Scripture Focus: John 4:46-53 (NASB)

Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.” The royal official said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and his whole household.

Worship Focus:

Worship Christ today as our eternal Savior. He has no beginning or end. He is outside of time, yet completely in control of it. He is sovereign over the daily moments, the mundane hours and the divine appointments.

2011 year in Review:

Every Number Is a Story of Worship

hat a year 2011 was for our church, community and global partners! While being the church is not about numbers, sometimes it is — because numbers tell us a story. It is God’s story, true and compelling. What you’ll read here are pieces of that tale, indicators of the people and places that were positively impacted by the movement of Christ in you … Again this year, the financial commitment and response from our congregation was overwhelming. In fact, you brought in $723,000 more than the previous year to expand Kingdom opportunities. This was the first year that giving outpaced the previous year since the recession of 2008. Financial facts about how we ended the year: • Northland’s budget was $13,026,260, which was met with a $5,337 surplus. • The response to the “Less Is More” initiative reduced our mortgage debt by $569,683. • Additional offerings above budgeted needs for Local/Global Service, Benevolence, Distributed Journeys and the True North Foundation totaled $1,826,468. • Total giving of tithes and offerings was $14,858,065. Mind you, financial facts are just a glimpse of the work God has done within and through Northland this past year. We trust God moves in concentric circles beyond what our eyes can see and our hearts can comprehend, so what follows — while beautiful and inspiring — is but another fraction of who He is and what He has done. Our quarterly Local Serve Days brought more than 1,500 people together to serve in the local community. In addition, we had regular groups serving at various partner organizations and locations each and every month. Approximately 85 different service projects took place, and more than 8,000 hours were put in by volunteers for the benefit of others! LifeHope, our benevolence ministry, financially served 176 families and provided the support for nine families to transition out of homelessness and into apartment living. When Life Without Limbs author Nick Vujicic joined us for worship in March, more than 28,000 attended services. More significant was the hundreds of decisions made for Christ over the course of the weekend. As we moved through the year in worship, learning about our cravings and strongholds and turning toward God for help, ministry participation increased. Celebrate Recovery, one of our addictions recovery groups, welcomed 707 newcomers to its fold of 6,621 attendees and 12-step study participants. Approximately 5,400 people participated in staff and lay-led classes designed to equip all of us to better respond to God. Of those 5,400 congregants, nearly 3,200 were inspired to revolutionize their finances by becoming involved in the Financial Peace University initiative. In addition to supporting and brainstorming spiritual growth opportunities, your time and

gifts contributed to the establishment of the hopechang.es website, the training of 33 new Stephen Ministers, and the formation of a Prayer Team wholly dedicated to counseling new believers. 30,576. That’s how many prayer requests were received and lifted to God by the more than 200 members of the volunteer prayer team and those visiting the online prayer wall at pray. northlandchurch.net. Christmas Camp scholarship giving contributed to the highest rate of attendance at camp in recent history! As a result, 140 local high school students and 19 students from Brazil began this year with a new faith perspective because they got to close out the year in an energetic atmosphere of spiritual growth and fellowship. Our high school students weren’t the only youths to make significant strides into the Kingdom in 2011 — Children’s Ministries welcomed 1,004 children and saw hundreds accept Jesus into their hearts. The weekly Children’s Offering amounted to $16,459.35 and went to support local and global missions. Out of 296 volunteers serving in Children’s Ministries each week, 102 were new volunteers in 2011! The growth in willing volunteers was church-wide, as many set out to serve others. The care/call center team of 29 volunteers made 8,160 calls to attendees indicating an interest in being contacted — 1,059 of those calls were to first-time visitors, and 416 were to new believers. This body of believers is so grateful for the hours put in by those volunteers. That gratitude extends to the hundreds of others who served Communion, welcomed congregants, occupied the Welcome Desk, dusted off shelves, spent weekends teaching kids, and effectively and consistently gave themselves to the work of Christ at Northland. Northland at Oviedo’s move to Reformed Theological Seminary in November went smoothly, largely due to a committed team of volunteers. In their new home, they’ve seen

707 newcomers to Celebrate Recovery

1,000 churches planted in Africa attendance increase and expanded the site’s community presence. Our global presence saw expansion as well. Our pastors traveled to Africa throughout the year, training more than 300 African pastors to plant more than 1,000 churches. One of those newly trained pastors then turned around and trained 500 more pastors in the Democratic Republic of Congo! Africa was just one of 13 countries in which Northlanders got to make a difference in 2011. Twenty-six Distributed Journeys proved transformative for the 399 participants and resulted in five new ministry partnerships. The above is a beautiful snapshot of why Northland is known in our community and around the world as “the church that gives itself away.” May God continue to bless you and bless others through you as you serve Him in the coming year!

seRve GloBallY Distributed Journeys Adds 2 Trips to the 2012 Calendar! By Patti Harshey

Friends of Refugees summer Camp – Clarkston, Georgia Dates: June 16 to 23 Cost: Approximately $500 Age: This mission trip is appropriate for families with elementary-age children, middle schoolers with a parent, high school students and college students. Team leader: Erica Emler (erica.emler@northlandchurch.net) Every year, thousands of refugees come to the United States seeking a better life. In the early 1990s, the process of resettling refugees began in the community of Clarkston, Georgia, a small town located within metro Atlanta. Since this process began, approximately 60,000 refugees have been resettled in this area. With more than 150 ethnic groups represented within and around the city, Clarkston has been named “the most diverse square mile in America” by The New York Times. We will be sending a team to the Friends of Refugees Summer Camp. The weeklong camp focuses on getting refugee kids in the Clarkston community to come together for a few weeks of fun and fellowship. In a true camp-like atmosphere, the team will provide constructive, fun activities for children in first through eighth grades, while developing character and academic knowledge. Kuyasa – Cape town, south Africa Dates: July 15 to 30 Cost: Approximately $2,800 Age: 18-plus Team leader: Lauren Roberts (lauren.roberts@ northlandchurch.net) This Distributed Journey will follow the model of Kuyasa Empowerment by using a system of six separate Levels of Support to filter and sift the youths of the community. As they are educated, empowered and equipped, the desire is to have the means to move a select group of them forward, giving them greater opportunities along with increasing responsibilities and challenges to overcome. This learning-by-doing approach has been extremely successful. By doing this within the context of the community, home and family, the transformation has been much more permanent and complete. Growth and leadership become fully integrated into who they are and

their full identity, including the cultural context. This makes it all the more simple to re-approach their context to use the knowledge and skills with which they are equipped. The learning is a contextualized process, so the product and implementation of the learning remains contextualized. The goal, of course, is to identify the strongest leaders in the community and to offer them the opportunity to reach their full potential through holistic and experiencebased, hands-on learning. The entire process that moves them through the Levels of Support emphasizes that a true leader will empower those around him or her, that the most influential leader will give himself or herself away to see others move forward and plow back into their home community with the talents, resources and skills they have been given. At the end of this mission trip, a three-day backpacking trip and debrief in and around Zurich, Switzerland, is scheduled for those who wish to participate. n Saturday, January 14, we held our first Local Serve Day of 2012! Despite the chilly temperatures, people arrived with smiles on their faces, ready to spend the morning serving. It was exciting to see 400 friendly faces looking forward to making a difference in the local community. The Disaster Relief Kitchen Team served up a great breakfast while we enjoyed music with our amazing worship team. Our friends from Z88.3 also spent the morning with us! After a word from Pastor Kevin Urichko, the teams headed out across Central Florida to share Christ’s love with the community in a very tangible,

practical way. Serve Teams could be found preparing goods to be shipped to those in need, cleaning up local parks, helping to keep our waterways clean, caring for an elderly woman and even serving here at Northland in the Student Ministries building. Did you miss out on being a part of Local Serve Day? If so, the good news is we have Local Serve Day quarterly; the next one is April 14! In addition, you and your family can serve each month with Northland. We have plenty of opportunities every month for you to sign up and serve. About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.

What is a “church distributed”?

Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.
