very Tuesday morning, before many people have even gotten out of bed, men gather at Northland at Mount Dora for worship and the Word of God. Each week the Holy Spirit shows up and proves once again that “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17, NIV). This small band of brothers in Christ is learning to serve God and one another as we journey together through life. One man recently shared that he awoke around 5 a.m. and couldn’t go back to sleep, no matter how hard he tried. Then the Holy Spirit said, “Go to Bible study if you want to know my Word.” We pray for one another, we encourage one another, and we serve one another. We support a missionary in eastern Europe. And we experience loving community, the way Christ intends it to be. Do you have a band of brothers (or sisters) in your life? Jesus made us for relationships with Him and with one another. It gets pretty lonely out there if you are trying to walk alone. If you have a need for close Christian relationships, let me invite you to visit a Northland group at the Mount Dora site. e celebrated Family 5th Sunday Serve Day last weekend! We shut down the children’s wing, except for the nursery, and families signed up ahead of time to come and serve at “big” church with their parents. More than 30 parents and kids participated at both services by handing out newspapers, welcoming congregants, manning the refreshment tables and creating excitement in the foyer. We also enjoyed having 250 people in the main sanctuary at 11 a.m., with 50 kids enjoying worship with their parents and listening to Pastor Joel’s message. There may have been a few cries and some extra bustling, but a fuller expression of the body of Christ was enjoyed, and it was an awesome experience for everyone present. A big thanks in the form of a loud round of applause was given to all the kids at both services.
The volunteer prayer circle was full of families.

aroundnorthland New Mentoring Program Helps Inmates Find Freedom By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations
T
his Wednesday, Northland’s Healing and Transition program (HAT) held a ribbon cutting ceremony at John E. Polk Correctional Facility to mark the beginning of a new mentoring program aimed at helping inmates successfully transition back to their families and into their communities. The goal of the HAT program is to transform hearts and minds — to create a sense of inclusion, reducing the stigma and shame that are associated with incarceration and criminal records ... thus reducing recidivism. Through the HAT program, inmates work with mentors to create an individual transition plan. Upon their release, these individuals are connected to a “station of hope,” a house of
worship that has committed to welcoming individuals who have been incarcerated. Additionally, participants undertake a twoweek program at Harvest Time International, which includes life-skills training and job shadowing. Northland is partnering with several local churches and faith-based organizations to make the HAT program a reality. “Faith communities can offer a healing environment where non-judgmental acceptance, caring and redemption can occur,” says Gretchen Kerr, director of Northland’s LifeHope program. “We want to build networks of support that start in welcoming houses of worship and expand to the community at large.” Northland plans to extend the program to other correctional facilities. Learn more at www.hatprogram.org. Want to serve as a mentor? Contact Gretchen Kerr (gretchen.kerr@ northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7190).

Local Serve Day
An Easy Way to Get Involved
Hear What God Has Done!

T
hrough Northland’s Distributed Journeys, folks have traveled to all corners of the world showing the love of Christ to adults and children alike. But the trip participants often find they are the ones who felt God’s love in a strong way. Below some past Distributed Journey participants share how God worked in them too. “It was a wonderful experience to serve in another country. At the camp, there was one simple phrase that was used that appeared on T-shirts and signs: I’M THIRD. It means God, others and then me. That really sums up the message I took away from the experience for my life.” – Jerry Biuso (Egypt) “It was a trying experience physically and spiritually to minister to the kids at the camp. God really showed His amazing presence just to get me there physically. I didn’t go expecting to find God or receive a new and fresh revelation. I went out of obedience and was rewarded with the gift of seeing others grow in Him, both on the team of coaches and within the youth we worked with. It was a blessing and a richly deep experience to see us all loving the same Savior, but in a place so removed from my comfort zone. God promised to be there, and He was. The Lord is good.” – Josh Smith (Egypt)
Suzan Chick and her small group (l to r): Suzan, Maryna, Oksana, Pasha, Lilia, Alonya, Tanya and Levi.
“This summer I helped lead the Northland middle school trip to the Dominican Republic. We had an awesome team of 34 people go, and it was an amazing week. We built a chapel in a village called Pica Pica, a poor village in which the people are rich with the presence of the Lord. It was a wonderful feeling to know we could provide this chapel for them, but they gave us so much more in love and joy — and cookies! We met one boy who has cerebral palsy and cannot walk. He just sat in a chair unless one of our middle school kids carried him. I went again to Pica Pica later in the summer, leading a group of 16 kids from Winter Park High School FCA. We visited Pica Pica to lead them in worship one night, and we brought a walker for the boy, hoping it would be the right size and could help him walk. He got up and walked right away with the walker, joining us to worship at the new chapel the Northland team had built a month before. I never sensed such worship from someone in my life. He was full of joy, and the presence of the Lord was all around as he stood with his walker in church and praised the Lord. What an amazing gift it was to me to participate in God’s work. I felt so loved by God to be given this privilege.” – Lori Droppers (Dominican Republic) “After a few days of pre-camp training, 150 university students arrived, and English Camp 2010: Identity began. We led the students through inductive Bible studies on a different passage of Scripture each morning, encouraging them to observe what is said and what is meant, and how they can personally relate to it. I was surprised how seriously they observed each passage, and by the insights they would share. In a conversation about Jesus and His relationship with the woman who washed His feet (Luke 7:37-50), Kateryna, a girl in my study group, commented, ‘She did this to Him because the only response to love is love.’ I was blown away.” – Abby Mills (Ukraine)
Taylor McMurrin (front row, fourth from the left).
“Our team had the privilege of working with the youth of Kiev and New Life Church. It was so encouraging to see God at work in the camp and in the hearts of these students. We had the opportunity to guide some of the students into a relationship with Christ and encourage others to continue to pursue Him every day.” – Taylor McMurrin (Ukraine) “We were told in our weekly Northland team meetings prior to the trip that it was not our responsibility to convert any of the students. We were only to sow some seeds, and God and the Holy Spirit would do the rest. Someone asked me when I returned if the trip was a lightning bolt experience. It was not. It was sharing my experiences and my faith in a subtle way with the hope that I might make a small difference in at least one student’s life. If that happened, the trip would be an overwhelming success for me. I got much more from the trip than I felt I gave.” – Suzan Chick (Ukraine)
n Saturday, August 28, more than 100 people took part in Northland’s Local Serve Day at the Longwood and Mount Dora sites. Local Serve Day is a monthly event where we gather together on a Saturday morning to distribute the church into the local community to serve others. As many of you found out that day, it’s an easy, fun way to serve with others and make a difference in our community. Last weekend Northlanders served in several locations. At Harvest Time International, we sorted and packed items to later be distributed to those in need locally and around the globe. At Milwee Middle School, we did landscaping and beautification projects around campus so that kids would have a beautiful, welcoming environment in which to learn. At Samaritan’s Village Resale Shop, we assisted with setting up the boutique floor. And at Storehouse Assistance Center, we grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for more than 250 people waiting for assistance from the food pantry there. Teams from Mount Dora served at Debbie’s Doorstep and at the home of a Mount Dora family. Overall, it was a great day of serving others and sharing God’s love for them in a practical, tangible way! Are you looking to get involved with serving in the local community? Why not sign up for our next Local Serve Day on September 18? It’s a fun way to meet others and meet the basic needs of those around us. For project details and to register, visit www.northlandchurch.net, and click on “Get Involved” and then “Serving Opportunities.” There you will find plenty of information about ways to serve here at Northland, in the community and abroad!

“On the fourth night, we put on a movie for the orphans. I sat with one who was about my age, 15. We simply talked about things like cars, movies and a little about our family. I found out that he had parents, but was at the orphanage because they couldn’t provide for him. That got me a little, but we moved on and began talking about other things. I was so tired I could hardly move my hand to swat the mosquitoes that had been trying to get at me the whole time. I so wanted to go to bed, but couldn’t just interrupt the guy talking to me. I waited till there was a pause, and I was just about to tell At Milwee Middle School, we did landscaping and beautification projects.

God Cares for Hagar and Ishmael Genesis 21:9-21
God promised to care for Hagar and her son, Ishmael. After they ran out of water in the desert, Hagar sat down to cry. Then an angel said, “What’s the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” Then God opened Hagar’s eyes. She saw a well of water. So she went and filled the bottle with water, and she gave the boy a drink. God kept His promise to care for Ishmael. Later, God did make Ishmael into a great nation through his children and grandchildren. The Bible says, “The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving to all He has made.” We too can be loving to everyone the Lord has made.

e all experience conflict in our lives. Conflict is a difference in opinion or purpose that frustrates someone’s goals or desires. And when two or more gather together, there will eventually be conflict. How we respond to conflict can significantly impact our life, and the lives of those around us. We may seek the advice of family, friends, the church, and professional counselors to assist in resolving conflict. We must be careful to seek advice from folks who are willing to engage into our lives, are full of mercy and grace, and will uphold scriptural principles as the basis of truth. Come and learn the biblical approach to handling conflict and making a difference in your relationships. Study key verses and gain insights that you can use in everyday situations, and help others as well. Sundays, September 5 through October 10, 9 a.m., room 4209, Northland at Longwood. oin Pastor Gus Davies and Patty Sattler for an engaging one-day seminar Saturday, October 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Northland at Longwood in rooms 4206-7. This workshop will help you learn to use your own natural style to tell the stories of God through your own life stories. When asked what was most fulfilling about this seminar, recent participants responded: This is the first time I’ve ever written my story. I realized I was still carrying some baggage that I needed to give to Christ. Learning I have a story, but not in the traditional sense. Christ was always in the car of my life, but I had Him locked in the trunk for several years. It’s a story I can now tell with practice. Upon taking this material, the most fulfilling was the recognition of what type of storyteller-evangelist I am, and then knowing how to apply this. To register, go to www.northlandchurch.net. Select “Calendar,” and then select “October 2.” Then select “Sharing Life Stories.” Then click on the “Register” ticket and then “Join the Group.” After that, just follow the onscreen instructions to register. New Bible Studies for Adults
His Way 12-Step Program is Way, a Christ-centered addiction recovery ministry, has been serving the community and Northland for 20plus years and changing lives. To help support this ministry, in September and October, guest speakers are planned for three meetings at the fellowship hall in the Student Ministries and Care Center at Northland at Longwood. The speakers are: • Joe and Kelly Cordovano, founders of Fresh Start Ministries, September 23. • Dr. Brian Pikalow, pastor at Asbury United Methodist Church, September 30. • Pastor Dr. Kevin and Linda Urichko, October 14. Below, one woman shares how the ministry has impacted her life.
Sharing Life Stories
an environment where I receive encouragement, love, truth and acceptance with grace. It wasn’t easy to commit to coming every week five years ago. I originally committed to every other week, but when I saw the peace in my life that I experienced because of His Way, I decided to go every week. On the nights that I did not want to attend His Way, my daughter would beg me to go. She said it helped me to be a better mom to her! God is clearly turning my weaknesses into His strengths through His Way. It’s hard work, it’s fun, and it lightens my burdens. Come join us, and you, too, can get the help and support that you need now. You’ll find family here. The group meets Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Student Ministries and Care Center. Child care is available for kids up to fifth grade. Details: His Way (407-599-9770)
recepts Ministries is a Bible study method that uses a straightforward investigative approach to open the Bible and build the context for each statement it contains. Skills in observing and interpreting the Bible are taught and practiced. The fundamental principle of inductive Bible study is to study the text of Scripture first and refer to the work of others second. In this approach, individual time spent observing Scripture to know what the Bible says and using sound principles of interpretation to understand what it means should culminate in personal application. Join this eight-week inductive Bible study on the book of 1 Corinthians, and learn about our firm foundation of faith, which is Jesus Christ. The study is Thursdays beginning September 16 at 7 p.m. at Northland at Longwood, rooms 4209-10. Homework is required every week. Workbooks, which cost about $16, will be available on the first night of class. Child care is available upon request. Details: Geri Anderson (2Geri@cfl.rr.com or 407-331-6760)

C
orinth was a large, wealthy port city known for its debauchery. The church there was being seduced by the culture. As a result, Paul spent more than a year there helping to establish these believers. He wrote to them about how to live a lifestyle worthy of our calling as Christians. Needless to say, there is a lot we can learn and apply to our lives from this rich book. Join this study, and explore how to follow God’s wisdom rather than man’s. The study will be held Sundays at 10:45 a.m. beginning September 12 at Northland at Longwood, rooms 4206-7. Distributed Journeys (Continued from page 6.)
him I was heading for bed when he told me both his parents ‘drank vodka.’ Just like that, out of the blue, he said it, and I knew I wasn’t going to bed anytime soon. I told him about my parents and how they grew up in horrible circumstances, but how they then became Christians, and God saved them from their ways. I said there was hope for his parents and that he, too, could become a follower of God and be changed. He didn’t get saved on the spot, but later he told me he believed.” – David Mills (Ukraine) “I was raised in the Christian church as a preacher’s daughter and grew up hearing stories from the missionaries I met from around the world. I have spent most of my adult life saying, ‘Someday I’ll go on a mission trip,’ but I always had a long list of reasons why the time wasn’t right. This summer something happened. I could hear God very clearly calling me to go serve the orphans in Ukraine. Although my ‘list’ was still full, I decided to trust the Lord and go where He was sending me. It was Rhonda Cross with some new friends she met in Ukraine. an amazing journey, which reminded me how awesome our God truly is! The Lord provided all that I needed financially, physically, emotionally and spiritually to make the trip and has provided me with a ministry to tell others that their ‘someday is today’!” – Rhonda Cross (Ukraine) “South Africa is an amazing country with amazing godly people! We had the opportunity to help out with a soccer outreach alongside our partner churches, Vredelust and Way of Life, in the township of Khayelitsha. Everyone was very driven to make this a great way to help the community come together and connect. It was truly God’s working in all of us to really make this happen!” – Heather Ferraro (South Africa) “To say that a trip overseas changes your life would be an understatement. Yes, it has changed my perspective, but it’s changed so many more lives than just mine, from that of my 10-year-old niece, who tells her friends how she wants to go to Africa, to the life of a Swaziland woman blessed by a room full of white people with only prayers and a collection of snacks from our backpacks to offer. Our God is so much bigger than we can imagine. The more we acknowledge that it’s always about Him and others, and never about us, the more His name is lifted high and glorified, and that is simply the point.” – Amy Ferraro (South Africa) “I participated in the Distributed Journey to Ukraine for Orphan Camp, and my husband, Paul, went at the same time to English Camp. We had two distinctly different experiences, but were both impressed by our Northland teammates, mission partners MMK and CCX, and the children whose lives we were blessed to touch. It is impossible to communicate the challenges and triumphs of two weeks in just a few sentences. To say that the experience was amazing accurately sums it up and is an understatement at the same time. Because we live in the electronic age, we are able to keep in touch with our team members, the Ukrainian team members, and some of the children we met … so that we can continue to build on the relationships we began this summer.” – Tess DePalma (Ukraine)
Tess DePalma and her new little buddy, Anton.
“I was reminded that happiness comes from the most simple joys and not from all the stuff we accumulate or find ourselves surrounded by. These children were able to embrace every moment we shared with them and make of it the kind of happiness that is accompanied by butterflies in your stomach and tears of joy. These are moments we’ll never forget.” – Michelle Bosgraaf (Ukraine) I was thrilled to be able to take my 12-year-old granddaughter, Skye Wiggins, on Northland’s middle school trip to the Dominican Republic. My prayer for Skye and the other kids on the trip was that their spiritual eyes would be open to the things of God and that their physical eyes would be open to what life is like outside the United States. God answered that prayer and more. I was so blessed to see Skye working hard with hammers and drills during the construction time, and making friends with the DR kids during the ministry time. She wants to go again next year! – Carol Boldman Skye Wiggins learns the art of using power tools.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Worship focus:
LOVE ONE AND OTHERS Loving “The Guarded”
Worship God today as our Refuge and Strength. His power is made perfect in weakness. We don’t need to rely on our own ability, or occupy ourselves with our own protection. He is our Protector.
Scripture focus: Genesis 21:9-21 (NASB) Now Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking. Therefore she said to Abraham, “Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be an heir with my son Isaac.” The matter distressed Abraham greatly because of his son. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac your descendants shall be named. And of the son of the maid I will make a nation also, because he is your descendant.” So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba. When the water in the skin was used up, she left the boy under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said, “Do not let me see the boy die.” And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice and wept. God heard the lad crying; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter with you, Hagar? Do not fear, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him by the hand, for I will make a great nation of him.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the skin with water and gave the lad a drink. God was with the lad, and he grew; and he lived in the wilderness and became an archer. He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Are you curious as to how you can better love those who are different from you? Today, following the sermon, you can ask Pastor Joel questions about how to best interact with your friends, co-workers and fellow students! Jot your question below in preparation for a Q&A:
summary prayer: I love You, O LORD, my Strength! You are my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my Rock, in whom I take refuge; My Shield and the Horn of my salvation, my Stronghold. I call upon You. You are worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies. I cried to You for help, And You heard my voice, And my cry for help came to Your ears. You delivered me from my strong enemy, And from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity. For who is God, but You? And who is a rock, except You, Lord? You are the God who girds me with strength And makes my way blameless. You make my feet like hinds’ feet, And set me upon my high places. You have given me the shield of Your salvation, And Your right hand upholds me; Your gentleness makes me great. You enlarge my steps under me. Let all who take refuge in You be glad; Let them ever sing for joy, And may You shelter them. Let those who love Your name exult in You. (Taken from Psalm 18:2-6, 18, 31-36; Psalm 5:11)
NEXT WEEKEND: Sample questions: “How do I talk to my friend who is (Muslim, Jewish, Hindu) in a way that I can learn the most and offend the least?;” How can I work with someone who is different in religion or cultural perspective without being “unequally yoked?;” or “How can I explain my views or beliefs without being pushy?”
