Meeting Others Where They Are Spanish-language interpretation launches in Longwood and online.

n a dimly lit room on the second floor at Northland at Longwood, tucked away from the congregation worshiping in the sanctuary nearby, sits Claudia Villalba. Wearing headphones and staring intently into a monitor that alights her face, she watches as Pastor Vernon Rainwater opens today’s service. “Thank you for bringing the church into this room,” he says. “Gracias por traer la iglesia al interior de este sitio,” she says. Her welcome is heard both in Longwood, by worshipers wearing special listening devices, and around the world by those participating online. Northland officially began offering Spanish interpretation last weekend during the 9 and 11 a.m. services. According to Mike Fernandez, a longtime Northland minister who is leading the church’s interpretation efforts, this was in response to both a local need and a global opportunity. “Nearly every weekend, we had people coming to the Welcome Desk asking if we offered Spanish interpretation. Plus, there are up to a half billion people worldwide who speak this language,” he explains. “The potential to bring glory to God is just huge.” Connecting with the Spanish-speaking world is another way Northland is distributing itself, going out to others and meeting them where they are. “Christ demonstrated His love for us by taking on human form and meeting us where we are,” Fernandez adds. “We’re trying our best to follow the Savior’s example — taking His message to others in a form that they can best relate to, for love’s sake.”

For that reason, it was crucial that the interpretation be at the highest level of excellence so that it could be understood by the maximum number of people. Enter Claudia Villalba, a Columbian-born, federally certified interpreter who also happens to be a follower of Jesus Christ. “Good interpreters do more than relay words; they pick up on facial expressions, nuances that convey the intent of the speaker,” Fernandez says. “Claudia has gotten such high marks from Spanish-speaking Claudia people from different Villalba dialects, so the standard of excellence has been extended into this area.” According to Northland’s senior pastor, Dr. Joel C. Hunter, having a Spanish interpreter for worship literally opens up a whole new world for the church. “This is not just a small step for Northland, but a giant leap for how we do ministry,” he says. While encouraging reports are starting to come in from around the world, a woman in Longwood recently helped to bring home just how much this resource means to people. Fernandez concludes, “The week we started, a lady came up to us … Her face just lit up as she talked about hearing the truth about Jesus in her own language. Word of mouth is a big deal in the Latin culture, and word is spreading fast about our Spanish interpretation. You wouldn’t believe the excitement I’m seeing.”

“Thank you for bringing the church into this room,” Dice él.

recipe you love to share with others. Bring your whole family, and connect with your Christian family. Be led to the throne of God by the CREW352 youth worship band. Be spiritually fed by the teaching of the Word. The theme of this month’s Gathering is “An Intimate Gathering with Jesus.” The Lord shared one last intimate meal with His closest friends before His betrayal, arrest and crucifixion. Luke tells us, “When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer’” (Luke 22:14-15, NIV). It was a sweet time of intimate connection with His friends, His brothers, His sheep, a time that Jesus “eagerly desired.” Today the Spirit of Jesus yearns to connect with us in deep, intimate ways, too. God says to us, “Where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20, NIV). So for the 30, 50 or 80 of us that are together at Gathering 242, He will be with us!

hen I was a kid, there were several traditions I could count on. One was that we sat down together for dinner. Though my brother David and I typically shoveled our dinners down in about four minutes, we had to remain at the table for conversation and connection with our parents. To this day, with my own family, dinner just doesn’t feel like dinner unless the five of us sit down and stay together throughout the meal! Northlanders at Mount Dora are building a “family meal” tradition as well. We call it Gathering 242. On the third Wednesday of each month, the entire Mount Dora family comes together for food, fellowship, worship and the Word of God. We are upholding the tradition of the early church in Jerusalem: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42, NIV). Teaching, fellowship, food, prayer and worship … you will experience all this and more at the Mount Dora Gathering 242. Make your favorite dish, the The Chapmans enjoy some fellowship with Richie Kluesener at Gathering 242.

Joy from Suffering? JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

T

here is a men’s study that has been going on in the Northland at Oviedo community for three years called Men’s Fraternity. It has been a great adventure together, with bonfires, camping trips and, most importantly, incredible teaching and insight from Pastor Robert Lewis. One of the things he said early on that resonated with me on a very deep level was what he called the “Paradox Principle.” I have always thought the story of Scripture was so peculiar because as far as I could tell, no man would have written it this way. It is too upside down with too much failure, weakness and loss. I mean, our Savior, the One we call Lord, not only was nailed to a tree and died, but came through a bloodline that included an out-of-wedlock young girl, a murdering adulterer, a prostitute, an orphaned murderer, not to mention a whole bunch of deceit, betrayal and sin. If that is not a paradox, I don’t know what is. What I have come to understand is that this is exactly how God designs most circumstances in which He works. Why? Well, I won’t be presumptuous enough to pretend I know why God does anything, but one thing that I can say is that it is there, in those seemingly upside-down moments, that we see and feel the greatest need for Him and

THIS WEEK! Greeting Card Ministry are truly able to observe and experience His power, grace, mercy and love. If it wasn’t this way, I am afraid we would think too much of ourselves and not enough of God Himself. We need these paradoxes in life to keep our eyes, hearts and faith on Him and not on us. That’s what Pastor Joel is walking us through right now, the paradox of our faith. Peter says in our focus verse this week (1 Peter 4:12-13), as he did similarly last week, that it is to be of no surprise to us when we suffer, as if something strange were happening to us, but rather we are to rejoice when we participate in the sufferings of Christ. What does Peter mean when he says “of Christ”? Well, some have thought that means when we are suffering the way Christ did, which I am sure is true. Some have said it is when we go through suffering the way Christ did, which I am sure is true. But I also think it is when we are one with Christ, completely submitted and surrendered to Him as we suffer anything. That has the potential of making almost any experience a holy experience, as it draws us closer into Him! So even giving birth, an experience Christ never “suffered,” brings great joy as a mother endures it, as she surrenders and submits herself to Him as she goes through it, and then she is able to become overjoyed as His glory is revealed in her. Or the affliction endured by a cancer patient, another suffering Christ never bore, can be transformed into rejoicing as His glory is revealed through the patient. We too often look to avoid or eliminate suffering from our lives, but what if that is where the greatest joy can be found by a believer? I am not advocating seeking it; that is false. I am simply wanting to know the joy set before me that is glorifying to Him. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s not. It is, however, a paradox, as is our faith, my friends!

Matthew’s Hope Still Warming People – Inside and Out TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister

A

s many of you heard at the end of our worship service two weeks ago from Larry Black, Matthew’s Hope, formerly the Freeze Warning Ministry, has been much more active than anyone anticipated. Imagine being prepared for a few nights dropping below 40 degrees and ending up with nearly 30 nights of taking in those who have no warm place to stay! As of last week, here are some numbers that might be interesting to you … and these do not include the first eight days we opened the shelter because nobody kept track of what was given those nights: • During the month of February, Matthew’s Hope was open 12 nights! • We had 35 different guests visit us, staying 232 nights in all. • We served 491 meals, and countless snacks and beverages. • Twenty-one of our guests needed and received medical attention, and one now resides at Hospice, where he will receive good care and he will be comfortable through his journey. • We baptized four of our friends. • We took 10 of the guests to My Salon for haircuts.

• Not counting the guests who enjoyed more than one shower per day, 223 showers were taken. • We distributed 31 toiletry packs, 68 sets of underwear/ socks, 70 sets of shirts/jeans, 28 jackets/gloves and seven pairs of shoes. • We distributed seven bike light kits and two blankets for guests not staying overnight but needing warmth. • We helped one guest with bus fare to Gainesville for a job interview. • We bused 13 guests to the Project Homeless Connect event at Discovery Church, where many services were available. Two of these folks received a birth certificate, and another person received a new Social Security card. If you are willing to volunteer during this time or serve in some other way, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Karen Gowing (matthewshopeministries@yahoo.com) or leave a message at the Matthew’s Hope hotline (407-4612625). If you will assist us as an Overnight Overseer, contact Larry Black (lblack2666@aol.com). I want to thank all of you who have helped with this ministry. Many of you have given blankets, clothes, food, toiletries and shoes, and even stayed overnight to make sure the least of these are cared for and loved. You are doing incredible work as we are seeing “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10, KJV)! As this ministry grows, so will the needs, so if you want or need more information about this ministry, e-mail me or Larry Black, and we will help you however we can. Thank

you for being the church God has called you to be in our community. You are making a difference! As a reminder, please bring your favorite brunch dish to share next week as we will share a meal together after our worship service! Bring your friends too — this is a great way for them to see the church and meet others! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

It’s Not Too Late to Make Your Someday Today! BY pattI harshey Northland Distributed Journeys Administrator, Service

A

little more than a month ago, we invited you to our Passport to the Nations event, where all of the Distributed Journeys for 2010 were showcased. Nearly 600 of you expressed an interest in serving on a short-term mission at the event. Today, more than 200 of you have completed applications to join a team, 11 trips have full teams, and our first Distributed Journey team returns home this weekend from its weeklong mission! However, there is still a spot for you on one of our 2010 Distributed Journeys. If you haven’t yet made the decision to serve on a team this year, read what some of those who have made that decision have to say. “I have been thinking about taking a mission trip for several years, but have always come up with a reason not to. I feel very strongly that God has wanted me to do this for those years I resisted. I have no expectations but to witness for Jesus and let Him work through me as He sees fit.” — Suzan C.

“I have not been on any Distributed Journeys. I have always wanted to but never stepped up. My someday is now. Everyone says these trips change your life.” — Miss E. “I want to extend my service to the Lord by faithfully following His call for me and my family to go on this trip.” — John W. “I know that my needs have always been taken care of, and I feel that it is time to go beyond myself and help others. God has given me so much, and I have so much to be thankful for.” — Ruth L. “I feel God’s calling me to go on this trip, and although I was a little hesitant at first, I’ve come to trust God and get serious about serving others.” — Jennifer C. Join your brothers and sisters in Christ, and make your someday today. We will help you overcome any potential obstacle you feel is standing in your way. It’s your time. It’s your someday … today. Visit www.somedayistoday.net for a complete listing of all the journeys planned for 2010 (new trips have been added to Haiti, Sri Lanka, Cuba and Ukraine), or contact Patti Harshey (patti.harshey@northlandchurch.net) for more information.

Answer: SUFFERING

Are You Suffering? 1 Peter 4:12-14 Sometimes Peter suffered as a follower of Jesus. Suffering is pain. When Jesus was arrested, Peter denied he knew Jesus. Peter was ashamed of himself. When Jesus forgave Peter, it must have helped Peter teach others about God’s forgiveness. Peter saw how God used his suffering to bring people closer to Him. We can expect to suffer hard times. Trust that God will use those hard times to help us bring others closer to Jesus. Peter wrote, “Dear friends, don’t be surprised by the painful suffering you are going through. Don’t feel as if something strange were happening to you. Be joyful that you are taking part in Christ’s sufferings. Then you will be filled with joy when Christ returns in glory.”

p Lenten Grou . . . Discussion Guide Gather with your family, a few friends or coworkers, or your current study group, and agree to go through the Lenten series together, using this discussion guide as a resource. It will be here for you each week. In addition, there will be a video clip each week as an additional tool to help you get into the topic. The video clip will be posted on Northland’s website — go to lent.northlandchurch.net.

Lesson 4

Best used by: March 15-21

Opener: Play a round of the game “It Could Be Worse.” Use the situations listed for you here, or have each group member make up his or her own. Then ask the other group members to think of ways “it could be worse.” Situation 1: You just wrecked your brand new car. Situation 2: You just found out that your job is not being funded next year. Situation 3: Your boyfriend/girlfriend just broke up with you after confessing that he/she has been involved with someone else for quite some time. Illustration: If you are able, watch the provided video clip here. You can get it at www.northlandchurch.net. Click on “2 Stories” from the home page, and select the video clip for week 4. If you are unable to play the video, discuss with your group the answer to the question “Are people born inherently good or inherently bad?” Class contribution: Each week ask one volunteer to contribute something to begin the following week’s discussion: a response, reflection, or highlight of the Scripture or lesson from an outside source, some kind of nugget or interesting application the person was able to find relating to the passages that were discussed. Right now, ask the volunteer from last week to present his or her response, reflection or contribution before you begin this week’s Bible reading. 2 Stories: Throughout this study, we have seen the spiritual condition of mankind go from being good, as God said in Genesis 1, to bad, in the stories of the sin in the Garden of Eden and Cain killing his brother, Abel (Genesis 3, 4). Surely, it can’t get any worse! Read together Genesis 6:5-22. • Use your own words to describe mankind and the condition of the world. • Compare it with Genesis 4. Would you say things are getting better or worse? • How is Noah described in these verses? If you were able to watch this week’s video, answer the two questions below from the illustrations you saw there. If you were not able to watch the video, look up pages 9 and 81 of the 2 Stories Lenten reader (available at Northland’s website at the “2 Stories” link), and discuss the following: How would you sum up the effect of Adam’s life and his choices on himself and his descendants? Now read together Philippians 2:5-10. How did Christ, while coming in the most unimaginable way for the most unimaginable sacrifice, give us a pure perspective on how to live our lives, as well as the power to live them out?

Wrap-up: • What did you learn about God this week? • What did you learn about you this week? • What did you learn about us/each other this week?

Personal Challenge: Christ came to seek and to save the lost. How has He changed your life? What kind of impact do you want your life to have? What changes could you make today that would alter the trajectory of your life from being like Adam’s to being more like Christ’s? Has the reality of God shone through your life to others as truth that can be seen, heard, tasted, touched and smelled?

Prayer: Consider closing today using Psalm 86 as your prayer.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

“I AM … not myself” Hurts From Many Days (The Wounded Healer) Scripture focus:

1 Peter 4:12-13 (NASB)

Worship focus:

..................................................................................................................................................

....................................................................

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.

Worship Christ today as the wounded Healer, who intercedes for our healing. “He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our wellbeing fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

NOTES:

summary prayer: ....................................................................

Father of mercies and God of all comfort, You comfort us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are also in affliction with the care we receive from You. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in joy, also. If we are afflicted, it is for Your comfort and salvation, and if we are comforted, it is for Your comfort. Our hope in You is unshaken, for we know that in all things, You are with us. (2 Corinthians 1:3-7)

NEXT WEEKEND: Pastor Vernon Rainwater | Building Heaven-like “Families” | “I AM...not myself” | Holy in Christ’s Way (The Disciplines of Love) | 2 Peter 1:4-8
