O
ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: July 18 — Ice Cream Social
Now and then, we like to pull out some tables and chairs and enjoy some tasty ice cream after church. If you forgot to bring some, that’s OK! We have some extra just for you. Head over to the playground area (near The Rink), and spend a few minutes meeting new people. If you have children, pick them up and let them enjoy the treats as well as time with other kids. After the festivities, we could use some extra hands to pack up the tables and chairs, so stick around if you are able.
JULY 25 — Meet Our Summer Interns!
Every summer, God blesses us with amazing students from around the country to visit us and spend time at Northland. This year there are 15 interns serving in three departments, and we are very grateful for their lives and contribution to our community. Stay after service to enjoy a few minutes with the interns. More details in next week’s paper!
AUGUST 1 — Potluck and Service Project
On the first Sunday of the month, Northland generally celebrates the sacrament of Communion together in all the services. On these weekends, the Sunday night community also enjoys taking time to share a meal around the table, and this time is a great way to remember all of God’s provision and goodness to us. On Sunday, August 1, join us at 4:30 p.m., before service begins, in The Rink for this special time of fellowship and eating together. There are sign-up sheets at all the kiosks where you can write down what you are making and bringing, or you can e-mail Sarah Mattingly (sarah.mattingly@northlandchurch.net). In addition to eating together, we also will help with the Backpack Drive by organizing each backpack with the appropriate school tools. Stick around after service and help put the right items into each pack that will go out to children in elementary, middle and high school. This effort is helping both those in need right here in our local community and a special initiative taking place for those in need on Florida’s Gulf Coast. More details will follow in the coming weeks.

mountdoranews Join The Gathering! BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister
W
e in Mount Dora have a long-standing tradition: The Gathering. On the third Wednesday of each month, we come together as brothers and sisters in Christ to share a meal, to fellowship and to hear from the Lord. You are invited to come on July 21 at 6 p.m. for The Gathering! Bring your favorite dish to share, and build relationship with your church family. This is a great time for adults to interact with other adults and for kids to play with other kids. Youths can connect with their friends whom they haven’t seen since school let out. And the fellowship can all take place around and with the Lord Jesus. After dinner, we will gather in the sanctuary for teaching from the Word of God. We are wrapping up the summer Bible study series “Luke and Acts: Becoming Fishers of Men.” Come and join your church family at The Gathering!

Hear What God Has Done!

hrough Northland’s Distributed Journeys, folks have traveled to all corners of the world showing the love of Christ to adults and children alike. But the trip participants often find they are the ones who felt God’s love in a strong way. Below some past Distributed Journey participants share how God worked in them too! “They say we go on mission trips to minister to the children there, but I often find them ministering to us, the Americans, just as much. The atmosphere there is so happy, even in their poverty they’re singing His praise. They have truly inspired me in my relationship with Christ as well as many other members of my team. I may have to leave the Dominican Republic physically, but I will never, ever leave it emotionally.” — Emilee Scott (ninth grade, Dominican Republic Distributed Journey) “God worked in me by showing me that people don’t dress the same as we do, and don’t have the same things as we do, but their passion for God is enormous. Also, by being a servant for God, I was able to help build a church for a community that needed it, and so that others who don’t know Christ can come and learn about Him.” — Jesse Mingalone (11 years old, Dominican Republic Distributed Journey)
“If I were to summarize the Brazil trip into a few sentences, I’d have to say that the trip was life-changing in many ways. It was amazing to see how content people were with so little. It puts it into perspective that to have a happy life, material things don’t really matter; it’s your relationship with Jesus that makes all the difference. Partner Spotlight: Pathways to Care BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service
T
hroughout the year, Northland partners with a number of organizations in the community. The goal is to share God’s love with others through service and to provide for the needs of our local community. This week we highlight one of those partners, Pathways to Care. Pathways to Care is a 40-bed not-for-profit respite center dedicated to providing health, housing and hope to Central Florida’s most vulnerable homeless. The center provides short-term recuperative care and support services for homeless adults in need of temporary housing in order to recover from an acute medical illness or injury. Pathways to Care’s overall goal is to support its residents to achieve greater health, self-sufficiency and housing stability. The many volunteer opportunities include administrative/clerical work (including data entry, mailing, copying, etc.), event coordination/assistance, financial planning, job training, painting and gardening. In addition, Northland sends a group of volunteers once a month to cook meals at the facility. What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? To answer that, we must know who Jesus is and what He has done. Jesus is God. God left His perfect throne in Heaven to be born in Bethlehem and raised in Nazareth. Jesus ministered to huge crowds in Galilee. Later, He died on a cross in Jerusalem to take the punishment for our sins, so that whoever believes in Him will have life forever close with God. Jesus made peace between God and man. Co-op Encourages Kids to Explore, Learn, Grow By PAM ANDERSON Director of Northland’s Early Learning Center
T
he Northland Early Learning Center is a weekday school that has been a part of Northland for more than 25 years. Begun by a group of mothers with young children who were looking for connection, support and child care, the program has grown into a state-licensed preschool/ kindergarten program. Serving nearly 100 families, the Co-op, as it is affectionately called, offers a hands-on, discovery-based environment where children are encouraged to explore, learn and grow. The Co-op’s curriculum is centered on Scripture, and its teachers love what they do! Children as young as 18 months can participate in our Mother’s Morning Out, a one-morning-perweek class for our littlest friends. Two-year-olds can attend two mornings per week, and 3-yearolds have the option of attending two or three days each week. The prekindergarten classes meet either three or four days each week. All classes meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the exception of kindergarten classes. Parents of 2-year-olds through kids in prekindergarten are required to serve as the
helper mom or dad in a classroom one time per month. Each parent has the opportunity to work alongside one of our teachers and provide a great experience for the children in the classroom. All parents agree that this is one of the best parts of our program. Educators have long known that parent participation in children’s education pays dividends not only in student achievement, but in so many other ways. By helping in the classroom, parents really get to know their child’s teacher, the curriculum and the other children in the class. The children look forward to the day it is their mother or father’s turn to help. We would love to have your family join us this fall. Senior Fellowship
N
orthland’s seniors have a reputation … for serving faithfully, knowing how to have fun, and for consistently collecting the most delicious fare ever found in one place at their monthly luncheons! Following Acts 2:42, Northland’s seniors meet monthly for food, fellowship and prayer. Group responsibilities and costs are shared, from the official roles to the decorating, monthly phone calls and setup. When gathering to eat together, each participant also brings a contribution of a nonperishable food item for Northland’s food pantry, which they keep organized. Jack Kaufman, the current leader, has been involved in leadership with the seniors group for more than 17 years. He recalls coming in one day to help stock the food pantry. A woman came in requesting food and brought her dog. Someone had told her Northland might be able to help her. He talked with her, and they prayed. When he went to the pantry to find some groceries to send with her, he saw something he had never seen in the four years he had been working with the pantry. It was a can of dog food, provided for just an occasion.

e all have a longing for relationships. This longing reflects that we bear the image of God, who is relational. There is one God in three persons, all in perfect relationship to one another and in one another. What a privilege that before the foundation of the world, God wanted to share intimate joy with each of us. James Li, Northland’s director of student ministries, recently competed in the International Sport Karate Association World Championships. He went on to win the 2010 self-defense title — he also worked to win hearts for Christ, passing out testimony cards and sharing his faith with fans and other competitors. LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner.
