Welcome to Northland on Sunday Nights! sean cooper Northland on Sunday Nights Site Minister

O

ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, and then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through the following ways: • Northland News (This section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sunday nights) • E-mail (Receive a weekly update. Sign up by e-mailing sean.cooper@northlandchurch.net.) • Upcoming responses

This past Sunday, many gathered after the 6 p.m. service to help assemble food packages for Haiti with Kids Against Hunger.

Kids colored and decorated the boxes into which the meals were loaded.

02 May — Dessert Potluck Night

Call it a dessert extravaganza! Or call it a potluck of sweets. Either way, join us after the worship gathering for some sweets. Here’s the deal: Bring your favorite dessert and drop it off in the foyer (no sneaking it into the sanctuary for mid-worship fuel). Space will be provided to refrigerate any necessary treats. After service, stick around. Meet some people. Load up on sugar.

09 May — Generous Living Challenge

We’re keeping details on this response to worship on the down low. You’ll have to come out and just see what happens … >>> www.facebook.com/sundaynights

Together the teams assembled 25,000 meals to go directly to Haiti. This is just one of the many events planned for the Sunday 6 p.m. congregation.

The Power of Encouragement BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

Barnabas’ encouragement came at a critical time in Mark’s life, and we know that it made all the difference. Many years later, Paul, while imprisoned and awaiting trial in Rome, wrote to Timothy: “Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry” (2 Timothy 4:11, NIV). Expand Your Family JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

Y

ou may be here alone, with your spouse, your kids, neighbors or some friends. It doesn’t really matter because you are here, right now! If you are a believer or you are someone checking this “church thing” out, again, it doesn’t matter because you are here, right now! So the question is, What are you going to do with that reality, that somehow you ended up right here, right now? We talk about the importance of community here a lot. We try to create as many possible entry points for people to enter into relationship with one another and with Christ in some new and deeper way. From the space and environment of the Sunday worship experience to the many smaller connections that occur each week around town (i.e., classes, small groups, neighborhood gatherings, prayer groups, outreach), there is always intentionality and purpose, and that is Christ and you and others getting to know one another better. Why? We know from the study of the early church and some of the most vibrant church movements

5

THIS WEEKend! Northland at Oviedo family lunch around the world right now that relationships (us to Christ and to one another) + service + time = transformed lives. Transformed lives make transformed communities. We want to create as many opportunities for that to happen as possible, each and every week, in here on Sundays and out there throughout the week. That brings us to today. Since the dawn of the church, sharing a meal has held a very special place in the formation of those relationships to one another and to Him. That’s what we are going to do today, eat together right here, right now! But let’s take another look at the why behind the why. Paul says it two different ways. First, in Romans 12:2, he says, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (NIV). Then, in 2 Corinthians 3:18, he says it this way: “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (NIV). We are transformed by the renewing of our minds, which comes from the Lord, and being together in relationship and community as that happens is almost as essential and primary as the eating of the meal is to our faith. There were people at the Last Supper eating with Christ. The togetherness and the meal were a vital part of the transforming that would take place that only comes from the Lord! So, eat and be transformed!

GO EAT AND BE TRANSFORMED!

Sunday, May 2, after the 11 a.m. service. Let’s enjoy a meal together and grow closer as a family. Join in this time of food, fun, family and fellowship. westoaksnews Thank You, Derika and Dan!

Derika Hacker is moving after nearly 2 years as West Oaks Children’s coordinator. TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister

A

fter almost two years of serving as the West Oaks Children’s Ministries coordinator, Derika Hacker is moving to Colorado with her family because of Dan’s new job. So this will be Derika’s last week with us, as she is preparing their house for the move. I know I speak for all of us here at West Oaks when I say Derika has made a difference in this community, to those with and without kids. I am so grateful to have had a leader in our Children’s Ministries who truly loves the work she does and is very gifted at making it happen. I know it has not been an easy thing to manage volunteers, create a welcoming environment for kids and families, and make sure every week happens without a glitch, but Derika has done all of this and much, much more! On behalf of the Leadership Team, we want to thank Derika for filling many roles on a weekly basis. In many ways, she filled the role of site coordinator, which goes above and beyond her job description. But because of who she is and her desire to serve Christ, she was willing to do what was necessary to allow all of us the opportunity to worship our heavenly Father with minimal distractions. And for that, I am truly grateful! As far as the Children’s Ministries go, many of you have called or e-mailed me to let me know how much your children

not only are learning about Jesus, but also are applying what they are learning on Sundays to everyday stuff. From praying together with their families to reading their Bibles on their own, our kids are truly growing into true followers of Christ. And because of this, we are so grateful for Derika and the way she served our West Oaks community. And I also will say that her husband, Dan, whom some of you may not know very well, or may not have met, has played a huge role in our Children’s Ministries. Dan has totally supported his wife as she was led to Children’s Ministries. Dan has been our number one volunteer tech and maintenance guy since they have been a part of the West Oaks community. Dan, thank you for how you selflessly gave yourself away to the families that worship with us each week! Both of you have had a strong commitment to our families, and we will all miss you very much. And we will all miss the boys! When you think of boys from here on out, I am sure this is the image you will see. It has been a joy to see them show up with dad and mom early each week and to hear them say to me, “Pastor Tommy” every time they saw me. Dan and Derika, thank you for sharing your family with us as you served your Savior. You have made a difference in the lives of many of us. Whether it was through your small group, a service project, or teaching our children, or just in relationship with so many, you have touched our lives in a powerful way. Thank you, thank you, thank you! And may God continue to use you wherever you go, and bless you as you faithfully love Him first and then love those He puts around you. You will be missed! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

they are loved and being prayed for, so they sent me off with the sweetest letters to hand out. ICS helped to make the Second Annual Kingdom Noise Soccer Tournament possible through its prayer and support. The soccer tournament serves to bring together the community, as six schools attended this year to enjoy a game they love.

uring the first week of April, elder Thom Willis, Sean Cooper, Jeremiah Shaw, Rachael Spangenberg and I traveled to Swaziland to continue Northland’s five-year relationship with the village of Siteki. Mr. Willis continually reminded us, “We are more alike than we are different.” His words could not capture more clearly the surprising relationship we have found in Siteki. I have had the privilege of working with the students at International Community School (ICS) to serve those in Swaziland. These American elementary students are children of God with hearts for service. The Story of Baby Moses Exodus 2:1-10

When Moses was born, God’s people were called Hebrews. The evil Pharaoh (the king of Egypt) was taking away all the Hebrew baby boys in Egypt. When Moses’ mother could hide him no longer, she put him into a basket and placed it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister watched to see what would happen to him. Later, Pharaoh’s daughter found the basket in the reeds. She opened it and saw baby Moses crying. She had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” When Moses’ sister was told to get a nurse for her baby brother, she asked her mother to be his nurse. Baby Moses was now part of a bigger family. Pharaoh’s daughter kept him safe from the evil Pharaoh.

Yes.

Family Worship

Big Concepts and Young Minds

O

ver the past several weeks, Pastor Joel has been preaching about how to build great families. Consider the importance of worshiping together as a family. If your children are young, consider involving them in online worship for a part of a service each week. It can be a great way to introduce them to corporate worship. In addition, there will be an article here each week to give you more ideas on how you can worship as a family. Apologetics. Catechism. Righteousness. You hardly noticed the big words used in sermons and songs until you started worshiping with your children. Now those same words seem almost foreign as you consider how they sound to your 7-year-old daughter or your 9-year-old son. You wonder, How can my children worship and learn in the same service where I am also being challenged as an adult? God’s Holy Spirit is the answer. The Holy Spirit helps each child, adult, seeking person, new believer and seasoned Christian understand and apply what he or she encounters in worship at the person’s own level. In a particular service, God may give you a deeper understanding of how to defend your faith. In that same service, He may show your children that He is worthy of their praise. Your children may not need to understand the big terms and themes to fully participate in

corporate worship, but God does want you to take advantage of them and create teaching moments for your children. Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. — Ephesians 6:4 (NIV, emphasis added) Try picking one basic concept from each family service you attend, and explore it together. For example, next week Pastor Joel will preach about raising children that connect to God and others. You could use these ideas to discuss baptism with your children: Before the service • Read the Scripture passage together: Mark 10:13-16. Discuss how Jesus’ words and actions showed that children are special to Him. During the service • Ask your children to listen for something new that they learn in the sermon, and then write about it or draw it in their worship folders. After the service • Talk about your own personal experience with the sermon theme. • Ask the children for their favorite illustration from the sermon, and how it applied. • If your second- to fifth-grade children show interest in how they can connect more to God, they can take the Steps for Young Believers class. Details: Teri Grayson (407949-7148 or teri.grayson@northlandchurch.net).

You Can Change a Child’s Life

Consider adopting, fostering, mentoring or volunteering. by Rhonda Murphy Community Based Care of Seminole

M

any of you plan to have children. Some of you have tried without success to have children. Maybe you are single, but want a child. No matter your situation, if you desire a child, there are many ways to fulfill this wish. And by doing so, you can help a child in our community have a bright future. Unfortunately, some children do not have their biological parents in their lives. Perhaps the children have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Whether that is for a short time or permanently, the nonprofit Community Based Care of Seminole County (CBC) helps these children grow up safe, healthy and fulfilled in families that love and nurture them. CBC accomplishes this by developing and managing a comprehensive, coordinated, communitybased system of care for abused, neglected and abandoned children and their families. CBC, whose mission is to protect and inspire every child every day, offers many opportunities to help children in our community. So if you have the means and desire to parent, CBC needs you. So do the children. With the help of CBC, you can change the life of a child and help him or her overcome hardships and obstacles. Here’s how: • Become a foster parent. • Give a child or children their forever home through adoption. • Volunteer to teach life skills – such as banking, budgeting, interviewing, employment training and parenting skills – to foster teens. • Give your time for such things as clerical work, event organization, grant writing, partnership securing and sponsorships. • Donate or collect school supplies, backpacks, notebooks, paper, pens and so on. • Buy new clothing and personal items for teenage boys and girls. • Make a financial contribution.

CBC has been helping children and families in Seminole County since 2004. CBC’s formula of caring for and working with children and families in their own back yard, rather than managing and overseeing the program at a state or national level, has proved to be very effective. CBC of Seminole, recognized as one of the nation’s preeminent organizations for children and families, works with state and national agencies, but it is through partnerships within the community, with neighbors and in faith-based groups that CBC develops and offers programs that correlate with the needs of those it serves.

CBC of Seminole at Northland If you are interested in learning how to help children in our community, a representative from CBC of Seminole will be in the foyer after every service from Saturday, May 1 to Monday, May 3, and from Saturday, May 8 to Monday, May 10 at the Longwood and Oviedo sites. Also, CBC of Seminole will hold a Foster and Adoption Information Session on

Marty would love to find his forever family.

May 8 at 6:30 p.m. in room 4206-07 at the Longwood site. Experts in fostering and adoption will discuss the process to foster and adopt in Florida and will answer commonly asked questions. For those interested in beginning the foster or adoption process, CBC of Seminole will hold a Foster and Adoption Course (PRIDE) from May 19 through August 4 at Northland. This 30-hour course is required by the state of Florida to become a licensed foster or adoptive parent. Details, and information sessions or orientation sign-up: Rhonda Murphy (rmurphy56@cfl.rr.com or 1-866-90-CHILD) CBC of Seminole is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and donations are tax-deductible.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ Expanding Your Family Scripture focus:

Exodus 2:1-10 (NASB)

Worship focus:

....................................................................................................................................................

........................................................................

Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him. The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Worship Christ today for His boundless love. He welcomes us as His children, giving us the inheritance of eternal life.

NOTES:

summary prayer: ........................................................................

All glorious God, we give you thanks: in your Son, Jesus Christ, you have given us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. You chose us, before the world was made, to be your holy people, without fault in your sight. You adopted us as your children in Christ. You have set us free by his blood; you have forgiven our sins. You have made known to us your secret purpose, to bring heaven and earth into unity in Christ. You have given us your Holy Spirit, the seal and pledge of our inheritance. All praise and glory be yours, O God, for the richness of your grace, for the splendor of your gifts, for the wonder of your love. —based on Ephesians 1:3-18 (Worship Sourcebook, pg. 63)
