ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways:

On Sunday, August 1, join us at 4:30 p.m., before service begins, in The Rink for this special time of fellowship and eating together. In addition to eating together, we also will help with the Backpack Drive by organizing each backpack with the appropriate school tools. Stick around after service and help put the right items into each pack that will go out to children in elementary, middle and high school. This effort is helping both those in need right here in our local community and a special initiative taking place for those in need on Florida’s Gulf Coast. More details next weekend.

Hospitality JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

A

s we continue to unpack what it means to love God and others, I am reminded of the power of hospitality.

Hospitality is a gesture of love to others—more important, though, it is our response to God ... being obedient to Him by being known as men and women of love. And loving others is only possible because He loved us first!

We have had a team of people come together recently to think about the gift of hospitality, led by our own Cyndi Lott.

Wow! They are right on track. Their first meeting was not too long ago, and during that meeting they remembered that this is not just about bagels, decorations or crafts. This is about something much more important.

Their mission statement as a ministry makes it all very clear: “Lovingly serve our neighbors, our community and our church family by connecting them to Christ and to one another through acts of hospitality.” That night Cyndi read from an article published online through Revive Our Hearts Ministry, taken from an interview with Leslie Basham and Nancy Leigh De Moss that aired on December 3, 2002, called “The Heart of Hospitality: Jesus the Ultimate Host.” This week’s and next week’s articles will be from that interview because they really say it best.

Here’s what Leslie Basham had to say about hospitality: “As you read the Book of Romans, you realize that the first several chapters are Paul talking about some pretty heavy doctrinal matters. He’s talking about the Gospel of Christ.

“Then as he comes to the second half of the Book of Romans he starts saying, ‘How does this affect the way that we live?’ When we come to chapter 12 of Romans, Paul gives many practical exhortations about what it means to live out the Gospel of Christ. In verse 10 of Romans 12, Paul says, ‘Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, having received what you have in Christ, now love one another.’ Then he goes on to say ‘pursuing hospitality.’”

“What does it mean to be hospitable? The word hospitality in the New Testament comes from two Greek words. The first word means love and the second word means strangers. It’s a word that means love of strangers.

“The dictionary talks about hospitality as giving a friendly welcome and kind or generous treatment offered to guests or strangers. Another dictionary defines hospitality this way, ‘The act of receiving and entertaining strangers or guests without reward and with kind and generous liberality, to be friendly, welcoming, kind and generous to guests or strangers.’

“Now when I think of the word hospitality there are some other similar words that come to mind, words like hospital. And I wonder, did these words have anything in common?”

Next week we will look at the rest of the article and some other words that will shed light on our better understanding of what it means to us to be hospitable.

his summer, Northland has the privilege of hosting 14 student interns in the areas of worship, service and student ministries. In line with Northland’s core value of intergenerational leadership, this program offers students an opportunity to gain valuable skills and ministry experience as they serve alongside Northland staff and volunteers. The unique gifts and perspectives that each student brings to his or her daily tasks is a vibrant reflection of the distributed church in action.

Building a Community of Care

Online tool helps Northland, others meet needs.

R

esource Point began as a vision to help bring people in our community together and to allow for each individual in need to have a chance to gain self-sufficiency in their lives. This vision cannot be approached without understanding that we need each other to understand and deploy such a venture.

For the past few years, Northland, A Church Distributed has worked with the community to build Resource Point, a web-based tool which uses technology to provide case management and a resource directory for local government, non-profit and faith-based organizations and churches.

Resource Point is a webbased tool that will allow its partners to take a holistic approach to meeting the needs of its community and beyond.

Wherever you are, you will be able to connect resources to those in need and have the ability to meet those needs through connected collaborating agencies and organizations. This network of organizations and agencies will essentially work hand-in-hand in the process of providing for those in need.

Slyvia D. Izquierdo, administrative assistant at Rescue Outreach Mission, knows who to thank for recent donations.

God has used this tool to help reach people in their time of need and to match that need with resources and services in our community to help change lives.

Recently we were able to see this as a hotel struggled with what to do with their surplus of new bed linens. Searching online through Resource Point, the connection was made with four organizations that desperately needed bed linens.

A local mission even spoke of how they had been faithfully praying for God to provide sheets for their transitional home.

Through this donation, homeless families now have beautiful new sheets for their beds.

It isn’t only about resources. Resource Point is also a case management tool that allows local churches and organizations to collaborate and care for individuals in need together. A family that had no place to stay for Christmas found funding for a hotel stay from a church while awaiting the process of receiving rental assistance with another non-profit organization. This teamwork of community to care for individuals in need is a perfect example of how Resource Point can be used to advocate and serve those who need help.

God has brought so many wonderful opportunities to Resource Point.

Northland’s LifeHope team uses Resource Point each and every day to serve people in need and to help identify resources in our area to assist them.

A Seminole County pilot program called Pathways to Home is using Resource Point to collaborate in our community to help homeless families to become self-sufficient and provide a home for their families. Currently, churches in our community are working together to become Stations of Hope for those returning to society from incarceration. Using Resource Point, mentors will help to care and assist these individuals in their transition.

By visiting the website (www.resourcepoint.org) our community at large can begin to explore these opportunities to serve by volunteering at various organizations, giving donations or finding resources for yourself or your family.

Do you have a heart for this ministry? You can also volunteer with us at Resource Point. We have many needs including data entry of local providers and resources in our area. Partner Spotlight: HOPE Foundation BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service

T

hroughout the year Northland partners with several local organizations to serve our local community. This week I would like to feature one specific organization, HOPE Foundation.

HOPE Foundation’s mission is to reduce and end the tragedy of homelessness among families throughout all of Central Florida. They strive to address the problems of the working poor and homeless in a comprehensive, coordinated, and strategic fashion and to educate and change the way people think about the poor and homelessness in a way that compels them to action.

Some of the initiatives that they are working to make accessible to families in crisis are: basic shelter, access to food and other basic human needs, life skills training and educational programs that include apprenticeships and job placement so that people can successfully reenter the workforce, transportation, health services, medical and dental services, and many others.

Many volunteer opportunities are available at HOPE Foundation including working in the food pantry or thrift store and picking up various donations. A Reminder About the Backpack Drive

Just a reminder about our backpack drive next weekend July 31 through August 2. We will be collecting backpacks and school supplies throughout that weekend which will be distributed to children in need in our local community as well as to those children in Louisiana who’s families have been affected by the oil spill.

To participate, simply fill an age appropriate backpack with items from the list below. If you prefer to just purchase supplies we will gladly accept those donations as well. Then, at the Longwood site, bring your backpack and/or supplies with you to church during the collection weekend and drop them off in the welcome center which is located within the main sanctuary lobby. There will be a team of volunteers there to collect your donations. At the distributed sites, you will be instructed on what to do at your respective sites.

Northland’s Marriage Preparation Class Is a wedding in your very near future?

The course covers such topics as the roles and responsibilities of marriage partners, finances, God’s plan and purpose for marriage, and blended families. This class is required for any couple seeking to be married by a Northland minister or at one of our sites.

ACCESS MINISTRIES While meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities has always been important to our church, we are working on expanding the programs and services offered. LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.”

Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.

It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” The LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. The LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language.

And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.
