inner on Tuesdays is a great time at our house. About nine months ago, my wife and I began talking about inviting some college-aged students to come share a meal with our family, and so we began talking about what this might look like. Over the years, we have had many people to our home, and back when we were first married, around 25 couples would come over on Friday nights and stay until 2 a.m. Those were the days before kids. Now our children participate with our Tuesday dinner, and I can’t imagine life without our family group. There are a total of eight of us, 10 including our daughter Emerson and son Wyatt. There is very little agenda on Tuesdays, and often it is centered on sharing a meal, some prayer and a lot of storytelling. Emerson invites someone
each week to read a book with her, pray together and tuck her into bed. This is a highlight of her week, and I suspect it’s become a highlight for those who come on Tuesday nights, too. Our group is traveling together this summer to South Africa to serve in a township called Khayelitsha. I’m so grateful that my kids are growing up around people who love Jesus, love Kingdom work and love growing together. Pastor Joel’s preaching on family has me thinking a lot about the incredible people God has placed in the lives of our family members. If you’ve never considered having a dinner group that shares life, stories of Jesus, family time and serving together, you should consider starting one this summer. Invite some people you know, pick a date to start, and fire up the grill. I bet your family will change a lot like mine did.
True Joy — I Am His, and He Is Mine A Sermon from Your Site Minister BILL CHAPMAN
Scripture focus:
Luke 10:1-22 (NIV)
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. 8 9
“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’
“He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
16
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
17
He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 18
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
21
“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

s Pastor Joel completes his series on the family, I want to remind us all how incredible our children are. From the early years of developing them into the young men and women God has created them to be, to seeing them grow through their teen years, parents have an incredible responsibility during those time periods of a child’s life. So for all of you who have given lives so your children can grow up in the ways of the Lord, I am so grateful. Children also play an important role in our society, and as parents and teachers leading them, we have the opportunity to build in them a heart for what is right and what is true. So as we celebrate these kids’ growth and maturity, take some time and listen to what kids are saying. I have heard from parents about their kids leading prayer times at home, praying for meals in public, wanting to read their Bibles daily and asking questions that emphasize their heart for God. Keep pursuing God on your own as you continue to love and raise your children. These faces of kids tell a beautiful picture of who they are becoming as followers of Christ! Thank you for being the model for each of your kids as they pursue Jesus as their Savior! It is truly a privilege to walk alongside each of you as you follow Christ. >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

To date, a total of 110 Northlanders have gone through CERT training. Chief Wales was asked to join the latest team to Haiti as the CERT instructor for Haitian interpreters (French and Creole are the country’s official languages). Once the interpreters have been trained, they will train others in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season and other emergencies. Kerr explains, “One segment of the training is on the correct use of fire extinguishers. This will be adapted to using a bucket brigade since fire extinguishers are not always available in Haiti. It causes us to pause and understand how blessed we are here in the United States to have the resources that we have at our fingertips,” Kerr says. Still, she adds, conditions in Haiti have improved since the earthquake. Many children have been helped during the church’s four trips to Haiti.

his weekend we would like to send a special thank you to all of our volunteers. There are literally hundreds of you volunteering every week here at Northland and throughout the community. Just a few of the ways you serve are by greeting our guests, serving Communion, answering phone calls, participating in local serve projects and teaching our children. You are an essential part in our mission to call others to know and follow Christ. I cannot thank you enough for your servant’s hearts and for all that you do! Thank you for being the church everywhere, every day!

We worship Jesus, who humbled Himself as a servant. He obeyed His Father and gave His life for us. His Spirit helps each of us serve God with our whole heart.

Answer: WELL DONE
The Story of Three Servants Matthew 25:14-30
Jesus told this story to show us what the kingdom of Heaven will be like. He said, “A man going on a journey gave each servant the amount of money he knew the servant could take care of. He trusted them to make more money for him. He gave five coins to the first servant, two coins to the second servant and one to the third. The first two servants used their coins to make more for the master. The third servant buried the money to keep it safe. When the master returned, he threw out the servant who earned nothing. To the first two servants, he said, ‘Well done, good and faithful servants! You’ve been faithful with a few things; I’ll put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’”
Thanks.

Helping Our Children Grow
H
ow do children grow spiritually? One simple paradigm for viewing spiritual development is this:
Elementary > > > > > > I should/I ought Middle School > > > > > I choose/ I want High School > > > > > > I am becoming Northland Children’s Ministries curriculum teaches: Who God is and what He has done. Northland Children’s Ministries curriculum focuses on forming a foundational knowledge of the Bible. Any child who has participated regularly in Children’s Church from kindergarten through grade five has explored the basic doctrines of the faith and has heard every story in the Bible twice, from cover to cover.
Northland middle school curriculum teaches: Who am I to God? Northland’s middle school curriculum focuses on forming the habit of daily time with God. Middle school students at Northland experience being in large and small groups with their peers, and discuss what the Bible has to say that relates to them in their everyday lives. Rudy Tamez, middle school minister for Northland at Longwood, says: “Community is
vital to middle school students because they look to their friends when making their decisions. Peer pressure plays such a big part in students’ lives that it is crucial that they have friends who bring them closer to Jesus. In Northland’s Student Ministries, we work to build a community that will foster godly character and service. We attempt to meet their need for relationship by connecting them to others who know and love Jesus – other adults, high school leaders and their own parents.”
Northland high school programming teaches: How to be a servant-leader. Northland high school curriculum focuses on giving students the tools they need to serve others. High schoolers at Northland have the opportunity to serve alongside one another and learn what it means to become a lifelong servant-leader. “High school can be a very difficult time in life to navigate,” says high school Minister Brian Katauskas. “It is important to have a group of peers that are united in their morals and their passion for God, so that students can come together and help each other live out a Christ-centered life. As believers, we are called to serve one another and to help those who are in need. It is much easier to serve in this way when you have a friend serving alongside you. Serving as a community is not only more productive, but it is also a great way to build relationships.”
Children receive materials and instruction that extend worship and spiritual training to sharing time with parents at home.
Common Characteristics of Developing Teens Middle grade students… 1. Have chemical and hormonal imbalances, which often trigger emotions that are frightening and poorly understood. These students may regress to more childish behavior. 2. Are moody and restless, and often feel self-conscious and alienated. They lack self¬-esteem and are introspective. 3. Are searching for identity and acceptance even in the midst of intense peer group relationships. 4. Are searching to form a conscious sense of individual uniqueness. 5. Experience often traumatic conflicts due to conflicting loyalties to peer groups and family. 6. Refer to peers as sources for standards and models of behavior. Media heroes and heroines are also singularly important in shaping both behavior and fashion. 7. May be rebellious toward parents, but are still strongly dependent on parental values. 8. Want to make their own choices, but the authority of the family is a critical factor in ultimate decisions. 9. Are fiercely loyal to peer group values, and sometimes cruel or insensitive to those outside the peer group. 10. Want to know and feel that significant adults, including parents
and teachers, love and accept them. These students need frequent affirmation. 11. Challenge authority figures and test limits of acceptable behavior. 12. Confront hard moral and ethical questions with which they are unprepared to cope.
High school students 1. Get self-esteem from success in sports, school and friendships. 2. Tend to compare themselves with others, and they might form false ideas about their body image. 3. Are influenced by culture: TV, magazines and the Internet. 4. Can get poor body image from the things mentioned above. 5. Need to have good support from their parents. 6. Begin to understand abstract ideas, such as morality. 7. Begin to understand other people better. 8. Ask, “Who can I become?” and, “How will I fit in?” 9. Experience a wide fluctuation of emotions from day to day. 10. Need lots of rest for their rapidly growing bodies.
PROMOTION WEEKEND June 12-14
S
ummer is almost here, and the weekend of June 12 to 14 is big at Northland. It is Promotion Weekend. Children participating in Northland activities, from the nursery to the High School Ministry, will be promoted to the next grade or age level. Fifth-grade students who are graduating will begin to attend corporate worship with their families, rather than attending Children’s Church. Some children are thrilled with this transition; others are anxious. Remind your child that God calls us to come together and worship Him. Worshiping with all ages creates an environment that fellowship with peers alone cannot provide. Your child now has more Bible knowledge than many adults in the service and will be challenged to apply this knowledge in new ways. He or she has so much to contribute as we worship God together. In order to facilitate the promotion of fifth-graders, there will be an induction ceremony Saturday, June 12 at 6:45 p.m. Dr. Joel C. Hunter and Pastor Vernon Rainwater will participate to acknowledge your child’s achievement. A representative from Student Ministries will lead the children in reciting the Apostles’ Creed. At the ceremony, the children will receive a special Bible and other gifts to mark this important moment in their faith walk. Encourage your child to wear his or her “Sunday best” for this special event. Be sure to invite family and friends to the Induction Ceremony! Bring your camera, and be on time; the induction begins at 6:45 p.m. Please consider bringing your child to the worship service at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 12. All fifth-graders will worship together in a reserved section of the Longwood sanctuary with their Children’s and Student Ministries leaders. We hope each child will be able to participate. The registration deadline for the induction ceremony is Monday, June 7. To register your child for this ceremony, contact Julie Meeker (407-949-7153 or julie.meeker@ northlandchurch.net).

Chief, cont. She explains, “The day prior to our departure, I received word that someone had donated three cases of children’s vitamins and supplements designed for children. It was truly an answer to prayer!” But that wasn’t the end of the story. The team took the vitamins and other supplies to a small orphanage in the mountains of Haiti, only to discover upon arrival that they had more people waiting for assistance than supplies on hand. Again, they prayed. The results? “We literally asked Jesus to ‘bless’ the vitamins and the supplies like He did with the loaves and fish. We formed two lines and started giving away what we had. At the end of the day, each and every child had received help. It was such a blessing and a very heart-filled moment for our entire team.” Kerr says one of the most difficult aspects of working in Haiti has been the sense of not having done enough. “Our teams spend quite a bit of time talking through this very subject and discussing how we see God in all we do. How do you determine the value of a drink of water for a dying patient, or holding the hands of a young child and her mother when we know that the child cannot be helped, or serving a meal to an orphanage full of children that might have starved to death otherwise?” She adds, “We can’t help each and every person of Haiti, but we can help a few — and to those few we are able to help, it has meant the world.” It has also meant the world to Northlanders who have traveled to Haiti on Distributed Journeys. In the days leading up to his trip, Rich Wales prayed that God would accomplish much not just through him, but in him. “My hope is that God will help me develop a deeper compassion for those in need and the willingness to take action. To be a better role model so my wife and children can see that He can touch all of us in a way that we can give Him the glory.” He concludes, “I would like to show the people of Haiti that worldwide, Christian compassion and support will always be available to them, especially in their darkest times.” To learn more about upcoming Distributed Journeys to Haiti and other countries, please visit www.somedayistoday.net.

Preaching the message this weekend:
Dr. Steve Brown, President of Key Life Network
Our preacher at Longwood this weekend is Dr. Steve Brown, president of Key Life Network, a Christian radio network. Key Life’s 15-minute daily radio broadcast, as well as the one-minute “Think Spots,” are heard throughout the United States, Canada and internationally, featuring the Bible teaching of Dr. Brown. In addition to the radio programs, Key Life also offers cassette tapes, CDs and publications that teach and help listeners grow in the knowledge of God, producing life-changing results. “What makes this program unique,” according to its website (www.keylife.org), “is Steve’s humor, illustrations and practical application of Scripture, all with the focus on our freedom in Christ.” Dr. Brown also is a seminary professor and author. He previously served as a pastor for more than 25 years and now devotes much of his time to the radio broadcast. Dr. Brown has a variety of experiences and a unique perspective on life, but refuses to be a “guru.” He gives, in his teaching, the freedom to think. Overall, Steve has become known for his refreshing and practical biblical applications. Currently, Dr. Brown is serving as a professor of preaching at Reformed Theological Seminary in Oviedo. He sits on the board of the National Religious Broadcasters and Harvest USA and is the author of several books, including Born Free, When Being Good Isn’t Good Enough and When Your Rope Breaks. His articles appear in such magazines and journals as Leadership, Decision, Plain Truth and Today’s Christian Woman. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. BROWN, VISIT WWW.KEYLIFE.ORG.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Poker, Peace and Piety Scripture focus:
Matthew 25:14-30 (ESV)
Worship focus:
....................................................................................................................................................
........................................................................
“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, and ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”
Worship God today as the Author of joy. He delights in His children, and He is most delighted with us when we are most satisfied in Him. (John Piper, Desiring God)
summary prayer: ........................................................................
We praise You, Father, for lifting us out of the depths. We called to you for help and you saved us. You brought us up from death to life. We sing to You and praise Your name. For Your anger lasts only a moment, but Your favor lasts forever; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. You have turned our mourning into dancing; You have removed our sackcloth and clothed us with joy, that our hearts may sing to You and not be silent. O Lord our God, we will give you thanks forever! (Adapted from Psalm 30)
