ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: AUGUST 8 — Seminole County Jail Ministry

Stick around after service to hear about the amazing ministry taking place at the Seminole County Jail. The Northland team that facilitates this great outreach will join us in the Welcome Center and give a brief overview of what is taking place as well as offer practical ways you can pray for the ministry and possibly get involved. This is an informal 15- to 20-minute gathering that will help you better connect with the Kingdom work taking place through both our online technology and faceto-face interaction here in our community.

mountdoranews ‘And When You Pray ...’ BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

D

o you pray? Communication anchors any relationship. Are you conversing with God? In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches us how to pray. He begins by telling us how not to pray: “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men” (v. 5, NIV) and, “When you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words” (v. 7). Once that’s out of the way, He lovingly instructs us: “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name … ’” (v. 9). Our prayer language should begin with praises to God. Tell Him He is awesome, amazing, powerful, loving. Acknowledge who He is. The Bible continues: “ … your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (v. 10). Ask God to work in and

through your life. Ask Him to move on behalf of others. Petition Him to rise up and show the world how incredible He is. Next, the Bible says, “Give us today our daily bread” (v. 11). Share your needs with God. Let Him know all of your requests. As 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Verse 12 says, “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Take time to confess your sins to Him. Our sins are bricks in a wall of offense, and confession takes down that wall, brick by brick. Forgive those who have hurt you as your response to His great grace. Then, in verse 13, the Bible says, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Ask God to protect you from sinning. Ask Him to shield you from the flesh inside, the world around and the devil in front. At the Northland at Mount Dora prayer group, the Holy Spirit has us in the school of prayer. We gather each Wednesday evening to learn to seek the Lord and to do it together. Some of us are brand new to prayer. Others have been speaking to God for many years. Some pray out loud, and others pray silently in their minds. But we seek Him together. Why don’t you come and be a part? We meet at 7 p.m. in the Youth Room. Child care is available. Bring your praise reports as well as your burdens. Let’s seek God together!

Secret Church This Fall JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

W

e were recently blessed by the preaching from elder Fayez through a partner church relationship in Egypt. What an amazing message and time we had talking about how we can respond right here, right now. We talked about many gatherings throughout the Oviedo community this fall, studying God’s Word in a unique way that connects each other, God and the church around the world, like Kasr El Dobara in Egypt. It’s called Secret Church. Let me explain what this is and why we are encouraging everyone in Oviedo/East Orlando to participate. First, remember, we are Northland, A Church Distributed – distributed across Central Florida and the whole world. One of the things Maggie and I have been stretched by is the consistent refocus not on ourselves, but on the church around the world. From our Distributed Journeys (we had 16 people from here in Oviedo on eight trips around the world), to the guest preachers, worship music, prayers, media and more, we often are being reminded that we are a church distributed, everywhere, every day. In many places around the world, including where elder Fayez is from, people have to meet in secret to study the Word of God. These Christians who are all over the world may never experience what we are a part of every weekend. They don’t have lots of churches and services to choose from. They risk everything to be a believer, as the early church did. We need

Greeting Card Ministry to know and remember that, to pray for them and experience what they are experiencing – an intense interaction with God and His Word and His people! That brings me to the second point, and a passion of ours, and you know what it is. You’ve heard me say, “Church is not an event on Sunday; it is a people we are/become seven days a week.” It happens out there, living life together, in His Word and in each other’s lives! That takes some other types of gatherings, some other times or places, and it takes more than just community, more than just serving; it takes community with a purpose of becoming more like Christ together and, as a result, serving the world around us with His power! Third, we are blessed each week with incredible preaching that directly impacts our lives from God’s Word from Pastor Joel, Pastor Vernon and Dr. Steve Brown. But what I have become keenly aware of is that many people have never thought about or read God’s Word for themselves and/or connected the whole story, His story, to their own. Many do not read the Bible because they are intimidated and are not sure how to start, or if it even connects with their lives and our world. It does, and they can do it! The body of Christ around the world, the body of Christ gathered right here, the Word of God and the story it tells that connects us all, from Adam and Eve to you and me, and from Egypt and India to Oviedo – I am convinced that this is what changed the world forever, what changed me, what is changing the world around us. It is that simple! ¿A

lguna vez has pensado que la paciencia sería una buena forma de servir a los demás? Sé que viajar por las carreteras de la Florida Central puede poner a prueba la paciencia, y por supuesto, nuestros hijos la ponen a prueba todo el tiempo, pero en la Biblia la segunda carta de Pedro dice que los cristianos son partícipes de la naturaleza divina de Dios. Como creyentes de Jesucristo tenemos acceso con nuestra nueva naturaleza. Gálatas 5:22 nos dice que es el fruto del espíritu. En otras palabras necesitamos cultivar nuestra naturaleza, nuestra nueva identidad, que Dios nos ha dado, para los demás. El Espíritu Santo no sólo vino a visitarnos, sino a habitar en nosotros para amar a Dios y amar a los demás. Cuando oramos para tener paciencia le estamos pidiendo a Dios que nos ayude a amar porque la paciencia es una característica del amor (1ª Corintios 13:4). Nuestro llamado es a siempre amar al prójimo. Nosotros fuimos diseñados para eso. Aunque nunca me ha gustado la frase “Ten cuidado con lo que le pidas a Dios, porque te lo puede conceder”, no debemos temer de orar para que nos dé paciencia. Una de las razones por las que no tenemos paciencia en

nuestras vidas es por el miedo de que las cosas no pasen a la velocidad que queremos, o porque actuamos pobremente a los ensayos y pruebas que ayudan a ser pacientes. La paciencia está atada a la esperanza, a la espera, y a la perseverancia, y es el terreno fértil para depender de Él mientras buscamos sabiduría y sus planes dan fruto (Romanos 8:28). El estar entre varias culturas o ambientes nos ayuda a que nuestra paciencia aumente, pero necesitamos centrarnos en Jesús que es el pilar y nuestra identidad. Pídele a Jesús que te cubra con el don de su vida para que pueda bendecir a los demás. Por ejemplo, ¿alguna vez has estado esperando en la fila del supermercado para pagar y la persona delante de ti tenía mucha mercancía, pero olvidó su cartera en el carro? Si Jesús fuera el que estuviera detrás de esa persona ¿Cómo crees que reaccionaría? ¿Cómo quisieras que Él respondiera si te pasara a ti? Un don práctico sería sonreírle y hacerle sentir que comprendes lo que está pasando. Mostrar el don de la paciencia es una forma maravillosa de servirle a los demás. Mientras el pastor Joel sigue desarrollando el “venga a nosotros tu reino, hágase tu voluntad así en la tierra como en el cielo”, él esta abordando el tema de tener paciencia cuando hay diferencias. Continuing Education in Swaziland BY Courtney Walmer Distributed Journeys Intern

I

n God’s Kingdom, justice is a reality, hope is steadfast, and redemption is certain. In the several years of Distributed Journeys to Swaziland, God has continued to knit our hearts with those of the Siteki community. In April, a group went to Swaziland to take pictures, do interviews, and further build relationships with students, teachers and community leaders to assist with scholarships. The Wooden School House was launched. The Wooden School House exists to extend scholarships to the orphans and vulnerable children of the Lubombo province in Swaziland to reach their next level of education. Jeremiah Shaw, co-founder of Kingdom Noise, was inspired with the idea of creating paintings of the actual students who attend the Global Mission School in Swaziland. The paintings give you the opportunity to equip these children for a future in which they can provide for themselves and their families, and become future leaders of Swaziland. Kingdom Noise’s first Wooden School House Art Show will be held in September. The goal is to extend scholarships to the 13 seventh-grade students at Global Primary School to attend high school. Its principal, the teachers and the students themselves are more than confident those students will be able to pass the test necessary to attend high school if they have the resources available to fund their education. Because Christ lives in us, it is amazing how we can be a part of caring for the most vulnerable in

our world. Our Father cares so much about our dignity that He wants to see gifts utilized and dreams fulfilled. We do not worship a small god; we worship an awesome God. Hearing the cries of 13 orphaned and vulnerable children to continue their education, the Lord is creatively weaving gifts on the other side of the world together to answer prayers. Vusumuzi Ndzabandzab, an 18-year-old student at Global Primary School, has taught me so much about living life in abundance because of the joy he has found in Christ. And because of God’s compassion in inspiring the Wooden School House, Vusi will be able to pursue his dreams. My first memory of Vusi is hearing him lead the Global Primary School in singing the words, “Higher, higher. Lift Jesus higher.” As head boy of the school, he has inspired his classmates to reach higher in the classroom, at home, on the soccer field, and in their worship. He excels in the classroom and dreams of becoming an engineer in order to work on cars and planes. Ironically, his contact with cars is slim, and he has gazed at the single airport in Swaziland just once. At home, he works hard in the garden to support the 10 others with whom he lives. Vusi lives up to his name, meaning “to awaken.” Aware of his own potential, he awakens others to the possibility of a more hopeful, more beautiful, more inspiring future. This boy who lives with his grandmother in a destitute country, with the highest rate of HIV/AIDS, finds his soul awakened through singing. His favorite song is “moya wam undinga wena,” because the song confesses the soul’s need for God and asks of Him to stay until the end. Vusi is a voice for strength in the midst of poverty and a reminder of God the Father’s ever presence for the orphaned. Backpack Drive Fills Need for Thousands of Kids BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service

L

ast weekend Northland held its annual backpack drive to help kids in need get backpacks and school supplies for a great start to the school year. Drumroll please ... We collected enough supplies to fill around 1,300 backpacks! Over the course of the weekend, more than 40 different volunteers collected and sorted the supplies that came in — including many high school and middle school students who served during multiple services. After Sunday evening worship, approximately 200 of us stayed after service to pack backpacks and load them into trucks and trailers. This weekend, Chris Gerrish and Marcus Rhoads from Northland’s video team drove a trailer to Houma, La., where one of our Web worshipers is holding a backpack drive to benefit families affected by the oil spill. Marcus and Chris will bring that story back to share with the rest of us soon. Many of the backpacks were also distributed locally to organizations such as Christian HELP, Harvest Time International and The Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools. Overall, thousands of kids in need are off to a great start for the school year, thanks to your generosity and willingness to serve others! Northland is no longer taking donations for the backpack drive. Supporting Rapha House an Opportunity for Spiritual Growth

Students can help others see their value in God’s eyes. By Sara Hall Noise Group Leader

T

he work of Rapha House against the traumatic effects of slavery is work that reflects the very heart of God. His Word tells us that people are worth more than the services they provide, that life is worth more than money. Because of the blood of Jesus, every life has intrinsic value, which has nothing to do with his or her net worth. All human life has equal value, “for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28, NASB). Yet, slavery exists because some choose to believe that certain lives can be sold, used up and discarded in a fashion closely resembling the use of toilet paper, that some lives are not as valuable as others. How can lives be reclaimed after being “flushed down the drain”? Only one answer exists: These lives must be put in contact with their Creator and Redeemer. They must be introduced to the intrinsic value, found only in Christ. The survivors of slavery, especially child sex slavery, have had this natural sense of value beaten and starved out of them. Rapha House seeks to restore it. As a matter of fact, Rapha House succeeds in the work of restoration where governmentsourced programs fail. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17, NIV). There is one issue: Human trafficking is a global problem, and Rapha House has only had the finances to work in Cambodia. However, this problem is the open door for Northland’s student involvement. Rapha House needs funds to extend its reach, and we have the time, energy and resources to raise those funds.

Supporting the extension of Rapha House has proved to be an opportunity for spiritual growth in the lives of our students. The developing hearts and minds of high schoolers are uniquely suited to understand the pains of others when they are presented with the opportunity. Taking action against these pains follows more naturally for them than for adults. These acts of service create a host of situations to build faith, confidence and an understanding of who God is and what He does today. During every stage of the work being done for Rapha House, students have been developing prayer, communication and conflict resolution skills. Individual students are now showing leadership, and creative, technical, and personal gifts that they were not aware of before. Through the dodge ball tournament, Baht movie night, and Food Fight for Freedom, more awareness was raised, and the students’ goal of $2,500 by August 31 is halfway met. These are amazing blessings; however, I am still anticipating the goal — not the monetary goal set by the students, but the spiritual goal. On August 31, we will look at the past year of work and say, “Look what God did, what He is doing! How blessed we are to be a part of this!” Glorifying God is the purpose. The students’ efforts are glorifying God, and Rapha House’s efforts are glorifying God, because all this work would be only effort without result if God wasn’t behind it. God is glorified when the church works together to bring restoration to others from Florida to Cambodia and everywhere in between. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Learning Patience That Serves Others BY Mike Fernández Spanish Ministry Leader

H

ave you ever thought that patience would be a great way to serve others? I know driving on the roads in Central Florida can test patience, and, of course, our kids test it all the time, but the Bible says in 2 Peter that Christians are partakers of God’s divine nature. As believers in Jesus Christ, we have access with our new nature. Galatians 5:22 tells us that it is a fruit of the Spirit. In other words, we need to cultivate our new nature, our new identity, which is a gift from God to others. The Holy Spirit didn’t only come to visit us, but to inhabit us so we can love God and love others. When we pray for patience, we also are asking God to help us learn to love, as patience is a characteristic of love (1 Corinthians 13:4). Our calling is always to love others. We were designed for that. Thus, I never liked the phrase “Be careful what you pray for, because you might get it,” when referring to praying for patience. We should never be afraid to pray for that. Part of the reason we don’t appropriate patience in our lives is because of fear of things not happening at the pace we want them to, or because we respond poorly to trials or tests that help produce patience. Patience is tied into hope, waiting and perseverance, and it is all fertile ground to depend on Him as we seek wisdom and His plans come to fruition (Romans 8:28). Being in or with different cultures or environments can help us grow in patience, but we need to be centered in Jesus, who is our Anchor and our Identity. Ask Jesus to embrace the gift of His life in you so that it can bless others. For example, have you ever waited in line at a grocery store, and the person in front of you had a lot of groceries but then forgot his wallet in the car? If Jesus were the one behind this person, how do you think He would respond? How would you want Him to respond to you, if it were you? A practical gift would be to smile at him and let him feel your understanding. Showing the gift of patience to others is a wonderful way to serve others. As Pastor Joel continues to unpack “thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” he is tackling the topic of patience when there are differences. ongtime Northlander Danny Gordon is being presented to join Northland’s elder board. Northland’s elders are volunteers who serve six-year terms. They meet together every week for prayer and every other week to discuss the church’s business, set policy, make major personnel and financial decisions, and provide wisdom and oversight to our leaders and staff. The Gordon family (l to r): Nichole, Grayson, Ashton They also provide spiritual help to the and Danny congregation, caring for people through prayer and providing a listening ear and advice where needed. “It is not a position that we seek to fill as much as we look for people who are already doing the work of an elder and then affirming them in that role,” explains Northland’s senior pastor, Dr. Joel C. Your work, your calling, your passion for ministry ... I am an architect ... a partner at HuntonBrady Architects located in Downtown Orlando. I am called first and foremost to worship God and serve my family, but I also have a passion for community, which has led me to volunteer in various organizations. I have just finished my seventh year serving on the board at Delaney Park Little League — which my father played in when he was a kid, I played in when I was a kid, and my son, Grayson, is now playing in. This past year, I started volunteering on the advisory board of the Salvation Army, which my Grandfather served on for decades when he was alive. My wife, Nichole, and I have been teaching a student Bible study for the students at our kids’ public school, Blankner, on Wednesday mornings for the past two years. I love to involve myself in the students’ lives enough for them to know that I care about them so that when I present the Word to them, they know it is from the heart. I also have a deep passion for worship through music and love to lead worship in a small group setting. Let’s talk about your involvement with Northland. How long have you been here and how have you been involved? My wife, Nichole, introduced me to Northland in 1991, when we started dating. She had been attending Northland since the English Estates days (she started attending when she was 5-years-old). I knew Pastor Vernon Rainwater through his time with Youth for Christ, so I feel like I’ve been attending longer than 19 years. I have been involved with Northland primarily through the now-concluded Married Young Adults Ministry, leading worship and organizing home groups. It was a real blessing seeing people get connected to the larger body of Northland through a smaller, more intimate setting ... that is one of the passions that I hope to bring to my role as an Elder, connecting God’s people together through personal relationships. Looking back, how has God prepared you for your role with Northland’s Governing Elder Board? For me, becoming an elder isn’t something that I set as a long-range goal ... in fact, it came as a surprise and an honor when I learned I was being considered for the role! I think God has been preparing me to serve in a shepherding capacity by connecting me to the MYAM ministry, where I was able to help get people connected to the church; I was prepared for the overseer function of being an Elder through becoming a partner at my firm and learning to deal with the organizational and financial aspects of running an organization. What excites you most about your new role? Serving such an awesome, forward-thinking church as Northland and seeing how we can make an eternal impact on people’s lives by pointing them toward Jesus as the strength for their everyday lives and equipping them for service to a world that desperately needs them. On a personal level, I look forward to the fellowship time I will be able to spend with the godly people whom I will be serving with. Please tell us about your family. Nichole and I have been married for 15 years. She has a passion for worship through dance, as well as an incredible magnetism to kids. My son, Grayson, is 13 and has a God-given talent for the guitar and sports as well as a natural instinct for leadership. He is a believer and attends LUGRox on a regular basis. My daughter, Ashton, is 12 and has a grace, balance and technique that is wonderful to watch on the dance floor. Her heart is huge, and she loves on other people before she thinks of herself. She, also, has accepted Christ and tells me she looks forward to going to camp every year because she knows she will strengthen her relationship to God there. How can we be praying for you as you are considered for this new role? Pray that I might glorify God in my daily walk so that I can follow Him more closely and discern His perfect will more clearly. Pray that the elder team would know what God has for our church throughout the next couple of decades and beyond. I believe that partnerships, both local and global, will be important to our continued maturity as a church as well as our impact on the world. We need to follow God where He is leading us, using the resources that we have been entrusted with, to further our impact in our own community and through the relationships we have forged with people around the world.

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Worship focus: Worship God today for His goodness. Out of the abundance of His goodness, He blesses. He pours out water on the thirsty land, and streams in the desert. He pours out His Spirit on His people, and His blessing on His children. (Isaiah 44:3)
