VOLUME 11, ISSUE 12
Stooping very low, He engraves with care His Name, indelible, upon our dust, And, from the ashes of our self-despair,
Kindles a flame of hope and humble trust.
He seeks no second site on which to build, but on the old foundation, stone by stone, Cementing sad experience with grace, Fashions a stronger temple of His own.
(Patricia St. John — The Alchemist)

A challenge from Pastor Joel: “ Easter weekend, everyone tithe! Give God the first 10% of your weekly income and let’s see what He will do!” “ But you ask, ‘How are we to return to You?’ … Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” _ Malachi 3:7b;10

Moving Jesus and His Story on Down the Road By Becky Hunter
N
ext weekend, we will celebrate Palm Sunday. Nearly 2,000 years have passed since Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On that day, people “took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!’” (John 12:13, NIV). Everyone who lined those streets had a different reason for cheering and waving palms. Some were political activists; they’d heard Jesus had supernatural power, and they wanted Him to use it to free Israel from Roman rule. Others had loved ones who were sick or dying. They waved branches, hoping for physical healing. Some were onlookers merely looking for something to do, while others were genuine followers who wished Jesus would establish Himself as an earthly king. Jesus was the only One in the parade who knew why He was going to Jerusalem — to die to save the world. He had a mission, while everyone else had an agenda. Well now, those words from Pastor Bill Hybels certainly beg the question “Am I praising Jesus today for His mission, or am I cheering for Him to accomplish my personal agenda?” Hopefully it’s His mission I’m fully supporting, but all too often I realize, after the fact, that I was more interested in my own agenda. Palm Sunday’s sidebar story, the one that sets up the triumphal entry of Jesus, highlights a perfect example of the impact that one person’s willingness
“
to prioritize Jesus’ mission over personal agenda can have. In Mark 11, we read that as Jesus and the disciples “approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and Pastor Joel and Becky in Jerusalem. bring it here. If anyone asks you, “Why are you doing this?” tell him, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.”’ Max Lucado reminds us that each of us has got a donkey “They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a that the Lord needs. Here is his reflection, from his book And doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, the Angels Were Silent, on using our donkey for the service ‘What are you doing, untying that colt?’ They answered as Jesus of the Lord: had told them to, and the people let them go” (vv. 1-6, NIV). Isaiah 62:11 and Sometimes I get the impression that God wants Zechariah 9:9 prophesy that me to give him something and sometimes I don’t give the King will come riding on it because I don’t know for sure, and then I feel bad a donkey. ho led you to the Lord? In 1994, a friend named Chuck invited me to church. I had zero interest in attending his church but a lot of interest in becoming his friend. You see, he really reached out to build a relationship with me. And as I got to know him, my trust level in him grew. And so did my willingness to talk about spiritual things. And one day I was ready. He invited me, and I quickly accepted. Chuck followed a simple, yet profound, principle, and I owe my salvation (at least, in human terms) to him: “Make a friend. Be a friend. Bring a friend to Christ.” I know that you have a burden for the unsaved and unchurched in your life. Have you been a friend to them? Is the trust level growing? Some of them may be ready like I was. Perhaps it’s time to invite them to your church. In two weeks we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Why not invite your friends to Easter service or to the Mount Dora showing of The Passion of the Christ? Most people who are far from God are open and
Invite a Friend …
even expect to be invited to church on Easter. If you’ve been a friend to them, this could be your next step. It’s easy and nonthreatening. It’s no different from describing your favorite movie or sharing about a wonderful doctor that you go to. Here is some math for you: On a given Sunday in Mount Dora, we have a total of about 200 people worshiping in our sanctuary. The room is equipped to hold 275 people per service. This means that we could hold 550 worshipers for our two Sunday morning services on Easter. If every Northlander brings one or two friends, we would fill the place up. Just think what the Holy Spirit might do in their hearts, if only they heard the message! Paul speaks of our opportunity: “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And –Romans 10:15 (NIV) how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’” (Romans 10:14-15, NIV). I invite you to invite others to church at Easter time – either to The Passion of the Christ on Wednesday, March 31, or to Easter service in Mount Dora on Sunday, April 4. One more thought: When Chuck invited me to church, he called me on Saturday night to remind me and see if I was going. He went to great lengths to help me know Christ. What can you do to help someone know your Lord?

Peter goes through a litany of qualities we are to possess, “make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love” (NIV). Peter then goes on to state why this is so important: here are some phrases throughout Scripture “If you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they that command our special attention, a closer will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in ear, a more thoughtful consideration when we your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” That is exactly come across them. I have written about my favorite what I want, so what do I do now? Glad you asked for of these, “so that.” Whenever I see the words some clarification, says Peter; let me clarify and simplify “so that” in a sentence, I know the point a bit. Peter goes on in I need to really pay attention to verses 10 and 11: “If you do these “ … if you do these things, what is being conveyed. There things, you will never fall, and is this powerful proclamation you will receive a rich welcome you will never fall, and being made about what has into the eternal kingdom of our you will receive a rich just been said. A double welcome into the eternal series of commands, “You shall” dose of “you will” demands kingdom of our Lord and do this and this and this, we are some extra attention. “You will told why, “… so that your days never fall, and you will receive Savior Jesus Christ.” and the days of your sons may a rich welcome into the eternal –2 Peter 1:10-11 (NIV) be multiplied on the land which kingdom of our Lord and Savior the LORD swore to your fathers Jesus Christ.” to give them, as long as the heavens remain above This is not works salvation! That “so that” starts the letter: “To those who through the righteousness phrase should cause our ears to tingle and our of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as concentration to become very focused. precious as ours .... westoaksnews It’s Family Time TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
M
any of you have told me how much you appreciate Pastor Joel’s family time before he starts his sermon. I believe it is because you get to hear what is happening with the family. Today, after our worship service, we will be sharing a meal together and also having some family time to talk about our West Oaks family. So please join us right after the service for great food, incredible fellowship and to hear what is happening with the community you gather with every Sunday. I also thought this would be a great time for you to get a little glimpse of Jodi and Hugues Severe’s trip to Haiti. Below is just one story of many that Jodi wrote about in their blog, which you can find at www.graindespoirhaiti.com. On Saturday night, all but one bag of rice had been distributed, and someone was coming to pick that up on Sunday morning. We finally had a few hours to relax and enjoy the mountain breeze before we left the following morning. Hugues and I (and several kids) had taken a walk to give a Bible to an older man who lived a little ways down the road. To preface, Oxel is a good friend of Hugues and helped us so much this week. He has two teenage children, and his home is the gathering place to play dominoes. He also has four young adults living with him who have been displaced
from Port-au-Prince. When we presented him with the Bible, he shook his head and said (in Kreyol), “Both of my children can read and write, but I can’t. What an amazing gift for me!” When we returned from our walk, four young men were sitting on the gallery, talking, and the Bible we had left playing when we went for our walk was still playing. As we walked up, we were talking about who else would like a Bible, and Hugues commented that the young kids who were at the gallery then wouldn’t care. When we got to the house, one of the young men came to Hugues and asked if he could have the Bible. With tears in his eyes, he told us that before the earthquake, he didn’t believe in God or care about Him. He was in Port-au-Prince during the earthquake and afterward realized he wanted to follow Christ and devote his life to Him. He didn’t have a Bible and had never really been exposed to the Word. He was ecstatic as he ran down the mountain with his Bible in hand. Read more at www.graindespoirhaiti.com. All of us have stories to tell and things we are doing that are making a difference in our families, in our neighborhoods, in our communities, in our country and even around the world. My challenge to you is to let others know so we can be praying for you and supporting you in doing what God has called you to do. We want to see and experience the Kingdom of God here on earth as it is in heaven, and we will when we are doing what God has called us, and prepared us, to do. Keep being the church every day and everywhere you go, and remember, you are blessed to be a blessing! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Lesson 5
Best used by: March 22-28
Opener: What do you believe about the existence of sin and evil? Set a timer or use a second hand on the clock. In one minute, name all the places and ways that you see evidence of evil in our world. Illustration: If you are able, watch the provided video clip here. You can get it at www.northlandchurch.net. Click on “2 Stories” from the home page, and select the video clip for week 5. If you are unable to play the video, discuss with your group the answer to the question “What do you believe about the existence of sin and evil?” Class contribution: Each week ask one volunteer to contribute something to begin the following week’s discussion: a response, reflection, or highlight of the Scripture or lesson from an outside source, some kind of nugget or interesting application the person was able to find relating to the passages that were discussed. Right now, ask the volunteer from last week to present his or her response, reflection or contribution before you begin this week’s Bible reading. 2 Stories: Over the last few weeks, we have followed the stories that tell of the escalation of evil in the world following the sin of Adam and Eve. Consider reading together Genesis 7, or read the story of the flood from a children’s Bible storybook. Then discuss the following: • If you were Noah, what would you have thought when God told you to build the ark? • What do you think was the hardest part of the project for Noah? • What do you find most interesting, or amazing, about this story? • Do you see the flood as God’s destruction, or God’s salvation? Next read together Romans 5:6-8 and 12-19. In your own words, describe how these verses explain the plan of salvation. March 25 is a special day on the church’s liturgical calendar. It is the Annunciation, the date that the angel is believed to have visited Mary. What special connection do you see for this holy day and this week’s lesson?
Wrap-up: Discuss • What did you learn about God this week? • What did you learn about you this week? • What did you learn about us/each other this week?
Personal Challenge: This week think about how you see God’s timing in your own salvation and spiritual journey. How has He rescued you? How has He intervened in your personal history? Where do you need to trust His timing and salvation today?
Prayer: We pray to God to know His passion, death and resurrection — which come from the goodness of God. We pray to God for the strength that comes from His cross — which also comes from the goodness of God. We pray to God … for His is the goodness of everything. Amen. – Julian of Norwich, Revelations of Divine Love

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Vernon Rainwater, Pastor
“Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms. We have a reason for being together. It is to worship God for who He is and what He has done.” — Pastor Vernon Pastor Vernon Rainwater leads Northland in worship when we gather together for church “in these rooms.” A native of Wilmore, Kentucky, Vernon has been a part of the worship leadership at Northland for 20 years. While distributed ministry and worship are the two primary areas of his focus, his desire is to motivate each generation to live a life of worship everywhere, every day. Vernon has been a musician since he was 17, but he has worked in social work, law enforcement and served in the military as well. With a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Kentucky, he also holds graduate degrees from the University of Kentucky in social work and from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in biblical studies. Vernon and his wife, Connie, have two daughters: Claire and Mandy. Mandy and her husband, Chad Turnbull, live in Casselberry, Florida, and have blessed the Rainwaters with three grandchildren. Claire and her husband, Aaron Reed, live in New York City, where Claire attends Columbia University. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT PASTOR VERNON, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
“I AM … not myself” Holy in Christ’s Way (The Disciplines of Love) Scripture focus:
2 Peter 1:4-8 (ESV)
..................................................................................................................................................
… by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. NOTES:
Worship focus: ....................................................................
Worship Christ today, the Author of all wisdom. He sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for our understanding and spiritual growth.
summary prayer: ....................................................................
GOD our Father, Help us to remember that You are the Potter and we are the clay. In Your wisdom, You are continually shaping us — molding our hearts, making us into the individuals You created us to be. Teach us to be faithful. Continue to shape our souls as we follow, lead and serve. Amen.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Building Heaven-like “Families” | “I AM … not myself” | I Am Not My Own (Palm Sunday) | Luke 19:37-40; 22:41-42
