O
ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.
Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sunday nights) • E-mail (Receive a weekly update. Sign up by e-mailing sean.cooper@northlandchurch.net.)
I think his eyes are bigger than his stomach.
UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: May 30 — Memorial Day Weekend Pray for Our Troops
After the worship service, come to the Welcome Center (located behind the main welcome booth in the foyer) and pray for those serving in the military overseas. We will break into groups of three or four people and spend a few minutes praying for a number of families serving our country.
JUNE 6 — Potluck Dinner
It’s that time! Pull out your favorite recipes, or hit up some takeout, and bring your appetite! We had so much fun at our first potluck, we want to make this a regular gathering. This dinner takes place before the worship service in The Rink and begins at 5 p.m. Stop by the Info Kiosks to sign up to help us know who is bringing what dishes. This is a great way to sit around a table, share a meal and meet some new people. If you have questions, e-mail Sarah (sarah.mattingly@ northlandchurch.net).
What a great time to socialize with fellow Christians.

Stories From the Field: God’s Work Through Ordinary People John and Brenda McBride reach out on their night out BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister
work. He used his connections in the automotive industry to help A.J. get an interview, and he got the job! The only problem was A.J. didn’t have the tools necessary to do the job. Some months earlier, his home had been broken into, and his tools were stolen. Then God did another amazing thing. A.J.’s father just happened to reach out to him, even though they had not been orthlanders at Mount Dora are ministering on very good terms. When he learned that his son had secured a in our community in amazing ways. Over job but didn’t have the required tools, he took him to Sears and the next few Sundays, I want to share just purchased $1,000 worth of tools for him! A.J. was blown away a few stories with you about the work of the Holy by the goodness of God. Within about six weeks’ time, A.J. Spirit through ordinary believers like us. found Christ, found a church family, found employment, and John and Brenda McBride are committed to Jesus found a stronger relationship with his daughter and father – all and to their church because the Holy Spirit sent the family at Northland at McBrides out to eat that night. “Well done, good and faithful servant! Mount Dora. One evening This story becomes even they went out for a bite more powerful when you You have been faithful with a few to eat at their favorite consider John and Brenda’s things; I will put you in charge of establishment. She has a rare form of John and Brenda opened the disease, and doctors have their hearts to hear his story. As A.J. poured out his had difficulty identifying it. Last year she completed rounds struggles, they listened with care and concern. Later of chemotherapy and radiation, and the Lord eliminated that they exchanged phone numbers with him and invited earlier tumor. Now they face the same trial again. Though in him to church. A few days later, they followed up many ways their world is turning upside down, they are pressing their invitation and picked A.J. up and brought him on and serving the Lord in any way they can. They reached out to a Northland worship service! While he was with us, to A.J. despite their own struggles. A.J. received God’s love through the worship service Their ministry in the lives of A.J. and Ashley reminds me of and through several caring Northland congregants. Paul and his thorn. In 2 Corinthians 12:7, Paul writes, “There The next week the McBrides reached out to A.J. was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to and invited him and his young daughter, Ashley, torment me” (NIV). The Spirit of Jesus had used Paul to bring over to their home. They brought A.J. and Ashley thousands of unbelievers to faith in Christ and in the process to church again. In the course of their relationship, to birth many churches in the Roman Empire. Yet the Lord John learned that A.J. was a mechanic and out of permitted Paul to be afflicted by a “thorn.” We don’t know

exactly what his thorn was; we only know that it hurt. “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me,” wrote Paul (v. 8). But the Holy Spirit responded to Paul, saying, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (v. 9a). Paul’s conclusion: “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9b-10, NIV). John and Brenda have not allowed the thorn of cancer to destroy their witness. Are they scared? Yes. Are they hardpressed? Yes. Are they weak? Yes. Are they backing down from serving Jesus? No way. They know that in their very weakness, Christ is strong and powerful. They know that God will deliver them through their trial and that He will use them for the deliverance of others. A few Sundays ago, we gathered around Brenda to pray for her. And guess who was with us? A.J. How fitting for this young man to pray for the healing of the one who reached out to him in his hour of need! Indeed, this is a story from the field! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Form Follows Function, Right? JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
A
few weeks back, Pastor Joel shared a story with us about this ongoing discussion in the world of architecture: Does form have to follow function, or can function be defined by form? In the illustration, a cab driver spoke about a postmodern art museum that had staircases that went nowhere, columns that held nothing up and doors that opened to nowhere. But the cab driver explained, the foundation must be solid for the building to exist at all. This struck me deeply, as we have been wrestling with necessary and immediate staff transitions here at Northland at Oviedo. We were all surprised and blessed by the arrival of Charlotte Grace to the Smith family and knew that we needed to have a quick exit strategy for Michelle, our Children’s Ministries coordinator, who has always said that when God blessed them with a child, she would want to be home with him or her full time. But do we want to just “fill” that position, or is God calling us to do something else? When Amanda Hartley, our site coordinator, was quickly called to Tampa with her family, we were not sure what would happen. But quickly, God brought Rebecca Sheahan and her husband into our congregation through a small group, and she has not missed a beat. But what if God wanted to do something else? We have had the structure of our staff around making the event of Sunday worship happen each week. This is because that is a huge part of a church. But is it the essential function of the church? Has our form been shaped by our function, or have we slipped into a function of our form? When we launched our site, one of our measuring
questions was, “If we disappear, will the community notice?” If our worship gathering at Hagerty High School disappears, I am not sure anyone will notice except those who come. But if the people who worship God there – the people who serve in our community, the people who are seeking to know Christ and make Him known by loving Him and loving others – disappear, I think the community will notice. We gather on Sundays to worship God for who He is and what He has done, and then we (the leadership and staff) are given the job (function) of engaging each and every one of you in response to that call. This is called the Christian life – living out what has been accomplished within by Christ. Throughout our faith history, that has looked many different ways, but transformed lives and surroundings were always results. What if that function redefined our form? I think that is exactly what God has done right here, right now. He has created the perfect time for us to evolve, to realign our form around this function of seeing people come to Christ and grow in Him by knowing and following Him! Instead of putting people in spots that only have the time and space to make the events of Sundays happen, He has allowed us to place people in positions that will focus on you and your faith in Christ, seven days a week, so we can further be transformed by Him and thus continue to transform our community and the world, ensuring they would notice if we were to disappear! Rebecca Sheahan, our new media/communications coordinator, is focused on developing a team or volunteers in photo/video to help capture the story of Northland at Oviedo from events and groups to service and testimonies. She also will continue to blow us away with her media advertising (fliers, ads/slides, e-mails and Facebook, as well as the new website. Cyndi Lott, our new Christian life coordinator, is working with each ministry leader on how to best engage all congregants in the Christian life through fellowship, prayer, groups, events, service to one another, outreach to our community and so on. She will work with and develop our Sunday volunteers as an essential part of that response to the call for all of us, so hurry up and get plugged in now! Patty Sattler will replace Michelle Smith as the Children’s Ministries coordinator, with oversight for all of the ministry, focusing on volunteer development and care as well as family

T
his is the one weekend out of the year that we as Americans commemorate all Americans who have died in the U.S. military. We understand how much they gave so that we could have the freedoms we have today. So for every person who gave his or her life for me, I say thank you! I also thank your families, who lost someone they loved for the sake of our freedom. For this we are forever grateful. In addition to these heroes who literally gave their lives for each one of us, I also want to acknowledge those people who give of themselves continually so that we can be free to worship God on a weekly basis. I also understand the time it takes, the effort it takes, the selflessness it takes, and the heart it takes to serve and care for all of us in the West Oaks body. There are many ways of serving at the West Oaks site, so I thought it would be appropriate to thank all of you who have served faithfully over the past year. As you see these people after the service or over the next few weeks, please give them a hug and say thanks for serving and giving themselves away to our body. This camp ministry goes to orphanages and sets up a Christian camp program that includes Bible lessons, crafts, games, sports, skits, worship and a whole lot of fun. orthland partners with a number of local organizations that work to meet the needs of the local community. This week we would like to highlight The Sharing Center in Longwood. The Sharing Center works to prevent homelessness in Seminole County by assisting low-income families with meeting needs during financial emergencies caused by job loss and health problems. Assistance for families is given according to individual need, The Sharing Center resources and the network of working relationships with other local organizations. Help may include food, toiletries, clothing, financial aid for rent or a mortgage, utilities, transportation costs, medical prescriptions and other help specific to an individual in order to assist in meeting physical as well as spiritual needs. To help meet these needs, many volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis, including receptionists, data entry workers, thrift store attendants, furniture movers, hair stylists and electricians. If you are interested in serving on a one-time, monthly or weekly basis, contact The Sharing Center (407-260-9155, ext. 14). For more information, visit its website (www.thesharingcenter.org). On June 12, Northland will be sending a team of about 35 people to assist with landscaping and cleanup around The Sharing Center facility. We need you! To learn more about the project and to sign up, visit the Northland serve website (www.northlandchurch.net/serve/local/). Hope to see you all there!

Jesus’ first miracle John 2:1-11
Jesus, His disciples and His mother went to a wedding in Cana. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.” Jesus said, “Dear woman, why do you bring me into this? My time has not yet come.” His mother told the servants, “Do what He tells you.” Six stone water jars stood nearby. Each jar could hold 20 to 30 gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” Then the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. This was the first of His miraculous signs. The disciples saw this and put their faith in Him.
Ohhh.
Draw the six large stone jars. Each jar held enough water to fill 20 large milk jugs!

G
oing on a road trip? Making friends with orphans on a Distributed Journey? Digging your toes into the sand at New Smyrna Beach? Summer’s almost here! It’s the time for many of us to get away, out of the ordinary routine. Wherever you go, even if it’s your own backyard to sip coffee and listen to the birds, Pastor Joel’s devotional book Inner State 80 is the perfect take-along to keep you engaged on your spiritual journey, too. And hot off the press is its companion, the Inner State 80 “travel log,” a tool to track where you’ve been each day and where you’ve seen God. The travel log corresponds with the daily devotions you’ll enjoy in the book, and at the end of each chapter, there’s a bonus page in the travel log to help you stop and reflect on the big picture of what God is doing in your life. Pick up a copy of the Inner State 80 travel log in the Northland Bookstore for only $3, or receive a free copy of the travel log for each Inner State 80 book you buy. The book costs $12, $20 for two copies or $25 for three copies. Join the rest of the Northland family and start reading right away. We’ll come to the end of this special spiritual journey, having traveled together while apart, making some memories, writing them down and, in the process, discovering what God has been doing along the way. Enjoy your journey!

Conference for Married Couples Get Away and Be Together
L
ife has a way of taking a toll on relationships, maybe especially marriages. Couples start out fully focused on each other. But as the years go by, the time for relaxing together and enjoying one another gives way to responsibilities and busy schedules. Before you know it, checking e-mail on Saturday is more important than date night. Family Life’s Weekend to Remember conference provides a chance for you to get away from the distractions of daily life and reconnect with your spouse. Cell phones are shut off. To-do lists are temporarily forgotten. It’s a time to slow down and reconnect. Each conference provides a warm, engaging atmosphere and a focus on making progress rather than placing blame. The insightful speakers teach how to work through differences, improve communication and rekindle romance. The June conferences are scheduled for: • June 4-6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . St. Augustine, Renaissance Resort World Golf Village • June 18-20 . . . . . . . . . . . . . Orlando, Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress • June 25-27 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ Post-Parenting Scripture focus:
John 2:1-5 (NASB)
Worship focus:
...............................................................................................................................................
........................................................................
“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
Worship God today for His sovereignty. He is in control of all the seasons of our lives.
summary prayer: ....................................................................
Father, thank You that You are the Author of seasons. You, who are the same yesterday, today and forever, walk with us through all the changes in our lives. You are in control of all the changes in the world and the changes in our lives. We don’t need to fear. All the seasons we experience are bringing us to You.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Happy Together | Becoming Adults That Connect with God and Others | Ecclesiastes 3:9-12
