AMAZING GRACE!

The people of Northland are eyewitnesses to what God is doing as we link together for worship and service everywhere, every day. That cannot be quantified, but the numbers can be inspiring. ... Together at more than 260 live worship services at the Longwood, Oviedo and Lake County sites, at prisons and jails throughout Florida, and worldwide via the Web, we worshiped God for who He is and what He has done.

Volunteers packed 660,000 meals – enough to fill two shipping containers – for earthquake survivors in Nepal. 60 people are receiving seminary-level training via Leadership Cohorts to oversee clusters of distributed churches both locally and globally. 127 people are being trained in how to be better leaders in an Acts 2 church structure. 179 families or individuals signed up to lead a 9-Week Feast in their homes, moving toward forming personal churches.

People read our daily liturgy at bible.northlandchurch.net more than 57,000 times. More than 1,500 prayer requests were posted and Northlanders prayed over those requests 130,000 times at pray.northlandchurch.net. ResourceWell.org, where an entire three-year children’s curriculum is hosted for free download, was visited by almost 50,000 people from 177 countries. People speaking 120 languages and dialects, including Croatian, Slovenian and Maltese, spent nearly half a million minutes exploring Resource Well. Northland’s Prison & Jail Ministry is now reaching every male youthful offender in the state of Florida. Using Google’s Chromebox for Meetings, mentors are connecting weekly via video conference with 14- to 17-yearold boys who have been convicted as adults.

An average of 250 men and women worshiped live with us each weekend from behind bars.

We established Distributed Training Centers for networks of church planters in Haiti, Cuba, South Africa and Orlando. Among these sites, almost 500 leaders are being trained. Several more Distributed Training Center sites are in discovery in 10 countries throughout the world. 177 people served on 11 Distributed Journeys to six countries – including Swaziland, Brazil, Costa Rica and Ukraine. Work on the field included ministry to orphans, medical and dental outreach, community development, construction, VBS programs, evangelism and Bible studies. People spent 1.7 million minutes watching videos on Northland’s YouTube channel, including our top video for 2015, “Open the Eyes of My Heart,” featuring special guest Christopher Duffley, a blind and autistic singer and multiinstrumentalist. Northlanders supported 72 missionaries around the globe, nationally and locally. Visitors viewed our site from more than 100 different languages, including Tsonga and Serbian. We also launched live streaming services interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing. People from more than 127 countries worshiped online more than 115,000 times. Worshipers connected with us regularly from Iceland, Ukraine and Pakistan.

Prison ministry volunteers traveled more than 20,000 miles to bring live worship and Bible studies to our congregants behind bars. 6,000 prayer requests were collected from our congregations behind bars and prayed for. Additionally, mentors travel every other week to meet in person with

Northlanders joined with the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness in a “surge” to identify chronically homeless veterans in the region and connect them with programs that can help. We hosted a diverse panel of religious leaders driving a movement toward racial reconciliation during a community forum moderated by Orlando Sentinel columnist Darryl E. Owens. The church also hosted local pastors and community leaders as mayors from Seminole County explained what they are doing to ensure fair treatment of all citizens in the wake of riots in Ferguson and Baltimore.

52 people either accepted Christ or rededicated their lives to Him through Celebrate Recovery. 3,500 volunteers participated in local serving projects and events. 12,673 pounds of groceries were donated during the Red Bag project to food pantries in Seminole County schools that feed homeless students and their families. 500 bags filled with school supplies were also collected.

youthful offenders. 1,529 people from throughout the community have attended anti-human trafficking meetings. Northland partnered with Mission 21, an anti-trafficking service provider based in Minnesota, to plan a “dream trip” to Florida for survivors of sex trafficking. 300 people took to the streets of Longwood for our 121Hope 5K, benefiting ConnectCity, one of the few residential facilities in Central Florida serving adult female survivors of sex trafficking.

Members of our Disaster Response team volunteered nearly 1,900 hours and served 4,560 meals through the mobile kitchen. The Adoption & Foster Care Ministry hosted a live Empowered to Connect simulcast conference, empowering families to better understand how to deal with kids coming from trauma. Our Welcome Desk volunteers and staff members spent 6,732 hours serving the congregation and answered more than 13,000 phone calls.

LifeHope served 800 people with housing, transportation, utilities and other needs.

600 volunteers dedicated more than 41,600 hours as ushers and greeters.

The LifeHope Childcare Center opened to serve single mothers working to achieve their employment and educational goals.

During child sponsorship weekend in The Hub, so many wanted to sponsor children that we had to start a waiting list.

We came alongside 65 families and 165 children with Christmas House, a fun and festive shopping experience for parents facing financial challenges.

Tech volunteers put in more than 2,000 hours running cameras and serving in the control room.

Welcome team volunteers made 1,589 calls and spent more than 1,284 hours following up with 1,324 first-time visitors and 88 new believers. Hundreds of folks at Longwood stopped by The Hub during the year, many responding to specific ministry highlights and to sign up for events or classes.

More than 200 children asked Jesus into their hearts at Children’s Church this year. In response to the decision to follow Jesus, many children were baptized, with family and friends present to celebrate. The average weekly attendance for Children’s Church at Longwood was 762, with more than 375 volunteers giving their time to teach and support the children and families each week. 112 young artists attended Worship in the Arts Camp – which provides an encouraging environment for spiritual growth with instruction in the disciplines of music, acting, dance, visual arts and technical production. Children’s offerings exceeded $14,000, supporting 12 local and global missions organizations. More than 2,000 dads and daughters bonded at the daddydaughter dance, with an amazing team of volunteers serving them at this annual event.

400 student volunteers hosted Northland’s first ever Joy Prom, welcoming 100 students with disabilities to a formal event designed to celebrate God’s love for each of us. Buddy Break, which provides respite care for parents who have children with special needs, has grown to serve more than 45 children monthly. FaithAbility, a monthly Bible study, worship and community service group for adults with intellectual disabilities, has

118 students were baptized this year during two separate LUGrox services and at the Doulos Retreat. Our staff and volunteers served more than 400 middle school and high school students and their families through our weekly programs (LUGrox and IAMTHIRD). 22 students from eight colleges around the country interned in seven departments this summer. Through discipleship groups, 192 high school students are praying and thinking about, and engaging in, God’s call to be on mission in this world.

Access Ministries’ Sunday school programs for children and teens with special needs have grown to serve an average of 40 children each weekend.

Celebrate Recovery at Longwood celebrated its sixth anniversary, with more than 300 consecutive Friday nights … including holidays! Attendance at meetings totaled more than 5,396 for the year, including 289 young people attending The Landing, for teens.

Roughly 1,480 people are forming the church in their context through 74 personal churches. grown to more than 50 participants providing more than 600 hours of service to the community. 1,525 lives were saved as a result of blood drives at Longwood. Access Ministries opened new Bible study classrooms for teens and adults with intellectual disabilities.

68 couples completed the Marriage Prep Class, which has been serving couples for 17 years. More than 1,800 couples have gone through this comprehensive course. More than 90 people participated in GriefShare and received hope and help after losses of spouses, siblings, friends, family members and children.

Hundreds of couples were blessed by marriage classes, including the Marriage Preparation Class, The Art of Marriage, Marriage Oneness and Marriage 911.

312,000 people from 204 countries hit Northland’s website 1.8 million times.

Nearly 1,200 attended the Women’s Community Bible Study, representing more than 16,725 hours of women studying God’s Word.

106 individuals attended Marriage 911. More than 27 leaders and volunteers participated in caring for those who attended.

152 women participated in the Foundations Bible Study for Women for new believers. Many have gone on to serve in the church and on Distributed Journeys, and, perhaps most telling of all, have been leading their family members to Christ as well.

New participants and those continuing to participate in the Divorce Recovery ministry totaled 212 this year. More than 20 lay leaders served in this ministry.

We hosted many students from Mission to Japan, who met at Longwood to study English and the Bible.

1,500 people came out to the Family Fall Festival. 180 high school students volunteered their time and talents serving middle schoolers through Setup Crew (freshmen) and Servant Leadership (grades 10 to 12).

20 candidates were trained and commissioned this year as new Stephen Ministers, bringing our total to 30 active Stephen Ministers who walked beside many people who needed one-on-one care.

More than 250 new Bibles were provided by the generosity of the bookstore patrons for prison ministry, schools, veterans events and the homeless. Additionally, hundreds of used Bibles were donated to the bookstore for local homeless and prison ministries. Affinity groups, such as Moms4Moms, Veterans for Christ, PetPals, Knit and Chat, Motorcycle Ministry, Single Adults, Sew and Serve, and Blended Families, provided fellowship and community.

Arabic and Hispanic ministries met Sunday mornings for worship and fellowship, inviting in many from our congregation and the community to be a part of their vibrant communities. Single adults attended more than 700 meetings and group events, which included feeding the homeless, visiting nursing homes, enjoying dinner and a movie, and participating in various Bible studies and groups.

Northland at Oviedo helped start a food pantry at Evans Elementary to serve students and families of the school. Oviedo’s congregation also filled 40 baby bottles with more than $650 in loose change to support clients of the Oviedo Crisis Pregnancy Center. Northland at Mount Dora changed its name to Northland at Lake County and broke ground on a new facility in the Lake Hills Plaza, with full operation and services set to begin in early 2016. Congregants at Lake County also have formed an ongoing partnership with Triangle Elementary School, providing the school with mentors, tutors and more. Lake County’s Student Ministry, Ignite, tripled in both attendance and leadership. The Children’s Ministry leadership team has doubled. There have been 20 professions of faith through Lake County’s Celebrate Recovery ministry this year. Northland’s CARE Ministries came alongside hundreds of people through Ministers on Duty, hospital visits, Divorce Recovery, GriefShare, His Way, men’s addiction recovery, women’s recovery, recovering couples groups, Life’s Healing Choices classes, Praxis anger management support, Bringing Baby Home classes and PetPals. Northland and Reformed Theological Seminary celebrated more than 20 years of partnership, equipping the saints and serving the community through the ministry of the Oviedo Counseling Clinic. 38 master’s-level graduate interns serving at the clinic provided more than 7,000 hours of counseling to 470 clients.

Human Trafficking Awareness Month Events Planned

anuary is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and 121Hope would like to invite you to participate in two powerful events. Join 121Hope on Saturday, January 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the eighth annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day event at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. Meet dozens of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, fair trade businesses, abolitionists, advocates, artists and community leaders. Make sure you stop by the 121Hope booth at the event to learn more about how Northland is responding to human trafficking in our community. This event is FREE and family-friendly. Paper Tigers is an intimate look into the lives of select students at Lincoln High School, an

The film examines the inspiring promise of trauma-informed communities – a movement that is showing great promise in healing youths struggling with the dark legacy of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). LifeHope Childcare Center Welcomes 2

he CARE Center is excited to welcome Amany Heneen as lead teacher for the LifeHope Childcare Center! Amany has been married to Northland elder Emil Samaan since 1992. They share four beautiful daughters: Hala, 21, a UCF student; Dina, a senior at Lake Mary High School; Rana, a sophomore there; and Amany Heneen Anne, a second-grader. Amany’s family has attended Northland since 2009 and is involved in various ministries, including Student and Children’s Ministries. She also serves in the Arabic congregation that started in 2012. Amany, who has a bachelor’s degree in social work, has experience working in Montessori schools in Egypt and the United States. Connect with Amany at amany.heneen@ northlandchurch.net. The CARE Center also gives a warm welcome to Michaela Bowen, a childcare worker at LifeHope Childcare Center. She will be providing lots of love to the infants and toddlers on a daily basis. Michaela is a University of Miami graduate with a degree in English and a minor in psychology. She enjoys serving in the youthful offenders prison ministry at Northland, spending Saturday mornings visiting incarcerated youths. Michaela and her family have been attending Northland since 1999. In her spare time, Michaela Bowen she enjoys running, reading, cooking and traveling.

Christmas House Update

hank you, Northland, for participating in our first ever Christmas House event! It was a huge success because of your giving and serving this Christmas season. Through the generosity, Northlanders were able to serve 65 families, or 165 children. More important than gifts, Northland volunteers and staff members were able to spend time with each family member and share some other wonderful opportunities they can take advantage of. Starting in January, all shoppers from the Christmas House are invited back to join a financial study, career coaching or parenting classes. We look forward to working with our families beyond the Christmas season!

Hub Helped Hundreds of Congregants Take Next Steps in 2015 For help with your next step, or to help others, stop by The Hub! BY REBECCA LANG

his was a busy year in The Hub. Hundreds of people responded to God’s call to take their next step. That next step was different for every person, and our Hub hosts were so honored and grateful for the opportunity to facilitate connections that helped folks on their journey toward connection, recovery and healing, service to others and growing in their relationship with Christ.

We started the year recruiting volunteers for the practical needs our various ministries have. Our congregation responded in a big way, and we were thrilled to welcome so many new faces to our volunteer teams. In March, hundreds of people stepped forward to help prepare for and support our annual daddy-daughter dance. More than 2,000 dads and daughters enjoyed a special night out, thanks to our volunteers’ time and efforts creating an amazing night. We also had an awesome night of worship led by Phillips, Craig and Dean, and a few weeks later welcomed Third Day. Both of these events were open to the public, so it was an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus not only to our congregation, but to others in our community. Thank you! As the year continued, we listened as Dr. Hunter unfolded the distributed church vision. So many people came forward to learn more about the vision and explore ways they could step into forming and finding their very own distributed church. It was awesome to see God stirring our congregation members toward building the church outside the walls of Northland, bringing the love of Jesus into their communities and reaching those not yet included. The Hub also served as a place for ministries to highlight their work. Many people responded to the weekly Hub emphasis. We had families come forward to host Japanese students and Ukrainian orchestra members in their homes. We also had more than 50 people respond to using their

pets to help spread love to elderly folks with our PetPals ministry. Nearly 40 people signed up to learn more about our hospital visitation team, and many people answered the call to serve in one of several CARE team ministries, including our new 121Hope anti-human trafficking ministry, the Prison and Jail Ministry, benevolence and much more. We are so excited to see where God will take us in 2016. We’ll have our regular weekly volunteer needs but are looking forward to offering the Finding Financial Freedom and Life in Community classes, hosting Dan Allender’s Effective Trauma Care and To Be Told workshops, and continuing our Belong membership classes. probably all too aware that middle school is just around the corner. Your “little kid” is beginning the journey into adolescence. Yikes! Need some help navigating through this transitional period? Check out JumpStart! Northland’s Student Ministries team is partnering with Children’s Ministries on this fun and relational program, designed to help your fifth-grader transition smoothly from kids church to LUGrox, our Middle School Ministry. Let’s face it, change can be scary at any age. JumpStart will help your soon-to-be middle schooler make the jump from one program to another … and have a blast along the way! We want to form a relationship with your kids that will continue through their middle and high school years so we can walk alongside them and support your discipleship efforts at home. They’ll also have a chance to connect with other kids their age, who are also making the jump to LUGrox. This is the sixth year we have offered JumpStart at Northland, and we have heard from many families how much it helped smooth this transition period. We are offering special sessions just for parents. It’s an opportunity to get some great advice from Pastor Brian and other ministry leaders, ask questions about our Student Ministries program, meet other parents, and become better equipped to disciple your child as he or she moves toward adolescence. The parent sessions are optional. Your kids can attend JumpStart on their own if you are unable to join us for the parent portion of the program. But (spoiler alert!) we have a great program planned that you won’t want to miss! The first JumpStart will be a pizza party on January 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Children’s Worship Wing. Senior Life Prep

Sundays, January 17 through March 6, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Gritter home, 101 Caspian Cove, Sanford. Senior Life Prep is a gathering for current high school seniors. They meet every Sunday afternoon for eight weeks for fellowship and teaching. This gathering is intended to help these students prepare for the phase of life after high school no matter what that looks like. Although most of the students will be entering college, the topics covered will not be college student-specific. Food will be provided.

Baptism Celebration

n November 21, students from third grade through high school publicly confirmed their faith with us through baptism. During the night, we were able to partner with parents and mentors of all ages as we baptized 58 middle school students. It was a time of great celebration as students showed their desire to be a part of our local expression of the church. Over the past few years, we have made an intentional effort to partner with parents and other family members to disciple their own children. The success of this effort was realized when we witnessed multiple parents, instead of relying on our staff, make the decision to baptize their own children. Thank you for always praying for, and partnering with, the Student Ministries team as we fulfill our call to walk alongside families as they disciple their children.

A weekday cooperative learning environment The Northland Cooperative School will enroll children who have reached the age of 2, 3 or 4 by September 1 into the 2-, 3- or 4-year-olds class, respectively. Prophets and Promises Celebration

very December, our first- through fifth-graders join together to celebrate what they have learned in Children’s Church about who God is and what He has done. This year, at our Prophets and Promises celebration, the children shared Bible stories and Scripture songs with family and friends. Through the lives of prophets from Elijah to Malachi, as well as in the amazing stories and letters of the early church found in Acts through Revelation, they have learned about their own relationship with God.

WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:1939; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives. All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
