Welcome to Northland on Sunday Nights! sean cooper Northland on Sunday Nights Site Minister

O

ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

AUGUST 8 — Seminole County Jail Ministry

Stick around after service to hear about the amazing ministry taking place at the Seminole County Jail. The Northland team that facilitates this great outreach will join us in the Welcome Center and give a brief overview of what is taking place as well as offer practical ways you can pray for the ministry and possibly get involved. This is an informal 15- to 20-minute gathering that will help you better connect with the Kingdom work taking place through both our online technology and faceto-face interaction here in our community.

Interns Jen and Bryan shared their views with some visitors.

Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sundaynights)

UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: AUGUST 1 — Service Project

As you know, all weekend Northlanders have brought backpacks and school supplies for our annual backpack drive. Tonight, the Sunday night community will assist in packing each backpack with the appropriate school supplies for specific ages, and we need your help! After the service, join us in the foyer to prepare these backpacks, most of which will ship to organizations Monday, August 2. If you have children, pick them up first and bring them along. Depending on how many people can stay and serve, this may take anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes, so join us for as long as you are able. Meet new people and serve alongside them in this practical way to help out our community!

Interns Kaitlyn and Natalie chat with a congregant.

Intern Colin enjoyed meeting congregants one-on-one.

mountdoranews Bless a Child, Serve the Lord

Donate backpacks, supplies in Mount Dora. BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

T

he annual backpack ministry event is under way. Between now and Sunday, August 15, buy a backpack, fill it with school supplies, and bring it to Northland at Mount Dora on Sunday mornings. This is the sixth year in a row that the Mount Dora family has had this opportunity to give back to our community. Every backpack that you donate will go to a child who might otherwise do without such a fun and encouraging piece of school “gear.” This ministry has profound spiritual impact. Certainly, each child will be more adequately prepared to perform better in school because of your donation – and that is a great thing. But the deeper blessing is twofold: The child is blessed, and Jesus is served. In Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus said: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something

to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?” The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” When a Christian meets a need, both the receiver and the Lord are ministered to! So if you can do it, buy a backpack, fill it with school supplies, and bring it to the Mount Dora site by August 15. Or get involved in sorting and delivering backpacks to hurting children. We’ll make sure your loving donation goes directly to a child in need in our community! Contact Darlene Velez (352-357-1713 or tvel1@aol.com) if you would like to help. oviedonews Hospitality, Part 2 JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

L

et’s keep moving through the interview from Revive Our Hearts Ministry with Leslie Basham and Nancy Leigh DeMoss that aired on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, called “The Heart of Hospitality: Jesus the Ultimate Host.” Please go to last week’s article or our blog post to get caught up. The interview is at a break where Nancy Leigh DeMoss just defined the word “hospitality” from the two Greek words for love and stranger. She was just about to look at some other words that are related to it. Again, the reason we are reading through this is because of the newly formed Northland at Oviedo hospitality team, which you can be a part of by contacting Cyndi Lott (cyndi.lott@ northlandchurch.net). Here is more from Nancy Leigh DeMoss: As I went back and studied them, I discovered that they did. For example, the word “hospital” in its original meaning was a place of shelter and rest for travelers, a charitable institution for providing and caring for the aged, the infirmed and the orphaned; a place where people are cared for. I’ve experienced that kind of ministry as a guest in people’s homes numbers of times over the years as they have brought me into their home at times when my spirit just desperately needed to be refreshed or strengthened or encouraged. I’ve found in other people’s homes a hospital, a place where their hospitality was ministering to my wounded spirit. I think of the word “hospice.” That’s another similar word. In the dictionary, it says that a hospice is a place of

THIS WEEK! Meet Us At The Movies!

shelter for travelers, a home for the sick or poor; a homelike facility to provide supportive care for terminally ill patients. It’s a place where care is provided for people who are desperately needy, and, as we have come to use the term today, a hospice is care for those who are terminally ill. Hospital, hospitality, hospice is a way of caring for those who are needy. But there’s another word that is at the root of all of those words. It’s the word “host” – someone who receives or entertains guests, someone who entertains another at his own house without reward. Now, there’s an interesting concept when we think of the word “host” that shows us how hospitality, being a gracious host or hostess, ties us into the gospel of Christ, because, you see, the word “host” can also mean a victim or a sacrifice. It’s applied to our Savior, who offered Himself for the sins of men. He is our Host. In fact, in our liturgical churches, when the Lord’s Supper is served, the wafer, the piece of bread, is called the host. It speaks of representing the body of Christ that is offered and consecrated and eaten. We partake of His body symbolically during the Christian ceremony of Communion. That says to me that Christian hospitality, being a godly host or hostess, takes us back to the cross. The cross is where Christ spread out and opened His arms, wide – He opened His arms wide to the world, and He said, “I welcome you. I receive you.” The cross is where Christ said, “I will die in your place so that I can be your Host. Welcome to My Father’s house; welcome home. You are invited to My Father’s house. I want you to come home with Me. I want you to live there with Me.” On the cross, He became our Host. Now He says to us, “Open your arms, open your heart, lay down your life, give up your life, be willing to open your heart and your home to receive others as I have received you.” He did it without hope of reward, and He said to us, “You do it whether you ever get rewarded for it or not.”

As He invites us to come and partake of Him, even as we partake of Communion, we are reminded of the hospitality of God, the Host that Christ is to us. Then we realize that we can be His representatives here on earth, opening our hearts, our arms and our homes to others and welcoming them to come with us into the home and heart of God. That is awesome to me and seen clearly in the ministry mission statement for this team: “Lovingly serve our neighbors, our community and church family by connecting them to Christ and to one another through acts of hospitality.” >>> www.facebook.com/northlandoviedo

westoaksnews Giving Love Away BY MARY ANN YOUNG West Oaks Site Coordinator

“ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” –Matthew 6:21 (NIV)

I

n our everyday lives, we are presented with many opportunities to share the love of Jesus. When we take advantage of those opportunities and give of our time, talent and treasure, we are giving our love to God’s children. As many people at West Oaks have seen, the impact can be great for His Kingdom.

TIME

Nothing is more precious to us than our time. Certainly, it is one of the things we often seem to not have enough of. We often hesitate to “get involved” because of the time and energy it will take from us. Yet our time is one of the most precious things we can give. There is a family (the Adamses) just getting connected to us at West Oaks. We met them because Bruce and Carol Rodda, also new to Northland, befriended them at the local Five Guys in MetroWest, where the husband works. As they got to know

each other better, Bruce came alongside them and began to help them learn more about how to manage their money. Bruce and Carol invited this couple and their children into life together with them and us. Larry Black is another who knows the importance of giving of his time. He spends every Tuesday at Matthew’s Hope, a ministry in Winter Garden that provides services for the homeless. He has been sharing with us the journey God has had him on as his regular involvement in the lives of our homeless neighbors – how they have become acquaintances and friends; how their lives are not that different from our own at the fundamental levels of food, shelter, clothing, meaningful work and a sense of belonging; how invisible they are to us, their fellow human beings. Larry is always challenging us by reminding us that “they will know we are Christians by our love.” May we continue to challenge one another to give freely of our time.

TALENT

Our unique talents are intended to be returned to God for His purposes and to be shared to encourage and build up the body of Christ. Betty McCoy has served on our worship team through our entire West Oaks history, for more than five years. Betty and her husband, Marty, live in the westernmost part of Orange County, where it snuggles up to Clermont. Her energy and commitment have blessed us every week as she is joined by our other talented musicians for worship. Thursday night rehearsal, Sunday morning rehearsal, singing the music over and over again in the car all week – you all know we sing some pretty complicated music. Hmm, sounds like a commitment of time and talent.

Lou Amadori is a behind-the-scenes kind of guy. For these same five years, he has been on site leading and/or doing the setup and takedown almost every week. He doesn’t miss a detail. He’s quiet and methodical, and he serves out of a deep commitment to make Northland happen out here in our community. And we are blessed by that gift of his talent and time. May we encourage and build one another up by pouring out our talents for God’s glory and purposes.

TREASURE

Money. Yikes. Money can consume so much of our thinking, yet we don’t like to talk about it much. What to give, what to keep, what to spend …. God gives us resources so we can provide others with resources. In God’s economy, there are no recessions, only lessons. Our West Oaks family has not been without its share of struggles, yet when God puts a need in front of these people, they respond. Sometimes the need is a meal, a ride, clothing, furniture or groceries. Sometimes it’s something less tangible but way more powerful, like a prayer. Sometimes it’s our friend Darlene loading up a baby crib in the 100-degree heat to deliver on her way home from worship. Sometimes it’s money. For the family we talked about earlier, the congregation at West Oaks decided to take a love offering, without their knowledge or request. Fifteen of our 30 families got involved, and Bruce shared the money with the family. Last week, as we prepared to join all of you for worship, the Adamses came up to be a part of our welcome and to say thank you to Jesus as we are starting the series “Love One and Others.” So we got to share in blessing others with the gift of our treasure. May we be ever more generous with that with which we have been entrusted.

Meet the New Director of Life Hope Rachel Ballantyne By GUS DAVIES Pastor

L

ifeHope, Northland’s benevolence ministry, has a new director, Rachel Ballantyne. LifeHope serves people in need in our church family and community with the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. As many of you know, this is an area of immense need. In collaboration with several teams, LifeHope has grown significantly in how it serves those God brings its way. While LifeHope has grown, the need grows, especially in our current economic situation. Those at LifeHope are thankful to God for bringing them Rachel, who, having been a probation officer for many years, brings a unique blend of talent, experience and perspective to expand our capacity and increase our effectiveness. They are delighted that Rachel has joined the LifeHope team and look forward to seeing how God will use her passion for serving those in need and guiding them to spiritual growth and to the many opportunities for them to serve as well. Please welcome Rachel! In the meantime, to help us get to know her better, Rachel, a Lake Mary resident who has attended Northland for five years, shares more about herself below. What do your ministry responsibilities include? Serving those in need while connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community. In LifeHope, we are continually seeking partnerships with local organizations to better meet the needs of our congregants as well as our Christian community. In LifeHope, our goal is to empower and equip people to live the life that God has for them. What difference do you hope to make in the community? My hope is that by serving people in the community through the LifeHope ministry, people who might not yet know God will come to desire a relationship with Him. For the Christian community that we serve, it is my hope that they will be drawn nearer to Christ. My desire is to see everyone who has been served through LifeHope, serving others with the compassion of Jesus Christ.

that day after hearing the Word. As nervous as I was, I built up the courage to take my Bible to my parents’ home and explain to them that I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Mom wouldn’t be so hard, but dad – that is another story. I was scared that he would disown me. But guess what? He didn’t. He longed to hear more, talked to my former pastor several times, and went to church with my mom. And it didn’t take long before they were saved as well. How is Christ transforming your life? Since the day I was saved, He has continued to transform my life. I look at life in a way that I never would have before I came to know and love Christ as my Savior. He is constantly transforming me and molding me to be the best mother, wife and servant that I can be. I desire to let Christ shine through all that I do. If you would have asked me six years ago if I would ever work in a church, I would have laughed. However, after being saved and moving to Florida, I remember thinking to myself that it would be so awesome to be able to work in a church. Well, God was all over that thought in my mind because here I am. I am amazed that I am here, working in my church, and I’m blessed. I can honestly say that I am so honored to be here. I am finally where I need to be. Why are you involved in ministering? I was saved for a reason, and I truly believe that it was to serve others. I believe that the Lord gave me a special gift of deep compassion when He saved me. I understand that all of the struggles that I went through were to bring me to Christ, and to open my heart to others who are struggling or are in pain. The compassion that I feel for people who are hurting, in pain, suffering or truly in need is something much deeper than I ever felt before I was saved. So often when I know someone is hurting, I cannot help but to cry because I want to take away the person’s pain. However, I know that the only one who can truly heal us is our Lord and Savior. I love sitting down with people, especially those who do not know Christ, and being able to explain to them how much God loves them and that they can turn all of their pain, hurt and troubles over to Him, and He will be their Comforter. What are your hobbies? My hobbies for now are running my son to all of his activities! I love going for walks, camping, swimming and just being outdoors. Family: I have been married to my husband, Nigel, for three years. My son Elijah is 11 years old, and Nigel adopted him last year, so Nigel is officially his daddy! We have a seven-month-old baby, Isaiah. And Nigel has two daughters, Nia, 7, and Reena, 4 (my beautiful stepdaughters), who live in St. Vincent. My parents, Jack and Linda Schectman, live down the road from us. My mom watches Isaiah for me while I am at work, and my dad volunteers with security at Northland.

What book has helped you most in your spiritual walk (in addition to the Bible)? That would be Yesterday, I Cried, by Iyanla Vanzant. It was one of the first books I read after I became saved. This book helped me through my process of healing. It was truly inspirational, and it was the beginning of my walk with Christ. It helped me through my own battles of pain and suffering by reading the pain she had gone through and understanding that I was not alone. It also helped me to understand more clearly that the pain was part of my testimony to becoming a Christian. How did you come to know Christ as your personal Savior? I was raised Jewish. When I went off to college, I had a child out of wedlock and went through some severe emotional turmoil. Fast-forward a couple of years …. My son and I moved into a new condo in San Diego, California, where a few of my neighbors also happened to be single mothers, but they were Christian. I was invited to a single mothers Bible study by them; however, I would only go if it was at someone’s home and not the church because I was Jewish. After attending the studies a few times and starting to build relationships with these women, I agreed to “try out” their church. I went into the church, and the rest is history. I was saved

Celebrate and Serve Night a Success BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service

R

ecently, Northland held its very first Celebrate and Serve Night. We celebrated the culmination of a week of hard work by many young artists and staff members at the Arts in Worship camp. During the week, the students developed their talents in the arts and applied them to worship, which they showcased in an amazing worship program titled “The Story.” After the program, the students, parents and community gathered alongside Kids Against Hunger to serve others and worship God by preparing more than 15,000 meals for those in need. Overall it was a fantastic evening and a great opportunity to experience the connection between worship and service. Thanks to everyone who came out for the event. I know I had a great time meeting and serving with many of you. I look forward to seeing you and serving others with you throughout the months ahead!

THE TRUE VINE

Go and Bear Fruit Galatians 5:22-23; John 15:5, 9, 12, 15-16

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing … As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love … My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. You are my friends if you do what I have commanded you … I have called you friends, for everything that I have learned from my Father I have made know to you. You did not choose Me but I chose you, to go and bear fruit — fruit that will last, and the Father will give you whatever you ask in My Name.

PeaceSeekers Teaches Biblical Approach to Handling Conflict

I

t was one of those husband-and-wife spats — you know, the kind that start out as a simple disagreement and then get heated. The wife was a teacher and had developed a tone and volume that could control a class of 30. The husband was an attorney, well-versed in how to argue and set a trap with leading questions. As the discussion grew into an argument, each side used his or her best skills to “win” the debate. As things were getting rough, the wife excused herself to use the restroom, and then returned to the verbal boxing event. It was as if both sides returned to their corners, planning their strategy for the next round. But this was no ordinary couple. The husband in this story was Ken Sande, president of Peacemaker Ministries and author of The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict (available in the Northland Bookstore), and his wife, one of the ministry’s best writers. Just as Corlette returned to the room, Ken heard a clear, convicting voice in his heart that said, “And how will those comments glorify God?”

Instantly, he lost all energy for the argument, and instead of attacking, he apologized. Instead of delivering a knockout punch, he confessed his sinful attitude, and what could easily have been a trying and difficult day became a day of joy and forgiveness, a day in which God was glorified. As Christians, we still so easily get tangled up in handling our differences the way the world does — where there is a winner and a loser. God’s Word teaches us to live in a radically different way from the rest of the world. Scripture teaches us that we can and should be handling conflict in a way that honors God and maintains positive relationships. Only then does anyone win. Learn the biblical approach to handling conflict and making a difference in your relationships by attending the PeaceSeekers class coming to Northland at Longwood September 5 to October 21. Study key verses and gain insights that you can use in everyday situations, and help others as well.

Food Fight for Freedom

Students get messy to benefit Rapha House. BY SHAYLYNN STONER Administrative Assistant, Student Ministries

O

ne of the main reasons I work in Student Ministries is because I believe that middle and high school students have the opportunity to dictate culture. The more they know about the heart of God and the world around them, the better equipped they are to serve. This past week, I witnessed more than 50 high school students hearing about modern-day slavery, Rapha House and how they could help rebuild broken lives. Rapha House is a home that takes in girls who have been trafficked in the sex trade. These girls are given a chance to start fresh. They are taught life skills and trades, and, most importantly, are introduced to a relationship with their Creator, who loves them unconditionally. Currently, there is only one Rapha House in the world, but the work this house is doing is too needed to be limited to one house. So what does all of that have to do with students paying to be covered in smelly food, you ask? The funds from this year’s food fight are going to Rapha House. All the food for the food fight was expired and donated, some from individuals, some from area stores, and some from a food pantry. We were very excited this year that a couple of grocery stores donated gift cards so the food pantry’s expired food could be replaced with non-expired food that will better serve the pantry’s specific needs. If you had the “privilege” of smelling any of the food that was used, then you know firsthand why it was food fight material. The food fight was able to restock a food pantry with more than $50 worth of canned goods, raise more than $280 for Rapha House, and, for a reason that still escapes me, fulfill the foodflinging desires of more than 50 high school students. Be looking next week for a video during service that features the high school small group that has been working hard to raise awareness of Rapha House. Details: Sara Hall (sarahallph@gmail.com)

Herb McCormick, one of Northland’s 2,000 online worshipers and a corporate pilot, hands a backpack filled with school supplies to online minister Nathan Clark. Herb flew in from his home in Port Orange earlier this week to deliver the backpack for this weekend’s drive.

More than 50 students listened to stories about modern-day slavery and how they could make a difference by helping raise awareness.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend:

Elder Fayez Ishak from Kasr El Dobara Church, Cairo Egypt

Situated in Cairo, the largest city in Africa and the “gateway to the Middle East”, Kasr El Dobara is the largest Protestant church in the Arabic-speaking world. They believe that God has uniquely situated and blessed them so they can be a blessing to their city and country, the Middle East and North Africa. Their tangible expressions of love for their neighbors inspire us. Their obedience in the face of opposition challenges us. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT OUR GLOBAL PARTNERS, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET/SERVE/.

Scripture focus: John 15:16 (NIV)

Worship focus:

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit — fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever

Worship Christ today as the Giver of Life. He is the vine. We are the branches. If we abide in Him, we will bear fruit. (John 15:4)

you ask in my name.

summary prayer: Almighty God, we humbly ask you to make us like trees planted by the water, that we may bring forth fruit. Forgive us our past offenses, sanctify us through Your Word, and direct all that we should be in the future, for Christ’s sake. Amen. (Adapted from The Worship Source Book, Prayers of Confession, #38)
