Welcome to Northland on Sunday Nights! SEAN COOPER Northland on Sunday Nights Site Minister

O

ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sundaynights) • E-mail (Receive a weekly update. Sign up by e-mailing sean. cooper@northlandchurch.net.)

UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES:

Needed: Hygiene Kit Items! We are collecting the items listed below on Sunday nights. Can you help? Let’s join forces and bring these items over the next three Sundays. Just drop them off in our collection boxes in the foyer. On June 27, we will have a special assembling project after the worship service, where everyone can join together to put these kits together. Our goal is to make 1,000 hygiene kits! Donate as little or as much as you are able. Items needed: • Socks • Disposable razors • Deodorant • Toothpaste • Toothbrushes • Soap • Small plastic combs or brushes • Travel-sized bottles of hand sanitizer

Connect With God and Others

he last few weeks, we have been moving through this sermon series and focusing in on the connection among God, others and us. We honed in on children, then teens, and this week we focus on adults who connect with God and others. Why is this connecting with God and others so important? I think Matthew 22:34-40 (NASB) tells us clearly the answer:

Stop by the Welcome Center (located behind the main welcome booth in the foyer) to meet the Student Ministries summer interns. Northland’s high school minister, Brian Katauskas, will host this informal time of refreshments and introduce you to three college interns serving over the summer. Come make them feel welcome!

commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” Jesus basically says, “Love God, and love each other; all of it hangs on this!” To love something or someone, there has to be a relationship, a connection of some kind. It has to cost something. It takes time and investment. It takes a connection. The Pharisees and the Sadducees knew these words very well; they were not new. This was not some newfangled hippie(Continued on page 14.)

ore than 30 years ago, God inspired Pat and Linda Manfredi to begin taking orphans into their home. Today, this family has raised more than 140 kids to adulthood. They currently have 16 children in their home. Their ministry, The Carpenter’s House for Children, has become near and dear to Northlanders in Lake County. The Mount Dora congregants have thrown many birthday parties for the kids; participated in numerous Helping Hands serving days for them; mowed their lawn scores of times; helped with cooking, laundry and computers; and donated food, clothing and money to them.

she heard about The Carpenter’s House for Children, she began arranging a serving and fellowship day for the tennis players and The Carpenter’s House kids. Serve Others Through Alpha BY GUS DAVIES Pastor

W

e invite you to participate in the upcoming Alpha small group leader training to explore ways you can use your gifts, talents and passion for evangelism and discipleship to serve, guide and lead others who are investigating Christianity or are new to the Christian faith. The training is set for Sundays, June 6, 13 and 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Northland at Longwood’s Student Ministries and Care Center, room 1111. Child care will be provided. As you may remember, last October Northland hosted Alpha’s National Conference, at which Bear Grylls shared how Alpha influenced his life. This invitation to you to serve on our Alpha team is an intentional next step to building a strong foundation of leaders who will carry out Northland’s vision and mission and, of course, the Great Commission we have as believers. To become more familiar with Alpha, visit www. alphausa.org.

For these three weeks in June, we will discover how together we can: • Help nonbelievers explore Christianity. • Help new believers be grounded in their faith. • Reignite and refresh believers’ passion and faith. • Guide people into a deeper experience of God’s love and church community. • Embrace those who “slip through the cracks.” We will do this each week by: • Eating and fellowshiping together. • Viewing and discussing the Alpha training DVD that will equip us to host a small group, provide pastoral care and pray for others. • Dialoguing to identify one another’s gifts and matching them with the needed individual and group roles and responsibilities. • Praying for one another and for guests at our next Alpha course, August 22 to November 14. Alpha facilitators from our most recent course each played a role in the experiences of participants, who have expressed: “I saw the love of God in action through our facilitators. They not only shared the Word of God, but the love of Christ by always serving, caring and reaching out.” “I learned so much from the women in my group.”

“My understanding of the Bible increased, and ways to apply it to my everyday life were reinforced.” “I loved the small group time.” “I met some wonderful, spiritual and interesting friends, who were all so motivated.” “Alpha helped me to encourage others on their search and to pray for them more intentionally and specifically.” “I feel I have reached the starting point for a new beginning.” To discover how you too can influence the lives of others in similar ways, we invite you to attend this upcoming Alpha small group leader training; RSVP to Laura (407-949-7165 or laura.young@northlandchurch.net).

Draw a line leading the bees to the heart.

My name is: __________________________________________________

Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to THE BEEHIVE! I’m Buzz. Stick with me during our family worship service, and we’ll learn more about who God is and what He has done!

We worship God as the Maker of the universe. He has made everything beautiful. He even made our hearts want to be close with Him forever.

Answer: ECCLESIASTES

ETERNITY IN YOUR HEART Ecclesiastes 3:9-12

A wise person wrote this in the Bible: “What does the worker get for his hard work? I’ve seen the heavy load God has put on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” That means God has given people a sense of what He’s been doing down through the ages. But they can’t completely figure out what God’s done from the beginning to the end. They should be happy and do good while they live. There’s nothing better for them to do than that.

Wait and see.

Draw a picture of your heart with a clock inside it to stand for eternity in your heart.

Be the Church

Responding to Christ for the benefit of others

Engage in a conversation with God. BY SEAN COOPER Minister of Service and Equipping

A

s a church staff, we are always grappling with what it means to be the church. As His people, what are those things that most clearly reflect Christ to the world? As His pure and spotless bride, what are the responses that indicate our devotion to Christ? Reading the Old Testament has opened my eyes to being the church. Spending time in the Pentateuch has made me realize that the church is simply the people of God watching and responding to their Creator. So much of the stories in the Old Testament, especially the poets’ and prophets’, are about these two actions. God loves extravagantly and faithfully, and we can witness this every day. By seeing God in action, the church is motivated to action. By seeing God love, the church is motivated to love. So for me, being the church is watching an amazing Creator and responding in similar ways. Knowing the character of God shapes our own character, so it’s important that we look at the ways God’s people have watched and responded to God throughout history. In the Scriptures, we can see patterns of how the children of God loved others the same way our Creator showed love. Part of the reason I love the Scriptures and love learning from other cultures today is so that I can participate in an eternal, transcultural response to who God is and what He has done. In other words, though we are free to respond to God in many

Professing Faith Through Baptism

A

Pray

t Northland, we believe that Christ ordained certain holy rituals for the church to observe, through which His Spirit uniquely acts. These holy rituals are symbolic of spiritual events. They are baptism and the Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion or the holy Eucharist. Baptism is a public sacrament that requires a one-time observance. It is an outward sign, a public statement of belonging to Christ. Baptism is not for the purpose of forgiveness. Rather, it symbolizes repentance, which is necessary for forgiveness. As it is the Holy Spirit who baptizes each believer into the body of Christ, we extend liberty of conscience in the mode of water baptism. Some in our congregation prefer immersion, which symbolizes the believer’s death, burial and resurrection with Christ. Others in our fellowship prefer pouring or sprinkling, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s work of uniting us to Christ, cleansing us from sin and regenerating us. If you would like to publicly profess your faith in Jesus Christ through baptism, sign up to participate in the next scheduled baptismal service by calling Sharon Ferreira (407-949-7189 or sharon.ferreira@northlandchurch.net). The next baptismal service is scheduled for Sunday, June 13 at 2 p.m. at the home of Ken and Diane Watkins. Maps are available at the information desk in the church foyer. Northland recommends the Steps for Young Believers course for children prior to baptism, but it is not mandatory. For information about grade school student baptisms, contact Diane Jones (diane.jones@northlandchurch.net or 407949-7188).

creative ways, there are a number of ways that are similar in all places and times. A lot of guesswork is eliminated from the Christian life when we look at the ways that people around the world and throughout history have worshiped God and reflected His love. We serve a God of grace. Salvation is a work that only Christ could accomplish. There is nothing we can add or take away, and this very act of God is the catalyst for why we want to respond to Him. God is the master initiator, and we are given this incredible life to witness His amazing work in action in the world. We cannot earn our salvation, nor can we emulate God’s work, yet we are placed in this exact time and space to show others what God has shown us. For me personally, there are basic responses to God that I realize are key to my growth as a believer. These are by no means a way to increase my spirituality, nor do these actions earn any credit toward my salvation. The more I know God’s character, the more I realize how sinful I am. Responding in these seven ways is not for the purpose of making us feel better about ourselves; rather, we can respond in these ways as a result of being amazed at the God we serve. You will begin to see the responses listed below often. They are going to be used by Northland’s leadership as a sort of template to provide clear pathways to spiritual maturity as we continue to learn together what it means to “be the church.”

“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer.” — Peter, an eyewitness (1 Peter 3:12, NIV)

Serve Others Meet the needs of the people around you. “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” — Jesus (Matthew 25:40, NIV)

Be in Community Foster environments for relationship. “All men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” — Jesus Christ (John 13:35, NIV)

Share Your Story Tell others what God is doing in your life. “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” — Peter, an eyewitness (1 Peter 3:15, NIV)

Live Generously Give what God’s given you.

“You are the light of the world.” — Matthew 5:14 (NIV)

Worship God Glorify God for Who He is and what He has done.

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” — Jesus Christ (Matthew 6:21, NASB)

Read the Bible Study God’s message to you often.

“The time is coming and has now come when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.” — Jesus Christ (John 4:23, NIV)

“I am watching over My word to perform it.” — God (Jeremiah 1:12, NASB)

Third Millennium Ministries

T

hird Millennium Ministries is quickly becoming a key partner for Northland. Like Northland, its goal is to give away its resources to anyone who wants them. Janie Pillow envisioned Third Millennium when she realized that Christian leaders around the world need to be trained in their own countries. With the help of Dr. Richard Pratt and a number of others who share her vision, Third Millennium was launched in 1997 to create multimedia curriculum for the world for free. Most pastors in other countries have little or no theological education, and no way to obtain one. Third Millennium Ministries is working to meet this need by creating and distributing a high-quality multimedia seminary curriculum in the major languages of underprivileged nations: English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin) and Russian. Today Third Millennium has a team of more than 20 full-time employees and more than 16 translators from around the world. Located in Longwood, they focus on the five languages above, which cover 42 percent of the world’s population. Third Millennium’s materials also are translated into other languages, including Farsi (Iran), Turkish, French, Mongolian, several African Arabic dialects, Amharic (Ethiopia), Hindi and several other languages of India. To learn more, visit Third Millennium’s website (www.thirdmill.org). To use its resources yourself, go to video resources and then click on free downloads. The resources can be downloaded to your computer or mobile device.

Worship in the Arts Camp Available at Northland

T

he Worship in the Arts Camp will create an encouraging environment for one week of instruction in the disciplines of song, dance, visual art and spiritual growth. At the camp, to be held July 12 to 16 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for kids in third through eighth grades, instruction and mentoring will be provided by mature artists working alongside young adult artists, including worship interns. In keeping with the mission of equipping young artists for a lifetime of worship, the week will culminate in an evening of celebration and service for families in our community. The evening will begin with a young artist musical using Scripture, visual art, dance and song to express the story of who God is and what He has done. After the program, the performers, their families and the Northland community will gather in the foyer to pack meals for the children of Haiti, in conjunction with Kids Against Hunger. Goals of the camp include developing each child’s talent, engaging children in reflecting upon their own part in God’s story, and encouraging the children to express their stories more effectively and authentically. The evening will provide an opportunity for us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind, and our neighbor as ourselves. The registration fee for participants is $90 and $45 for each additional child in the family. You also can purchase tickets for the Friday night event, “The Story,” at the time of registration. The tickets are $10 per person, and proceeds go directly to Change This World Inc. in support of the Kids Against Hunger service project. For more information or to register for the camp, visit www.northlandchurch.net/events and click on the “Worship in the Arts” link. to The Carpenter’s House food and books, which the tennis team brought over the day of their gathering. Sharon shared that she and all of her players had their hearts filled by God through their service to the Manfredi family. “This experience was wonderful, but you should know that these girls don’t have any intention of letting it rest there,” the mom of one of the tennis players said. The girls have collected clothing, shoes, videos and games for the children. “As a mother, I am so blessed to have children with hearts for others.” Great job, girls! As you continue to reach out to the Manfredi family, God will continue to fill your hearts up with joy. Jesus spoke of Himself, saying, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45, NIV). As Christians, our role in this world is to be ambassadors for Jesus, and these ambassadorial doors open up as we step out and commit to serve other people. How can you step out and serve Jesus? Take the inspiring example of Sharon and her tennis team, and ask the Lord what He would have you do for Him! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

(Continued from page 5.)

Judaism that Jesus was describing all about love. It came from the Law, of which they were so knowledgeable. The first part came from Deuteronomy 6:5, in which God is giving the Israelites the lowdown on how to follow Him, some of the most sacred instructions in all of the Old Testament and some of my personal favorite Old Testament verses. In fact, do me a favor; go read all of Deuteronomy 6. It is amazing, I promise – not to mention, it too looks to address the connections necessary between God and man, and man and one another. The second verse comes from a different text in the Old Testament, Leviticus 19:18, which is in the midst of the “sundry” laws, called such because they are a bit of a hodgepodge of do’s and don’ts given by the Lord to Moses. In the middle of this listing, the Lord simply states, “You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (NASB), and then, not in Jesus’ statement, maybe because He knew they at least knew this, the Lord reminds Moses of the why behind it all: “I am the Lord.” Just in case the Israelites missed it, he reminds them at the end of this section of teaching to Moses, in verse 37, “You shall thus observe all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them; I am the LORD” (NASB). See, these verses are so important to correctly understand the power of connection, the power of love. The gospel call is to follow and glorify Him, so we have to be connected to Him and to one another in love. First John 4:8 tells us that God is love, so connection to Him is essential! In fact, He tells His disciples that we will be marked as His by the love we have for one another (John 13:35). He says if we say we love Him, we will obey Him (John 14:15). If we are called to love Him and one another, we must be connected to Him and to one another! We connect to Him in many different ways, but some important ways are through the study of His Word, prayer, fellowship, service, worship and giving! If you are not experiencing this in your own life, or you know in your heart and spirit that there is more of it out there for you, I am here to say there is, there always is. Be a part of it with us. Get connected to a Neighborhood Gathering or small group. Come to the Wednesday night prayer gatherings. Serve on Sundays in Children’s Ministries, with the setup/takedown team or as a greeter. There are many ways to be involved and only one way not to be – by your choosing not to be. Don’t let the enemy cause you to miss out on the connection to God and one another that is essential to the Christian life! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

HAPPY TOGETHER … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ Becoming Adults Who Connect With God and Others SCRIPTURE FOCUS:

Ecclesiastes 3:9-12 (NASB)

WORSHIP FOCUS:

...............................................................................................................................................

........................................................................

What profit is there to the worker from that in which he toils? I have seen the task which God has given the sons of men with which to occupy themselves. He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime.

Worship God today as the Author of joy. The joy that comes from knowing Him is our strength.

SUMMARY PRAYER: ....................................................................

“Come, O Lord, in much mercy down into my soul and take possession and dwell there. A poor dwelling, I confess, for so glorious a Person as You. Yet, I am preparing for a fitting reception of You, by holy and fervent desires of Your own inspiring. Enter then, and adorn my soul, and make it a worthy place for You to inhabit, since it is the work of Your own hands. Give me Yourself, without which, even if You should give me all that You ever have made, yet this would not satisfy my desires. Let my soul ever seek You, and let me persist in seeking, until I have found, and am in full possession of You. Amen.” — Brother John Raymond
