“… how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?”

What’s Current What’s happening at Northland? Plenty! Here’s a sampling of the many upcoming opportunities to respond to God — to be involved in what He’s doing. …

A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR (Read about Pastor Joel at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter.)

Scripture Focus: John 3:1-13, 36 (NASB)

Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. ... He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

BE IN COMMUNITY.

Spark conversation in your community this week: • Reread the story of Nicodemus. He had a great deal of knowledge, but was searching for the truth. He came at night to the Light of the world. List all the things you know about Nicodemus. • How did all these things factor in to the way Jesus talked with him? • How would you describe the kingdom of heaven to an unbeliever? • How would you describe being born again to an unbeliever? • How does your spiritual understanding complete your life, and how can you share that with others?

Worship Focus:

Worship Christ today as the Reconciler. He came and died so we could be reconciled with God. He brought the kingdom of heaven to earth. Because of His salvation, we can have eternal life now, reconciling our spiritual and earthly lives.

RESPOND TO GOD by Dr. Joel C. Hunter PaRt 4: BE IN CoMMUNIty

I

f heaven is to come through us, then we must respond to God’s grace and goodness in our lives. There are countless ways we can do this: by worshiping God, reading our Bibles, sharing our stories, living generously, praying for and serving others .... But there’s one response that is necessary to sustain them all because unless we have encouragement and support from other Christians, we will not last long in doing any of them. I’m talking about “being in community.” God is a relationship who makes us for relationships. In Genesis 1:26, God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” (NASB). God’s name in Hebrew, Elojim, is a plural word used in a singular sense (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). The only time in the creation story when He says His creation is not good is when He looks at the man in the garden and declares, “It is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18, NASB). We are made for relationships. God created us to be together ... not just to belong to each other, but to belong with each other (Acts 2:42). Community isn’t affinity or an ideal that we try to realize, but a reality that we practice. How does that work? Growing up, I belonged to First Methodist Church of Shelby, Ohio. We would have potluck dinners, and the women cooked their favorite dishes — it was almost like a contest to see who could bring the absolute best. One time a little girl wanted to contribute something. So she got a box of animal crackers and set it right in the middle of all those fancy

dishes. I was just a young boy, 8 or 9 years old, and I was so curious as to what would happen to that little box of animal crackers in the midst of all those glorious dishes. The first woman who came through the line stopped at that box of animal crackers, very carefully opened it up, reached in and got one, turned to the woman behind her and said, “I got a gorilla.” She put it on her plate and continued on. Every lady after that reached in, turned to her neighbor and said, “I got a giraffe” or, “I got a lion” or whatever the animal was. The little girl was beaming! That is the character of community: Everybody’s important. Everybody has something to offer. Everybody is prized, regardless of what is offered. There’s a broader network of relationships God wants us to have. But we have to practice it. We must have other Christians, not just nice people, around us. We won’t be sustained in spiritual growth without someone pointing us to the Lord and encouraging us to walk with Him. Life tends to be about us unless we’re connected outside. You may remember my talking about how I don’t do “crazy” anymore. “Crazy” is hearing just the voices in your head and thinking they are reality. You know what is necessary for sanity? It’s godly outside voices that are saying different things to you than the voices in your head are saying. If we aren’t surrounded by Christian community, we tend to become withdrawn, or get depressed, or we tend to get too analytical or too afraid, and we pretty much drive ourselves “crazy.” Philippians 2:3-5 says: “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves” (NASB). The ground is level at the cross. Everybody is worthy of love and respect as far as God is concerned. The character of love is you think about somebody else’s needs before your own. I heard a story about a little girl coming home from church one time. She had written down a prayer for her to pray over and over again. When she got home, her mom asked to see the prayer. It read: “Lord, help me not to be OK, just because I’m OK.” This is the kind of person we need around us and that we need to be to others.

“That is the character of community: Everybody’s important. Everybody has something to offer. Everybody is prized, regardless of what is offered.”

Pray with me ... Lord, we give ourselves to You. We want You to have our minds so You can shape us. We want You to have our hearts so You can implant Your divine nature in us. We also want You to have our behavior so we will walk differently and live differently because we’ve heard Your Word. Come now, Holy Spirit; lead us and help us to learn what it means to be in community. In Jesus’ name .... Amen.

seRve GloBallY A Light at the End of the Street By Al and Val Bransdorfer

S

aving Grace in Uganda helps children who live on the streets of northern Uganda. Its program is set up in the city of Lira at a home called “Uncle Fred’s House.” This home is “a light at the end of the street” for hundreds of street children in need of help. Uncle Fred’s House is a place of refuge from the hunger, sickness and trouble that street children often experience. They come to get food, take a bath, wash their clothes, play and see the love of Jesus firsthand. When there is trouble in the community and a street child is killed or wrongfully imprisoned, the staff at Uncle Fred’s House becomes an advocate for that child. The love of God being demonstrated in all of these ways is the backbone of the relationships we have built with these children. Below is a story of one of the boys Saving Grace in Uganda has helped. Steven has one of the brightest and happiest smiles of all the boys who live at Uncle Fred’s House. But this was not always the case. Steven’s father died of AIDS, and six months later, his mother also died of AIDS, leaving four young children alone in their hut in the village of Bar Apwo in Lira District. Steven At only 5 years old, Steven was left alone to care for his 2-year-old twin brothers and his 3-week-old baby sister. Steven tried to find enough food for the four of them, but without anyone to help, it was impossible, and there was no way for him to feed an infant. After one week, his baby sister died in his arms. Someone in the community called a local orphanage, which came out to the home, along with the children’s aunt. Steven’s younger brothers were placed in the orphanage, and Steven stayed with his aunt, who was abusive. A 5-year-old is not prepared to do hours of labor, but that is what Steven was expected to do. His aunt would beat him if he did not get all of his chores done. One day Steven was beaten so badly that he fled to the town of Lira. After several days, Uncle Fred’s House children who were returning home from school found him collapsed and bleeding on the side of the road. The children told Uncle Fred, and he immediately ran to find Steven, gathered

him up in his arms, and took him back to the house to be cared for. Fred said it took several days for Steven to begin to speak about what had happened to him. As Steven revealed his tragedy, Fred held him close, and they sobbed together. That was four years ago. Steven came to live at Uncle Fred’s House, and he has grown into a fine young man who is happy and healthy. He is a very competitive soccer player and loves to play games, pray and sing worship songs to God, who has provided for his needs. Steven works hard on his schoolwork and is proud to be in the primary four grade level. He is a good friend and brother to all of the boys who live at Uncle Fred’s House. He is in charge of worship, playing the drums and helping to care for the younger children. Steven hopes to be a pilot someday. His beautiful smile shows how grateful he is to have a loving home and a hope-filled future. Uncle Fred’s House has been a home to more than 50 children, while close to 200 street children are in waiting. Saving Grace in Uganda opened a children’s village this year in order to accommodate these children. The children will be attending the new school this January while taking on responsibilities and experiencing what it is like to be in a family. They learn skills they would have been taught by their own families, such as house and yard chores, cooking,

The boys learn to plant and harvest crops. washing, planting and harvesting crops, husbandry and construction. By the time they become of age and leave the Uncle Fred’s House program, they are ready to go back to their land with full confidence that they are well-equipped to live on their own. But it doesn’t end there. Twice a year, these young men come back to the Uncle Fred’s House program to volunteer their time and help the new boys coming into the program. These young men have been taught the importance of giving to those less fortunate. It is a great joy to see a former street child become “a light at the end of the street” for others. seRve loCallY A Year in Service

Volunteers served more than 8,000 hours. You, too, can participate! By Dana Kobosky

A

s we approach the end of the year, I have had the opportunity to review all of our service opportunities in 2011. Once again, I am amazed by the number of people who have served and the projects in which we have been involved! At Northland, we talk a lot about taking worship “beyond these walls.” We know worship is not just something we do here in the sanctuary, but something we can take into our community through serving others. During 2011, Northland’s quarterly Local Serve Days brought more than 1,500 people together to serve in our community! In addition, groups have served at various organizations and locations each month. About 85 service projects took place this past year, and volunteers worked more than 8,000 hours! In fact, just a few weeks ago, a group of 200 people came together for 2 1/2 hours and packed 50,000 meals to send to the needy. That is proof of what amazing things can be accomplished when we come together for the benefit of others! I want to thank everyone who served others this year. Also, I know many of you serve in various ways throughout our community that are not recorded, and quietly go about

putting others before yourselves. Thanks to all of you for “walking your talk” and for sharing Christ with others in such a tangible and practical way. Even with all of those projects and volunteer hours, more needs to be done. We have truly been blessed with ample opportunities to reach beyond our walls and connect with schools, businesses and organizations in the community with the focus of not only improving our local community, but having a huge Kingdom impact. I am truly excited about what 2012 has in store for us! I want to encourage everyone to get involved in a service opportunity this year. Whether it is a Local Serve Day project or one of our ongoing opportunities, I know that everyone can do something and has much to offer. It is my prayer that this year we realize together we make the body of Christ, and each person has some part of service that is his or hers. I pray we remember that when it comes to service, no job is unimportant, and we are to be faithful with the time, talents and abilities that God has given to us. I challenge you to commit this year to serving with us. You can visit serve.northlandchurch.net and sign up for a service project this month, take part in our next Local Serve Day in January, or find an organization about which you are passionate and volunteer with it. Let’s make 2012 a year of service!

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

our purpose: Why we are here From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

our vision: What we see

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

our mission: What we do

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

northlandchurch.net

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

What is a “church distributed”?

Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities. If you wish to learn more about the church distributed, you may purchase the book Church Distributed, by Dr. Joel C. Hunter, at the Northland Bookstore or Amazon.com. All proceeds go to Northland.
