A challenge from Pastor Joel: “ Easter weekend, everyone tithe! Give God the first 10% of your weekly income, and let’s see what He will do!” “ But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ … Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” _ Malachi 3:7b, 10 (NIV)

What Are Passover and Seder? By Dr. dan lacich Pastor

“Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’ ” — Exodus 12:24-27 (NIV)

T

he people of Israel had been enslaved by the Pharaohs of Egypt for generations. When it came time that God was going to deliver the Israelites from their slavery, He gave them instructions for the final meal they would eat in Egypt. They were to take a lamb or a goat from their flocks. It was to be one without any blemish or defect. They were to slaughter this unblemished sacrifice and roast it for their meal. But before they had the meal, they were instructed to dip a branch into the blood of the lamb and spread the blood on the wooden beam and doorposts of their house. This blood of the sacrificed lamb would be a sign to the angel of death. As the angel passed through the land of Egypt, every house that was covered by the symbol of the blood of the lamb would be spared. The angel of death would “pass over” that house, and all within it would live. God gave instructions to Moses that he passed on to the people. Every year they were to remember

this event by celebrating this meal. They were instructed to pass on the truth of God’s deliverance to their children. Over the years, the celebration has grown so that now Passover is the name for the entire religious celebration, and Seder is the name given to the meal. Each item in the meal has a symbolic significance related to the event of that first Passover. Unleavened bread was eaten to remind the people of how quickly they had to leave Egypt because the bread had no time to rise. Two types of bitter herbs are eaten in order to symbolize the harshness and bitterness of captivity in Egypt. Charoset is a sweet, brown, grainy food that symbolizes the material used by the slaves to construct buildings in Egypt. A vegetable was eaten after being dipped in saltwater, which represented the tears shed during years of slavery. A roasted shank bone of the lamb represented the sacrificial lamb. Finally, an egg representing the sacrifices made throughout the Passover was eaten. Along the way, Christians have recognized that the sacrificial lamb of the Passover was a clear foreshadowing of Jesus. Just as the blood of the lamb was spread on the wooden posts of the houses of the Israelites, the blood of Jesus ran down the wooden post of the cross. In each case, the blood of the unblemished lamb defeated death for all who came under its covering. Just as the people of Israel found freedom from slavery because of that blood, so believers in Jesus Christ find freedom from sin because of faith in His blood. But a closer look at the rest of the Seder meal will reveal another way of looking at the symbols that point us to Jesus. As a result, many Christians now celebrate a Seder meal on Holy Thursday, or the night before Good Friday. The bitter herbs become a reminder of the bitterness and hardship that sin brings into our lives. The saltwater in which a vegetable is dipped still represents tears. But instead of tears of suffering, they become tears of repentance as we turn back to God through Jesus Christ. The shank bone stands for the unbroken bones of Jesus the Lamb as He was sacrificed on the cross. The egg becomes a symbol of life that is found in Christ.

The most important symbols for the Christian are the unleavened bread and the wine that are central to the Seder. It was during a Seder, or Passover meal, that Jesus gathered with His closest followers on the night before He was crucified. Jesus took the bread that had been a reminder of the haste in leaving Egypt, and He completely changed its meaning. Now it was to be a reminder of His body, which was about to be broken for us. Just as bread gives life to those who eat it, the body of Christ gives life to all who get their nourishment from Him. The cup of wine that reminded people of the blood of the lamb and the Nile turned to blood as a plague now becomes a symbol of cleansing and participation. The cup of Christ now becomes the symbol of a new covenant between God and us. It is a covenant sealed in the blood of Jesus. It promises that all who eat of that bread and drink of that cup will by faith be rescued from sin to everlasting life.

When It’s Easy and When It’s Not JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

M

any of you know the story from Scripture. Whether you do or don’t, let’s be sure to remember it as it was told in all four Gospels. Read each account (repetition helps it sink in): Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44 and John 12:12-19. It tells the story of the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem. The crowds were cheering and celebrating His arrival, singing joyful praises to God in heaven: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” These ancient words of exultation from Psalm 118:26 were from a psalm of thanksgiving for the Lord’s saving goodness, but I am not sure the people even knew how true that really was, that Christ was there as their Savior, that He was the Messiah they had been waiting for all these years. I mean, I think they knew what they heard and saw; Jesus had been roaming the countryside doing miraculous things, healing the lame, the blind, even the demon-possessed. He had been doing the work of the Messiah, fulfilling prophecy after prophecy, even riding into Jerusalem on a foal (Zechariah 9:9). Yet, I am not sure they really got it. Why do I say that? Well, in Luke 19:41-42, right after He defends the praises of the people to the Pharisees who asked that they be stopped, Jesus weeps over the city and says this: “‘If you

had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes’” (NASB). He knows they don’t really get it; He knows that right now it is easy for them to celebrate His entry into the city, for them to praise His arrival, for them to call Him King. It has cost them nothing when it’s easy! But what happens when that changes? This is one of the great ironies of Scripture. In a very short period of time, the crowds move from cheering and praises toward their King to jeering and scoffing at a criminal. This happened to even the closest of His disciples, Peter, who denied relationship with Christ three times. So the question I want us to ask is this: How often do I do that? Do I ever praise God when it’s going great, my prayers are being answered the way I want them to be, He’s doing miraculous things in my life and all around me, and I am confident He is my King and Savior, only to quickly turn the corner and begin jeering and scoffing Christ when the persecution comes, when He seems to be far off or not really in control? You wouldn’t jeer or scoff Christ, right? What if jeering and scoffing looked a bit different? What if they looked more like unbelief or idol worship? What if we were mocking Him every time we made someone or something else king in our lives, such as money, our career, people, popularity, stuff or even ourselves? What if we were scoffing Him every time we were choosing to believe the lies of the world and not Him--I am not a child of the King; I am not safe and secure in Christ; I am not free; I am not holy? Will I live my life celebrating and praising Him as King regardless of the circumstances, when it’s easy and when it’s not?

“ Will I live my life celebrating and praising Him as King regardless of the circumstances, when it’s easy and when it’s not?”

s the crowds gathered together to celebrate Jesus’ coming to Jerusalem, they did what you and I would do: They spread their cloaks on the road as Jesus rode by on His colt. There was truly so much excitement in the air because Jesus was coming to town, and all the disciples, followers of Christ, began to say together in loud voices: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” I often wonder how excited or thrilled we, those who follow Christ today, would be if this took place now. Would we do whatever it would take to honor Christ and humbly bow our knees? When we celebrate Jesus in these ways, it really does begin to feel like we are His disciples, and last weekend as we ate a meal together after our service, we did celebrate Jesus in many ways. As I looked around the room and saw the many different conversations and even new relationships being formed, I couldn’t help but think we are being who Christ has called us to be, and that is worth celebrating together! When I was a kid, growing up in a large family, Sunday dinners with the family all together were always special times for me. Sunday at dinnertime was when we all were able to talk about what was going on in our lives, and we were all interested in the others sitting around the table. I also remember, when there was something important to talk

about, this was the time to do that. And last weekend at our brunch, we were able to share some important things with you, our family, about our church community. From where we have been to where we are going in the future, we were all able to share, and you were able to ask questions about our next few months. I hope you are as excited as I am about what God is doing in and through us for our community. But more than anything, we celebrated being together, and we celebrated Jesus’ being our Lord and Savior. Thank you for being the church that loves Jesus and loves the people Jesus has put around you. As we move forward and we pursue all Jesus wants for us, my prayer for us is this: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2, NIV). >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Egypt Distributed Journey Informational Meeting Sunday, April 11, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., rooms 4206-7, Longwood site

Join with teams from Northland partner church Kasr El Dobara to reach out to the forgotten in Cairo and the villages near El Minya (Upper Egypt) — the orphans, elderly, disabled, homeless and sick. You will cradle babies in your arms, hold the hand of a child suffering from cancer and show the lonely in nursing homes that someone cares about them. You also will visit the most vulnerable — the homeless in Garbage City (aptly named because the people literally live in a garbage dump) and the City of the Dead, where families live among the tombstones of a cemetery. You will pray for and with the people and distribute food, blankets and hygiene products. Taking a prayer walk through the ancient streets of Cairo and Upper Egypt will be the fitting conclusion to this mission of mercy. Details: Betsy Dasse (bsdasse@aol. com or 407-620-4284)

Answer: HOSANNA

PRAISING JESUS Luke 19:37-40 Jesus headed toward Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Crowds lined the streets to cheer for Him. They spread their cloaks and palm branches on the road to make a special path for Jesus and the donkey. The whole crowd of disciples began to praise God with joy. In loud voices they praised Him for all the miracles they had seen. They shouted, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! May there be peace and glory in the highest heaven! Hosanna!” Hosanna means “save!” But the people called Pharisees did not like it when the crowd praised Jesus. Instead they said to Him, “Teacher, tell your disciples to stop!” Jesus replied, “I tell you, if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” No one can stop His praises!

Worship and Serve Together

p Lenten Grou . . . Discussion Guide H Gather with your family, a few friends or coworkers, or your current study group, and agree to go through the Lenten series together, using this discussion guide as a resource. It will be here for you each week. In addition, there will be a video clip each week as an additional tool to help you get into the topic. The video clip will be posted on Northland’s website — go to lent.northlandchurch.net.

Lesson 6

Best used by: March 30-April 3

Opener: What is your favorite makeover show? (“The Biggest Loser,” “What Not to Wear,” “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”) What do you think makes these shows so popular? Illustration: If you are able, watch the provided video clip here. You can get it at www.northlandchurch.net. Click on “2 Stories” from the home page, and select the video clip for week 6. If you are unable to play the video, discuss with your group the answer to the question “Why do you think makeover shows are so popular?” Class contribution: Each week ask one volunteer to contribute something to begin the following week’s discussion: a response, reflection, or highlight of the Scripture or lesson from an outside source, some kind of nugget or interesting application the person was able to find relating to the passages that were discussed. Right now, ask the volunteer from last week to present his or her response, reflection or contribution before you begin this week’s Bible reading. 2 Stories: Read Genesis 8 together. Then discuss these questions: What do you think Noah and his family were thinking and feeling as they waited in the ark? What do you think they were thinking and feeling as they came out of the ark? How must God’s blessing and covenant promise have encouraged them? Compare their situation, and their new start, with the one we have because of Christ’s death and resurrection. Look at Hebrews 8:7-12. What four promises do you find in this new covenant? Who is the promisor, or guarantor, of this covenant? How does this new covenant encourage you?

Wrap-up: As this is your last Lenten discussion group, look back over the season together. • What did you learn about God this Lenten season? • What did you learn about you this Lenten season? • What did you learn about us/each other this Lenten season?

Personal Challenge: It is because of Christ’s transforming power in our lives that we have hope in this new covenant. It is because He is accomplishing, or already has accomplished, our salvation (2 Corinthians 3:14). He is changing us from day to day. If you have time, consider asking for volunteers to share where they see God’s transforming power at work in their lives.

Prayer: O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Source: www.churchyear.net.

ave you had a chance to participate in a Sunday evening service at Northland at Longwood lately? If so, you may have noticed a few changes. What was your initial response? Finally, a young-adult service? Finally, Joel loses the tie? Finally, a chance to form community? Many people are asking questions about the changes in format. Most obviously, Pete Geiger, Jeremiah and Jenny Shaw, and a mixture of musicians lead the worship for this service. But the unique worship leadership alone is not the point. Several months ago, the worship planning team began to discuss what it would be like if each worship service at Longwood would see itself as a distinct worship site with its own leadership. Sean Cooper was asked to consider becoming the on-site pastor. He began to look for 50 families that would commit to being a part of the leadership team that would serve this congregation —providing intentional ways for them to care for each other, serve the local community and reach out to the global Kingdom. Three weeks into this new venture, the service is gaining momentum. Each week after the worship service, participants are given some unique way to respond to worship. Sometimes they share a meal together. One night they packaged 23,000 meals for Kids Against Hunger. There are plans for extended prayer times, Bible study and other opportunities. But this service is only the beginning. The other evening services eventually will launch their own on-site leadership teams, offering their own opportunities to worship and serve together in community.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

“I AM … not myself” I Am Not My Own (Palm Sunday) Scripture focus:

Luke 19:37-40; 22:41-42 (NASB)

..................................................................................................................................................

Luke 19:37-40 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: “BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!” Luke 22:41-42 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Worship focus: ....................................................................

Worship Christ today for His everlasting love. He sits at the right hand of God, interceding for us. As His children, it is His love that shines through us, transforming our relationships.

summary prayer: ....................................................................

Almighty and everliving God, in Your tender love for the human race You sent Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon Him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of His humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of His suffering, and also share in His resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. BCP 219
