An Easter message from Dr. Joel C. Hunter
Now is the shining fabric of our day Torn open, flung apart, rent wide by love. Never again the tight, enclosing sky, The blue bowl or star-illumined tent. We are laid open to infinity For Easter love has burst his tomb and ours. Now nothing shelters us from God’s desire Not flesh, not sky, not stars, not even sin. Now glory waits so He can enter in. Now does the dance begin.
– Elizabeth Rooney, “Openings” (as collected in A Widening Light: Poems of the Incarnation, edited by Luci Shaw, Harold Shaw Publishers, 1984)

Building the Church, Bit by Bit BY nathan clark Online Minister, Director of Digital Innovation, Media Design
L
ast month, you helped launch online church in three different major languages: Russian, Ukrainian and Afrikaans. Northland recently sent two teams bearing technology: one to New Life in Kiev, Ukraine; and another to Vredelust in Cape Town, South Africa. Each team delivered hardware that Northland uses for online worship to our church partners so they could begin offering their services online to seekers and worshipers around the world. Both churches proceeded to launch online worship services at the end of March. The results? Vredelust offered its service online in Afrikaans, a common language in South Africa spoken by 16 million people worldwide. Pastor Joel was in the country for the first service and preached the message on Sunday morning (with a translator, of course). About 100 people joined in from all around the world to worship with our Cape Town partner on its website. New Life started its online services last weekend as well. New Life offers services in both Ukrainian and Russian. Ukrainian is spoken by 47 million people worldwide and was an “underground” language for much of the time that Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. Many Ukrainians also speak Russian, so the church has offered services in both languages for some time. New Life also is holding its Russian service online, which is exciting because 160 million people in the world speak Russian.
Vredelust and New Life join Kasr El Dobara, our partner in Cairo, Egypt, in offering live worship online. Kasr El Dobara started offering online worship at the end of 2009 to 530 million people in the Arabic-speaking world. As best as we can tell, all three churches are the first to offer online church in their respective languages, meaning that 868 million people can now worship online from anywhere in the world, in their heart language. Our thanks and congratulations go out to Vredelust, New Life and Kasr El Dobara for reaching this significant milestone and caring for their communities in this profound way. Thanks to everyone in the Northland congregation, too, because your passion for God expressed in partnership and technology continues to bring hope and change all over the world. Worldwide 915 million people speak English. With these new worship environments, the number of people who could be affected by Northland for the Gospel has almost doubled to 1.7 trillion people through the great work of our partners.

Worship 2.0 By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations
Y
ou may have heard that Northland recently planted a new church in the “nation” of Facebook, bringing live worship to its 400 millionplus residents. Now, the church is putting worship within reach of millions of BlackBerry subscribers. The new Facebook app allows worshipers to invite their Facebook friends to go to church with them— without leaving the familiar Facebook environment. Plus, even when live worship isn’t happening, the opportunity for worship is readily available because the previous week’s service will be posted and available for viewing 24 hours a day. To try the new app, visit apps.facebook. com/northlandchurch. The church has also started beta testing live worship via BlackBerry. Anytime a live service is happening, simply point your BlackBerry smartphone to: www. northlandchurch.net/bbstream. It works exclusively on devices that support the H.264 codec. To see if your device is compatible, visit: http://bit.ly/northlandbbstream. Ultimately, Northland hopes these online worshipers will join a community with other believers ... or start one. To that end, the church is providing tools for online worshipers to start “simple churches” in their homes at www.doingchurchsimply.com. “We encourage people to be the church everywhere, every day, so it just makes sense to put resources out there that will help people to be that church,” explains Nathan Clark, Northland’s director of digital innovation.

He Has Risen! Happy Easter! JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e are so glad you have joined us at Northland at Oviedo this glorious Easter Sunday. We are so blessed to be able to proclaim these great words that are the source of all our hope: “He has risen!” These words were first spoken by the two men whose clothing gleamed like lightning to the women who came to the tomb to tend to Christ’s body (Luke 24:4-7, NIV): “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!” Everything changed forever in the course of history from this point forward. All of creation felt the reverberations of the Resurrection as the Kingdom of God was ushered in a new way that had been prophesied since the fall in the Garden (Genesis 3:15). The new kingdom, the new heavens and the new earth had begun to arrive in its first and primary installment, the establishment of its King, Jesus Christ, the Defeater of death! Easter is a momentous celebration for the body of Christ, and we are so glad you are here with us for it. We gather each week to worship God for who He is and what He has done, and then we seek to live out a response to that call everywhere, every day. The Northland at Oviedo staff, leadership and family desire to see us all pursue Christ individually and corporately, and we know from the example given to us by the early church that this is best done in the context of community life. That is the why behind all that we do and are a part of here – to follow hard after Christ together, to live

sent together, to be transformers of our community together, starting right in our own hearts and homes and out to the ends of the earth. We have multiple ways for you to get connected and involved in this lifelong journey called Christianity: • Sunday worship experience: 9 and 11 a.m. • Midweek special worship and prayer gatherings. • Fellowship/social events: Neighborhood Gatherings, movie nights, picnics, barbecues, Crazy Cards and more. • Sports ministry: Basketball, softball and flag football. • Service opportunities in our community and beyond: Hope Foundation Food Pantry, Boys Town events, Helping Hands projects, outreach events, mission trips, cards ministry and more. • Sunday service teams: Greeters/ushers, refreshments, setup/takedown team, Children’s Ministries, Student Ministries, Communion and prayer team. • Bible studies, small groups and classes for all ages, life stages and locations. • Leadership development for group leaders and people wanting to help shepherd the flock. If you are here for the first time, or you have been coming for a while, please don’t just come and watch the service and then go home. Christ has so much more in store for you. There are some amazing people here who will attest to the power of community and would love to see you “be a part of it” with us. Christianity is seven days a week, 24 hours a day. It is not an event; it is a lifestyle, and despite what you may think, it is a team sport, a community of people who are seeking to know Christ and make Him known, together! If you are not experiencing that now, today is the day to change that, because He has risen! Be sure to sign up for our e-mails, join our Facebook page, check our blog or read the newspaper to stay informed … or, my favorite, have a cup of coffee with me! Life in Community – It’s What Jesus Did! TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
W
hat do you think about when you think about Easter? Is it Jesus, the Resurrection, new life, hope? How about community? When Jesus rose on that first Easter, one of the first things He did was go back to His community of friends. So today, Easter 2010, I want you to spend time with your community, whether it’s family, friends or neighbors, and enjoy one another. This is what the community is about, loving one another and enjoying one another as Christ did, and would do even today. What is it about your community that you are excited about today? What can you do to bring new life into that community? As you experience Christ and the reality of His presence in your life, bring that reality into your relationships. I think this is what people want to see and not just hear about on a Sunday morning. In community is where we can be Jesus with skin on. In community is where we can live out the hope we have because of what Easter means for those of us who believe in the Resurrection! Because our community is so important to us at West Oaks, we are looking at different ways of expanding that community. So next weekend, April 11, Jason Dukes from West Point Church will join us here at West Oaks to share what that congregation is doing in the community as a part
of the Church of West Orange and also to share with us what their community of believers is doing to be the church in this area. I will go and share with their congregation what we are doing and who we are as a community. Our hope is to be the church in this community that will make a difference in, and for, the Kingdom of God. So I want to encourage you all to be here next weekend and see and hear what God is doing in this area of west Orange County. As Jesus met with this community on the first night after His Resurrection, He wanted them to know His plan for them. He said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21, NIV). When you hear these words, my hope is that they challenge you to figure out what they mean to you. What does it mean to you that Jesus is sending you? What is He sending you out to do? Where is He sending you? Many of us do not know the answer to any of these questions, so my challenge to you is to figure it out! It may mean you have some conversations with others who are trying to answer the same questions. Maybe it means you talk to someone who is already working on what it means for him or her. My hope is that you will not just read these words and believe they are for everyone else. Take what Jesus said, and begin working it out in your own life. You will not be disappointed when you experience all that God has for you using the gifts He has given you. I love being the church with you, and I am excited to see how God is challenging each of us to hear Him daily. Keep your eyes focused on that calling in your life! Happy Easter! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Caring for the Haitian People Together BY MICHAEL VAN HUIS Northland Executive Director Service
W
hen the earthquake struck Haiti recently, we knew that we needed to respond to this tragedy as quickly as possible. We knew that the key to meeting the needs that arose as a result of this tragedy was through partnerships that we had with organizations working in Haiti or serving as part of disaster response. IsleGO Missions, New Missions and Kids Against Hunger are local organizations that have connections in Haiti, and we immediately contacted them to see how we could serve together to care for the Haitian people. We also called our friends at ACTS/World Relief to see about partnering together to get trained disaster responders on the ground in Haiti quickly to help care for the people and support logistics of their operation. We also pulled our resources together as a congregation and to date have seen $140,000 come in to be directed to Haiti! Through these partnerships and with this money, we have been able to work in partnership with the organizations below.
IsleGO
For Haiti relief operations with our partners in this country, $31,428 was needed. IsleGO is helping to rebuild the nation, helping with medical clinics for those injured in the earthquake, providing temporary housing and relief supplies for the homeless, and setting up our base of operations in Jacmel for the long-term reconstruction of Haiti, especially for churches, orphanages and schools. Some of the funds will be used to construct the Widows and Orphans Project in Cap-Haitien. With the exodus of people, especially the homeless and orphans, to the northern part of Haiti from the major damage in the south, this project is needed. The orphanage will house 50 orphans and house parents; 20 “casitas,” or small homes, will be built for widows with children. This is in partnership with IsleGO’s contacts on the ground there, Open Door Haiti, and is in the same location they will be using as a distribution center for food and medical supplies to outlying churches.
Before earthquake. After earthquake.
Relief operations consist of a 7,000-watt generator for the operations base in Jacmel, $4,700; tents and tarps for temporary housing for the homeless, $1,800; an autoclave sterilizer for Beraca Medical Center in La Pointe, $2,500; anesthesia, spinal tap needles and a centrifuge for Berace Centre in La Pointe, $2,800; and building materials and labor, $20,000.
New Missions
New Missions, based in Haiti, is in full reconstruction and care mode for the local congregations and orphans to whom they minister. Northland has donated $30,000 to the reconstruction efforts of New Missions in Haiti. This money will help in the rebuilding of two churches. These pastors not only minister to their congregation on weekends, but are also teachers in the New Missions schools during the week. Visit www. newmissions.org to learn more about this fantastic agency and its road to help rebuild Haiti. Later this year, we are looking to send a construction team to Haiti with New Missions to help rebuild.
Kids Against Hunger
We have teamed up with Kids Against Hunger in the preparation of nearly 200,000 meals that have been sent directly to Haiti. These meals run about 25 cents apiece, and we have donated $52,000 so that these meals could be prepared and shipped to Haiti. With these meals goes a water purification system Hundreds volunteer to assemble meal packs for Haiti every month. that gives thousands of people clean water for life. This not only meets immediate needs, but creates a long-term positive impact on these people’s state of living. We are working on plans with Kids Against Hunger to see ongoing food packing days in the months ahead.
ACTS World Relief
Northland Disaster Response teams have been prepared to respond locally, nationally and internationally through several group trainings and hands-on field training exercises. ACTS (Active Community Teams Serving) World Relief provided the framework for guiding our ministry through the necessary training and the connectional support for deployments. After the earthquake in Haiti, ACTS called upon our teams to participate in the relief effort. Our first team of 17 members deployed only days after the earthquake and joined with other ACTS World Relief responders to form a team of 100 people. Medical professionals and Emotional & Spiritual team members joined forces in the Adventista Hospital in Diquini, Haiti. The medical teams worked long shifts performing numerous life-saving surgeries. The support teams provided emotional first aid to the patients and families, assisted in creating the pharmacy, operated sterilization equipment and did whatever it took to help the medical staff. Conditions were poor, but hundreds of lives were saved. ACTS opened a medical clinic across the street from the hospital to serve less critical patients. Teams were sent to remote refugee camps to set up mobile medical clinics; in total, nearly 2,000 people a day were seen. Two additional teams will travel to Haiti (April 24 and May 22) to assist in the transitioning efforts with the ACTS teams. We will donate $20,000 to ACTS/World Relief to assist in the ongoing rebuilding and care for the people of Haiti

Egypt Distributed Journey Informational Meeting Sunday, April 11, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., rooms 4206-7, Longwood site
Join with teams from Northland partner church Kasr El Dobara to reach out to the forgotten in Cairo and the villages near El Minya (Upper Egypt) — the orphans, elderly, disabled, homeless and sick. You will cradle babies in your arms, hold the hand of a child suffering from cancer and show the lonely in nursing homes that someone cares about them. You also will visit the most vulnerable — the homeless in Garbage City (aptly named because the people literally live in a garbage dump) and the City of the Dead, where families live among the tombstones of a cemetery. You will pray for and with the people and distribute food, blankets and hygiene products. Taking a prayer walk through the ancient streets of Cairo and Upper Egypt will be the fitting conclusion to this mission of mercy. Details: Betsy Dasse (bsdasse@aol. com or 407-620-4284)

R
emember being a teen and feeling awkward and unsure of where you belong? Often teens with disabilities spend much of their time wondering where they belong. We know the Bible makes it clear that Jesus has a strong love for those with disabilities. He invited the lame, deaf and blind to banquets, and told parables about inviting people to the party and making sure there was a place of honor. Over the last few years, Northland has developed an exciting partnership with Young Life Capernaum, a parachurch ministry committed to reaching teens for Jesus.
Many teens with special needs often struggle to develop relationships and do not get to attend many activities other teens attend. Young Life Capernaum gives young people with mental and physical disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, to develop fulfilling friendships, and to challenge their limits while building self-esteem through clubs, camps and other exciting activities. Young Life staff members and volunteers model Christ’s unconditional love and acceptance as they walk alongside these young adults, filling their lives with love and support. Young Life Capernaum meets at Northland at Longwood in the fellowship hall the fourth Friday of each month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. This includes dinner, fun and an opportunity to grow in faith! So if you are a teen with special needs or would like to become a volunteer, contact Laura Lee Wright (407-937-0549 or lauralee. wright@northlandchurch.net).

J
oin this engaging one-day seminar to learn how to tell the stories of God through your own life story. When asked what was most fulfilling about this seminar, recent participants responded: This is the first time I’ve ever written my story. I realized I was still carrying some baggage that I needed to give to Christ. Thank you! Hearing those around me share their stories publicly, hearing about the different styles of serving, seeing other believers wanting to grow in their faith. Learning I have a story, but not in the “traditional” sense. Christ was always in the car of my life, but I had Him locked in the trunk for several years. It’s a story I can now tell with practice. The encouragement that we are doing the work of God and that He is doing His work through us.
Upon taking this material, the most fulfilling was the recognition of what type of storyteller-evangelist I am and then knowing how to apply this to others. We should know that it is not what we say that matters; it is that we continue to say what God leads us to say regardless of outcome. It is not by our words that others are saved. God will save them even when we say the wrong things if they believe by faith in grace through the power of Jesus. I love you all, and I love Northland! Registration: 1) Visit www.northlandchurch.net. 2) Select “Get Equipped” on the top menu bar. 3) Select “Join a group or class!” 4) Find “Sharing Life Stories,” select “Join the Group.” 5) Then follow the online instructions. BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Easter Scripture focus:
Luke 24:1-12 (NASB)
..................................................................................................................................................
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.
Worship focus: ....................................................................
Worship Christ today as our living Savior. He lives and is seated at the right hand of the Father, making intercession for us. Because of His death, we are forgiven. Because He rose again, we have access to eternal life. Because of His love, we have hope.
summary prayer: ....................................................................
O God, who for our redemption gave your onlybegotten Son to the death of the cross, and by His glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with Him in the joy of His resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. (Phyllis Tickle, The Divine Hours)
