How to Have a Heaven-like Marriage A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love. - 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (The Message)

First Love

L

ast weekend, hundreds of us took steps forward in our spiritual journeys, in response to Pastor Joel’s invitation to return to our “First Love.” These kinds of decisions are made just about every day at Northland — in prayer rooms, in counseling offices, in classrooms, even online! It’s not every day, though, that we witness God moving on so many hearts in such a dramatic way. The vows that Dr. Hunter led us in are written here for you.

“I

state your name

take Thee, Lord,

to be my first love, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish so that death never parts, and thereto I pledge Thee my faith.”

Draw Near to God:

Sacred Gathering BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

T

• Umatilla Home Study Group — Sundays, 6:30 p.m., Moore home. Details: Hugh and Carole (352669-2851 or hughandcarole@embarqmail.com) family to eat, fellowship, worship and grow in God’s Word. The sacred assembly starts at 6 p.m. with a congregational potluck dinner. Pull out your recipe book, and make your favorite dish to share with your church family. Then we move into the sanctuary at 7 p.m. for worship. The CREW352 youth band leads us to God’s throne and prepares our hearts to receive the Word. This month I will teach on the sacred act of baptism. What does Scripture say about it? Why does God command His holy people to be baptized? We will consider these and other questions. The next Gathering takes place this Wednesday, April 21. Child care is provided for children age 8 and under during the worship service. Come together with your church family and experience the sacred presence. Come to the Gathering.

he word “sacred” descends partially from the Latin words sacrum, which referred to the gods or anything in their power, and sacer, which means priest. When God’s holy priests come together to focus on God, their gathering becomes sacred. This may sound like a convention of Catholic monks to you, but the Lord surprises when He says that Christians are “priests” and “holy.” He speaks of this in 1 Peter 2:9: “But you are a >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (NIV). In Christ, we become chosen, royal and holy because of Jesus’ perfect righteousness. It’s not what we do; it’s who we are in Jesus! And when the Mount Dora family of Northland comes together, we taste of the sacred reality of being the family of God. With this powerful truth in view, why not join the next Northland at Mount Dora Gathering? On the third Wednesday of each month, we come together as God’s holy The Gathering is a time of fun, family, food, fellowship and worship.

Supporting the Mission JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

I

love the the definition of “submission” I have heard Pastor Joel give so many times. It was the first time I heard it this way: “Submission is for one person to be in support of the other person’s mission.” Now, the world hears the word “submission” and usually thinks of it from a negative perspective, a person who is wielding power over another. But hey, that’s the world for you, totally misunderstanding yet another amazing principle given to us, as it says over and over throughout Deuteronomy, “so that it will be well with us.” See, God is the One who made us, so chances are, He knows what would be best for us, and so He gave us direction and instruction. But the temptation of believing we are god is often such that we don’t trust what He has told us as best, so we try to go and figure it out for ourselves. That is exactly what we have here, another direction given to us for the structure in our marriages that we have tried to rework because we think we can do better. Why does this happen? Well, in general, the answer is simple: We are sinful, selfish, fleshly people. As Paul says in Romans 3, none of us are righteous. But more than that, I have seen and experienced that in the battle between flesh and spirit there usually seems to be a diametrically opposed position, as if the enemy must present the opposite of God’s plan as the best option for us. It must be the most offensive. We often forget

5

that, as Paul says in Ephesians 6:12, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (NIV). There is a war waging, and it is first for our souls. Then if it’s not for our souls because we are already His, then it is for our effectiveness as soldiers in the war. And I have seen no greater war waged than in our homes and marriages. It is the place where the enemy has had more victory than anywhere else, I believe. Why? Well, because we all come from homes of some kind. Ruin it there, and affect generations forever. So the reverse tactic should be: Build it up there, and affect generations forever (listen to Sara Groves’ “Generations”). So how do you have a great marriage? Well, as oversimplified as this may sound, listen to Paul yet again in this week’s focus verse – Ephesians 5:21-26, 33 – because it is there that he gives us the secret: Husbands, love your wives, and wives, submit to your husbands. Men, love your wives like Christ loved the church, sacrificially and with deference, making them holy and pure. Women, support your husbands in their mission; respect them as you do the Lord. Here is where it gets tricky, as stated differently in verse 21: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” As important as it is for the man to have a godly, purposeful mission and for the woman to be lovable and respectful, neither of those is the reason for our living this way. It is Christ, who He is and what He has already done, that is our motivation, period. It has nothing to do with the other person; it has to do with you and Christ! Build strong marriages, and we will change the world, one home at a time, together. Get in a small group with your spouse, pray together, have fun and laugh as much as possible, but most importantly, love Christ together!

Prison Ministry Helping Inmates Reenter Society By GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads

H

ow does the world view you? How does your church view you? We might not ask ourselves these questions every day, but these questions weigh on the minds of men and women every day as they reenter our society once released from their incarceration. In the past month, we interviewed many people currently incarcerated in the Seminole and Orange County jails, and asked questions such as these. Their answers to these questions have provided awareness to our community and church body of how to best serve them during a difficult transition period in their lives. We asked, “How does the outside world view you?” and received answers such as: • You could change if you want it bad enough. • You’re just going to return. • You’ll never get a job. • You’re a drug addict. • You’ll never amount to anything. • You’re tainted. • You’re vulgar. • You’re uneducated. • You are forever a bad person.

Our Prison & Jail Ministry team will join forces with many other churches in Central Florida participating in a collaborative faith-based transition program known as Healing and Transition (HAT). This program will provide mentor advocate training to those who want to walk alongside the “returning citizens” of our community. The HAT program will be offered within the chaplain faith-based dorms at the Orange County Correctional facility in the coming months. We have the privilege to be joining forces with the Annie E. Casey Foundation (www.aecf.org), which has been instrumental in the development of the Healing Communities model for jail and prisoner reentry. This project offers tools and instruction on how to provide an atmosphere that will be what they call a station of hope for Returning Citizens, their families and victims of crimes. Their research has shown that a significant number of congregation members in every church either have a family member who is incarcerated or have been affected by incarceration. Through our association with Christian Association for Prison Aftercare (CAPA) and Healing Communities, we have the necessary foundation to possibly change the life of an individual and his or her family.

“I was in prison, and you came to Me.” – Matthew 25:36 (NASB)

Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to the Beehive! I’m Buzz. Stick with me during our family worship service, and we’ll learn more about who God is and what He has done!

We worship Jesus today for His love. He showed His love when He gave His life for us. When we love God with all our heart, soul and mind, that’s worship!

To follow is to go along with or take the same direction as the leader. Ask God to show you when to lead and when to follow. It is important to respect all leaders and followers.

Today’s buzzword is RESPECT! I heard it _____________ times. I think it’s important to God because __________________________________________________

Unscramble the letters below to spell the keys to being a good friend .

VE L O D A N T C E P E S R __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ Answer: LOVE AND RESPECT

Love and Respect

1 Corinthians 13:1-3; Ephesians 5:21 In Paul’s first letter to the Ephesians, he taught husbands and wives how to love and respect one another. He wrote, “Follow the lead of one another because of your respect for Christ.” In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul wrote that love is the most important and valuable gift we have. He wrote, “Suppose I speak in the languages of human beings and of angels. If I don’t have love, I am only a loud gong or a noisy cymbal. Suppose I have the gift of prophecy. Suppose I can understand all the secret things of God and know everything about him. And suppose I have enough faith to move mountains. If I don’t have love, I am nothing at all. Suppose I give everything I have to poor people. And suppose I give my body to be burned. If I don’t have love, I get nothing at all.”

Draw a picture of someone you respect.

I respect that.

or the next several weeks, Pastor Joel will preach about how to build great families. Consider the importance of worshiping together as a family. If your children are young, consider involving them in online worship for a part of a service each week. It can be a great way to introduce them to corporate worship. In addition, there will be an article here each week to give you more ideas on how you can worship as a family. Children are a special part of God’s Kingdom. He delights in their worship because they approach His throne with an enviable innocent and simple faith. In fact, Jesus held children up as examples of how all believers should participate in His Kingdom:

“He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 18:2-4 (NIV)

worship experiences. Here are a few tips to help you get started: • Discuss with your children why God wants us to worship Him. Explain what they can expect in a worship service and the behavior they should show in order to honor God. Show excitement over worshiping together; it’s contagious! • Create a worship folder. Ask your children to decorate a hard-covered three-ring binder. Insert blank paper and colored pencils. During listening moments in the service, ask them to write or draw what they see and hear. Suggest they include questions they want to talk about with you later. • Go to the Beehive section in the center of the Northland News. There, children will find Scripture, puzzles and games that correspond with the worship service they are attending.

re you struggling through the pain of divorce? God’s heart is especially tender toward the downtrodden and defeated. He knows your name, and He sees every tear you shed. Join DivorceCare, and walk alongside others through this difficult time. The 13-week gathering follows a DVD series and uses a small group format to provide a safe place where participants can focus on personal growth, deal with hurts, and evaluate the choices they have made in order to be transformed by God and seek reconciliation. The leaders of DivorceCare do not advocate divorce, and they encourage all couples to seek reconciliation where possible. It is recommended that if you have marital problems, you seek wise counsel. BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ How to Have a Heaven-like Marriage Scripture focus:

Ephesians 5:21-26, 33 (NASB)

Worship focus:

.........................................................................................................................................

.............................................................................

…be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Worship Christ today for His sacrificial love. Our identity is found in Him who laid down His life for us.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word… Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

summary prayer: .............................................................................

Most gracious God, we give you thanks for your tender love in sending Jesus Christ to come among us, to be born of a human mother, and to make the way of the cross to be the way of life. We thank you, also, for consecrating the union of man and woman in his Name. By the power of your Holy Spirit, pour out the abundance of your blessing on the couples represented here. Defend them from every enemy.

NOTES:

Let their love for each other be a seal upon their hearts, a mantle about their shoulders, and a crown upon their foreheads. Bless them in their work and in their companionship; in their sleeping and in their waking; in their joys and in their sorrows; in their life and in their death. Finally, in your mercy, bring them to that table where your saints feast for ever in your heavenly home; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. — Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer (1979)
