A Holy Land Experience By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations
N
ext Saturday, you are invited to take advantage of a rare opportunity to learn about life in the Holy Land ... from the perspective of an Arab Evangelical Christian. Botrus Mansour is general director of Nazareth Baptist School (NBS), in Israel. As a believer in Jesus, Mr. Mansour says that he is part of a “minority within a minority: an Arab minority within a Jewish state, and a Christian minority within an ArabMuslim majority. As an Botrus Mansou Evangelical myself, I am also a minority among Christians in Israel.” In Israel, cultural and religious diversity takes on a real physical and geographical dimension. The different traditions of faith are rooted in different locations around the country and act as a reminder of this diversity, Mr. Mansour explains. In a radius of just half a mile in Jerusalem, one can touch the sites of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and ascension to heaven; on the other hand, it is the holiest place for the Jews, the ruins of the temple. It is also Islam’s third most holy site, the Dome of the Rock. Despite the challenges that come with being a minority group, Christians in Israel are thriving in many ways, Mr. Mansour says. “A tangible example for me is the 90 percent of students of the school that I lead [who] continue their studies for higher education. Our school has also achieved the highest number of prizes among
schools worldwide in the international contest ‘The First Step to the Nobel Prize in Physics.’” He adds that followers of Christ in Israel serve in key positions in the country. “Despite our small numbers, we have influence that exceeds it,” Mr. Mansour says. Pastor Joel C. Hunter, who met Mr. Mansour when he was teaching Arab pastors in Israel in 2009, says that this visit to Northland provides us with “an historic opportunity to come alongside and support Arab believers in Israel.” Born in 1965, Mr. Mansour holds an MBA from Haifa University and has worked as a lawyer in Nazareth for many years. He is a co-founder of the Local Baptist Church— Nazareth (the largest Evangelical church in Israel) and serves as an elder. Mr. Mansour is also a founding member of Nazareth Village and served on its board for several years. He co-founded the Israel Education Forum, which brings together Messianic and Evangelical educational organizations in Israel, and serves as a member of its board.
Students at Nazareth Baptist School in Israel are a part of a diverse culture.

Page also excels in encouraging adults. She has been a devoted team player in various ministry roles and is eager to equip and inspire the volunteers who serve in the Mount Dora Children’s Ministries. Page officially begins her role as Mount Dora Children’s Ministries coordinator in early May. A huge thank you goes out to Lori Gagnon for serving as our interim coordinator since late February. Lori, you have really set us up to succeed! We are grateful for your sacrificial service to the Lord and to the children and families of Northland at Mount Dora. Please take a moment and encourage Page. Also, consider joining the Children’s Ministries volunteer team in Mount Dora. Be used by God to raise up heaven-filled children and Page Patnode, the new Northland at Mount Dora Children’s Ministries coordinator. heaven-sent parents!
his weekend Pastor Joel is teaching us how to become heaven-sent fathers and mothers. God’s heart is for Christian parents to hand the baton of faith down to their children. For our kids to become heaven-filled followers of Christ, we need to be heaven-sent dads and moms! We at Northland want to walk alongside you in the sacred task of raising your children to know, love and serve Jesus. The Lord has raised up someone very special to help. Page Patnode and her husband, Gene, have been members of the Northland family for well over a decade. For the last four years, they have called the Mount Dora site their home church. As small group hosts and Children’s Ministries servants, the Patnodes have made wonderful contributions to the Mount Dora congregation. And now we are blessed to have Page as our Children’s Ministries coordinator! God has ministered to children through Page for many years. Page and Gene raised two wonderful daughters to adulthood. She also has cared for children in her home and as a nanny in the service

Mr. Mansour joined the staff of NBS in 2003 as a part-time assistant to the general director, and became general director in 2004. He is a graduate of NBS, and his three children are currently students there. His wife, A’bir, is an educational counselor at NBS. Parenting in the Family of God JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e are called the body of Christ, the family of God, sons and daughters of the King, and each other’s brothers and sisters. There is so much family language in Scripture from beginning to end that you could say it is one of the major themes of our faith. We are told that because of Christ’s completed work, we have been adopted and made heirs according to the promise, sharing in His suffering and His glory, having the hope of eternal life (Romans 8:17; Galatians 3:29; Titus 3:17). Family is key! I come from an Italian family and dominant part of the country, upstate New York. One of the things I grew up appreciating was the incredible emphasis placed on family in the Italian subculture. “La familia” is the statement I would hear spoken from parent to child in my friends’ homes, reminding them that it was their family that would always be there for them, and that they would always need to be there for. Not all of us have great family memories, and that can make this concept very challenging to accept. Remember that things are not always as they ought to be here; everything is affected by sin and the fall. But there is a place and a family that is perfect, and Christ has invited you and me into it, forever!
One of the toughest roles one can have in a family is that of a parent. I always thought it was tough being a kid, but wow, being a parent is so much harder. Now I am not only trying to live this life and glorify God as I do it, but I am also trying to lead, inspire and develop others to do the same. I already felt inadequate, unprepared and incapable of completing the task set before me, and guess what? I am. But “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NKJV). Paul explains to us in Romans 5 that it is Christ who has done all the work necessary; we are simply to respond out of that reality, letting the Holy Spirit work through us in all things. Remember that we will never do it perfectly this side of heaven. As a parent now of three kids under age 5, I realize that teaching them is so much more about the lessons being caught than taught. My words are not nearly as effective as my behaviors. That being so, I am better off, as Paul says to the Ephesians and Thessalonians both, being an “imitator of Christ,” living a life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. I must live with the fruits of the Spirit evident in my own life, displaying to my children the rewards of the promise that God gave: “Honor your father and mother … that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth” (Ephesians 6:2-3, NIV). He gave this instruction and corresponding promise time and time again to the Israelites, and we are reminded of it in this week’s focus verse on parenting, Ephesians 6:1-4. Obey, that you may enjoy; and remember, it is He who is in us, who will give us what we need when we need it to be obedient and thus enjoy.

Care for, Comfort Orphans in Sri Lanka
A
s a result of more than two decades of Civil War, tens of thousands of Sri Lankan children have been orphaned having lost parents in the bloody battle. To help support this war-torn country, a Distributed Journey is planned for June 4 to 14 and it costs $2,800. During this mission trip — in partnership with Pastor Adrian de Visser and Kithu Sevana Church — team members will work directly with orphans in a fun Vacation Bible School atmosphere at a camp just outside Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The goal is to bring the hope and joy of Jesus Christ to these orphans. The ability to give hugs, share of yourself and love on these precious children is the only requirement. Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to the Beehive! I’m Buzz. Stick with me during our family worship service, and we’ll learn more about who God is and what He has done!
We worship God today as our heavenly Father, who loves us. He made each of us with different strengths. When we use them to love Him and others — that’s worship!

Children and Parents Ephesians 6:1-4
The Bible teaches us how to love God and one another. A great way to love your parent or the person who takes care of you is to obey. The Bible says, “Children, obey your parents as believers in the Lord. Obey them because it’s the right thing to do.” A great way for parents to love their children is to teach them about the Lord. The Bible tells fathers to train their children and teach them the ways of the Lord. Parents who love the Lord try to help children do their best to use all their gifts to love the Lord and one another well.
Draw a picture of yourself obeying the one who takes care of you.

Family Worship
Building a Firm Foundation Together An interview with Debbie Blahnik
reach age 13. We do not want to miss the opportunity to teach children who God is and what He has done, while they are young.
F
or the next several weeks, Pastor Joel will preach about how to build great families. Consider the importance of worshiping together as a family. If your children are young, consider involving them in online worship for a part of a service each week. It can be a great way to introduce them to corporate worship. In addition, there will be an article here each week to give you more ideas on how you can worship as a family. Each week, your family at Northland invests vast amounts of time and resources into the spiritual growth of its children — your children. Northland intentionally works to provide Bible-centered children’s activities and events at the highest level of excellence. Read what Debbie Blahnik, director of Children’s Ministries at the Longwood site, has to say about this: Q: Why does Northland focus on providing excellent ministry to children? A: We believe that children who are introduced to Jesus and given biblical training early in life have a much higher chance of forming a relationship with Him. Barna Group’s research states that almost half of all Christians, 43 percent, accept Christ before they
Q: Sometimes parents can feel overwhelmed or not equipped to talk with their children about accepting Christ and to provide their spiritual training. What resources do you recommend? A: We would love to assist parents and answer their questions! Our Children’s Ministry team is always here for them. We also provide an excellent, very simple guide they can use to lead their children through the salvation process. They can access the New Believers Guide at this link: (www.nacdweb. org/files/warehouse/OtherResources/NewBelieversGuide. pdf) or request a copy from a Children’s Ministries leader or volunteer.
Joy Johnson is a dedicated volunteer in our early childhood ministry.
Q: Since a high percentage of Christians accept Christ as children, should parents be the ones to talk with their children about that relationship? A: Absolutely! It is very important that parents take on the role of spiritual leadership in their families. Barna research also shows that half of children who accept Christ are led to Him by their parents. Although we strive to bring the Word of God to children in the most creative and resourceful ways, the church should not replace the parents as the primary spiritual teachers and role models. To assist parents in feeling confident in teaching their children at home, we provide many opportunities and resources. These resources include Children’s Church, Intergenerational Family Worship Services, Young Believers classes that involve both parents and children, and daily family devotions, which are given to each child every week for the purpose of encouraging parental involvement and guidance.

Drawing Families Together
“M
y family needs help! I can’t believe it was only a few years ago that I found myself thinking that. My name is Jill Kimball, and my husband, Neal, and I were desperately trying to raise our four children in the midst of our hectic daily lives. Neal was working just as hard as he could to make sure we had everything we needed, and I was working just as hard as I could to run the house and the kids in an efficient and loving manner, but it just kept on getting harder and harder … and no matter how hard we were working at keeping it all together, it felt like we were all slowly but surely drifting apart. Does any of this sound familiar? Dad and/or Mom works hard every day, and some nights and weekends, your kids go off to school and all their after-school activities, and their soccer games on the weekends – and you’re all trying to manage a household, trying to get your work done, and trying to keep the whole thing together. Meanwhile, the pressure of all the things that you need to do seem like they’re combining and piling up and keeping you from doing the things you want to do. And I’m talking about the most basic wants, what you wanted to do when you decided to have kids, and that was that you wanted to be a family. — Jill Kimball, Drawing Families Together Jill Kimball is not only the author of the book Drawing Families Together, but along with her husband, Neal, is the creator of the Family Table Time system. Family Table Time is all about valuing the family table again
and reconnecting the family. Family Table Time is a product designed to bring families together to build strong family values. Simply stated, the Family Table Time kit is an interactive tool to make mealtime fun and ultimately help bring families closer together. It is a weekly family meeting kit that is practical, simple and fun! The Family Table Time System includes a Family Meeting Recipe Planner and a Family Table Time place mat for each week, which makes the completion of the week’s exercise easy and fun. These kits are available at the Northland Bookstore. Details: www.familytabletime.com

ife has a way of taking a toll on relationships, perhaps especially marriages. Couples start out fully focused on each other. But as the years go by, the time for relaxing together and enjoying each other gives way to responsibilities and busy schedules. Before you know it, checking e-mail on Saturday is more important than date night. Family Life’s Weekend to Remember conference provides a chance for you to get away from the distractions of daily life and reconnect with your spouse. Cell phones are shut off. To-do lists are temporarily forgotten. It’s a time to slow down and reconnect. Each conference provides a warm, engaging atmosphere and a focus on making progress rather than placing blame. The insightful speakers teach how to work through differences, improve communication and rekindle romance. The June conferences are scheduled for: • June 4-6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ How to Be a Heaven-sent Parent Scripture focus:
Ephesians 6:1-4 (NASB)
.........................................................................................................................................
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your Father and Mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
NOTES:
Worship focus: .............................................................................
Worship Christ today for His boundless love. He welcomes us as His children.
summary prayer: .............................................................................
Dear Father, We cherish Your love and mercy to us. We need it just as we need Your instruction and discipline. Use our relationships with our parents and children to teach us about our relationship with You, and help us to reflect Your nature in those relationships. Amen.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Happy Together … growing together as we grow in Christ | Expanding Your Family | Exodus 2:1-10
