Prayer … JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

O

swald Chambers said, “Prayer is not preparation for the greater work; it is the greater work!” If you have been around Northland at Oviedo for any amount of time, you have probably heard me say this once or twice. For one reason, Oswald Chambers is one of Maggie’s and my favorite authors. His work My Utmost for His Highest is one of the most influential works in both of our lives. If you don’t have this daily devotional, please get it and start reading it every day. It is not very long but supernaturally speaks to so many people’s lives, at the same time. I’m not sure how that works, but I just know it to be true. You can view it at rbc.org or utmost.org. Secondly, I love the peace of this statement; it is all His. His work, His purpose, His power, His plan — it is all His. The more I am tapped into that reality, the better off I am, so how about, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6, NASB)? We just started a weekly time of gathering for the simple purpose of one thing and one thing only: to pray together! I have been so surprised by the reactions of individuals who have asked questions like, “What are you going to do during that time? What kind of prayer exactly? Will it be free-form or guided and structured?” In hindsight, I realize these are great questions that come from many different places, including our multi-faith

congregation, as well as the number of new Christians we have in our midst who have never participated in prayer. But I have also come to believe it is because we just don’t pray enough! Throughout Scripture the people of God are set apart and marked by many things. For one we are called to be holy because He is holy. But one of these things has always been by the deep connection His people have had to Him through prayer. I recently heard someone say that great things happen throughout Scripture when the people of God remember to get serious about praying! An example is the story of Abraham’s servant sent to find a wife for Isaac who prays and waits (Genesis 24:15), or Jehoshaphat in 2 Kings 20, who when about to be attacked doesn’t get the battle plans together, but instead calls the entire assembly to fast and cry out to the Lord, or Joel 1:14, when all the inhabitants of the land were called to “cry out to the Lord” (NASB). It is no different in the New Testament, as Christ continually goes off by Himself to pray to the Father. Peter and Cornelius, Paul and Silas in prison, …. It is over and over and over the prayer of God’s people that sets them apart. How about us? Well, let’s start small. Let’s gather every week and pray together. That’s simple; that’s easy; that’s doable. Our staff and leadership are meeting and praying together multiple times a week now, and yesterday we spent half a day together praying for each of you and the work God has invited us into here at Northland at Oviedo. Hope to see you up at the NOCC on Wednesday nights over the summer from 8 to 9 p.m. There we will be praying together, as the body of Christ, so come and be a part of it with us!

orthland’s Student Ministries is passionate about training young people to be leaders that will impact their generation and those that follow. This year we are blessed with three interns. They will have real-life opportunities to sharpen their leadership skills. They will participate in meetings and worship planning, but will also lead the students in worship, prayer and what it means to be the church … everywhere, every day.

Jen Beres is a returning intern this year. She is helping out with Student Ministries, but also is helping to coordinate and care for all of the interns involved in the internship program this year. She is from Columbia International University. Colin Campbel, also interning in Student Ministries, has grown up through the Northland youth

Partner Spotlight: Christian HELP

BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service

T

hroughout the year, Northland partners with a number of organizations in the community. The goal is to share God’s love with others through service and to provide for the needs of our local community. This week we would like to highlight one of those partners, Christian HELP. Christian HELP’s mission is to prevent homelessness by helping the unemployed find jobs while providing for them materially and spiritually. The organization founded the Central Florida Employment Council in 1994, and today more than 800 employers belong to it. Christian HELP also produces the President’s, Governor’s, Chairman of Orange County’s and Mayor of Orlando’s job fairs. In addition to employment help, Christian HELP houses a large Food Distribution Center and offers families a wide variety of resources to meet their needs. Whether you are looking to serve once or on a regular basis, there are many opportunities to serve at Christian HELP. Some of the many volunteer opportunities are in housekeeping, graphic design, phone/clerical assistance, event assistance and assistance in the food pantry. In addition, Christian HELP has a one-time serve opportunity July 23 to assist with its “Christmas in July” program. Details about Christian HELP and opportunities to serve: Dawn (407-834-4022, ext. 224, or dawn@christianhelp.org), www. christianhelp.org or its location, 450 Seminola Blvd., Casselberry)

The teams gather to get their instructions.

Building Spiritual Relationships 1 Peter 2:1-5

Just as babies want pure milk to help them grow, believers want the pure truth in the Bible, God’s Word. If you believe in Jesus, God’s Word will help your heart, soul and mind grow in faith. You can grow like this once you have seen how good the Lord Jesus is. God places the highest value on Jesus. Jesus is called the living Stone. People did not accept Him, but God chose Him to be the world’s only Savior and Lord. As you depend on Jesus, you are part of the church. Remember, the church is not a physical building; it is the group of people who worship Jesus. Picture believers as living stones being built into a house for worship. God the Father accepts you and your offerings of worship, just because you belong to His Son.

A believer.

Draw a picture of a building with one main, special stone in one of its corners.

Ohhh.

Celebrate Recovery Helps People Work Through Hurts, Hang-ups

M

any people believe recovery is only for drug addicts and alcoholics — people whose lives appear out of control. But the Bible teaches that all of us have sinned, and sin is addicting. As there are no perfect people, we’ve all made mistakes that hurt us and the ones we love. We are all relying on God’s grace for every good thing in our lives. The goal of Celebrate Recovery is not simply to recover from past sins and hurts. The goal is to become Christlike in our character. Most of us have heard the expression “Time heals all wounds.” Unfortunately, this is not usually the way it works. Wounds that are left untended can fester and spread infection throughout your entire body and can affect generation after generation. The reality is, you probably are not going to get well on your own. Persistent temptations must be team tackled head-on with the help of community. Through the use of eight recovery principles

taken directly from the Beatitudes, harmful self-protective strategies and patterns can be uncovered. As participants begin to accept God’s grace and healing, spiritual growth begins and freedom from compulsive and dysfunctional behavior can be achieved. This freedom creates peace, serenity, joy and, most importantly, a stronger relationship with God and others. Because we were created for relationship, the more authentic the relationships we build, the more connected we feel. To be seen, understood, appreciated and loved for who we are is our greatest desire because loving and being loved unconditionally is what we need. That is loving as God loves. He loves us simply because we are His children, not because of the way we look, the way we process or the things we do. Whether your problem is emotional, relational, spiritual, sexual or chemical, Celebrate Recovery has a place for you. If you are interested in learning to live more authentically while working through your own hurts, hang-ups and habits, join us for Celebrate Recovery on Fridays in the Children’s Worship Wing. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. ($2 per person; children eat for free), the meeting is at 7 p.m., and small groups begin at 8 p.m. Free child care is provided. Details: Laurie Jean Harrington (407-927-4393 or lauriejean2@bellsouth.net) or Mary Ann Mannen (407-9134777 or mmannen@cfl.rr.com)

by Rick Warren

1. Realize I’m not God; I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and my life is unmanageable. “Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor” (Matthew 5:3).

2. Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover. “Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).

3. Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ’s care and control. “Happy are the meek” (Matthew 5:5).

4. Openly examine and confess my faults to God, to myself and to another person whom I trust. “Happy are the pure in heart” (Matthew 5:8).

5. Voluntarily submit to any and all changes God wants to make in my life. “Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires” (Matthew 5:6).

6. Evaluate all my relationships, offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for harm I’ve done to others when possible, except when doing so would harm them or others. “Happy are the merciful” (Matthew 5:7); “Happy are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9).

7. Reserve a daily time with God for selfexamination, Bible reading and prayer in order to know God and His work for my life and gain the power to follow His will.

8. Yield myself to be used by God to bring this Good News to others, both by my example and by my words. “Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires” (Matthew 5:10).

Oviedo Counseling Clinic Offers Help at Discounted Rates BY Sarah Baker, MA Director of Clinical Operations, Oviedo Counseling Clinic

8 Recovery Principles Based on the Beatitudes

vision of a partnership between RTS and Northland came about so that those who needed help could receive it, and students who needed experience would receive hands-on, supervised training. What an amazing ministry meeting the needs of so many here in Central Florida! Since 2005, we’ve had more than 18,000 appointments at the Oviedo Counseling Clinic. We’ve had more than 15,000 hours of group counseling. We’ve had around 100 counselors just in the past five years. A new service will be offered this summer – counseling services from master’s level graduates or registered interns. They will offer counseling services at a continued discounted rate at the Oviedo Counseling Clinic. Rates vary but are at a great savings from typical counseling fees, and some scholarships are available. If you would like to find out more about the Oviedo Counseling Clinic, visit its website (www.oviedocounseling.com) or call me (407-366-9493, ext. 256).

ach spring I go through a period as an “empty nester,” not because my own children are moving out, but because each spring brings with it a graduation and a heartfelt goodbye. Each spring a class of graduate counseling students at Reformed Theological Seminary graduates and moves on to the next step in God’s calling for their lives. I reflect back over the growth and commitment I have seen in them over the last two years. Many students move their families from around the world as an act of obedience to God’s calling to seek this degree. They carry their books, laptops, clothing, breakfast, lunch and dinner around campus most days for two years. They struggle with what God’s redemption looks like in our lives. They celebrate God’s faithfulness to them, as He gives them the words to say in difficult situations. I see them cry with pain in their eyes as they ask the tough, dreaded questions of life that so many of their clients are asking as well. I walk into rooms to turn off the lights, only to see them privately praying in counseling rooms. I hear of their leading clients to Christ. As they walk across that stage to receive their diplomas, I applaud their accomplishment and their courage. These graduate students have been a part of the staff at the Oviedo Counseling Clinic. Some of you don’t know them as students, but as counselors, perhaps your counselor. These students are the counseling graduate interns of the Oviedo Counseling Clinic at RTS. They are in the classroom by day and the clinic by night. RTS counseling students have been meeting with The students are in the classroom by day and in the clinic counseling by night. folks from the Central Florida area since 1994. A

Praxis Deals With Negative Emotions Biblically

A

n anxious young mother couldn’t drive herself to meetings when she began to come to Praxis in May 2009. She was too uncomfortable to sit through a whole meeting. However, in learning to use the principles taught, she began to realize how much God loves her, and she was able to see His desire for her life to be full. Situations that were once obstacles became opportunities for her to see God work. She was soon driving around town with her three children and going to parties with her husband. She soon saw her family learning the principles and experiencing renewed relationship. God changed her pain into His story. Praxis is an intergenerational small group sponsored by Northland since June 1993. The purpose of the group is to teach people to learn to deal with intense feelings of anger, abandonment, fear, loneliness and other negative emotions using biblical principles. You are invited to attend the meetings on Tuesdays, from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at Northland at Longwood, room 4204.

Learn how to deal with your negative emotions using biblical principles.

Worship in the Arts Camp Available at Northland

T

he Worship in the Arts Camp will create an encouraging environment for one week of instruction in the disciplines of song, dance, visual art and spiritual growth. At the camp, to be held July 12 to 16 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for kids in third through eighth grades, instruction and mentoring will be provided by mature artists working alongside young adult artists, including worship interns. In keeping with the mission of equipping young artists for a lifetime of worship, the week will culminate in an evening of celebration and service for families in our community. The evening will begin with a young artist musical using Scripture, visual art, dance and song to express the story of who God is and what He has done. After the program, the performers, their families and the Northland community will gather in the foyer to pack meals for the children of Haiti, in conjunction with Kids Against Hunger. Goals of the camp include developing each child’s talent, engaging children in reflecting upon their own part in God’s story, and encouraging the children to express their stories more effectively and authentically. The evening will provide an opportunity for us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind, and our neighbor as ourselves. The registration fee for participants is $90 and $45 for each additional child in the family. You also can purchase tickets for the Friday night event, “The Story,” at the time of registration. The tickets are $10 per person, and proceeds go directly to Change This World Inc. in support of the Kids Against Hunger service project. For more information or to register for the camp, visit www.northlandchurch.net/events and click on the “Worship in the Arts” link. BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ Building Spiritual Relationships Scripture focus:

1 Peter 2:1-5 (NASB)

Worship focus:

...............................................................................................................................................

........................................................................

Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Worship Christ today as the Author and Perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:1-2). As we fix our eyes on Him, drawing nearer to Him, we will become closer to others along the way.

summary prayer: ....................................................................

Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before His passion prayed for His disciples that they might be one, as you and He are one; Grant that Your church, being bound together in love an obedience to You, may be united in one body by the one spirit, that the world may believe in Him whom You have sent, Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (BCP)
