Connect With God and Others

he last few weeks, we have been moving through this sermon series and focusing in on the connection among God, others and us. We honed in on children, then teens, and this week we focus on adults who connect with God and others. Why is this connecting with God and others so important? I think Matthew 22:34-40 (NASB) tells us clearly the answer:

The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” Jesus basically says, “Love God, and love each other; all of it hangs on this!” To love something or someone, there has to be a relationship, a connection of some kind. It has to cost something. It takes time and investment. It takes a connection. The Pharisees and the Sadducees knew these words very well; they were not new. The Lord recently added a new facet to Northland’s relationship with The Carpenter’s House. Sharon Simmons, a tennis coach at a local Christian school who began attending Northland at Mount Dora several months ago, desired to teach her team to serve the Lord as well as to play the sport. When

ore than 30 years ago, God inspired Pat and Linda Manfredi to begin taking orphans into their home. Today, this family has raised more than 140 kids to adulthood. They currently have 16 children in their home. Their ministry, The Carpenter’s House for Children, has become near and dear to Northlanders in Lake County. The Mount Dora congregants have thrown many birthday parties for the kids; participated in numerous Helping Hands serving days for them; mowed their lawn scores of times; helped with cooking, laundry and computers; and donated food, clothing and money to them.

Serve Others Through Alpha BY GUS DAVIES Pastor

e invite you to participate in the upcoming Alpha small group leader training to explore ways you can use your gifts, talents and passion for evangelism and discipleship to serve, guide and lead others who are investigating Christianity or are new to the Christian faith. The training is set for Sundays, June 6, 13 and 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Northland at Longwood’s Student Ministries and Care Center, room 1111. Child care will be provided. As you may remember, last October Northland hosted Alpha’s National Conference, at which Bear Grylls shared how Alpha influenced his life. This invitation to you to serve on our Alpha team is an intentional next step to building a strong foundation of leaders who will carry out Northland’s vision and mission and, of course, the Great Commission we have as believers. Responding to Christ for the benefit of others

Engage in a conversation with God. BY SEAN COOPER Minister of Service and Equipping

s a church staff, we are always grappling with what it means to be the church. As His people, what are those things that most clearly reflect Christ to the world? As His pure and spotless bride, what are the responses that indicate our devotion to Christ? Reading the Old Testament has opened my eyes to being the church. Spending time in the Pentateuch has made me realize that the church is simply the people of God watching and responding to their Creator. So much of the stories in the Old Testament, especially the poets’ and prophets’, are about these two actions. God loves extravagantly and faithfully, and we can witness this every day. By seeing God in action, the church is motivated to action. By seeing God love, the church is motivated to love. So for me, being the church is watching an amazing Creator and responding in similar ways. Knowing the character of God shapes our own character, so it’s important that we look at the ways God’s people have watched and responded to God throughout history. In the Scriptures, we can see patterns of how the children of God loved others the same way our Creator showed love. Part of the reason I love the Scriptures and love learning from other cultures today is so that I can participate in an eternal, transcultural response to who God is and what He has done. In other words, though we are free to respond to God in many

t Northland, we believe that Christ ordained certain holy rituals for the church to observe, through which His Spirit uniquely acts. These holy rituals are symbolic of spiritual events. They are baptism and the Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion or the holy Eucharist. Baptism is a public sacrament that requires a one-time observance. It is an outward sign, a public statement of belonging to Christ. Baptism is not for the purpose of forgiveness. Rather, it symbolizes repentance, which is necessary for forgiveness. As it is the Holy Spirit who baptizes each believer into the body of Christ, we extend liberty of conscience in the mode of water baptism. Some in our congregation prefer immersion, which symbolizes the believer’s death, burial and resurrection with Christ. Others in our fellowship prefer pouring or sprinkling, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s work of uniting us to Christ, cleansing us from sin and regenerating us. creative ways, there are a number of ways that are similar in all places and times. A lot of guesswork is eliminated from the Christian life when we look at the ways that people around the world and throughout history have worshiped God and reflected His love. We serve a God of grace. Salvation is a work that only Christ could accomplish. There is nothing we can add or take away, and this very act of God is the catalyst for why we want to respond to Him. God is the master initiator, and we are given this incredible life to witness His amazing work in action in the world. We cannot earn our salvation, nor can we emulate God’s work, yet we are placed in this exact time and space to show others what God has shown us. For me personally, there are basic responses to God that I realize are key to my growth as a believer. These are by no means a way to increase my spirituality, nor do these actions earn any credit toward my salvation. The more I know God’s character, the more I realize how sinful I am. Responding in these seven ways is not for the purpose of making us feel better about ourselves; rather, we can respond in these ways as a result of being amazed at the God we serve. You will begin to see the responses listed below often. They are going to be used by Northland’s leadership as a sort of template to provide clear pathways to spiritual maturity as we continue to learn together what it means to “be the church.”

Third Millennium Ministries

hird Millennium Ministries is quickly becoming a key partner for Northland. Like Northland, its goal is to give away its resources to anyone who wants them. Janie Pillow envisioned Third Millennium when she realized that Christian leaders around the world need to be trained in their own countries. With the help of Dr. Richard Pratt and a number of others who share her vision, Third Millennium was launched in 1997 to create multimedia curriculum for the world for free. Most pastors in other countries have little or no theological education, and no way to obtain one. Third Millennium Ministries is working to meet this need by creating and distributing a high-quality multimedia seminary curriculum in the major languages of underprivileged nations: English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin) and Russian. Today Third Millennium has a team of more than 20 full-time employees and more than 16 translators from around the world. Located in Longwood, they focus on the five languages above, which cover 42 percent of the world’s population. Third Millennium’s materials also are translated into other languages, including Farsi (Iran), Turkish, French, Mongolian, several African Arabic dialects, Amharic (Ethiopia), Hindi and several other languages of India. Worship in the Arts Camp Available at Northland

he Worship in the Arts Camp will create an encouraging environment for one week of instruction in the disciplines of song, dance, visual art and spiritual growth. At the camp, to be held July 12 to 16 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for kids in third through eighth grades, instruction and mentoring will be provided by mature artists working alongside young adult artists, including worship interns. In keeping with the mission of equipping young artists for a lifetime of worship, the week will culminate in an evening of celebration and service for families in our community. The evening will begin with a young artist musical using Scripture, visual art, dance and song to express the story of who God is and what He has done. After the program, the performers, their families and the Northland community will gather in the foyer to pack meals for the children of Haiti, in conjunction with Kids Against Hunger. Goals of the camp include developing each child’s talent, engaging children in reflecting upon their own part in God’s story, and encouraging the children to express their stories more effectively and authentically. The evening will provide an opportunity for us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind, and our neighbor as ourselves. The registration fee for participants is $90 and $45 for each additional child in the family. You also can purchase tickets for the Friday night event, “The Story,” at the time of registration. The tickets are $10 per person, and proceeds go directly to Change This World Inc. in support of the Kids Against Hunger service project. Sharon shared that she and all of her players had their hearts filled by God through their service to the Manfredi family. “This experience was wonderful, but you should know that these girls don’t have any intention of letting it rest there,” the mom of one of the tennis players said. The girls have collected clothing, shoes, videos and games for the children. “As a mother, I am so blessed to have children with hearts for others.” Great job, girls! As you continue to reach out to the Manfredi family, God will continue to fill your hearts up with joy. Jesus spoke of Himself, saying, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45, NIV). As Christians, our role in this world is to be ambassadors for Jesus, and these ambassadorial doors open up as we step out and commit to serve other people. How can you step out and serve Jesus? Judaism that Jesus was describing all about love. It came from the Law, of which they were so knowledgeable. The first part came from Deuteronomy 6:5, in which God is giving the Israelites the lowdown on how to follow Him, some of the most sacred instructions in all of the Old Testament and some of my personal favorite Old Testament verses. In fact, do me a favor; go read all of Deuteronomy 6. It is amazing, I promise – not to mention, it too looks to address the connections necessary between God and man, and man and one another. The second verse comes from a different text in the Old Testament, Leviticus 19:18, which is in the midst of the “sundry” laws, called such because they are a bit of a hodgepodge of do’s and don’ts given by the Lord to Moses. In the middle of this listing, the Lord simply states, “You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (NASB), and then, not in Jesus’ statement, maybe because He knew they at least knew this, the Lord reminds Moses of the why behind it all: “I am the Lord.” Just in case the Israelites missed it, he reminds them at the end of this section of teaching to Moses, in verse 37, “You shall thus observe all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them; I am the LORD” (NASB). See, these verses are so important to correctly understand the power of connection, the power of love. The gospel call is to follow and glorify Him, so we have to be connected to Him and to one another in love. First John 4:8 tells us that God is love, so connection to Him is essential! In fact, He tells His disciples that we will be marked as His by the love we have for one another (John 13:35). He says if we say we love Him, we will obey Him (John 14:15). If we are called to love Him and one another, we must be connected to Him and to one another! We connect to Him in many different ways, but some important ways are through the study of His Word, prayer, fellowship, service, worship and giving! If you are not experiencing this in your own life, or you know in your heart and spirit that there is more of it out there for you, I am here to say there is, there always is. Be a part of it with us. Get connected to a Neighborhood Gathering or small group. Come to the Wednesday night prayer gatherings. Serve on Sundays in Children’s Ministries, with the setup/takedown team or as a greeter. There are many ways to be involved and only one way not to be – by your choosing not to be. ACCESS MINISTRIES While meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities has always been important to our church, we are working on expanding the programs and services offered. LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you. SPECIAL NEEDS SEATING: People with wheelchairs, walkers or other special needs have designated seating areas throughout the sanctuary if needed. LYRICS FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED: Printed lyrics are located at the Welcome Center. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Classes for children through fifth grade with special needs is on Sundays at 11 a.m. BUDDY BREAKS: With Nathaniel’s Hope, we offer respite for parents of kids with special needs. ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE WITH HEARING LOSS: Signed worship service is Sundays, 9 a.m. Sound amplification aids are available at the Welcome Center.
