passage describes the transformation that has to occur in our hearts. Compare this passage with the picture of mankind we get from Genesis 4.

Love GOD, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got! Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates. –Deuteronomy 6:5-9 (The Message, by Eugene Peterson)

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

“I AM...not myself” Healthy In Every Way (The Meaning of Shalom) Scripture focus:

James 1:2-4 (NASB)

Worship focus:

..................................................................................................................................................

....................................................................

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Christ today as the Prince of Peace. The One who is perfect and complete intercedes for my completeness, my Shalom. He will complete the good work He has begun in me (Philippians 1:6).

summary prayer: NOTES:

....................................................................

Loving God, we have gathered to meet you. We have come to listen to you, to seek you, to worship you. You are the beginning of all things, the life of all things; you knew us before we were born. In you we become; in you we live. Loving God, you are here and everywhere, around us and within us; you know our inmost thoughts. In you we hope; in you we live. You are the source of serenity, giving peace that is beyond our understanding. In you we are still; in you we live. Loving God, we live in you; we worship you. Loving God, you live in us; we worship you. Amen. (Worship Sourcebook, page 66, #16)
