Raising Teenagers That Connect with God and Others A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER
When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twentyone, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. —-~Mark Twain, “Old Times on the Mississippi” Atlantic Monthly, 1874

O
ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.
Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/ sundaynights) • E-mail (Receive a weekly update. Sign up by e-mailing sean.cooper@northlandchurch.net.)
The best part about Sunday nights is the fellowship, and the sense of purpose that comes when doing the work of Christ.
The meal packets assembled go to help the people of Haiti.

16 May — Donate, Sort, Pack Clothes
Join us tonight after the service to help sort, fold and pack collected clothes! This great service project helps our community by providing clothes to several local organizations. The volunteer hours we provide tonight go a long way in helping those in need. If you have children, pick them up and have them join you!
23 May — Ice Cream Social
Florida temperatures are escalating, and it’s time to break out the ice cream! Here’s what to do: On Sunday, May 23, bring a pint, half-gallon or gallon of ice cream, along with a favorite topping. As you come into the foyer, Sarah Mattingly will have several freezers to keep them cold during service. After church, join everyone out by the playground for some tasty treats. Should you bring the kids? Probably.
Worship, prayer, fellowship and fashionable head gear. It doesn’t get better than this!
Each ingredient is scooped into the funnel and drops into a bag, which is then weighed, sealed and packed into a box.

ith Pastor Joel’s continued focus on Heaven-sent families, and a laser focus on raising teenagers who connect with God and others, we have a packed foyer this week, so be sure to check out each of the ministries doing just that and more:
Mission Interact (focus on teens)
www.missioninteract.com Mission Interact consists of followers of Christ from various partnered churches throughout the Oviedo area supporting strong relationships among youth and founded on Christ. Those followers go outside of the walls of particular churches and serve on mission to their own community so that they may be one in Christ and stand united at school, in sports and in their neighborhoods, that the world may know the Gospel through their unity.
Compassion International (focus on kids)
www.compassion.com Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty, and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. Founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter,

Sponsor a child today for less than the cost of a dinner out, $38 per month. Your tax-deductible contribution connects your child with a loving, church-based child sponsorship program that provides food, clean water, medical care, educational opportunities and important life skills training, and, most importantly, your sponsored child will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God.
Diana Oxford: Give Them Back! Ministries
Many of the women of Bosnia and throughout Europe have been subjected to abuse and other atrocities and live under the oppressive grip of the enemy. Many missionaries and leaders on the field carry deep wounds, as Diana Oxford once did, that hinder their effectiveness in ministry. Most of them have lost everything – their husbands, sons and fathers; their personal dignity; their life savings; their sense of safety and security; their hope for the future; and much more. Diana’s simple passion is to wrestle back all who live under the enemy’s oppressive grip, and the need for that in Bosnia and Europe is great. She is returning to ministry in Bosnia and Europe with her good friend and former teammate Wendy Larson, and launching Give Them Back! Ministries under the umbrella of an organization called Ministry Essentials. Her desire is to engage in the full-time ministry of gathering groups of women together, teaching openly and offering other community-oriented evangelistic training. Her goal is to arrive back in Sarajevo by September, and she is in the process of developing a prayer and financial team to partner with her in Give Them Back! Ministries.

westoaksnews How Do I Make a Difference? TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
“W
hatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40, NIV). So if you gave clothes today for the clothes drive, you are making a difference. If you smiled at someone who needed a smile, you are making a difference. If you cared for someone recently, you are making a difference. If you give joyfully, you are making a difference. This can go on and on and on. Jesus was not just saying those words to fill space in a book; He meant those words as the truth. When we see others as Jesus would see them, everything about our perspective changes. I came across a quote from Mother Teresa last week that helped me realize the different ways I can make a difference every day: Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting. In the slums we are the light of God’s kindness to the poor. To children, to the poor, to all who suffer and are lonely, give always a happy smile — give them not only your care, but also your heart.
I heard a long time ago that we communicate 750 ways other than verbally. If this is true, what are some ways you
are communicating Christ’s love to those around you? To those no one else loves? To the people who are hard to love? What are the nonverbal ways you are communicating? You always have an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life just by the expression on your face, a kind word or even a gentle touch. In a book I just started reading, Compelled by Love: How to Change the World Through the Simple Power of Love in Action, by Heidi Baker with Shara Pradhan, I was challenged to the core of who I am when I read about the parable of the Great Banquet. I don’t know how many times I have asked why we are not seeing a great harvest and then I feel so frustrated by that same thing. In the parable about the Great Banquet, it is the poor and the hurting who eventually fill the table. Most of us try to go after the same people, but they don’t want to come. They are content doing their own thing, enjoying their money and possessions and making excuses for why they can’t come. I believe God is looking for servant lovers, those people who are passionate for Christ and filled with love for Him, and willing to do whatever it takes to get people to the banquet table. We can make a difference by revealing the heart of Christ to everyone – not just the ones we are comfortable around. Are you someone who can already taste the feast and know it’s about to begin? I pray you can no longer be content and stay in your comfort zones, but you will do whatever it takes to call the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame to the banquet table. If you do this, showing them the love of God, they will come. So how do I make a difference? By being Jesus with skin on! I am so blessed to serve with each one of you. >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

God Moves During Distributed Journeys BY pattI harshey Northland Distributed Journeys Administrator, Service
W
e have had a successful launch of our 2010 Distributed Journeys! Hundreds of Northlanders have made their “someday” today and are excitedly preparing for their mission trip with their team members. Other team members have already served and have returned with wonderful testimonies and stories of lives they have touched and relationships they have built with our sisters and brothers in Christ around the globe. We are pleased to share some of their incredible stories with you below. You, too, can experience a mission trip and make today your “someday.” Visit www.somedayistoday.com for a list of available trips, and answer God’s call.
“In the early morning hours, our team excitedly boarded the plane, beginning our journey to Swaziland, where we would be joined by a second Northland team as well as a team from our partnerships in South Africa. For each person on our team, it was a return trip; for two of us, a third trip. We understood Paul’s heart when he wrote, “God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.” Our friends (children and adults) in Swaziland had become very dear to us, as had those we were serving alongside. All along, we have been blown away by the Swazis’ love for Jesus. Each year we see that relationship with Christ deepen despite their circumstances brought on by generational poverty and HIV/AIDS. We have witnessed growth in community development, as a small group of Swazis goes door to door to share Christ. Through this outreach, the local people are building community by sharing resources and teaching spiritual/parenting/health lessons. We see leaders rising up to develop businesses, the school being completed to grade seven, and plans being made for furthering the education of the students. As we work alongside the people of Swaziland and South Africa as they share their beautiful hearts for Christ, we are the ones who benefit. We see the hope of Christ and what God can do despite circumstances. We are reminded at the end of each trip that it is never just what we are going to do for God or others on a Distributed Journey; it’s what God is going to grow and change in us.” — Marianne Testa, team leader, Swaziland 1 Distributed Journey
Construction continues at Breaking Free, a residential recovery ministry.
“A team of six people from Northland was at Breaking Free in Davisboro, Georgia, from March 20 to 25 to help construct two buildings that will each have six guest rooms. Breaking Free is a residential drug and alcohol treatment program for men ages 17 to 24. The guest rooms will be for family members of those in the program so they can visit and participate and be a part of the recovery process. We had a blessed time working and fellowshiping with the young men and staff of Breaking Free. This is the first of three trips this year from Northland that will work on this project. We built the walls and roof of one of the buildings. In the process of working with these young men, it was a blessing to give and serve as a part of the Lord’s encouragement to these young men. Several of the team members have established relationships with some of the young men, have stayed in contact, and plan to return to serve and encourage.” — Bud Abt, team leader, Breaking Free Distributed Journey “There were amazing blessings in Egypt! God put together a team of eight from Northland who worked with children whose parents are missionaries in the Middle East. This journey was uniquely different from working with orphan or street children. These are children raised in Christian homes with unique challenges. Many are moved from place to place where they don’t speak the language. They are in areas where Christianity is not “cool”; therefore, they are ridiculed, and sometimes fear for their safety and the safety of their parents. We played, did crafts, worshiped together and explored the parables of Jesus. We each had unique opportunities to begin unwrapping the layers that surround them and even led one to pray the salvation prayer for the first time. We encouraged them and let them know that they are not alone and that they, too, have a story to tell even at their young age. We’re connected by the love of Jesus even across the continent. This was a wonderful experience. All our lives were changed forever.” — Debbie Blahnik, team leader, Egypt 1 Distributed Journey Janette Obermueller and the team showed Christ’s love to the children in Egypt through games, puppet shows and stories … and lots of hugs.
Local Ministry Partner Spotlight:
Harvest Time International BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service
N
orthland partners with a number of organizations throughout Central Florida whose mission is to serve both the local and global community. As a church community, we have served alongside Harvest Time International for many years. Harvest Time International is a nonprofit charitable organization that provides relief to disaster, hunger and refugee victims in Central Florida and around the world. Since 1991, the organization has assisted low-income and financially distressed families by helping them to meet their basic needs. Locally, among other things, Harvest Time operates the Community Hope Center (CHC). The CHC is a self-sufficiency program to support low-income and financially distressed families by supplying food, a variety of household goods and hygiene products. Answer: NAZARETH
Jesus at the Temple Luke 2:41-52
Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. When Jesus was 12 years old and the feast was over, his parents left to go back home. They couldn’t find Jesus anywhere, and they were very worried. They searched and found Him back in the Jerusalem temple courts, talking with the teachers. When they found Jesus, He asked, “Why were you looking for Me? Didn’t you know I had to be in My Father’s house?” They did not understand what Jesus meant by that. Then He went back to Nazareth with them, and He obeyed them. But His mother kept all these things like a secret treasure in her heart. Jesus became wiser, stronger, and more pleasing to God and to people.
Bee-utifully!

Connecting Your Middle School Student
A
ll transitions in life are important, but perhaps none is more important than the transition from elementary school to middle school. At the end of May at Northland at Longwood, all fifth-graders will transition out of the Grade School Ministry. Making a smooth transition to Student Ministries is vital to your preteen. Helping preteens connect to Christ and others requires support on many levels – at home, at school and at church. Northland Student Ministries can be a huge part of your student’s spiritual and relational support system, providing a place where your student can find his or her identity, build relationships and learn alongside others how to live out his or her faith. But taking that step to get involved can be daunting for most students. Here are some tips to connect your middle schooler to Northland’s Student Ministries:
1) Make a commitment with your preteen to come for four to six weeks. 2) Encourage your preteen to bring a friend. This helps make the first visits less intimidating and funner. 3) Communicate with the Student Ministries staff. They will connect with your student and guide him or her in connecting with others. 4) Together, look over a Student Ministries calendar, and identify a range of activities that interest your teen (page 7 of this issue). 5) Sign up for the Middle School fall retreat. This has proved to be one of the most effective relationship-builders for incoming students. 6) If you are the parent of a middle schooler or a current fifth-grader, attend the family picnics being held this summer. On June 5, there is an important preview of the summer program, and on August 14, there will be a preview of the school year program.

h, that Google. A few months ago, Meindert Kramer was searching for sermons online from his home in The Netherlands. Included on his playlist were some of America’s most prominent preachers: John Piper, Tim Keller ... and a certain Florida pastor with a penchant for telling stories. Looking over Meindert’s shoulder Wilbert Kramer was his son, Wilbert, age 21. “It was 8 or 9 months ago that my dad came across our website,” Wilbert remembers (note that he says “our” website, even though he lives more than 4,500 miles away). “I had never experienced anything like Northland’s online worship environment. I was touched by the sermons and felt connected with the people here—always greeting you and willing to chat.” As Wilbert continued to worship with Northland, he built relationships with the online ministers and others in the church’s Web community, which recently hosted more than 5,000 worshipers during Easter weekend. So what is it like being a part of a church without a building? “There is always some sense of disconnection—you don’t exactly meet people in the hallway,” he admits. “On the other hand, I always have a connected feeling when worshiping and hearing the message, because it’s the universal message touching hearts. God’s work isn’t bound to country or language borders.” Speaking of crossing borders ... Wilbert recently accepted an invitation to come to Longwood for an internship with Northland’s media design team. He will spend the next several weeks helping the church to launch a revamped website. Nathan Clark, Northland’s lead online minister and director of digital innovation, notes that as a distributed church, we’ve gone out to others time and again. Now, others are coming here to have an impact on us. “Wilbert provides a critical perspective of someone who has only ever known Northland through online worship and the Web. This is crucial as we continue to build tools not just to help our congregation in Central Florida, but our congregation everywhere,” Clark says. He adds, “A lot of traditional missions is ‘us’ going to ‘them.’ Conversely, the distributed church recognizes that there is no ‘us’ and ‘them.’ That’s what Wilbert is such a good reminder of. He’s not just connected to Northland, he’s a part of Northland. He is Northland!” Having only worshiped online, Wilbert says setting foot inside Northland’s facilities for the first time was a surreal experience: “I was a little sleepy ... jetlagged after a 17-hour flight. But it was amazing. The fact that I actually shook hands with another congregant was an ‘awakening’ of sorts.” Currently a student at Christian University of Applied Sciences in Ede, Holland—studying communications, PR and marketing—Wilbert has already started his own company with three of his friends. He hopes to continue building that business after graduation. Meantime, he hopes to offer some fresh, inspiring and different ideas about Internet communications to Northland. He says that he’s enjoying his time here, although he admits some things take some getting used to. “I’ve actually had an easy time adjusting to American culture, apart from the fact you eat out a lot. In Holland, we do that every month. You do that everyday ... twice!”

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ Raising Teenagers That Connect with God and Others Scripture focus:
Luke 2:41-43, 49-52 (NASB)
Worship focus:
....................................................................................................................................................
........................................................................
Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when He became twelve, they went up there according to the custom of the Feast; and as they were returning, after spending the full number of days, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. But His parents were unaware of it, and He said to them, “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” But they did not understand the statement which He had made to them. And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Worship God today for His sovereignty. He is in control of all the seasons of our lives.
NOTES:
summary prayer: ........................................................................
Father, thank You that You are the Author of seasons. You, who are the same yesterday, today and forever, walk with us through all the changes in our lives. You are in control of all the changes in the world. We don’t need to fear. All the changes we face are bringing us to You.
