Happy Together

... growing together as we grow in Christ

Redefining Secondary Relationships A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER

“ Peacemakers are people who breathe grace. They draw continually on the goodness and power of Jesus Christ, and then they bring his love, mercy, forgiveness, strength, and wisdom to the conflicts of daily life. God delights to breathe His grace through peacemakers and use them to dissipate anger, improve understanding, promote justice, and

encourage repentance and reconciliation …”

–Excerpt from The Peacemaker, by Ken Sande

Welcome to Northland on Sunday Nights! sean cooper Northland on Sunday Nights Site Minister

O

ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sundaynights) • E-mail (Receive a weekly update. Sign up by e-mailing sean. cooper@northlandchurch.net.)

UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: July 18 — Ice Cream Social

Now and then, we like to pull out some tables and chairs and enjoy some tasty ice cream after church. If you forgot to bring some, that’s OK! We have some extra just for you. Head over to the playground area (near The Rink), and spend a few minutes meeting new people. If you have children, pick them up and let them enjoy the treats as well as time with other kids. After the festivities, we could use some extra hands to pack up the tables and chairs, so stick around if you are able.

JULY 25 — Meet Our Summer Interns!

Every summer, God blesses us with amazing students from around the country to visit us and spend time at Northland. This year there are 15 interns serving in three departments, and we are very grateful for their lives and contribution to our community. Stay after service to enjoy a few minutes with the interns. More details in next week’s paper!

AUGUST 1 — Potluck and Service Project

On the first Sunday of the month, Northland generally celebrates the sacrament of Communion together in all the services. On these weekends, the Sunday night community also enjoys taking time to share a meal around the table, and this time is a great way to remember all of God’s provision and goodness to us. On Sunday, August 1, join us at 4:30 p.m., before service begins, in The Rink for this special time of fellowship and eating together. There are sign-up sheets at all the kiosks where you can write down what you are making and bringing, or you can e-mail Sarah Mattingly (sarah.mattingly@northlandchurch.net). In addition to eating together, we also will help with the Backpack Drive by organizing each backpack with the appropriate school tools. Stick around after service and help put the right items into each pack that will go out to children in elementary, middle and high school. This effort is helping both those in need right here in our local community and a special initiative taking place for those in need on Florida’s Gulf Coast. More details will follow in the coming weeks.

e in Mount Dora have a long-standing tradition: The Gathering. On the third Wednesday of each month, we come together as brothers and sisters in Christ to share a meal, to fellowship and to hear from the Lord. You are invited to come on July 21 at 6 p.m. for The Gathering! Bring your favorite dish to share, and build relationship with your church family. This is a great time for adults to interact with other adults and for kids to play with other kids. Youths can connect with their friends whom they haven’t seen since school let out. And the fellowship can all take place around and with the Lord Jesus. After dinner, we will gather in the sanctuary for teaching from the Word of God. We are wrapping up the summer Bible study series “Luke and Acts: Becoming Fishers of Men.” Come and join your church family at The Gathering!

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another— and all the more as you see the Day approaching. — Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)

odos anhelamos relacionarnos. Hear What God Has Done!

Recaps from recent Distributed Journeys

T

hrough Northland’s Distributed Journeys, folks have traveled to all corners of the world showing the love of Christ to adults and children alike. But the trip participants often find they are the ones who felt God’s love in a strong way. Below some past Distributed Journey participants share how God worked in them too! “They say we go on mission trips to minister to the children there, but I often find them ministering to us, the Americans, just as much. The atmosphere there is so happy, even in their poverty they’re singing His praise. They have truly inspired me in my relationship with Christ as well as many other members of my team. I may have to leave the Dominican Republic physically, but I will never, ever leave it emotionally.” — Emilee Scott (ninth grade, Dominican Republic Distributed Journey) “God worked in me by showing me that people don’t dress the same as we do, and don’t have the same things as we do, but their passion for God is enormous. Also, by being a servant for God, I was able to help build a church for a community that needed it, and so that others who don’t know Christ can come and learn about Him.” — Jesse Mingalone (11 years old, Dominican Republic Distributed Journey)

“If I were to summarize the Brazil trip into a few sentences, I’d have to say that the trip was life-changing in many ways. It was amazing to see how content people were with so little. It puts it into perspective that to have a happy life, material things don’t really matter; it’s your relationship with Jesus that makes all the difference. I returned to the United States feeling privileged to have spent time with such wonderful people.” — Harry Hewett (Brazil Distributed Journey) “It was beautiful to look into these eyes of many adorable children and see so many colors, cultures, stories, languages and faiths in one place. Their ability to open up their hearts and love our team so well demonstrated to me Christ’s unstoppable love. They are precious and beautiful, and need someone to communicate that to them constantly.” — Tamra J. Rich (Georgia Refugee Camp Distributed Journey) “I saw God work in that place. He’s more alive there than the plants and animals themselves. A rusty 90-foot medical boat carried us with His Spirit to people with little more than the shirts on their backs. The plans He has for His Kingdom are so uplifting and humbling.” — Andrew Willis (Brazil Distributed Journey) “Brazil taught me a lot about faith – to trust God to shine through me when I don’t feel equipped or prepared, to have faith that He can do miraculous things with ease. God used one woman’s testimony to encourage me to try to go on another Distributed Journey, even though it was last minute. It was tough having nothing I could do to bring the money in, but God brought it in within eight days and showed me He can do things I think are impossible.” — Taryn Moorhead (Brazil Distributed Journey) “As co-leader of this team, God stretched me as a person. I do not consider myself gifted in administration, and I learned new things and was pushed out of my comfort zone. What was so cool about the Clarkston experience is that we were serving in a multicultural community with 20 nations being represented. We were to share the love of Christ through action. Watching our team form bonds and share the love of Jesus unfolded each day. New friendships were made that will last a lifetime!” — Irene Williamson (Georgia, Refugee Camp Distributed Journey)

Partner Spotlight: Pathways to Care BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service

T

hroughout the year, Northland partners with a number of organizations in the community. The goal is to share God’s love with others through service and to provide for the needs of our local community. This week we highlight one of those partners, Pathways to Care. Pathways to Care is a 40-bed not-for-profit respite center dedicated to providing health, housing and hope to Central Florida’s most vulnerable homeless. The center provides short-term recuperative care and support services for homeless adults in need of temporary housing in order to recover from an acute medical illness or injury. Pathways to Care’s overall goal is to support its residents to achieve greater health, self-sufficiency and housing stability. The many volunteer opportunities include administrative/clerical work (including data entry, mailing, copying, etc.), event coordination/assistance, financial planning, job training, painting and gardening. In addition, Northland sends a group of volunteers once a month to cook meals at the facility. For more information about Pathways to Care or to learn about opportunities to serve there, visit the center at 430 Plumosa Ave., Casselberry, or www. pathwaystocare.org, or contact its volunteer coordinator (407-388-0245). For more information about volunteering with the Northland Serve Team that visits the center monthly to cook meals, visit www.northlandchurch.net/serve/local. Our next serve date there is July 24, so sign up now!

Answer: DISCIPLES

Following Christ Matthew 16:24

What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? To answer that, we must know who Jesus is and what He has done. Jesus is God. God left His perfect throne in Heaven to be born in Bethlehem and raised in Nazareth. Jesus ministered to huge crowds in Galilee. Later, He died on a cross in Jerusalem to take the punishment for our sins, so that whoever believes in Him will have life forever close with God. Jesus made peace between God and man. Three days after He died on the cross, Jesus rose from the dead, and now sits upon His throne in Heaven. One day He will return to earth to gather all who believe in Him as their Savior to be close with God.

Exactly!

Co-op Encourages Kids to Explore, Learn, Grow By PAM ANDERSON Director of Northland’s Early Learning Center

T

he Northland Early Learning Center is a weekday school that has been a part of Northland for more than 25 years. Begun by a group of mothers with young children who were looking for connection, support and child care, the program has grown into a state-licensed preschool/ kindergarten program. Serving nearly 100 families, the Co-op, as it is affectionately called, offers a hands-on, discovery-based environment where children are encouraged to explore, learn and grow. The Co-op’s curriculum is centered on Scripture, and its teachers love what they do! Children as young as 18 months can participate in our Mother’s Morning Out, a one-morning-perweek class for our littlest friends. Two-year-olds can attend two mornings per week, and 3-yearolds have the option of attending two or three days each week. The prekindergarten classes meet either three or four days each week. All classes meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the exception of kindergarten classes. Parents of 2-year-olds through kids in prekindergarten are required to serve as the

helper mom or dad in a classroom one time per month. Each parent has the opportunity to work alongside one of our teachers and provide a great experience for the children in the classroom. All parents agree that this is one of the best parts of our program. Educators have long known that parent participation in children’s education pays dividends not only in student achievement, but in so many other ways. By helping in the classroom, parents really get to know their child’s teacher, the curriculum and the other children in the class. The children look forward to the day it is their mother or father’s turn to help. We would love to have your family join us this fall. Don’t delay; give Pam Anderson a call this week (407-949-7179) or check out the Co-op website (www.northlandcoop.net). There are only a few spots left.

Great explorers, Sarah and Austin.

Summer Reading from Pastor Dan Lacich While summer can be a difficult time to participate in a class or join a group, with all the unpredictable schedules and occasional travels, it is the perfect time to catch up on reading. Here are some recommendations from Pastor Dan Lacich, available in the Northland Bookstore, that you might check out:

Pure Pleasure: Why Do Christians Feel So Bad About Feeling Good?, by Gary Thomas Discover the power of guilt-free pleasure. Pleasure is a good thing. It’s a powerful force that feeds your relationships, helps protect your spiritual integrity and brings delight to our heavenly Father. Pleasure isn’t something Christians should fear, shun or disparage; it’s something we should learn to cultivate in our lives. Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church, by N.T. Wright Wright, one of the greatest, and certainly most prolific, Bible scholars in the world, will touch a nerve with this book. What happens when we die? How should we think about heaven, hell, purgatory and eternal life? Wright critiques the views of heaven that have become regnant in Western culture. Free Book, by Brian Tome Maybe you’re not as free as you think you are. Even worse, maybe you have been duped into believing that a “balanced” life is the key to happiness, or that a relationship with God is about layering on rules and restrictions. Tome is fanatical about freedom. Let this book help you find what is holding you back from the full-on freedom God intends for you.

Girls will be girls.

The hallways and classrooms are decorated to help the children remember their Bible stories.

Senior Fellowship

N

orthland’s seniors have a reputation … for serving faithfully, knowing how to have fun, and for consistently collecting the most delicious fare ever found in one place at their monthly luncheons! Following Acts 2:42, Northland’s seniors meet monthly for food, fellowship and prayer. Group responsibilities and costs are shared, from the official roles to the decorating, monthly phone calls and setup. When gathering to eat together, each participant also brings a contribution of a nonperishable food item for Northland’s food pantry, which they keep organized. Jack Kaufman, the current leader, has been involved in leadership with the seniors group for more than 17 years. He recalls coming in one day to help stock the food pantry. A woman came in requesting food and brought her dog. Someone had told her Northland might be able to help her. He talked with her, and they prayed. When he went to the pantry to find some groceries to send with her, he saw something he had never seen in the four years he had been working with the pantry. It was a can of dog food, provided for just an occasion.

If you are 60 or older, join this charming group for one of these upcoming events in the fellowship hall of the Student Ministries and Care Center at the Longwood site: • Sing-along — July 21, 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. • Old Time Radio — August 18, 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Details: Cassie Small (407-834-5203 or Cassandra.543@ juno.com)

The seniors group knows how to have a good time serving the Lord.

Untamed: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship, by Alan Hirsch and Debra Hirsch Discipleship is costly. Are we willing to critique and even challenge much we’ve been taught for the sake of the Kingdom? For this is the radical nature of the discipleship to which Jesus calls us. In this provocative and compelling book, internationally known missiologists Alan and Debra Hirsch overthrow culturized understandings of theology and culture, and cast a vision for a distinctly mission-shaped way of living the Christian life. The Dangerous Act of Worship: Living God’s Call to Justice, by Mark Labberton Worship is the dangerous act of waking up to God and God’s purposes in the world. But something has gone wrong with our worship. Too often worship has become a place of safety and complacency, a narrowly private experience in which solitary individuals express their personal adoration. Even when we gather corporately, we often close our eyes to those around us, focusing on God but ignoring our neighbor. But true biblical worship does not merely point us upward — it should turn us outward as well. In this prophetic wakeup call for the contemporary church, Pastor Labberton reconnects Christian worship with biblical justice.

(English translation from page 5.)

Getting, Staying Connected BY Mike Fernández Spanish Ministry Leader

W

e all have a longing for relationships. This longing reflects that we bear the image of God, who is relational. There is one God in three persons, all in perfect relationship to one another and in one another. What a privilege that before the foundation of the world, God wanted to share intimate joy with each of us. As God builds His Kingdom with each of us, let’s enjoy and be aware of the gift of fellowship and relationships along with the good work He has prepared and is preparing us to do. Isaiah 43:19 says, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; … do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” (ESV). God is in the business of renewing, redeeming and restoring. See what He is doing that is new in your life and in our community together. We have more ways than ever to be connected and stay connected. Let’s continue to get to know one another by meeting at church, but also through social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. I want to thank those who have already joined the Facebook page Northland Espanol to stay connected, and see what “new thing” He is doing with us. Share your story with us. >>> www.facebook.com/northlandespanol

Hear … (Continued from page 6).

“I saw the power of our prayers evident in our children’s hearts as they opened up to us and to Jesus. This journey showed me the importance of specific prayer, which will now be a scheduled event in my daily life. There are very few things that will take precedence over my prayer time.” — Sarah Huaman (Ukraine Distributed Journey)

Senny Luu with five orphans after a chalk war!

“My Distributed Journey experience transformed my everyday life! I now do devotions and read my Bible daily, which I never did before! I saw God working through me and my teammates during the time we were with the kids, and I saw this new light shine through the kids when they realized that God is their hope!” — Hannah Bosgraaf (Ukraine Distributed Journey) “It’s one of the best experiences in the world when you know God is using you! The day before we left, I laid the Gospel out to a few of the orphans to whom I became close. As we were discussing Pasha’s doubts, he then laughed and said, “Last night, I was praying, ‘Please help me believe in You.’ I believe this is an answer to my prayer, and now, I believe.” Ahh. There is nothing like this feeling, knowing there is another person you love who is now a member of God’s Kingdom! (Please pray for Pasha, a new Christian; Olesya; Tolic; Leeanna, a new Christian; Sasha; Vova; Natasha; Victoria; Nina; Bogdan; Marina; Yuroslava; and many more.) — Laurie Copeland (Ukraine Distributed Journey)

The winning team of the soccer tournament put on in Jamaica was wearing Northland t-shirts!

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
