Happy Together
... growing together as we grow in Christ
Reconcilable Differences A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR VERNON RAINWATER
As people reconciled
to God by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we believe that we are called to respond to conflict
in a way that is remarkably different from the way the world deals with conflict. We also believe that conflict
provides opportunities to glorify God, serve other people, and
grow to be like Christ.

ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

Someone is screaming for ice scream, so it’s time. Stay after church for everyone’s favorite summer treat. Grab the kids, head to the playground area, and enjoy some dessert while meeting new people and catching up with some friends. Is there a catch? Only that you need to bring your favorite ice cream and topping, and drop it off in the foyer. UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: JULY 11 — Pray for Our Missionaries
After the worship service this week, we invite you to stay for a few minutes and pray for various missionaries serving around the world. Alan Chantelau, Northland’s director of Missionary Care and Development, will share stories of ministry taking place around the world. Through your tithes and offerings, Northland supports a variety of Kingdom efforts. Come hear about a few of them and pray specifically for the work God is doing in other countries.
It’s easy to take things like soap for granted when you are fortunate enough to have a home. The hygiene kits will help many of the homeless people in our area. Say a prayer for those in need.
You are never too young to learn that God wants us to serve our neighbors.

THIS WEEK! Greeting Card Ministry
His Holiness, Our Togetherness JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e have had such an amazing first half of the year at Northland at Oviedo, from the double-digit baptisms to the 16 people who went on a combined eight mission trips around the world, to Haiti; Jamaica; Ukraine; Swaziland; Khayelitsha, South Africa; Egypt; Sierra Leone; and Atlanta. We have experienced lots of community building, including neighborhood gatherings, small groups, classes at the NOCC, vibrant student ministry life, and lots of service and outreach to the surrounding community and one another. Recently, the Northland at Oviedo staff, elders and leadership team came together for a retreat at one of our homes to thank the Lord for all of this, get to know one another better, and pray over the rest of the year and on. We fasted and then ate together. We worshiped, prayed, listened to Scripture and shared some life stories. It was a sweet time of fellowship and connection. Many of you are leaders in our community and could have been there too, like when we gathered more than a year ago at the Live Oak clubhouse for our Vision Summit. We hope more and more of you will be involved in these kinds of gatherings in the near future as we look to grow our faith family through various community settings … stay tuned! The theme of our retreat was simple: His Holiness and Our Togetherness! We spent time in the Word looking at the incredible picture of who God really is (read all of Book 4 of the Psalms, chapters 90 to 106; Exodus 19:16-18; Isaiah 6:1-6; Ezekiel 1:22-28; and Revelation 4). We talked about how this
picture of God is so huge, yet He chose to make it so personal by sending His Son here as a baby, to know our temptations and to save us from our sins. We thought about how that accurate picture should impact us and how we live our lives, especially how we accomplish His will here together! Then we looked at that call of us on mission for Him and His glory, together! We read through John 17, Romans 15:5, Ephesians 4, Colossians 3:12-15, John 13:35 and Matthew 28:18-20. We talked about this Great Commission at the end of Matthew and how it accurately starts with a picture of who He is: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18, NIV). Then he calls us to live life on life together, becoming learners of who He (Christ) was, over a long period of time (I mean God Himself in the form of man chose to spend three years with His disciples, not six weeks), and while we are doing that, we would teach one another how to obey all that He commanded. We discussed how there are no shortcuts to this thing called the Christian life and how it is not optional; it is necessary! We look forward to continuing on in this adventure with all of you and bringing glory to God as we do it! I pray you will join in with us and be a part of it! >>> www.facebook.com/northlandoviedo

aroundnorthland Ministering to Seminole, Orange County Inmates BY GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads
B
eing involved in the lives of hundreds of inmates from Seminole and Orange counties is a tremendous privilege. Each weekend our teams are blessed by the men and women worshiping together Sunday mornings and Monday evenings. Typically, more than 130 to 150 inmates worship along with us every weekend. The Prison and Jail Ministry also leads weekly mentoring classes and Celebrate Recovery inside the jail for both men and women, creating a pathway to a Christian 12-step connection when they are released. Oftentimes the inmates are inspired by a worship service, a comment that a mentor has made to them, or a breakthrough that happens during a Celebrate Recovery personal sharing time. In each of these instances, it is clear God is working through them, and we want to share some of these precious moments with the entire congregation. The women in Orange County were so moved by the news of Dr. Hunter’s granddaughter Ava that they got on their
5
knees and prayed together. They also created a beautiful handmade card offering their thoughts and prayers. Creating an environment that is safe, nonjudgmental and open is the challenge our teams have faced. We work at building trust in a setting where lack of trust is the norm. We suggest to the inmates that they attend a house of worship that is welcoming to those who have been incarcerated. They tell us stories about how they are watched, followed and judged, and feel they don’t have a lot in common with others within the congregation. During several focus groups we held within the jails, they went on to tell us that no one will ever trust them again, they felt like they were in a pit, and the expectation is that you should have learned all you need to know from being in jail. Finally, the most touching comment came from a young man who had tried to go back to his home church. He said, “I feel more shame when my church does not accept me.” How do we meet the inmates where they are? We have mentors who don’t see what they have done; instead, they see what God has planned for them. We listen to their pain, and encourage them with Scripture and the need to build an intimate relationship with God. The
inmates often ask us, “Why do you do this?” Our answer is, “Because that is what Jesus did.” Also, to help the inmates, Northland is participating in a community-wide initiative known as the Healing and Transition (HAT) program. Churches are gathering together to commit to becoming a Station of Hope. Each house of worship will be identified as a welcoming place for those who have been incarcerated, their families and victims of crimes. Each Station of Hope will commit to supporting families and the “returning citizens,” the new term used for inmates, helping to reduce the shame and pain associated with (Continued on page 14.)

All Aboard for Houseboat Evangelism
Brazil Distributed Journey team also painted, ran Vacation Bible School and ... a beauty parlor. BY Emiley Jones Northland Public Relations Intern and Distributed Journey participant
T
his summer I had the incredible opportunity to go on a Distributed Journey to Brazil with 25 other Northlanders. The friendships and relationships that developed were enough to inspire me to want to return and encourage others to experience God at work in the Amazon. I grew up watching my older brother and sister travel to various countries on Northland mission trips, always eager to experience my own journeys. I dreamed of going to Germany like they had, and starting right when I reached high school. Once I was finally old enough, though, and summers repeatedly presented me with Distributed Journey opportunities, I felt no pull to sign up for an international trip. It may have been because Germany was no longer an option or because I doubted my fundraising capabilities. Regardless of my reasoning, I made tepid excuses. At the end of last summer, my dad announced that he thought our family should go on the “Amazon boat trip,” but we laughed the idea off, saying it would be too rustic. As a result, it was quite ironic when I was invited to attend a Brazil Distributed Journey meeting the next summer. What was even more surprising was the irresistible pull I felt toward the trip. Even as I heard things like “at least four shots” and “raise more than
The Brazil Distributed Journey team’s new home was a river boat named J.J. Mesquita-Mackenzie.
$2,000,” I trusted that God would come through. And He certainly did — I received a scholarship that helped pay for the trip, and I did not pass out from the shots! The soccer team and my boat team flew from Miami to Manaus, Brazil, on Saturday, June 12. We stayed in Manaus until Sunday evening, when we boarded our new home, the J.J. Mesquita-Mackenzie. Throughout the week, our team visited five different villages along the Black River, an acidic, tea-colored tributary of the Amazon. Every day began with breakfast at 7 a.m., kitchen duty, worship and devotions. Then we would split up into multiple groups to evangelize, paint, and run a beauty parlor and Vacation Bible School. While the American team worked in the village of the day with designated translators, villagers were able to board the boat for medical and dental attention. After returning to the boat for lunch, we would work a few more hours, occasionally watch the World Cup, and play a game of soccer with the local Brazilians. Every night after dinner on the boat, we attended a worship service in the village’s local church. I went on this trip mainly expecting to be humbled by our village visits. I did not anticipate, however, to be most impacted by the Brazilian crew members. Many of them live in Manaus and spend all of their vacation time serving on the boat; some even attend college as well. It is incredible how genuine and caring they are in everything they do. Whether it was in worship, sharing their testimonies or translating for us, they exemplified patience, compassion, sincerity and love that encouraged our team immensely. I was told that extraordinary relationships would be built, with both my team and the Brazilians, and I had not been misinformed. The marvel of Facebook allows us to continue to communicate with our Northland and Brazilian (Continued on page 14.)

Seeing the need in her own community, she and a few others have decided to serve the families affected by working to provide new backpacks and school supplies to those in need. Terri and those working with her have set a goal to raise 1,000 backpacks and school supplies for the local fishermen and other families directly affected by the oil spill. Those affected include shrimpers, oystermen, commercial fishermen, those who work in ice factories and seafood packinghouses, and even truck drivers who deliver seafood. “They were expecting a plentiful season this year, but just two weeks before the fishing season opened, the oil spill happened, which has closed all of our fishing beds, and they have remained closed,” Terri says. “It is very hard riding down the bayous and seeing all the shrimp boats and oyster boats just lined up when they should be out harvesting seafood.” Since taking on this project a few weeks ago, Terri has decided to focus primarily on two of the hardest hit parishes, Lafourche and Terrebonne. She already has arranged four different drop-off spots in these areas and is rallying nearby communities for their help. In addition, she is asking her home church, Northland, to join in and consider donating some of the backpacks from our yearly backpack drive to the people of Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes. Northland’s church-wide backpack drive is July 31 through August 2. Backpacks are needed for grade school, middle school and high school students. As you prepare your backpacks, consider the grade level of the student for whom you wish to prepare a pack. Supplies needed include: Age-appropriate backpacks Notebooks Folders Crayons (grade and middle school only) Markers Notebook paper Rulers Blue and black ink pens* Colored pencils* Composition notebooks* Protractors* (*For middle and high school students. Other items are suggested for all grade levels.)

Answer: RELATIVES
All My Relatives Romans 12:18
God cares about all of your relatives. A relative is someone who is related to you. A relative can be as nearby as a brother in your home or as far away as a cousin living in a different country. We are very close with some of our relatives. Others we may not know very well, and sometimes we may have relatives we do not get along with. God loves all your relatives, including cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles. He loves them all the same. He wants us to care for and get along with each other. The Bible says, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
Thanks!

Ministry Connects Moms, Celebrates Motherhood By Derika Hacker Evening Meeting Coordinator
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together … but let us encourage one another.” — Hebrews 10:24
A
little more than four years ago, my adventure in motherhood began. While the journey looked appealing, my initiation was less desirable. My world soon became consumed with feeding, diapering, wiping spit-up, feeding again, diapering again and so on. Every once in a while, I would get some sleep. What had once seemed it would be a magical season of my life soon became a reality that often felt lonely. Yes, my precious newborn son was there, and even my spouse on most occasions, but I knew I needed someone I could connect with, someone who could empathize with the physical and emotional pain and frustration of raising a little one. Thankfully, God knew my need. Through a series of dinner groups, I met two other mothers with
sons the same age as my son’s. And although I was working, they continued to communicate with me and orchestrate gettogethers for us all, both with and without children. We were able to share tips on what to feed our boys, how to handle the temper tantrums (the children’s and the mommies’), how to find alone time with God even with small children at our heels, and how to rekindle romance with our spouses after having a child. As our sons grew, so did our relationship. Because of the need within Northland, the Moms4Moms ministry was born two years ago. We knew that other mothers could benefit from the same type of relationship that we were experiencing and receive vital support in their new role as mom. Modeled after many other moms ministries, Moms4Moms seeks to help mothers connect with one another, celebrate motherhood, meet the needs of those around them, and experience God’s love together through relationships and resources. Moms4Moms meets once a month in the fellowship hall at Northland at Longwood, either on Mondays from 9 to 11 a.m., with child care provided, or Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m., beginning in September. Registration for the fall programs will be held at the Longwood site and online August 17 for the Monday groups and August 23 for the Sunday groups. Connect with us immediately and join our weekly playgroups. Details: the Moms4Moms website (www.northlandmoms4 moms.com)
Summer Recommended Reads While summer can be a difficult time to participate in a class or join a group, with all the unpredictable schedules and occasional travels, it is the perfect time to catch up on reading. Here are some all-time favorites from Pastor Vernon Rainwater. They are available for purchase at the Northland Bookstore: The Magnificent Defeat, by Frederick Buechner “In The Magnificent Defeat, Buechner examines what it means to follow Christ, and the ‘magnificent defeat’ of the human soul by God. Here is prose so beautifully written that it verges on poetry. Yet it wrestles with sweaty contemporary problems, like those who can’t believe.” (United Press International) The Alphabet of Grace, by Frederick Buechner “A book by an experienced writer, a novelist, a poet, a clergyman … a small but beautiful whole ….” (Madeleine L’Engle) A Royal “Waste” of Time, by Marva J. Dawn “Dawn is working at the exact center of what concerns us all, whether we know it or not – God and the worship of God. This is a passionate book, its passion informed by accurate analysis of the culture and a disciplined following of Jesus.” (Eugene H. Peterson) Orthodoxy, by G.K. Chesterton Chesterton’s timeless explanations of the essentials of the Christian faith and of his pilgrimage to belief (more than 750,000 copies sold) is a must-read for all thinking Christians.
Time together with other moms who understand the trials, tribulations and celebrations of motherhood is invaluable.
Belong Study Provides Sense of Connection Join the next study, beginning August 1.
O
ver the last two years, approximately 2,000 people have completed Northland’s Belong class. Belong is a small group study about what it means to belong to Christ and to the body of Christ. It is also Northland’s pathway to membership. The most common feedback received from participants is that as a result of this four-week course, led by Pastor Dr. Kevin Urichko, participants experience a new sense of connection to one another and to this body. Read these comments from recent participants: “The Belong study allowed me to interact with others in different stages of developing their relationship with Christ and Northland church. Through the sharing of stories and experiences, I was able to get a better understanding of … what my journey should be as a new believer.” — Sequoya “The best part about our Belong class was the camaraderie and sharing of experiences. Never will you meet such a tight-knit group bond upon completion of the course. It was awesome!” — Nora “Northland church for me is the best place in Seminole County. I have had a wonderful opportunity with the Belong group to know great people. Pastor Kevin is a great teacher, but the best is to feel these people are my family. Thanks to all of you! And Dr. Hunter, thank you so much for the book Inner State 80. It is amazing. I enjoy it. (Also, I am improving my English!) Thanks, and God bless all of you!” — Lesli
“Any preconceived assumptions were channeled in a positive, real way.” — Edie “The fellowship with others on the same journey was invaluable.” — Bill Pastor Joel C. Hunter and his wife, Becky, share their thoughts with the class.
“[The study] increased my sensitivity … to individuals and groups within the church.” — Brian “The relationships that have been formed through the Belong study have given me a more solid feeling of being connected to the church.” — Maureen “[The study] explained the church — its philosophies, its people, how groups interact, how I can expand my relationship with God and others.” — Rick “[The study provided] new Christian friends and a great sense of belonging — part of a family!” — Margaret “It had me thinking and believing, and gave me confidence to volunteer [for the] church and community.” — Barbara Join the next four-week Belong session, which begins Sunday, August 1 from 11 a.m. to noon in room 4209 at Northland at Longwood. Child care is available. Details: Jamila Millette (jamila.millette@northlandchurch. net or 407-937-1832)

ission To Japan, a Northland-supported ministry, is bringing a group of Japanese high school and college students to Orlando to study English, learn about the Bible and go sightseeing August 2 to 31. The program allows Mission To Japan to share the Gospel with Japanese students who know little about Christianity. Host families are needed to make a student a part of their family for the month (students will be away on a beach retreat August 9 to 13). Mission To Japan will take care of the students during the day by providing English and Bible classes, and by taking the students sightseeing. Host families are needed to provide a room, some meals and a loving Christian home. Host families simply drop their student off at Northland by 9:15 a.m. each weekday, and pick up their student in the early evenings. A host family orientation is provided to help you have a great experience. Why not take a step of faith and allow your whole family to be part of a mission opportunity to share the love of Christ with a student from Japan? prior labels. Each church will train congregation members as “advocates.” Northland is in need of 15 to 20 new mentor advocates. Training is provided. The first training will be delivered here at Northland by The Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College on July 24. Registration is available on Northland’s website under “Events.” The Northland Prison and Jail Ministry has serving opportunities inside as well as outside the jail. Worship hosts for each service welcome the inmates, set up the equipment, hand out the newspapers and collect the prayer requests. If you have a heart for people, this is an amazing area in which to serve. We would need a minimum commitment of every other weekend on Sundays from 8 to 11 a.m. or Mondays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Each week we receive numerous letters for men and women looking for pen pals. This area of service provides an opportunity to share your faith with someone who may not have any family, is alone and might never receive mail. Your letters can provide inspiration and hope and might change a life. Details about the Prison and Jail Ministry: Gretchen Kerr (gretchen.kerr@northlandchurch. net or 407-949-7190) Christine Runner’s drawing from her heart to yours. Meanings behind the imagery in the drawing:
HEART: Speaks of your love and how deep your feelings are in and with the Lord. BRICKS/BARS: These are the walls/bars we are behind right now. Some have these all their life. Yes, there are many reasons why some are in and out of prison. One can be in prison even if they are not behind bars/walls. SWORD PIERCING THE HEART: The reality of our sins to the Lord’s heart every time we choose to sin. He shed His blood for all the sins of the world. THE CROSS: Jesus died on the cross for all. DREAM CATCHER: To catch the bad dreams and release the good ones. DRUM: Peace between wars and conflict inwardly and outwardly. FIRE: Signifies the lower part of hell, fire and brimstone. SHADOW OF THE WOLF/MOON: Lonely, crying out to the world to be heard. GIRL CRYING: She is crying because she is hurting, lost and scared behind all these walls and bars. The place is so cold, damp and very lonely. Outwardly it appears she has lost her freedom, but inwardly she is free indeed in God. “He who the Son sets free is free indeed!” FLOWERS: Signifies our freedom soon and very soon.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Vernon Rainwater, Pastor
“Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms. We have a reason for being together. It is to worship God for who He is and what He has done.” — Pastor Vernon Pastor Vernon Rainwater leads Northland in worship when we gather together for church “in these rooms.” A native of Wilmore, Kentucky, Vernon has been a part of the worship leadership at Northland for 20 years. While distributed ministry and worship are the two primary areas of his focus, his desire is to motivate each generation to live a life of worship everywhere, every day. Vernon has been a musician since he was 17, but he has worked in social work, law enforcement and served in the military as well. With a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Kentucky, he also holds graduate degrees from the University of Kentucky in social work and from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in biblical studies. Vernon and his wife, Connie, have two daughters: Claire and Mandy. Mandy and her husband, Chad Turnbull, live in Casselberry, Florida, and have blessed the Rainwaters with three grandchildren. Claire and her husband, Aaron Reed, live in New York City, where Claire attends Columbia University. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT PASTOR VERNON, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ Reconcilable Differences Scripture focus:
John 8:3-5 (ESV)
.......................................................................................................................................
The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”
Worship focus: ..........................................................................
Worship Christ today as our Reconciliation, for while we were still enemies, we were reconciled to God through His death and Resurrection, and having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
summary prayer: ......................................................................
Father, You have given us life through Your Son. Through His sacrifice You made a way for us to have relationship with You. In turn, You send us into the world to tell others what You are doing and to demonstrate Your grace. Help me to be a living example of Your grace in who I am and what I do.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Happy Together | Growing Together as We Grow in Christ | Redefining Secondary Relationships | Romans 12:18
