ur aim is to make the weekly Sunday night community a place where relationships are built for the purpose of loving and serving others. Every week participate in worship and hearing God’s Word, then stay afterward for a way to respond together. These are informal ways to gather for a few minutes or as long as you like.

Representatives from Frontline Ministries were there to share what they are doing to spread the Word among the youth of today.

“ For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink …”

Mount Dora come in. Donate to the Love Collection as often as you can. God will use you to bring physical and spiritual food to a needy family in our community. One more thing: in the Matthew 25 passage (verse 40), Jesus reveals that when we feed a hungry person, we are not just benefiting that person; we are actually feeding Christ! So know that your offering is special to the Lord! For more information on how you can serve Christ through the Northland at Mount Dora Love Collection, connect with Ann South (south4@comcast.net), Diane Brooks (diane.brooks@nljc. com) or Sharlee Hollingsworth (shollingsworth2@cfl.rr.com). >>> www.facebook.com/northlandmountdora

n this passage, Jesus teaches us about one of the marks of a follower of Christ, namely that believers are concerned about the practical needs of others. Hunger and thirst are very real conditions in northeastern Lake County today. And Jesus wants to work through our Northland at Mount Dora family to provide very real relief. That is why we are restarting the Mount Dora Love Collection. You are invited to bring a food item to worship with you on Sunday morning. Our Northland Love Collection team will ensure that your offering is delivered to a local ministry that is feeding the poor. Now through the end of October, we will be donating to Lake Cares, a food bank in the heart of Mount Dora. Lake Cares already has ministered to thousands of families in northern Lake County and wants to be prepared to care for thousands more. This is where God’s people at Northland at

JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

I

am Jeremy Jobson, the site minister of Northland at Oviedo, and all of us here who consider this our faith family are so glad you decided to join us this week! Each week we gather here on Sunday to worship God for who He is and what He has done, and then we seek to respond to the call on our lives throughout the rest of the week in the context of Christian community. We do that in many ways, including small groups and Bible studies, as well as classes and prayer meetings. We have lots of fun fellowship gatherings, as well as lots of people actively serving in our community in many ways. On Sundays, we have a full array of worship and ministry experiences for you and your entire family, from the main worship experience in the auditorium to all the options for your kids: nursery, early childhood, grade school, middle school and high school! Your kids will be loved, taught about God and challenged to bring glory to His name in their lives … and we hope each of you are too! Each week there are lots of easy ways to stay connected. Check out this page in the newspaper, especially the columns on the right with stuff happening right now; pick up the Monthor Week-at-a-Glance fliers available every Sunday with your paper; check out our Northland website (www.northlandchurch. net/locations/Oviedo); or check out our vibrant and active Facebook Page (facebook.com/northlandoviedo), where you

can find our most up-to-date fliers and media, plus many people post pictures, thoughts, prayers and more for one another. The best part: You do not have to join Facebook to view all this useful stuff! If you are new, be sure to say hi to someone on our team. If you are already a part of our regular faith family, hello! We really appreciate each and every one of you and want to be sure we are not only serving you well, but, more importantly, challenging you to live for the glory of God! We know that best happens for all of us in the context of relationships, not moments passing one another by. So get connected! Join a small group or neighborhood gathering, serve on Sundays or in the community, come out to a fellowship or prayer event, or just simply say hi to the person next to you right now, and maybe even ask that person to pray with or for you! Our hope is that no one will ever come in and leave here alone, unconnected or unsure about what’s next! As we say around here, “Be a part of it with us.”

“ Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.” –Hebrews 12:28 (NIV)

Fun at Local Serve Day

Get Involved With the Disaster Response Team

Join us next time: October 23.

Prepare loved ones for disaster as part of National Preparedness Month. BY GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads

S

ince the initial Disaster Response (DR) team volunteer kickoff event, held in August 2009, the Northland Disaster Response team has grown to more than 650 members registered for one or more of the specialty areas. The skill set represented is remarkable, and work experiences from every walk of life combine to produce a well-rounded team. Each member has completed various levels of training. Our goal is to provide opportunities for service at all levels, from local engagement, where you can receive on-the-job training, to national and international response, requiring more specific certifications. September is National Preparedness Month, and we want to encourage those who are not part of our response teams to prepare as well. Please prepare your families, children, pets, businesses, coworkers, neighbors and anyone with special needs for disaster. The key steps are to: get a kit, make a plan, be informed and get involved. You can find detailed information for each step at www.ready.gov. Northland has many volunteers involved, and during the past year, DR team members have willingly and steadfastly trained and served both local and national communities. Although much has been done, much remains to be done. Here are a few ways you can connect: • The Northland Disaster Response Team Executive Leadership Committee, made up of congregation members with extensive emergency management/ response training, education and experience in USAR, disaster recovery and response, hospitality, and the

human resources and legal fields, is ready to provide new and exciting direction to the DR team managers (team leaders) of each discipline (community) using best practices and FEMA models for planning, organizing, training and empowering each and every team member so that we can better serve those in need during times of disaster. Contact us if you are interested in serving on the Leadership Committee. • The mobile kitchen team is planning multiple outreach activities through the end of the year. If you are interested in serving here, review the Disaster Response page on the Northland website (www.northlandchurch.net), and join the team. No particular skills are necessary; we will provide on-the-job training. • The mobile medical unit has arrived at Northland, and a medical team has been working together on the requirements, equipment needs and supplies necessary to mobilize the unit into the community. If you are interested in helping with the equipment list, contact us. • Volunteer DR team managers are needed to provide leadership on the Community, Minor Repairs and Construction (new), and Away Assessment (new) disciplines. Co-leadership opportunities exist on all teams. Do you have what it takes to be a disaster response leader? Find out at an informational meeting October 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in rooms 4209-10 at Northland at Longwood. Here you’ll learn all about the leadership positions available and the commitment required for each team designation. We’re looking to build a team made up of congregation members who will receive extensive training in disaster recovery and response. Help provide new and exciting direction to this ministry, which serves those in need during times of disaster. To register, visit the Disaster Response page on the Northland website (www. northlandchurch.net) or contact Gretchen Kerr (407-949-7190 or gretchen.kerr@northlandchurch.net).

Answer: LIVE AT PEACE

Love your Enemy Romans 12:14-21

Bless those who hurt you. Be joyful with those who are joyful. Be sad with those who are sad. Agree with each other. Don’t be proud. Be willing to be a friend to people who aren’t considered important. Don’t think that you are better than others. Don’t pay back evil with evil. Be careful to do what everyone thinks is right. If possible, live in peace with everyone. Do that as much as you can. Don’t try to get even. It is written, “I am the One who judges people. I will pay them back,” says the Lord. So do just the opposite. If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. Don’t let evil overcome you. Overcome evil by doing good.

No. I’m a Fred.

Draw a picture of a group of people who are living at peace with one another.

Best Fred forever!

Secret Church Groups Meeting in Oviedo

S

ecret Church, an exciting new endeavor at Northland at Oviedo, is sparking a lot of interest. The groups were inspired by gatherings of the same name that are in their fourth year and have been written about in a new book, Radical, by David Platt. David Platt is the pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama. Pastor Platt has taught the Bible around the world and has a passion for disciple-making. He tells the story of meeting with pastors in the Sudan for a morning of teaching – pastors who met risking their lives. During the session, they took notes furiously, rarely looking up from their notebooks. Later they shared with him the realization that it was their responsibility to take what they were learning back to their communities and to share it with everyone as quickly as possible. This experience, along with many others in countries such as China, provided the impetus for Secret Church, an in-depth plan for Bible study and prayer, connecting the body of Christ to His Word and one another. It has created quite a stir around the globe and has landed here at Northland at Oviedo this fall.

For Jeremy Jobson, pastor of Northland’s Oviedo congregation, the inspiration was to bring this sense of urgency and worldwide perspective to his congregation in the context of community, a passion of the Oviedo congregation’s since its inception. People with and without a biblical education are being awakened to the gift of Scripture that we all have in this country, and are learning what they can do with it, and how, for the glory of God! There are currently 16-plus Secret Church groups meeting in the Oviedo area, involving more than 200 people. Find one on page 2 of this paper, or consider starting a group of your own! BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

LOVE ONE AND OTHERS Loving Enemies Scripture focus: Romans 12:14-21 (NASB) Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord. “BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Worship focus: Worship God today for His redeeming love. He loved us when we were still His enemies, and sent His Son to reconcile us through His sacrificial death on the cross. It is through His sacrifice that we can have eternal life.

summary prayer: Dear God, As you draw me ever deeper into your heart, I discover that my companions on the journey are women and men loved by you as fully and as intimately as I am. In your compassionate heart, there is a place for all of them. No one is excluded. Give me a share in your compassion, dear God, so that your unlimited love may become visible in the way I love brothers and sisters. Amen. — Henri Nouwen

NEXT WEEKEND: A Message from Pastor Anatoly Kalyuzhny | New Life Church, Kiev, Ukraine | Joined by the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS I ask You, O Lord, the One who died on the cross and took the punishment for all my sins, to grant me Your heart of forgiveness. I, ________________________________________________, hereby declare forgiveness toward _ ____________________________________________ . By the power and love of Your Holy Spirit, I purpose to think well of _____________________________________________. I purpose to speak words of blessing into this person’s life instead of curses. I ask You, Lord, to help me see this person as You see him or her and to forgive this person as You have forgiven me (Matthew 6:12). By faith, I believe You will bring glory to Yourself as I receive and extend Your forgiveness. May this act of faith and obedience be used by You to bring about Your will and Your Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
