Welcome to Northland on Sunday Nights! sean cooper Northland on Sunday Nights Site Minister
O
ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.
AUGUST 22 — Dessert Night
After service tonight, meet in the Welcome Center to enjoy a time of catching up with everyone. Our hope for these gatherings is to create some space to share stories of life and how God is working in our community. This is informal, so come for a few minutes or stay as long as you like! Remember to get your children and bring them along. >>> www.facebook.com, Northland on sunday nights
Remember all of those backpacks that you helped assemble? More than 500 of them made it to Louisiana to help families in need as a result of the oil spill.
Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sundaynights)
UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: AUGUST 15 — College Students!
School is starting back up, and we want to meet with you to talk about college life in Central Florida! This gathering will take place immediately after the worship service and include food and conversation about ministry opportunities. Join Brian Katauskas and Sean Cooper in the Welcome Center.
Serve team, Louisiana style. Front row (l to r): Brittanie Crist, Kadi Sykes, Terri Goulette Sykes and Pastor Kirby Verret; Back row (l to r): Jerry Crist and Karen Solet.
The families were overwhelmed by your generosity.
mountdoranews Gather to Be Refreshed BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister
“ Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus.” –Acts 3:19-20 (NIV)
G
od has just healed a man crippled since birth. A large crowd comes running, drawn by the jubilant celebration of the healed man. And Peter shares the message of Christ with the astonished people. Among other things, Peter points to “times of refreshing” for those who become followers of Jesus. By refreshing, he means the rest and peace of a believer as he places himself in the presence of God. This is a promise for all Christians — that God will be present with you. Jesus wants you to feel His presence. That is why He sent the Holy Spirit. He says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”
(Joshua 1:5, NIV). Where do you get refreshed by the presence of God? One place that I do is at The Gathering at Northland at Mount Dora. At The Gathering, I see old friends and meet new brothers and sisters in Christ, I have fun cutting up and playing games, I am lifted up by the prayers and testimonies of my church family, and I am inspired by the living and active Word of God. The Gathering reminds me that as I journey through this life, I do so in the company of friends! Jesus was serious when He said, “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20, NIV). He will be present with us at The Gathering. Why don’t you give it a try? This August’s Gathering will include the fall kickoff of CREW352, the Mount Dora middle and high school youth group. After dinner, the CREW band will lead us in worship in the sanctuary, and then the students will hold a lock-in at the church. There will be an opportunity for adults to share and pray as well. It will be a great night for all Mount Adorables to be refreshed in the presence of Jesus. Come and join us at The Gathering! What:

aroundnorthland SonShine Kids Meets for Prayer, Networking, Socialization By Tami Nickerson and John Leatherman
S
ome of us have to seize our kids’ wrists so they can’t run off; others would count it a blessing if their kids could run off at all. Some of us have kids asking why they have to be in a wheelchair; others would count it a blessing to be asked anything at all. This broad spectrum of family situations comprises Access Ministries SonShine Kids, Northland’s support group for families of children with special needs. Special. The word has a stigma attached, and I don’t know why. Restaurants always want you to hear their specials, and every TV show strives to have a Christmas special or a “very special” episode. Are any of these things better or worse than their regular, or typical, counterparts? No. They’re just different. Unique. Special. That’s really the best word for it. SonShine Kids is guided by Tami Nickerson, a parent who has a son with a variety of special needs. Tami envisioned a group addressing children with a wide variety of special needs, both intellectual and physical, along with both mothers and fathers. The divorce rate among parents of special needs children is 80 percent. While this figure is hard to verify, we cannot deny that these marriages face challenges beyond those of typical parents, whose one-in-two divorce rate is high enough. But
as Christians, we know that challenges can make us stronger; it’s all in how we respond. The purpose of SonShine Kids is to encourage us to come together and share our struggles and our victories. SonShine Kids meets the third Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with special needs child care provided, for prayer, networking and socialization. Guest speaker topics have included special needs trusts, behavior therapy and raising typical siblings. This month Pastor Gus Davies will encourage us to tell our stories. Another aspect of this group is the playgroup that occurs at least monthly for the entire family. Past events have included visits to the fire station, family picnics and ice cream socials, and there are plenty of activities for the fall we invite you to come and enjoy. –Unknown Our first opportunity to serve together will be November 6 at Give Back, a partnership with Lift Disability Network and with Operation Christmas Child. We will stuff shoe boxes with gifts for children overseas. If you feel God is calling you to build relationships in this community or to serve in this community, please pray about it and contact Tami Nickerson (Tami1377@netzero.net or 407-5959068) or Laura Lee Wright (lauralee.wright@northlandchurch. net or 407-937-0549).
The playgroup has lots of fun activities planned.
“ We are not limited by our disability, only by the inability of others to recognize our unlimited potential.”
The kids loved exploring at the fire station.

Construction of Namibia Youth Center Begins
Participate in a Distributed Journey to work on the building. BY pattI harshey Distributed Journeys Administrator
J
ust as the song states, “I’m workin’ on a buildin’,” you can have the unique opportunity to do just that … in Namibia with a construction team from Northland. Northland’s missionary pastor in Namibia, Lon Garber, and his wife, Val, have been praying and planning for the construction of a Youth Center for many years. This year, after overcoming what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles, God showed them He is bigger than any barrier and answered their prayers in a big way — they were able to purchase the land and begin construction! The building will become the headquarters for the various ministry activities spearheaded by the Garbers. It also will be a safe haven for children, youths and young adults, as well as a training ground to teach future leaders to know and love Jesus and, in turn, to spread that love and hope in a country that is in dire need of both. The Garbers envision future African leaders looking back on the training they received at the Youth Center as instrumental in their growth and development. Bud Abt, Northland’s chief “Mr. Fix-It” and “Mr. GitHerDone,” in Facilities, will lead the team to Namibia from October 5 to 18. Team members must be at least 18 years old and have some working knowledge of construction. Masonry skills are especially needed, but Bud says a willingness to learn on the job and a strong desire to pitch in and “get the job done” are also essential qualities of a team member. The cost of the trip has not
been determined; however, it is estimated at approximately $2,800. Scholarships are available. If “workin’ on a buildin’” for your Lord is something you are being called to do, contact Bud Abt (bud.abt@ northlandchurch.net) or me, Patti Harshey, Distributed Journeys administrator (patti.harshey@northlandchurch.net) by Tuesday, August 31, as tickets must be purchased that week. Answer: CREATION
God Created Us for a Reason Genesis 1:26-29
After God made the plants, fish, birds and animals, He said, “Let us make man in our likeness. Let them rule over the fish, the birds, the livestock and over the whole earth. Let them rule over all of the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created people as male and female. God blessed them. He said to them, “Have children and increase your numbers. Fill the earth and bring it under your control. Rule over the fish in the waters and the birds of the air. Rule over every living creature that moves on the ground. I am giving you every plant on the face of the whole earth that bears its own seeds. I am giving you every tree that has fruit with seeds in it. All of them will be given to you for food.”
Draw a picture of your favorite fish, birds, animals and plants.

Marriage: Built to Last
Thursdays, starting September 23, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Student Ministries and Care Center, The Rink.
A
ll marriages require focus and energy to stay healthy. This class focuses on how to use biblical principles to improve the way we love one another deeply in our marriages. Throughout the series, you’ll watch 24 real-life couples from across the country share candidly about their struggles in communication, finances, sexual intimacy, expectations and more. You will hear the story of Dave Ramsey and his wife, Sharon, as they share how they recovered from financial stress and hardship. You will hear the story of Kurt Warner and his wife, Brenda, as they share candidly about expectations, trust issues and how they adjusted to a blended family. Marriage: Built to Last includes biblical and practical teaching from Chip Ingram on video covering these six critical topics:
• Adjusting to Expectations • Learning to Communicate Clearly • Breaking Down Walls • Resolving Conflict • Restoring Sex and Intimacy • Striving for a Christ-Centered Marriage Whether you’re newly married, remarried or wanting to improve your relationships, this class, which James and Cindy Price will facilitate, provides biblical and practical teaching to give you tools to live intentionally and love biblically. Registration is required, and child care is provided for children 10 and under with registration. The cost: $5 registration per family and $7 for the workbook, available in the Northland Bookstore. Details and registration: Barb Olsen (barbara.olsen@ northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7183)

I Love You More
Thursdays, starting September 16, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Northland at Longwood, rooms 4213-15.
H
ere is great news for your marriage! Even the best marriages have problems! The question isn’t whether struggles will arise, but how we, as husbands and wives, will handle them when they come. Surprisingly, our struggles can become the tipping point for a deeper love and intimacy. In fact, everyday problems can compel us to say, “I love you more.” Relationship experts Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, in the six-week class on I Love You More: How Everyday Problems Can Strengthen Your Marriage, show how the same forces that can chip away at marriage can become a catalyst for new relational depth and richness – provided we make wise choices. Whether the problem is major or mild, we’ll learn how
to transform nettlesome issues into loving opportunities. Additionally, we’ll learn how everyday problems, when handled correctly, can actually strengthen our marriages. After this class, you’ll never look at everyday problems and struggles in your marriage the same way again! Topics include: • Love is not enough. • Tackle this problem first ... and all others get easier. • The subtle saboteurs of every marriage • How to solve any problem in five (not-so-easy) steps • Joining your spirits like never before • The good that comes from a problem-solving marriage Tom and Cathy DeWitt will facilitate this class. Registration is required. Child care is provided for children 10 and under with registration. The cost: $5 registration per couple and $22 for one book and two workbooks, available in the Northland Bookstore. Details and registration: Barbara Olsen (407-949-7183 or barbara.olsen@northlandchurch.net)

Ask the tough questions at the Alpha course.
lot of times, parents need help, but it can be hard to ask for help. Many parents wonder, Do I have what it takes to be a good parent? The six-week (plus one week intro) study Parenting: The Early Years, with video guides by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, goes deeper than simply getting kids to eat their broccoli and clean their rooms. It takes a biblical approach into the traits parents want their children to have, and the traits parents want their children to see modeled in them. The study will take place Sundays, September 19 to October 31 from 4 to 5:45 p.m. at Northland at Longwood, rooms 4213-15. Everyone is welcome, whether married, single or in a blended family. Danny Gordon Presented for Elder Role at Northland By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations
L
ongtime Northlander Danny Gordon is being presented to join Northland’s elder board. Northland’s elders are volunteers who serve six-year terms. They meet together every week for prayer and every other week to discuss the church’s business, set policy, make major personnel and financial decisions, and provide wisdom and oversight to our leaders and staff. The Gordon family (l to r): Nichole, Grayson, Ashton They also provide spiritual help to the and Danny congregation, caring for people through prayer and providing a listening ear and advice where needed. “It is not a position that we seek to fill as much as we look for people who are already doing the work of an elder and then affirming them in that role,” explains Northland’s senior pastor, Dr. Joel C. Hunter. You can learn more about Danny by reading the interview below. Details: Peter Katauskas (407-937-1809 or peter.katauskas@northlandchurch.net) Can you tell us a little about yourself? Your work, your calling, your passion for ministry ... I am an architect ... a partner at HuntonBrady Architects, located in downtown Orlando. I am called first and foremost to worship God and serve my family, but I also have a passion for community, which has led me to volunteer in various organizations. I have just finished my seventh year serving on the board at Delaney Park Little League — which my father played in when he was a kid, I played in when I was a kid, and my son, Grayson, is now playing in. This past year, I started volunteering on the advisory board of the Salvation Army, which my grandfather served on for decades. My wife, Nichole, and I have been teaching a student Bible study for the students at our kids’ public school, Blankner, on Wednesday mornings for the past two years. I love to involve myself in the students’ lives enough for them to know that I care about them so that when I present the Word to them, they know it is from the heart. I also have a deep passion for worship through music and love to lead worship in a small group setting. Let’s talk about your involvement with Northland. How long have you been here, and how have you been involved? My wife, Nichole, introduced me to Northland in 1991, when we started dating. She had been attending Northland since the English Estates days (she started attending when she was 5 years old). I knew Pastor Vernon Rainwater through his time with Youth for Christ, so I feel like I’ve been attending longer than 19 years. I have been involved with Northland primarily through the now-concluded Married Young Adults Ministry, leading worship and organizing home groups. It was a real blessing seeing people get connected to the larger body of Northland through a smaller, more intimate setting. ... That is one of the passions that I hope to bring to my role as an elder, connecting God’s people together through personal relationships.
Got News? Recently married or engaged? Have a new addition to the family? Send your wedding and newborn pictures plus details to the Northland News (newspaper@ northlandchurch.net).
Looking back, how has God prepared you for your role with Northland’s Governing Elder Board? For me, becoming an elder isn’t something that I set as a long-range goal. ... In fact, it came as a surprise and an honor when I learned I was being considered for the role! I think God has been preparing me to serve in a shepherding capacity by connecting me to MYAM, where I was able to help get people connected to the church; I was prepared for the overseer function of being an elder through becoming a partner at my firm and learning to deal with the organizational and financial aspects of running an organization.

What excites you most about your new role? Serving such an awesome, forward-thinking church as Northland and seeing how we can make an eternal impact on people’s lives by pointing them toward Jesus as the strength for their everyday lives and equipping them for service to a world that desperately needs them. On a personal level, I look forward to the fellowship time I will be able to spend with the godly people whom I will be serving with. Please tell us about your family. Nichole and I have been married for 15 years. She has a passion for worship through dance, as well as an incredible magnetism to kids. My son, Grayson, is 13 and has a God-given talent for the guitar and sports as well as a natural instinct for leadership. He is a believer and attends LUGRox on a regular basis. My daughter, Ashton, is 12 and has a grace, balance and technique that is wonderful to watch on the dance floor. Her heart is huge, and she loves on other people before she thinks of herself. She, also, has accepted Christ and tells me she looks forward to going to camp every year because she knows she will strengthen her relationship to God there. How can we be praying for you as you are considered for this new role? Pray that I might glorify God in my daily walk so that I can follow Him more closely and discern His perfect will more clearly. Pray that the elder team would know what God has for our church throughout the next couple of decades and beyond. I believe that partnerships, both local and global, will be important to our continued maturity as a church as well as our impact on the world. We need to follow God where He is leading us, using the resources that we have been entrusted with, to further our impact in our own community and through the relationships we have forged with people around the world.

Preaching the message this weekend:
Dr. Richard L. Pratt, Founder/President, Third Millennium Ministries
Dr. Richard Pratt is president of Third Millennium Ministries (www.thirdmill.org), launched in 1997 in response to the lack of training of Christian leaders around the world. Helping the church worldwide became his passion. He believed that any person who desired to learn more about the Bible should be given that opportunity. Furthermore, it should be accessible, in the person’s own language, and at no cost to him. Dr. Pratt chaired the Old Testament Department and taught at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, and Orlando for 21 years. He received a BA from Roanoke College, an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary and the Th.D. from Harvard University. He has evangelized and lectured throughout the world. Dr. Pratt served as the general editor of the NIV Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible. His books include Every Thought Captive, Pray With Your Eyes Open, Designed for Dignity and He Gave Us Stories, and two commentaries, one on 1 and 2 Chronicles, and one on 1 and 2 Corinthians. His books have been translated into several languages. Dr. Pratt is also a contributor to the Complete Literary Guide to the Bible and has authored numerous journal articles. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. PRATT, VISIT THIRDMILL.ORG.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
The Original Floor Plan of Your Life Scripture focus: Genesis 1:26-29 (NIV)
Worship focus:
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”
Worship God today as our Blessed Creator, our Wonderful Maker. He created us, both male and female, in His image, giving us dominion over all His creation.
summary prayer: Creator God, because you make all that draws forth our praise and the forms in which to express it, we praise you. Because you make artists of us all, awakening courage to look again at what is taken for granted, grace to share these insights with others, vision to reveal the future already in being, we praise you. Because you form your Word among us, and in your great work embrace all human experience, even death itself, inspiring our resurrection song, we praise you. Yours is the glory. Amen. (The Worship Sourcebook, pg. 164)
