“ My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you” –John 15:12 (NIV)

ohn 15:12 is simple and straightforward. Jesus commands us to love people as He has loved us. How did Jesus love us? Sacrificially and selflessly, loving us before we loved Him. This is the pathway to a life that matters – to love the people God places in our paths with a selfless, Christlike love. A couple of weekends ago, 30 Northlanders from the Mount Dora site joined two Helping Hands teams to love others in this way. Debbie’s Doorstep, a haven for abused or underprivileged women and their children, and a member family of the Mount Dora congregation each received a team of servants to cut grass, pull weeds, trim bushes, paint and make carpentry repairs. These believers set aside a portion of their weekend to fulfill Jesus’ command: “Love each other as I have loved you.” They provided much-needed “helping hands” to bless the ministry and the family in the daily ministerial lives they live. I am so proud of our Helping Hands teams for their sacrificial and faithful service to the Lord! If you would like to join the next Northland at Mount Dora Helping Hands project, send me an e-mail (bill.chapman@ northlandchurch.net) or call me (352-434-4116). ast week we baptized Abigail Carlson into our faith family here at Northland at Oviedo. She is the daughter of Lynn and Ben Carlson, and little sister of Kaley. Also in the last year, we have done this for Reidar Carlson, Gracie Mikesell and Katie Vice. We will do it for our little girl Ellery soon as well. Why do we do it at all? In the case of baby dedications and baby baptisms, it has everything to do with the parents and the faith community that surrounds them. It is a recognition of the covenant blessings afforded a child in the covenant family (baptisms), and it is the recognition that our children are not our own, but are a gift from the Lord, and so we dedicate their lives and ours back to Him who gave that life (dedications). We are simply stewards of this life and hope in the end that both children would make a public profession of their faith in Christ once old enough to do so. For some of you, it may be a bit confusing as to why we do both, but simply stated, we believe in the scriptural basis for both when correctly understood. Neither of these have anything to do with the salvation of the child; we believe in a good and loving God whose grace is sufficient for that. Regardless of choice, there is another commonality: the role of the family – not just the parents, but the entire faith family that will be around these parents and kids and the role we each

this week! Greeting Card Ministry play, intentional or not, in the shaping of the community in which we live. This is really at the heart of our site, Northland at Oviedo. We are always seeking to create space and time for all of us to enter into a deeper relationship with Christ and one another, and as a result of that, we will transform our community and the world, together. So be a part of it with us, welcome these new families into our family, and be sure to remember that you are in a family here with us. Families spend time together, really know one another and, as a result, are able to love one another and others better. It doesn’t always work that way in life, but in Christ, it can and should! >>> www.facebook.com/northlandoviedo

Sharing the Love of Christ in Europe BY alan chantelau Director of Missionary Care and Development

J

oe Dunn is a Northland missionary who serves with Great Commission Ministries as the managing director for Great Commission Europe. Great Commission Europe works with a network of churches, national pastors and leaders, and missionaries that desire to make disciples and plant churches throughout Europe. Joe; his wife, Peggy; and their five kids are based in Orlando. Below is an excerpt from his newsletter, called Europe Update.

Over the past two years, I have asked pastors and missionaries in Europe, “Why are you involved with your church, ministry or movement? What attracted you to it, and why not others? What keeps you involved?” They have all said that it was “people who read the Word of God and want to put it into practice.” I expected a variety of answers — the vision and commitment to the mission, inspiring leadership or great strategy, maybe Joe Dunn. even good teaching and worship — and although any of these may have surfaced later in the conversation, they were not the primary reasons people were drawn into fellowship. What drew them and keeps them are the changed lives of believers who desired to obey God and to surround themselves with others who wanted to do the same. Decisions I have made in my own life, especially significant ones, have been made as a result of spending time with God and the advice and encouragement of others. In the Netherlands, the church of Amsterdam50 calls this “obedience-based discipleship.” I like this. Two things come to mind in this phrase: obedience, an act of humility and worship exercised by faith in response to God and His Word; and discipleship, followers of Christ on mission living out their faith in the context of a community of believers or a church. These are two foundational aspects of our Christian walk: obedience and fellowship. This edition of Europe Update is about lives that have changed through spending time with God in His Word and being willing to obey Him, and lives that have changed from living in community with other Christ followers. Although these are not new concepts, the depth and richness of our lives as Christians are rooted in these simple principles.

Listening to God’s Voice by Naomi Triggs Amsterdam, the Netherlands Mirjam works for a Salvation Army housing shelter in Amsterdam. She sensed that God was nudging her to do a project with the women who live there. She has a good friend who works with street children in Bolivia, and a picture came into Mirjam’s mind: making soap chains to be sold to raise funds for those children! Not only would this be a good communitybuilding activity for the women in the shelter, but it also would benefit her friend and the children who face poverty in Bolivia. Yet, God had more in mind than Mirjam could have imagined. Days after thinking of the idea, she met a man who bluntly asked her, “Do you have any need for soap?” He just happened to find large blocks of soap from a high-quality bath company that no longer had any use for them — exactly what Mirjam needed to start the project! The women enthusiastically got to work. The soap chains were then brought to churches in Amsterdam

and other parts of Holland. Each of the women took turns attending these churches to raise money for Bolivia. Several of the women encountered God in personal ways during their visits. One woman, a Muslim, met another woman who had converted from Islam to Christianity and was personally asked if she knew about Jesus. Hearts are being transformed in the process of selling these little soap chains! Mirjam is in awe of all that has happened since she acted on God’s promptings in her heart. It seemed like such a simple and small idea. Now Mirjam realizes the great blessing in obeying and listening to God’s voice! She believes that this experience is only a small picture of what God wants to do in the future if she and others would only be quiet enough to listen and respond to God’s calling.

ocal Serve Day is a once-a-month event where we gather together on a Saturday morning to distribute the church into the local community to serve others. Serve Days are an easy, fun way to serve with others and make a difference in our community. Projects for September 18 include: • Florida Hospital Children’s Wing — Serve by cleaning the play room, playing games, singing and interacting with kids staying in the hospital. Must be at least 15 years old. • HOPE Foundation — Sort items in the thrift store and stock shelves in the food pantry. • Harvest Time International — Sort and pack items to be distributed to local organizations and abroad. • The Sharing Center — Stock shelves in the pantry, and help with painting and organizing the thrift store. Are you looking to get involved with serving in the local community? Why not sign up for our next Local Serve Day on September 18? It’s a fun way to meet others and meet the basic needs of those around us. To find out more about service projects and to register, visit our website (www. northlandchurch.net), and click on “Get Involved” and then “Serving Opportunities.” There you will find plenty of information about ways to serve here at Northland, in the community and abroad!

Putting Love Into Practice by Andrea Testa Torino, Italy Galatians 5:6 says, “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love” (NASB). I love this verse, and the fact that faith works through love. God has been teaching me how to put it into practice with Alessandro, a 32-year-old Italian chef who first came to our community last summer. His background was not easy; he had his share of problems and anger. He was very religious, a devout Catholic who went to Mass every Sunday, but he was so disappointed by the hypocrisy he had experienced that he moved from one group to another, hoping to find real Alessandro and Andrea. love and understanding. I tried to share the Gospel with Alessandro, but the words did not seem to have any impact. He was not refusing them, but he was saying: “I know Jesus died for me. I know I am a sinner. But I cannot experience God’s love; nobody loves me.” In the following months, he had pretty much the same attitude — we were ready to share a verse or principle from the Bible, but his ears were shut. I was reminded of Jesus’ practical way of loving us: He did not say many words, but He gave his own life. I realized that words were poor if not accompanied by real, practical love. I invited Alessandro to my house, and he taught me how to cook a wonderful dinner. Then we talked, and I listened to him. As time went on, we had more dinners like that, and now he has started listening to me and to others in the church as we encourage him to follow Jesus, read the Bible and put it into practice. Just as Jesus showed us love in the most practical way one can possibly imagine, we are called to love people in a very practical way. Only then may their hearts be opened.

There are projects for people of all ages on Local Serve Days.

Heaven Will Be Our Home Revelation 21:3-4, 18-19, 21, 23

God showed John what Heaven would be like. In that vision, John heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now God makes His home with people. He will live with them. They will be His people. And God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or sadness. There will be no more crying or pain.” An angel showed John Heaven’s Holy City. It was made out of pure gold, and city walls were decorated with every kind of jewel. The gates were made of pearls. The main street of the city was made out of pure gold. The city does not need the sun or moon to shine on it. God’s glory is its light. Heaven will be home for everyone who loves Jesus!

t Northland, we believe that Christ ordained certain holy rituals for the church to observe and through which His Spirit uniquely acts. These rituals are common to Christian faith communities around the world and are symbolic of spiritual events. They are baptism and the Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion or the Holy Eucharist. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper because Christ commanded us to remember His sacrifice. It serves as a reminder of the day when we will celebrate the feast with Him in heaven. Communion is typically observed the first Sunday of each month and at other spiritually significant times. There are many ways to observe the Lord’s Supper, and at Northland, there is variety in the Communion experience. The Northland worship planning team chooses the method that best fits the theme of the week’s worship service. Often we use the intinction method, where participants go to the elements, and take bread and dip it into the cup of their choosing. It is a wonderful application of faith for participants to have to get up and move, to exert energy and be intentional to get what God has for them. However, the more common method of passing

Introducing Children to Communion

T

here is no specific age when children are ready to begin participating in Communion. Children grow in their understanding of God at their own pace, and may join in communion whenever they have trusted Christ as their Savior. If you feel your children are ready, here are some suggestions for introducing them to this special sacrament. Before worship, read together how Jesus first served Communion to His disciples in Matthew 26:17-20 and 26-30. Explain that Christians continue to eat bread and drink grape juice to remember how Jesus died on the cross so that our sins are forgiven. Assure your children that the bread and juice are just symbols (like pictures) of Jesus and are not really parts of Him. During the reflection time in Communion, let them write

or draw a prayer, confessing their sins to God. Discuss their prayers during your ride home. Parents can sometimes feel overwhelmed or not equipped to talk with their children about their spiritual training. Northland’s Young Believers class walks children through what salvation means and goes into the instruction of Communion. During the fourth class, they are given the opportunity to take their first Communion. Northland also provides an excellent, simple New Believers Guide you can use to lead children through the salvation process; you can access that on our Children’s Ministries website (www.childrensministrywarehouse. com/2007/09/other-resources.html) or request a copy from a Children’s Ministries leader or volunteer. Northland’s Children’s Ministries team would love to assist you and answer your questions!

Available at the Northland Bookstore The Body Broken, by Robert Benson “The pathos of God for the torn and tearing body of Christ has seized the heart of Robert Benson. This book is a pure, passionate and prophetic cry to transcend all division and discord into reverence one another in obedience to the Master.” – Brennan Manning, author of A Glimpse of Jesus The Sacred Meal (“The Ancient Practices” series), by Nora Gallagher In her inimitable style of memoir and personal reflection, Nora Gallagher explores the beauty and mystery of this most fascinating of topics, the Lord’s Supper. Whether exploring the history of Christian Communion, taking us inside the workings of a soup kitchen, or sharing times of joy and sadness with friends, Gallagher reminds us what it means to partake of and be part of the body of Christ. The sacred meal that is part of our faith does more than connect us to the holy. It connects us to one another. Christ in the Passover, by Rose Publishing Celebrate your Jewish roots! The Passover is the Old Testament feast that celebrates and remembers God’s liberation of Israel from Egypt. It also foreshadows Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. This small pamphlet shows the parallels between the Passover in the Old Testament and the work of Jesus Christ as the perfect Passover lamb in the New Testament. This is a good way of explaining the Jewish roots of Christianity. The pamphlet also includes a Christian Passover Seder script, with everything you will need, including the recipes. In addition, the pamphlet also offers insights into the symbolism in the Lord’s Supper and the Last Supper Jesus shared with His disciples. For children: Communion: A Bible Study Wordbook for Kids, by Richard E. Todd Elementary-age children will be able to use this workbook to prepare for participation in their first Communion. These pages are designed for selfstudy with a minimum of supervision. The workbook includes teaching and activity pages, quizzes and mazes.

Spanish Ministry Gathering to Discuss Vision, Serving, Worshiping BY Mike Fernández Spanish Ministry Leader

O

n Friday, October 1, our Spanish ministry is planning to gather as a community to meet and greet one another and learn about upcoming classes, our vision as a ministry, and, very importantly, how we can serve one another and worship God. Please join us, bring a dish to share, and invite your Spanish-speaking friends, neighbors and family members who want to build relationships and learn more about our ministry. The event is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Student Ministries and Care Center at Northland at Longwood. It’s important to gather together for many reasons. Romans 14:7-8 says, “For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s” (ESV, emphasis added). Notice all the instances of “we” and “us” in these verses. As a body of believers, we belong to God and are bound to one another as a community. Scripture says, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:24-25, ESV). It’s important to intentionally gather so that we can encourage one another and fulfill God’s royal law to love God and love others. Another reason to gather is because we all have been blessed with gifts and talents for God’s glory. Romans 12:4-8 says: “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully” (NIV). The church community is a living organism that is very intimate. For example, Ephesians 4:15-16 says: “Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (NIV). As you can see from Scripture, we are all connected and the body builds itself up in love as we do our part. What a privilege that the church benefits from your presence since you are God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10), and that you would receive the benefit from God’s other masterpieces in the church in building up the body of Christ. Let’s grow together in Christ Jesus. Please join us October 1 for a wonderful time connecting with others. They will partner with Kasr El Dobara’s Mercy Ministry, reaching out to the forgotten, orphans, elderly, disabled, homeless and sick in Cairo and Upper Egypt. They will visit and minister in orphanages, senior citizens’ homes and a children’s cancer ward. Ministry to the homeless in Garbage City (so named because the people living there literally live in a garbage dump) and the City of the Dead, where families exist among the tombstones of a cemetery, also will be part of their mission. In both areas, the team will pray with and for these souls and distribute practical items, such as food, blankets and hygiene products. Prayer walking in the ancient streets in Cairo and Upper Egypt will be a fitting conclusion to this mission of mercy.

She was welcomed home by her siblings, Gracey (11), Sophie (5) and Christopher (8).

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Using Evil for Good Scripture focus: Job 2:9-10 (NASB)

Worship focus:

Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Worship Christ today as our suffering Savior. He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. He took on our sin in His body on the cross, in order that we might have Life. We reflect His love when we share in the burdens of others.

summary prayer: O LORD my God, I called to You for help, and You healed me. In Your love, O LORD, You saved me. You brought me up from the grave; You spared me from going down into the pit. I will sing to You, LORD, and praise Your holy name. For You turned my mourning into dancing; You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give You thanks forever. (From Psalm 30)

NEXT WEEKEND: A Message from Dr. Joel C. Hunter | LOVE ONE AND OTHERS |

Loving the Guarded | Genesis 21:9-12
