ext Sunday is the launch of a brand new preaching series

by Pastor Joel, and I want you to know how significant his teaching is for us as a Sunday night community. The series, titled “Respond to God,” will lead us right up to the season of Advent.

What’s so special about this series?

First, as God’s creation, we acknowledge that our Creator is an initiator. From Genesis to Revelation, we know Yahweh as One who is involved with His Kingdom, guiding His people and shaping our lives as we interact with Him. God did not create and walk away, but rather is immanent and initiating the advancement of His Kingdom all around the world. God did this thousands of years ago, and He does so today.

Second, we take our cue from the Creator. The model we have in Scripture is one that shows God sending His Son, Jesus, to redeem and engage creation. Our High Priest walked this earth and lived out a life of submission and abiding with the Father. The Gospels give us great stories of the Messiah interacting with humanity, and our interaction with Jesus compels us to serve and love in the same manner.

That leads to the final point. Every weekend we gather to worship God for who He is and what He has done. When we experience the holiness and goodness of God together, we are in

awe of an endless list of reasons to celebrate God. Throughout history, those who have encountered Yahweh have responded to Him in numerous ways, many of which are similar. Pastor Joel will lead us in identifying seven responses that we can share together in loving God and serving others. The responses: Worship God Serve Others Read Your Bible Be in Community Pray Live Generously Share Your Story Along with Pastor Joel’s preaching, a new portion of Northland’s website will showcase each week a means for living out these responses. I want to encourage everyone to commit to these next seven weeks, to remember God’s greatness and the beauty of His holiness, and to discover new (and old) ways of hearing from God and, in turn, loving others better.

I

am Jeremy Jobson, the site minister of Northland at Oviedo, and all of us here who consider this our faith family are so glad you decided to join us this week! Each week we gather here on Sunday to worship God for who He is and what He has done, and then we seek to respond to the call on our lives throughout the rest of the week in the context of Christian community. We do that in many ways, including small groups and Bible studies, as well as classes and prayer meetings. We have lots of fun fellowship gatherings, as well as lots of people actively serving in our community in many ways.

On Sundays, we have a full array of worship and ministry experiences for you and your entire family, from the main worship experience in the auditorium to all the options for your kids: nursery, early childhood, grade school, middle school and high school! Your kids will be loved, taught about God and challenged to bring glory to His name in their lives … and we hope each of you are too!

aroundnorthland Three Receive Joel C. Hunter Scholarship

T

he Joel C. Hunter Scholarship has been awarded to three Northlanders this year: William Owen McAuliff IV of Altamonte Springs, Brock Terwilleger of Sanford, and Courtney N. Walmer of Oviedo. Each received $1,700.

The scholarship was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Read about this year’s recipients below.

Sports Ministry.

William has participated in two Distributed Journeys to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where the teams helped with relief and reconstruction efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

“Interacting with those survivors has shaped … how I perceive tough situations in my personal life,” he says. “If a person can continue to trust God even as their world is literally being blown apart, then how much sense does it make for me to complain about the trivial troubles that I encounter?”

William Owen McAuliff IV

Brock graduated from International Community School in June. Throughout high school, he served Saturday nights at Northland in Servant Leadership with the setup crew and LUGRox. Each year he mentored a group of 15 middle school boys on Saturday nights, also helping on the two retreats each year. He volunteered more than 500 hours.

Brock has made four two-week trips to Egypt to use his martial arts gift to serve as a coach at the Wadi Sports Camp in Cairo. He also traveled to Beijing, China, where he visited Chinese schools, serving as an ambassador for the International Community School and sharing the gospel with Chinese students.

Also, he has helped low-income families provide Christmas for their family through Harvest Time International, and has helped monthly for the past four years with the FAME2K Karate Tournaments, among other things.

His educational plans include pursuing a political science degree, then a law degree at the University of Florida.

He would like to work with International Justice Mission, a human rights organization that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. An IJM representative visited Northland, and he says, “The Lord has used this to create a passion in me to want to help others

William graduated from Altamonte Christian School this June and was accepted at Columbia University in New York, where he hopes God will use him “as a light.” He is interested in the field of sustainable development, which he feels would allow him to help communities in practical ways and to work with likeminded groups to better care for God’s creation and its people.

He is open to God’s leading to help him serve others.

At Northland, he was involved with the high school Servant Leadership, helping the setup crew for LUGRox. For three years, he served as a LUGRox captain Saturday nights, in charge of planning and presenting a lesson and discussion for a small group of middle school boys.

“Billy has committed, and demonstrated for all those around him, to live a life above reproach as an example for Christ to all those he comes in contact with,” Rudy Tamez, Northland minister to students, said in a letter of recommendation.

As a freshman, he learned to play guitar, and he says, “God has opened up several opportunities for me to use the talents that He has given me.” Those opportunities include leading worship for ministries at Northland, Palm Springs Drive Baptist Church, Altamonte Christian School and the Wantok

Margi McCombs, Northland’s executive director of Equipping and International Community School founder, said in a recommendation letter, “It is his determination to focus on a course of action, influence and lead those around him, and follow through on his intended objective that convinces me of his potential for success.”

Courtney N. Walmer

Courtney is a University of Central Florida student majoring in political science, pursuing a minor in nonprofit management. She co-founded the nonprofit Kingdom Noise Inc., which serves to offer hope and inspiration to the vulnerable through education and mentorship.

For Kingdom Noise, she raised more than $8,000 from the first 5K Run for Hope in May 2009, and held two large soccer tournaments in Swaziland, Africa, among other things.

Courtney’s goal is to receive a master’s degree in social science education from UCF. She wants to become a teacher of social science to broaden students’ perspective on the world in which they live, and mentor to students. She would like to remain with Kingdom Noise as president.

Courtney has been treasurer of the American Humanics Student Association, community service chair of Sigma Phi Lambda, and founder of Hoppy Easter, which assembled and delivered more than 3,000 Easter baskets to children in area hospitals and homeless shelters.

“Like John, I would like to be [Christ’s] follower, a voice of one calling in the desert,” she says. “I want to further His Kingdom. I want to be a small part of bringing Heaven to Earth.”

Sean Cooper, Northland’s Sunday night minister, said in a recommendation letter, “Courtney … demonstrates true servant leadership with her family, in her community involvement and in building up those around her. … Courtney continues to pursue her education while also applying her skills and experience to the needs of homeless in Central Florida as well as expanding her influence around the Kingdom.”

n any given day, we have a number of congregants and people in the community who call asking for assistance with a variety of things that are usually needed within a relatively short time period. While many of these needs can be met during a Local Serve Day or other large serving event, sometimes we need the help of volunteers who are available on a much shorter notice.

Requests have included things such as assistance with moving/packing, transportation to church and help with learning to write a resume. New, and sometimes unique, requests for help come up all the time. We realize you will not be available to help every time a need arises, but with enough willing hearts, we will be able to meet the needs of those who call upon us, thereby physically “being the church” in a very practical way for those around us.

If you are willing to be contacted regarding opportunities to serve others on a somewhat “on-call” basis, e-mail your name, e-mail address and phone number to Dana Kobosky, director of Life Service (serve@northlandchurch.net).

Requests for help usually will be sent out via e-mail, and it will be up to you to respond if you are able to meet that particular need. If we had a list of a hundred or more volunteers to contact, we expect to be able to easily meet the needs of most everyone who asks! What a great way to “be the church” not only for those within the Northland community, but also for those who may not know Christ yet!

Mothers Find Fellowship, Support Through Moms4Moms

A

little more than four years ago, my adventure in motherhood began. While the journey looked appealing, my initiation was less desirable. My world soon became consumed with feeding, diapering, wiping spit-up, feeding again, diapering again and so on.

Every once in a while, I would get some sleep. What had once seemed it would be a magical season of my life soon became a reality that often felt lonely. Yes, my precious newborn son was there, and even my spouse on most occasions — but I knew I needed someone with whom I could connect, someone who could sympathize with the physical and emotional pain and the frustration of raising a little one.

Thankfully, God knew my need. Through a series of dinner groups, I met two other mothers with sons the ages of mine.

And, although I was working, they continued to communicate with me and orchestrate get-togethers for us all, both with and without children. We were able to share tips on what to feed our boys, how to handle the temper tantrums (the children’s and the mommies’), how to find alone time with God even with small children at your heels, and even how to rekindle romance with our spouses after having a child. As our sons grew, so did our relationship.

Because of the need within Northland, the ministry of Moms4Moms was born two years ago. We knew that other mothers could benefit from the same type of relationship that we were

experiencing, and receive vital support in their new role as mom.

Modeled after many other moms ministries, Moms4Moms seeks to help mothers connect with one another, celebrate motherhood, meet the needs of those around them, and experience God’s love together through relationships and resources.

Moms4Moms meets once a month in the fellowship hall at Northland at Longwood, either on Mondays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. (child care provided), or Sundays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Registration is required. Connect with us immediately, and join our weekly playgroups.

T

he Moms4Moms ministry, which celebrates a woman’s role as a mother – meeting needs, making connections, and experiencing God’s love through relationships and resources, wants you to know about the opportunity it has for experienced mothers to serve in a mentor role, walking alongside younger mothers.

Moms4Moms mentors offer voices of perspective on mothering, womanhood and relationships based on biblical principles and their own experiences. They offer wisdom, hope and encouragement. They share with moms currently serving on the front lines of family life. By talking, laughing and crying with these moms, and listening to them, the mentors create the personal relationships that women need and desire. By praying with and for them, the mentors lift these women and their families to the Lord.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES

Preaching the message this weekend: Anatoly Kalyuzhny, Senior Pastor, New Life Church – Kiev, Ukraine Pastor Anatoly Kalyuzhny is a third-generation Christian. His family was part of the underground church during the iron fist rule of the Soviet Union era.

His father was a pastor. Anatoly, one of 12 children, studied music and philosophy, but after two years of study, he was kicked out of the university because of his refusal to become a communist. Anatoly spent the next 15 years as part of the underground church, leading youth ministry efforts throughout the Soviet Republics. He connected with various ministries in the United States, Canada and Europe to help produce materials for the underground church. He faced many difficulties with the KGB due to his dedication to his ministry.

Anatoly started New Life Church after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Starting with 50 members, it has become the largest evangelical church in Ukraine. New Life Church is part of the Independent Evangelical Churches of Ukraine, which unites more than 120 churches in 17 regions of Ukraine. Pastor Anatoly was trained in theology at Ukraine Biblical Seminary, established in Kiev by Dr. Richard Watson, former dean of Reformed Theological Seminary. He also is involved in the leadership of the World Evangelical Alliance for Ukraine.

Joining us in worship this weekend: The Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus The Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus was established by Roger McMurrin in 1993. His goal was to introduce the Ukrainian audience to the great sacred masterpieces of Western classical music, especially those that were forbidden in this country during the 70 years of Soviet rule.

Since 1993, the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus has grown into the largest private orchestra-choral group in Ukraine. It comprises 100 singers and 65 orchestra players. The instrumentalists are the best master players among the six state orchestras; these individuals were handpicked to make up this dynamic symphony.

“Many people ask me, ‘You work with musicians around the world – what do you think of Ukrainian musicians?’” Roger McMurrin says. “Ukraine has some of the finest instrumental and vocal talent in the world. The land of Horowitz, Prokofiev and Isaac Stern is still producing the premiere talent for the world stage.” Music Mission Kiev is the nonprofit organization through which the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus operates, primarily in Kiev, Ukraine, but also in the United States. In addition to the ministry of music, Music Mission Kiev also operates a variety of care ministries to orphans, widows and the people of the former Soviet Union.

Perfect Love

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Worship focus: Worship God today because He is love. This is how God showed His love to us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

If we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.
