Shielding Innocence

Organization seeks to prevent abuse.

C

aleb Grover is a licensed mental health counselor and has been seeing clients since 2004. After receiving his master’s degree in counseling and his master of divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary, he began Agape Counseling Center in 2007. He aligns his counseling and teaching expertise along with being a parent of two to educate others on how to prevent sexual abuse in children.

Kelly Winkler has been working as an exceptional therapist in the Orlando area since 2002. She served as a supervisor at Reformed Theological Seminary, worked as a clinical director at Willow Creek Church, and owns All Things Christian Counseling, a practice in Winter Park. Through her work and studies, and as a mom of three, preventing sexual abuse in children has become her passion.

Two years ago, Caleb and Becky Grover and Kelly and Mike Winkler came together as families to launch Shielding Innocence, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering parents and caregivers

to break the cycle of sexual abuse and harm by replacing the cultural norm with the narrative of God. On February 10 and 11, they will bring the Shielding Innocence seminar to Northland. They spoke about the organization with Melinda Rutland, who has attended Northland since 2001 and has served on the worship team and in Children’s Ministries for many years. Melinda and her husband, Jason, are also the parents of two daughters, ages 3 and 6.

Melinda: Tell us about starting Shielding Innocence.

Caleb: After years of counseling people who had suffered through complicated cases involving sexual abuse, affairs, divorce and trauma, I enjoyed seeing God’s redemptive work.

But I wondered how we could create a professional prevention program to reduce some of these situations.

Kelly: My husband, Caleb and I shared an office early in our practice. And our families were really close. Our children are best friends. When the topic of sexual abuse and prevention started surfacing in our lives and in the lives of our friends who are parents, we started working together to tackle the common factors and the gaps that exist. We would see Christian families with good intentions, but we noticed there were key elements missing.

Melinda: So, as a parent, I can’t help but ask for a “sneak preview” of some of this right now. What are some of those key elements that are missing?

Caleb: We want parents to realize they need to prepare for these conversations much earlier. Most parents think when their son or daughter is around 11 or 12 years old, they need to have an awkward, one-time discussion about sex. The difficulty is that if a child will be sexually abused, 63 percent of the time, it happens before they are 11. A child’s best defense against sexual abuse and harm is a relationship with his or her parent. We invest a lot of time covering ways to create that connection. It isn’t just one conversation about sex, and then you move on; it is a thousand conversations as you walk through life together.

Kelly: There are things we simply must talk to our children about because we live in such a sexualized culture. What do you say to your 6-year-old when a flier comes in the mail with a picture of a Hooters girl on it? If you crumple it up and tell her not to look at it, your response is teaching her something about her body. And your desire to shield her can lead her to believe you are not the person she should go to with her questions and feelings about sex. We give parents strategies to recognize and capitalize on opportunities to put God’s beautiful version of what sex is and how our bodies are made in the hearts of their children before evil or the world’s narrative takes hold.

Melinda: That seems so difficult. When you have a baby and you’re feeding the baby and he cries, you are taught that he probably has a little tummy bubble, and you can pat his back until he burps. Someone teaches you that. But nobody teaches you what to do when you take your kids to the ballet, and they see a bunch of men in semi-transparent leotards. I mean, what do you say?

Caleb: Those are exactly the things we talk about. We try to put guiding principles into place so you’ll know the whens and the whys of talking about sex. This will equip you with confidence to go into those types of situations.

Kelly: We also break down practical steps you can take in each age group, like birth to 2 years old for things such as body safety, what to do if your 4-year-old is playing doctor, things to talk about when your 9-year-old wants to go to a sleepover, or how to address times when your children are unsupervised around phones or the Internet. We all have those practical questions.

We all think about those things in our lives individually, but corporately as believers, we’re not talking about it. This is a chance to realize it isn’t just you.

Local Serve DAYS Back!

n Saturday, March 4, the blue Northland Serve shirts are returning! Throughout 2017 we will be coming together as a community once a quarter to put into practice what we have been learning as a church. The preaching series “Seeing the Kingdom” will be completed the week before, so this will be a great opportunity to practically apply this teaching.

Serve day will be a time when we gather as a large group in the morning at the Longwood site and then are sent to serve throughout the community with various projects. We will also have projects on the Longwood site, including cleanup from the Daddy-Daughter Dance and setup for Joy Prom. Project sign-ups will be available in the upcoming weeks. ‘Chosen’ Screening on February 11

21Hope will host a free screening of “Chosen,” a 20-minute documentary that tells the story of two “All-American” girls tricked into the sex trade. Eighteen-year-old Brianna was an honor-roll student and cheerleader, and worked at a local café.

Thirteen-year-old Lacy was an active member of her youth group and a volunteer in the community.

We invite you and your colleagues to join us for the screening and a brief follow-up discussion about the warning signs and ways to help potential victims remain safe. The presentation will take place Saturday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Northland at Longwood sanctuary.

Our desire is to notify as many members of our community as possible of this event, as no one is immune from the dangers and entrapment our youths face in today’s society. New Worship Site: Wayman Place

T

he 11 a.m. Sunday service now includes one more worship site. On January 8, Wayman Place, a senior living facility in Longwood, worshiped live during the 11 a.m. service for the first time. This was made possible by a Roku device, staff members who are eager to provide live worship to residents, and residents who are willing to join live worship in addition to an established weekly Bible study. This worship is yet another unique expression of Northland. Ivonne Schatte Joins as LifeHope Manager

P

lease welcome Ivonne to the CARE Center team. Previously at Northland, Ivonne was responsible for the translation of children’s curriculum material into Spanish and assisted the Distributed Church team as needed. Her new role will include day-to-day management with the LifeHope ministry.

Ivonne was born in Chile, grew up in Canada in the province of Quebec, and in 2009 moved to Florida with her husband, Jon, a native of Maryland. She is fluent in Spanish, English and French. Prior to joining the Northland staff, Ivonne did freelance translation and worked in video production with her husband. She has a master’s degree in international studies from Université de Montréal and a bachelor’s in political science and German language from McGill University. She and her husband have two sons, Jonathan and Hendrick.

few Sundays ago, I was meandering around the foyer at the Longwood site before the 11 a.m. service started. I spotted some dear friends of mine—a couple I went with to Ukraine on a short-term trip last May. It had been a few months since we’d last seen one another, and we had a joyful reunion.

Not more than ten minutes later, in through the doors walked a teammate I had shared a room with on a short-term trip to Costa Rica in October. We also were ecstatic to reconnect.

Later I commented to one of my friends about what a gift it has been over the last year to form such deep, meaningful

friendships with various folks with whom I’ve served internationally. Within a week, complete strangers had become lifelong friends.

Based on my personal experience, I urge everyone to go on at least one international short-term trip. It would open your eyes to the world that God created, broaden your perspective on the global church, and enable you to build relationships in a very special way.

This would be a terrific year for you to consider going on a short-term trip with Northland. The list of trips Northland is offering is extensive, and there are so many good options! So get your passport, and get ready for a life-changing experience.

A weekday cooperative learning environment.

The Cooperative School at Northland is enrolling children who will reach the age of 2, 3 or 4 by September 1 into the weekday 2-, 3- or 4-year-old classes, respectively, for the 2016-17 school year. Nancy has been teaching faithfully in grade school since 2009. She is well loved by her students in the first-grade class she teaches and by all of her team members.

Nancy goes above and beyond when it comes to teaching the children God’s Word and even comes in early to bookmark the Bible pages for every student. She is a wonderful example of Christ’s love and faithfulness to His church, and we are proud to have her as part of the grade school team. Thank you, Nancy, for all that you do!

IS YOUR CHILD READY TO TAKE FIRST COMMUNION? Young Disciples Step 2 teaches children in grades two through five what it means to live as disciples of Christ. Children, alongside their parent or mentor, will explore the seven ways we respond to God for the benefit of others: by worshiping, reading the Bible, sharing our story, being in community, praying, serving, and living generously.

High School Ministry

ore than 200 high school students made the trek to Jasper, Georgia to attend Christmas Camp at SharpTop Cove.

Brian Katauskas, Families and Students Pastor at NorthlandOviedo, led the main sessions at night, taking the students through Romans 8:1-30, speaking on being aware of the Holy Spirit in his or her own life.

“This was my last year at Christmas Camp as a high schooler. I have never felt the Holy Spirit and Christ so much. [I learned that] the Holy Spirit is never completely extinguished and that God the Father will love us and never turn His back on us,” Senior Collin Hensley said.

Throughout the week, students experienced the beauty of God’s creation in the mountains. Days consisted of meals with their cabins, small group time, solo time, team games, class sessions, and skits.

Junior Courtney Stewart said, “Peace, power, and praise all sum up my Christmas Camp experience perfectly. It was a time where I could find myself through my brokenness, connect with God through the beautiful environment and be reminded of the Holy Spirit that thrives in me and His wonderful works.”

Students had the opportunity to spend New Years Eve worshipping together after taking communion with their cabins. Led by the worship band, students and leaders were encouraged to pray together as they entered 2017.

“As a first time Christmas Camper, I really think Christmas

Camp was life changing. From zip lining to phenomenal worship to mountain climbing to deep talks, I felt myself growing closer to the girls in my cabin and closer to God. I can’t think of any other way I’d want to spend my New Years from now on,” Junior Sydney Mycroft said.

Throughout the week, there were so many opportunities for students to deepen their relationships with peers and leaders.

“We are beyond thankful for all of the prayers and financial support from the Northland family for Christmas Camp 2016! For five days, our students disconnected from their normal routine, and got a chance to fully engage with each day. Everything from the games we played, to the skits, to the classes, the small groups, the free time, the solo time, the worship and sermons — all of it was covered in prayer and centered around growing closer to the Lord and each other. Many students even gave their lives to the Lord for the first time! We celebrate each step that was taken this week, and are so thankful for the work that He is doing. We know that the work doesn’t end here, and ask for your continued prayers for our high school students. Thank you, thank you from the student ministries staff,” High School Minister Kailey Simpson said.

The program is Mission To Japan’s primary way of sharing the gospel with Japanese people (only 1% of Japanese are Christian).

Mission To Japan takes care of the students during the day with English and Bible classes at Northland as well as sightseeing trips. Host families are needed to receive students in the evenings and provide meals, a room, and Christian friendship. Melinda: I’ll admit that the thought of coming to a conference talking about children and sexual abuse with a whole bunch of other people makes me uncomfortable.

Caleb: That is totally normal and understandable. It is a very vulnerable topic. Many parents are afraid to even talk about it. But the question is this: Do you want to pass that on to your kids, or do you want to come and work through that and change that sexual legacy for your kids? People have to make that decision. Even if you don’t talk about sex, there will still be a sexual legacy in your family. We want to help parents change the cultural sexual legacy to a godly sexual legacy so sex is what it is meant to be: a beautiful thing between a husband and a wife. Sexual abuse and harm can destroy the sexual intent God has for our entire lives.

Kelly: Being afraid usually indicates an opportunity for God to speak to that fear and then empower you to do something with it. If you’re afraid and uncomfortable, that probably means you should go forward to see what God has for you and what He will do with that fear. It is OK to be afraid. But have a healthy fear, not a paralyzing fear.

Melinda: You’ve mentioned sexual abuse and sexual harm. I’m not sure I know the difference.

Kelly: Sexual abuse is traditionally defined as inappropriate touching and beyond. Sexual harm is any way that your sexuality is affected that is against the intent of God. For example, most kids will see some form of pornography by the time they are 9 years old. That is sexual harm. Body shaming or being made fun of for how your body is shaped can cause harm if you don’t have a relationship established with a parent to get clarification. Viewing something sexual on television, in a movie or on the Internet, even if it isn’t considered pornography, can result in sexual harm.

Caleb: Curiosity and the desire to solve a mystery are totally normal. But you end up with kids who are pretending to be experts to one another about things such as masturbation or seeing a photo of a naked celebrity online. If those mysteries aren’t solved by a parent or someone they trust, kids will go and find the answers to the mysteries themselves.

Melinda: Who is invited to this conference? Should I bring my husband? Where do I sign up?

Can we start now? I’m totally feeling as if I’ve missed the boat already.

Caleb: You haven’t missed the boat, and it is never too late to start being proactive. You can sign up online at www.shieldinginnocence.com/events/ or calander.northlandchurch.net. There is a $50 fee that covers materials, snacks on Friday evening and a light breakfast Saturday morning.

Kelly: You should definitely bring your spouse. We provide a notebook with lots of information, but I can’t tell you how many moms come to me at the end and say how much they wish they had included their husbands. The conference is geared toward anyone in a nurturing role for children 13 and under, but if parents have older children, they are still welcome to attend.

Melinda: Is there anything I need to do to prepare in advance?

Caleb: You can begin to ask yourself how you approach sexuality in your own home. Kids are always paying attention to what you’re doing and saying. They know what kinds of things they can or can’t ask mom and dad. They know what feelings they can and can’t talk about. You could start with reflecting on that, even if you don’t feel you have the answers.

Kelly: Pray that God would give you courage to attend because traditionally it does feel like a topic that you would rather run away from. But if the church can start a revolution where we are the home of open conversation, where we are communicating and participating in connected parenting, and raising kids with great wisdom in this area, we could start a beautiful revolution. The church could be a safe haven from sexual abuse and harm, and others could look to us as an example. Perfect love casts out fear. Jesus will come with us if we are willing to go.

What We Believe THE BIBLE — We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16) GOD —

The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture.

THE MEANS OF SALVATION — We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary.

All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:6-7; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23) SECURITY, ASSURANCE AND RESPONSIBILITY — We believe that all the saved,

those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, Godpleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

MAN — We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race.

We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23) THE CHURCH — We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those

who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation.

THE CHRISTIAN’S WALK — We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. Pastor’s Bio During Dr. Hunter’s tenure, which began in 1985, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a Florida-based congregation of 20,000 that worships worldwide via the web. Before accepting the pastorate at Northland, he served as a United Methodist minister for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. Becky is the former president of the Global Pastors Wives Network and is the author of “Being Good to Your Husband On Purpose” (Creation House). The Hunters raised three sons and have seven grandchildren.

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
