VOLUME 11, ISSUE 34
This matter of “salvation” is, when seen intuitively, a very simple thing. But when we analyze it, it turns into a complex tangle of paradoxes. We become ourselves by dying to ourselves. We gain only what we give up, and if we give up everything we gain everything. We cannot find ourselves within ourselves, but only in others … – Thomas Merton (1915-1968), No Man Is an Island [1955]

ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.
AUGUST 29 — Rapha House Update
Did you catch the Rapha House video at the services August 7 to 9 (www.northlandchurch.net/media/students_supporting_ rapha_house/)? If so, you might remember Pastor Joel referencing an amazing project that some students at Northland are undertaking. Rapha House “exists to extend unconditional love to girls who have been rescued out of slavery and sexual exploitation” (www.raphahouse.org). Stay after service to see the short video on this project and hear from these students on ways you can get involved. Meet in the Welcome Center directly after service August 29 for a 15- to 20-minute presentation. Refreshments will be provided.
The Fusion college ministry, for students ages 18 to 25, meets Sundays at 7:15 p.m. in The Rink at the Student Ministries and Care Center.

Each week you can view upcoming opportunities through these ways: • Northland News (this section right here!) • Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/sundaynights)
UPCOMING WORSHIP RESPONSES: AUGUST 22 — Dessert Night
After service tonight, meet in the Welcome Center to enjoy a time of catching up with everyone. Our hope for these gatherings is to create some space to share stories of life and how God is working in our community. This is informal, so come for a few minutes or stay as long as you like! Remember to get your children and bring them along. Sunday evening site Minister Sean Cooper opens the discussion for the college ministry that gathered after service last weekend.
After food and fellowship, spend time in worship, prayer and the Scriptures.
mountdoranews Have You Heard From Jesus? BILL CHAPMAN Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister
“ For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
H
ave you heard from Jesus lately? He wants to speak to you. Does that sound mystical? It’s quite simple, really. Just open up His Word. When I came to Christ at age 27, I hungered to hear from God. I was in outside sales at the time and continually had to fight the urge to stay at home and devour the Word of God. Do you hunger to hear from Jesus?
A friend of mine shared an excellent way to study the Bible: Step 1: Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you through the Word. Trust that He will do it. Step 2: Read a passage of Scripture, one verse at a time. Step 3: In your journal, make three columns. Title the first “I don’t understand this”; the second “I never thought of it that way”; and the third “How does this apply to me?” Step 4: Group the verses under each category and look for wisdom from the Spirit of God. Take those verses that really spoke to you and figure out how God wants you to apply them in your life. Step 5: Go about your day intent on applying the Word you just received. Step 6: Come back tomorrow and repeat the process. This is a fantastic way to come to know Scripture. You will find things in the Word of God that you don’t understand. But you also will receive Truth that you do understand and that you can begin to walk out in your life. One more thing: Go the next step and begin to study the Bible with friends. We have several great venues at the Mount Dora site where you can come together with fellow believers and grow in your understanding of God’s Word. Groups like this are an awesome place to share all three “categories” of verses. Many times God has shown me the meaning of a Scripture as I see it walked out in the life of another Christian. For more info on groups of believers where you can grow in your understanding of the Word, just give me a call or send me an e-mail. We also have plenty of free Bibles and devotional books at the Welcome Center in the foyer. Feel free to take these resources to help you discover God’s Word. I look forward to helping you hear from Jesus!
“Let scripture be put in the hands of everybody; let everyone interpret them himself according to the light he has; let there be private judgment, let spiritual liberty be received as in Apostolic days. Then only will the people be ‘free’ and arise in their power and majesty and obey the voice of enlightened conscience and be true to their convictions and practice the virtues which Christianity commands and obey God rather than men.” — Martin Luther >>> www.facebook.com/northlandmountdora

e spent last week talking about the power of living in community toward Christ. We looked at the early church and the Great Commission and thought about what it means to us today, here and now. We also talked at length about love and the mark of the disciples of Christ. We came to the conclusion that if we are to call ourselves Christians, there must be something about us that agrees with that self-diagnosis. Love is the key. We must be marked by love for Him and for one another, and to love someone, you must know him or her, and to know that person, you have to spend time with him or her. We want to make that as easy as possible in this busy world, so we are launching gatherings throughout Oviedo and East Orlando this fall to study God’s Word, so we can know Him by spending time with Him, which will allow us to love Him better and deeper. While doing that, we will gather with other believers, allowing us to get to know them better by spending time with them, and thus we’ll be capable of loving them better
NEXT WEEKEND! Family fifth Sunday Serve Day!
and deeper as well. Easy-peasy, so sign up to host or attend, whatever God is calling you to do. Get started, and be a part of it with us! Since we are making it that easy for the first part of this effort, we thought we would help out and make it just as easy for the second part. One of the end results of loving better and deeper is living a life of worship to God by serving others in His name. This is glorifying the Father in heaven, as it says in 1 Peter 2:12: “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” (NIV). James covers this in length as well in chapter 2 on his treatment of faith and works and their interdependent parts. Also, in Radical, by David Platt, it is said this way: “The means of our salvation is faith in Christ alone, and the basis of our salvation is the work of Christ alone. We are not saved by (works,) but caring of the poor (among other things) is evidence of our salvation. The faith in Christ that saves us from our sins involves an internal transformation that has external implications.” To glorify God by serving others seems simple enough, yet I hear time and time again from people, “I would love to, but I am just not sure how (or when, where and so on).” Since the verse we landed on last week as motivation for all of this discussion was John 13:35, where Jesus tells his disciples, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (NASB), we thought we would start there, by your loving service to one another.
Love is the key. We must be marked by love for Him and for one another. ... One of the end results of loving better and deeper is living a life of worship to God by serving others in His name.

Sunday, August 29, Northland at Oviedo. This is an opportunity for parents to disciple their children by spending a Sunday morning together in worship, learning the Word, and serving as a family! Student and Children’s Ministries will not meet, as we are encouraging our families to worship and serve together. The nursery will be available for age 2 and under. There will be service opportunities for the whole family before each service. The sign-up for these opportunities will be at Children’s Ministries check-in. Opportunities for students on page 7. Starting in September, we are calling every single one of you to serve everyone else at least once this fall. We want you to come and serve from start to finish, serve all day, meet the 9 o’clock crowd, the 11 o’clock crowd, serve them all. We know this will be a challenge for some with kids, and so on, so the other option is to come and serve at one service and attend the other, but if this is your best option, then do it twice this fall. Why? Because we need the help? NO! Because this is how community is formed in deeper ways, this is how you get to know someone, which allows you to love them, and, like it or not, that is what He told us to do and what would bring Him the greatest glory … our love for one another! So get signed up right now, and who knows, you might even like it and want to do it more! >>> www.facebook.com/northlandoviedo

Life Crossroads Helps Those Currently, Formerly Incarcerated BY GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads
I
t has been a busy month for the Life Crossroads teams. The Prison and Jail Ministry teams have been involved in the preparation of the Healing and Transition (HAT) program, and Northland will become what is known as a Station of Hope (SOH), along with other congregations throughout Central Florida. As a Station of Hope, Northland has committed to be a welcoming congregation and community to those who have been incarcerated as well as support their families. The team is looking for mentors/coaches to walk alongside a returning citizen and guide that person through his or her Individual Transition Plan, which was created based on his or her needs. It might be that the person needs a ride to the probation office, or help with completing an application. Serving the returning citizens might be as simple as being willing to meet someone new during his or her first time coming to the sanctuary for a worship service. Maybe going into the jail or serving as a mentor/ coach is not your gifting, but you may like helping with data entry, scheduling appointments, or even doing research on the Web for new programs and opportunities for the program participants. We want to be able to reach out and show the love of Christ in many different ways, bring light into the very dark spaces of their lives. The HAT program will officially begin September 1, and we are looking for volunteers to support this outreach activity. A pastors luncheon was held August 11, and 81 pastors and ministry leaders gathered to hear
about how they could become a Station of Hope. Pastor ministry is looking for rural property within an hour’s drive Perez-Aponte opened the gathering in prayer. Young men 18 to 26 years old who have gotten caught in the trap of addiction or who are experiencing a rebellious attitude and are looking for a change in their lives can be served through the regeneration initiative and transitional housing program Breaking Free Orlando (BFO). BFO is a 13-month residential program for young men who want to make a change in their lives. Because of our partnership connection to Breaking Free Inc., the options are much wider for the type of program setting that is needed for each young man. Breaking Free has facilities in Georgia and Texas with a vision of locations in several other states. The goal is to bring the residents into a closer relationship with God, walk them through the hurts in their lives, often the cause for the lapse into addiction. ur next Local Serve Day is set for Saturday, August 28. Local Serve Day is a once-a-month event when we distribute the church into the local community to serve others. It’s a great way to “be the church everywhere” and to show God’s love to others in a tangible way. Projects are available for all ages and abilities, and are perfect for families, small groups or just a group of friends. This month’s projects include: — Landscaping and beautification projects at Milwee Middle School. — Assisting in the Samaritan’s Village resale shop with rearranging the boutique floor, sorting clothing and doing other small projects, such as tiling floors and building shelving. — Sorting/stacking items, and packing them for distribution through Harvest Time International to local organizations in need as well as mission efforts in Third World countries.

God’s Promise to Abram Genesis 12:1-3
The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country and your people. Leave your father’s family. Go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing to others.” By faith, Abram believed God’s promise. Today, we can see God has kept His promise to bless all nations through Abram. God did this in many ways, including through Abram’s two sons. His oldest son, Ishmael, became the father of the Arab nations. His younger son, Isaac, became the father of the Jewish (Hebrew) nation. Each of these nations has been a blessing to the world in some way.
It’s the study of family history.

Marriage: Built to Last
Thursdays, starting September 23, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Northland at Longwood, rooms 4206-7.
A
ll marriages require focus and energy to stay healthy. This class focuses on how to use biblical principles to improve the way we love one another deeply in our marriages. Throughout the series, you’ll watch 24 real-life couples from across the country share candidly about their struggles in communication, finances, sexual intimacy, expectations and more. You will hear the story of Dave Ramsey and his wife, Sharon, as they share how they recovered from financial stress and hardship. You will hear the story of Kurt Warner and his wife, Brenda, as they share candidly about expectations, trust issues and how they adjusted to a blended family. Marriage: Built to Last includes biblical and practical teaching from Chip Ingram on video covering these six critical topics:
• Adjusting to Expectations • Learning to Communicate Clearly • Breaking Down Walls • Resolving Conflict • Restoring Sex and Intimacy • Striving for a Christ-Centered Marriage Whether you’re newly married, remarried or wanting to improve your relationships, this class, which James and Cindy Price will facilitate, provides biblical and practical teaching to give you tools to live intentionally and love biblically. Registration is required, and child care is provided for children 10 and under with registration. The cost: $5 registration per family and $7 for the workbook, available in the Northland Bookstore. Details and registration: Barb Olsen (barbara.olsen@ northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7183)
I Love You More
Thursdays, starting September 16, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Northland at Longwood, rooms 4213-15.
H
ere is great news for your marriage: Even the best marriages have problems! The question isn’t whether struggles will arise, but how we, as husbands and wives, will handle them when they come. Surprisingly, our struggles can become the tipping point for a deeper love and intimacy. In fact, everyday problems can compel us to say, “I love you more.” Relationship experts Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, in the six-week class on I Love You More: How Everyday Problems Can Strengthen Your Marriage, show how the same forces that can chip away at marriage can become a catalyst for new relational depth and richness – provided we make wise choices. Whether the problem is major or mild, we’ll learn how to transform nettlesome issues into loving opportunities. Additionally, we’ll learn how everyday problems,
when handled correctly, can actually strengthen our marriages. After this class, you’ll never look at everyday problems and struggles in your marriage the same way again! Topics include: • Love is not enough. • Tackle this problem first ... and all others get easier. • The subtle saboteurs of every marriage • How to solve any problem in five (not-so-easy) steps • Joining your spirits like never before • The good that comes from a problem-solving marriage Tom and Cathy DeWitt will facilitate this class. Registration is required. Child care is provided for children 10 and under with registration. The cost: $5 registration per couple and $22 for one book and two workbooks, available in the Northland Bookstore. Details and registration: Barbara Olsen (407-9497183 or barbara.olsen@northlandchurch.net)
Parenting in the Early Years
10 Biblical traits your kids will remember you for.
A
lot of times, parents need help, but it can be hard to ask for help. Many parents wonder, Do I have what it takes to be a good parent? The six-week (plus one week intro) study Parenting: The Early Years, with video guides by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, goes deeper than simply getting kids to eat their broccoli and clean their rooms. It takes a biblical approach into the traits parents want their children to have, and the traits parents want their children to see modeled in them. The study will take place Sundays, September 19 to October 31 from 4 to 5:45 p.m. at Northland at Longwood, rooms 4213-15. Everyone is welcome, whether married, single or in a blended family. Registration is required. Class size is limited, so register today. Cost: $5 per family and $7 for the workbook, available at the Northland Bookstore. Danny Gordon Presented for Elder Role at Northland By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations
L
ongtime Northlander Danny Gordon is being presented to join Northland’s elder board. Northland’s elders are volunteers who serve six-year terms. They meet together every week for prayer and every other week to discuss the church’s business, set policy, make major personnel and financial decisions, and provide wisdom and oversight to our leaders and staff. The Gordon family (l to r): Nichole, Grayson, Ashton They also provide spiritual help to the and Danny congregation, caring for people through prayer and providing a listening ear and advice where needed. “It is not a position that we seek to fill as much as we look for people who are already doing the work of an elder and then affirming them in that role,” explains Northland’s senior pastor, Dr. Joel C. Hunter. You can learn more about Danny by reading the interview below. Details: Peter Katauskas (407-937-1809 or peter.katauskas@northlandchurch.net) Can you tell us a little about yourself? Your work, your calling, your passion for ministry ... I am an architect ... a partner at HuntonBrady Architects, located in downtown Orlando. I am called first and foremost to worship God and serve my family, but I also have a passion for community, which has led me to volunteer in various organizations. I have just finished my seventh year serving on the board at Delaney Park Little League — which my father played in when he was a kid, I played in when I was a kid, and my son, Grayson, is now playing in. This past year, I started volunteering on the advisory board of the Salvation Army, which my grandfather served on for decades. My wife, Nichole, and I have been teaching a student Bible study for the students at our kids’ public school, Blankner, on Wednesday mornings for the past two years. I love to involve myself in the students’ lives enough for them to know that I care about them so that when I present the Word to them, they know it is from the heart. I also have a deep passion for worship through music and love to lead worship in a small group setting. Let’s talk about your involvement with Northland. How long have you been here, and how have you been involved? My wife, Nichole, introduced me to Northland in 1991, when we started dating. She had been attending Northland since the English Estates days (she started attending when she was 5 years old). I knew Pastor Vernon Rainwater through his time with Youth for Christ, so I feel like I’ve been attending longer than 19 years. I have been involved with Northland primarily through the now-concluded Married Young Adults Ministry, leading worship and organizing home groups. It was a real blessing seeing people get connected to the larger body of Northland through a smaller, more intimate setting. ... That is one of the passions that I hope to bring to my role as an elder, connecting God’s people together through personal relationships. Looking back, how has God prepared you for your role with Northland’s Governing Elder Board? For me, becoming an elder isn’t something that I set as a long-range goal. ... In fact, it came as a surprise and an honor when I learned I was being considered for the role! I think God has been preparing me to serve in a shepherding capacity by connecting me to MYAM, where I was able to help get people connected to the church; I was prepared for the overseer function of being an elder through becoming a partner at my firm and learning to deal with the organizational and financial aspects of running an organization.

My son, Grayson, is 13 and has a God-given talent for the guitar and sports as well as a natural instinct for leadership. He is a believer and attends LUGRox on a regular basis. My daughter, Ashton, is 12 and has a grace, balance and technique that is wonderful to watch on the dance floor. Her heart is huge, and she loves on other people before she thinks of herself. She, also, has accepted Christ and tells me she looks forward to going to camp every year because she knows she will strengthen her relationship to God there. How can we be praying for you as you are considered for this new role? Pray that I might glorify God in my daily walk so that I can follow Him more closely and discern His perfect will more clearly. Pray that the elder team would know what God has for our church throughout the next couple of decades and beyond. I believe that partnerships, both local and global, will be important to our continued maturity as a church as well as our impact on the world. We need to follow God where He is leading us, using the resources that we have been entrusted with, to further our impact in our own community and through the relationships we have forged with people around the world.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
LOVE ONE AND OTHERS Origins: Family Histories Are Key to Relating to Them Scripture focus: Genesis 12:1 (NASB) Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you…”
Worship focus: Worship God today as the Author of salvation. Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb. Through His Son, He has brought His salvation to every nation, tribe, people and language. (Revelation 7)
summary prayer: Father, we sing to You a new song; to You who have worked wonders; to You whose right hand and holy arm have brought salvation. You have made Your salvation known to all the earth. You have shown justice to the nations. All the ends of the earth have seen Your salvation. (Based on Psalm 98:1-6)
NEXT WEEKEND: A Message from Dr. Joel C. Hunter | LOVE ONE AND OTHERS | Loving “The Arguer” | Genesis 18:22-33
