Refining Relationships With Your Spouse or Friends A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER
The Christian life is the life of sons and daughters; it is not the life of slaves. It is freedom, not bondage. Of course, we are slaves of God, of Christ, and one another. We belong to God, to Christ, to one another, and we love to
But this kind of service is freedom.

UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: JUNE 27 — Service Project: Assemble Hygiene Kits
O
ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.
Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sundaynights)
We’ve spent the last several weeks collecting hygiene kit items, and now we will assemble them! Along with packaging these kits, which will go to various organizations in our community, bring your kids to help make bookmarks. Yes, adults, you can make bookmarks, too. Look for instructions after the worship service that night. We want to package 1,000 kits!

mountdoranews Stories From the Field: God’s Work Through Ordinary People Northlanders at Mount Dora go to the ends of the earth.
Though few people are called “to the ends of the earth” in a career, many receive an invitation from the Lord at least once or twice in their lives to go and serve and learn and listen and love people who are vastly different from them, for a week, or two, or a month. At Northland, we call these trips Distributed Journeys. Three Mount Dora congregants — Shawn Lundberg, her daughter Rachel and Steven Kluesener — are responding to Jesus’ invitation to go on a Distributed Journey. They are setting aside time to go and be God’s witnesses to rural peoples in Brazil. They ust before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He gave His small all feel a very strong pull from the Lord to go. Steven said, “Why band of followers this promise and command: “You will be should I stay around here all summer when I can go [to Brazil] my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and help others?” and to the ends of the earth” (Acts They will join 1:8). However, they are gaining so much more. They are joining Jesus in His work, to make His love and His ways known to the nations of the earth. They have the privilege of being used by the Lord to serve people that He deeply wants to be in His family. They have the joy of sacrificing for the God who loved them and gave His Son for them! Is God calling you to take a short-term mission trip? Northland has many Distributed Journeys for you to choose from. I invite you to visit www.somedayistoday.net and view the opportunities. We would love to help you follow God’s call to the ends of the earth! I also invite you to join Shawn, Rachel and Steven by praying for them. Prayer is the key that opens doors that are shut and invites protection from evil. Pray that God uses them in mighty ways and speaks to them in close whispers. Pray that He shows these three more about Himself and more about themselves. Pray that many come to the Lord and many grow in the Lord through their ministry. And pray that God provides the resources to get there. If you would like to support them financially, you can give at any Northland worship site. Make your check out to “Northland Church” and put “Brazil — Lundberg and Kluesener” in the memo section of the check. Or you can mail your check to Patti Harshey, Northland’s administrator of Distributed Journeys, at the Longwood site. Let’s join these three Mount Adorables as they become His witnesses to the ends of the earth! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

The Importance of Prayer JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e have been meeting on Wednesday nights for about a month now, and it has been amazing! Why wouldn’t it be? This is the body of Christ in communion with each other and with God; is there anything better? Well, rather than your taking my word for it, for two more weeks, I simply will list some verses on the importance of prayer for us, His people! (All are taken from the NIV.) Matthew 7:7-8: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:11: “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” Matthew 21:22: “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Mark 9:28-29: “After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’ He replied, ‘This kind can come out only by prayer.’” Mark 11:17: “And as he taught them, he said, ‘Is it not written: “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations”?’”
Mark 11:22-25: “‘Have faith in God,’ Jesus answered. ‘I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.’” Luke 6:12: “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.” Luke 11:1-13: “One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.”’ Then he said to them, ‘Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, “Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.” Then the one inside answers, “Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.” I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you
then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’” Luke 18:1-10: “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: ‘In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, “Grant me justice against my adversary.” For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, “Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming!”’ And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?’” Luke 18:1, 9-14: “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. … To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: “God, I thank you that I am not like other men – robbers, evildoers, adulterers – or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.” But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.’” >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

I
was northbound on I-95 this past Memorial Day weekend when I suddenly saw brake lights. I noticed a man standing in the middle of the road, waving traffic to stop. I pulled safely over to the shoulder and caught a glimpse of someone lying in the middle of I-95. I knew instantly that a serious accident had taken place, and I was about to be one of the first responders on the scene. I carefully got out of my car and approached the vehicle and a gentleman who was standing next to a victim of the crash. He identified himself as a retired fire rescue worker, and I told him that I was CERT-trained (Community Emergency Response Teams) and did crisis counseling. Someone else showed up with a box of rubber gloves that we put on to assess the victims. I immediately approached a young woman who was lying on her back against a guardrail. She was unconscious and bleeding extensively from the back of her head. I reached for her wrist to see if I could find a pulse, but I could not find one. Her breathing had slowed down to an occasional gasp. Within a few minutes, her breathing had stopped, and I knew that I had lost her. I immediately checked in with the fireman and discovered that the victim he had been working with had died as well. Together we focused on two other victims. One was a man pinned under the overturned vehicle, and the other was a woman lying
on her side across the center line of the highway. We quickly condolences to this 42-year-old woman from Honduras, who determined that both had a pulse and were breathing. I noticed that she was standing on hot pavement without shoes and asked a rescue worker to retrieve her sandals from the car and bring some bottled water. Help Serve During Disasters
Come to the Disaster Response Weekend to learn how. BY GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads
H
urricane season is here. June 1 marked the beginning of the 2010 season, and the important question is, Are you prepared? Do you have a Family Disaster Plan? Do you know how to prepare? Do you want to help serve others during a disaster? This weekend we want to raise awareness of the hurricane season as well as many other potential disasters we could encounter, and also educate Northlanders on the many opportunities to serve during disasters. The Northland Disaster Response Team (DRT) has been working together forming specialty subgroups, providing opportunities locally, nationally and internationally. We are looking for people interested in leading these teams. When a disaster hits, many leaders are necessary to organize, strategize and execute the necessary plans. Each of Northland’s DRTs has a specific plan, including required training necessary during deployment or local community outreach. Some of the team assignments require you to simply show up, while others have specific training requirements. On June 26, 27 and 28, the Northland DRT will hold a Disaster Response Weekend to provide information on how you can join a team if you’re interested, leadership opportunities, necessary training and how to prepare a Family Disaster Plan. We also will register individuals with special needs who are Seminole County residents with our local Emergency Operations Center. The Haiti earthquakes are an example of how we can take our local training and serve others in times of need. Currently, 110 Northlanders have been trained in CERTs (Community Emergency Response Teams), and we have hundreds of congregation members registered to serve in the future. It’s time to take the commitment and turn that into action. The DRT has very specific areas where you can serve. You can join any of the teams at the Northland disaster-response website by going to www.northlandchurch.net and clicking on the “Serve Others” link, then clicking “Disaster Response.” Below is a summary of each of the teams and the teams’ responsibilities.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT TEAM The Behavioral Health Assessment Team travels with all other DRTs and provides emotional assessment and support to disaster survivors as well as the team members. The Behavioral Health Assessment Team may be called upon to help in the following ways: • Identify emotional and physiological symptoms of survivors. • Offer prayer and comfort to survivors. • Request and manage additional resources as needed (through local ESF-8, Emergency Support Functions). • Provide immediate intervention, if appropriate. • Act as a liaison with all disaster behavioral health responders. • Act as a liaison between the state and local EOC (Emergency Operations Center) on behavioral health issues. • Make coping information and self-care guidelines available to all responders. • Establish prayer lines and give counseling, spiritual guidance and stress management to survivors and first responders. COMMUNITY CARE TEAM The Community Care Team members have general disasterrelated duties. They perform a variety of tasks for local areas in need. They may be called upon to: • Distribute food, water, ice, diapers or other goods. • Register and coordinate unaffiliated/affiliated volunteers within the impacted areas. • Help remove debris or sheet rock, at times utilizing a chain saw. • Provide carpentry services, such as roof repairs, or help with construction for short- and long-term housing. • Establish the call center and a “telephone tree” when a disaster hits. • Act as a liaison with the ICS (Incident Command System) team and staff. ANIMAL CARE TEAM The Animal Care Team performs a variety of tasks for local pet owners in need and may be called upon to establish transitional pet shelters. KITCHEN AND FOOD PREP TEAM This team staffs the 18-wheel mobile kitchen trailers. There are several smaller teams necessary within this group. Food-service professionals as well as unskilled volunteers are welcome and needed on this team. The Kitchen and Food Prep Team may be called upon to:
Partner Spotlight Frontline Outreach BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service
T
hroughout the year, Northland partners with a number of organizations in the community. The goal is to share God’s love with others through service and to provide for the needs of our local community. This week we would like to highlight one of those partners, Frontline Outreach. Frontline Outreach is Orlando’s oldest outreach to urban children. In the heart of Orlando’s west side and surrounded by more than 1,000 housing units, Frontline Outreach offers educational and leadership programs for youths and families in urban Orlando. Frontline Outreach’s vision is to prepare young people to become world-class leaders through early childhood and character-development programs. The organization’s ministry initiatives include the Early Childhood Center, Orange County Head Start, after-school programs, recreational programs and more. Some of the many volunteer opportunities are for classroom moms, tutors, sports coaches, clerical workers/receptionists, and reading and book club mentors. Also, for the summer, certified lifeguards are needed.
For more information about Frontline Outreach or to learn about opportunities to serve, contact volunteer coordinator Stephanie Lutz (stephanie@fl-o.org or 407-2933000), visit www.frontlineoutreach.org, or go to its location at 3000 C.R. Smith St., Orlando.

• Prepare and cook hot and cold meals for survivors and first responders within self-contained mobile-disaster professional kitchens of various sizes and capacities. • Set up and serve from food distribution lines. • Clean up all operations (this is separate from the prep and cook team). • Oversee safety and security of the team as well as those being served. MEDICAL CARE TEAM The Medical Care Team staffs the 18-wheel mobile medical units. There are several smaller teams necessary within this group, and a range of helpers, from medical professionals to unskilled volunteers, is needed. Medical Care Team members may be called upon to: • Set up community outreach in the field (including a clinic for underserved people). • Provide inoculations, medical support and firstresponse health care in dedicated mobile medical semitrailers and canvas shelters during a disaster. • Work as intake and triage personnel. TRANSPORTATION AND MAINTENANCE CARE TEAM The Transportation and Maintenance Care Team is responsible for the transportation, delivery and setup of the disaster-response equipment. Drivers must have a CDL class license. The team has a variety of needs, including maintenance staff able to repair equipment, logistics support and a multitude of other skills. The Transportation and Maintenance Care Team may be called upon to: • Transport the response vehicles to impacted areas (licensed CDL drivers only). • Help raise disaster-relief tents. • Repair equipment as necessary. • Provide maintenance on equipment to keep it in a good state of repair. • Drive forklift equipment as necessary. • Assemble and construct portable shelters. • Set up and take down mobile kitchen units. • Take down all operations when the team is done. • Ensure safety of operation. SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM The Search and Rescue Team is responsible for deploying search-and-rescue (SAR) efforts as directed by our partner, state-sponsored FLA-3 SAR. This team has openings for all levels of team members, including those with limited experience as well as those who can handle search dogs. This is the newest of the DRTs, and many people are able to participate in searches from all over the state.

Answer: GALATIANS
That’s Love
Galatians 5:13-14
Jesus loved us so much that He gave His life to free us from having to pay for our sins. Paul says to use that freedom to serve one another in love. He wrote, “The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Paul explained, “Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not want what belongs to others. It does not brag. It is not proud. It is not rude. It does not look out for its own interests. It does not easily become angry. It does not keep track of other people’s wrongs. Love is not happy with evil. But it is full of joy when the truth is spoken. It always protects, trusts, and hopes. It never gives up.” God will help you love your family and friends with that kind of love!
Yep.
Draw a picture of one way you can love your neighbor. A “neighbor” is anyone you know or meet.
I’d LOVE to!

Children’s Ministries Prayer Team By Carol Moss Volunteer, Prayer Team Leader
I
n spring 2007, I felt the Lord impressing on me His desire for our children to learn early that He’s interested in their concerns and that He hears and answers their prayers. I am a grandmother, and little ones are very close to my heart. One day as I was coming home from church, God showed me clearly how to set up a team of people who would pray weekly for these children’s requests and be able to pray from home, without having to attend a prayer meeting. It was already my job to send to Joel, Vernon and the prayer team members copies of all the prayer cards each week. I already had a large database of intercessors whom I could contact who might want to be a part of this new team. After I shared the idea with the Children’s Ministries team, we began to plan. It took a couple of months to get everything up and running, but now each week the preschool and grade school teachers turn in all their children’s prayer requests, along with their own. These are e-mailed to a team of 24 people who pray for them. The team is small, but mighty. God has handpicked this team, and these team members are faithful to pray for these little ones. I’m amazed at how often the children ask for prayer for their friends or someone other than themselves. One of our team members called to tell me that she’s moving up north to her old hometown and
her previous church, but that she was already in touch with the pastor, telling him all about the Children’s Prayer Team. He wants her to help the children’s department set up the same thing at their church. What a way to be distributed! We hate to lose her, but in one week, God has brought another woman on board who wants to be a part of the team. Student Ministries is in the process of setting up a similar team. So the children’s team is praying now for the formation of the youth team. If you are interested in participating with one of these prayer teams, contact Carol Moss (carol.moss@ northlandchurch.net) to set up a phone interview.
Children’s and Family Library
N
orthland’s children’s library was started with a donation from Janet Whiteside and her daughters, in honor of her husband and their father, H. Custer Whiteside. Custer was a teacher for more than thirty years, and the Whiteside family served the 2-year-olds during Northland’s Sunday morning services. The library is located in the early childhood wing, just past the bookstore, and is open before and after services as well as weekdays. It provides books to encourage, edify and equip children and their parents. One step inside its doors, and you’ll find a fun environment that will encourage families to enjoy reading together. Among the titles available are popular books children and young people enjoy, as well as classic books children have been enjoying for generations. The library of about 2,500 books has something for beginning readers to young teens. Stop by and check out a book for summer reading!
Favorite Reads For preschool and early elementary: • Veggie Tales books: God Made You Special and Three Pirates and a Duck • Max Lucado book: God’s Great Big Love for Me • Picture book biographies: A Picture Book of George Washington and A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. For ages 9-12: • The Young Women of Faith “Lily” series. Begin with book 1, Here’s Lily!, and read on through book 14, Lily’s Passport to Paris.

What authors’ resources are in the library?
40 Days of Community will help move your congregation toward spiritual maturity and a meaningful life on earth, revealing how God uses other people for your good and growth. From the beginning, God’s plan has been that you will fulfill His purposes in community with other people – people in your church family, in your small group and in the world around you. The Bible says we were formed for fellowship, and it’s only in community that we learn life’s most important lesson – how to love.

• 40 Days of Love (six weeks, video series with workbook), by Rick Warren Unearth the core of Jesus’ ministry in how we show love to the people God has placed in our lives here on earth. You, too, may be baptized by immersion or sprinkling as a public profession of your personal faith and trust in Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of your life (Matthew 28:19). The next baptism is Sunday, July 11. See page 11 for details.
H
ow would you like to experience life on a vibrant university campus in Beijing? As a facilitator in the Total Immersion Program (TIP) at Peking University, you could. If you are a native speaker of English, you are qualified, and it is even possible to receive free lodging and a monthly stipend.
What is TIP? TIP is an English-only program designed to improve students’ oral English in only 17 days. A unique feature of TIP is that it uses a right-brained, student-centered, childlike approach to learning. TIP students are elementary school English teachers who come from the most impoverished corners of China to improve their language skills. They accomplish this by participating in different activities throughout the day, such as class time, game time, morning motivational time, meals and so on. By surrounding themselves in a totally English environment, students improve their English quickly. By attacking their limitations, building their confidence and committing themselves, students are successful in their personal and professional learning.
What are the options? TIP needs both short-term and long-term facilitators (teachers) for the following programs: Kevin Hinkle
Vivian Moomey
And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also — not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. –1 Peter 3:21 (NIV)

Be a Missionary in Your Own Home Host a Japanese student in August By Warren Griffith
M
ission To Japan, a Northland-supported ministry, is bringing a group of Japanese high school and college students to Orlando to study English, learn about the Bible and go sightseeing August 2 to 31. The program allows Mission To Japan to share the Gospel with Japanese students who know little about Christianity. Host families are needed to make a student a part of their family for the month (students will be away on a beach retreat August 9 to 13). Mission To Japan will take care of the students during the day by providing English and Bible classes, and by taking the students sightseeing. Host families are needed to provide a room, some meals and a loving Christian home. Host families simply drop their student off at Northland by 9:15 a.m. each weekday, and pick up their student in the early evenings. A host family orientation is provided to help you have a great experience. Why not take a step of faith and allow your whole family to be part of a mission opportunity to share the love of Christ with a student from Japan? BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ Refining Relationships With Your Spouse or Friends Scripture focus:
Galatians 5:13-14 (NASB)
Worship focus:
...............................................................................................................................................
For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”
........................................................................
Worship Christ today for the freedom He gives. His salvation frees us to truly love and serve one another.
summary prayer: ....................................................................
Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before His passion prayed for His disciples that they might be one, as You and He are one; Grant that Your church, being bound together in love and obedience to You, may be united in one body by the one spirit, that the world may believe in Him whom You have sent, Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (BCP)
