About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

First Principles FAQs Recently, Pastor Joel started teaching us about the first principles of the faith, based on the Bible study series by BILD. More than half a million people are using this study, including many of Northland’s distributed churches. Chad Turnbull, our director of distributing the church, talks about the impact and importance of this great tool.

What are the first principles?

The writers of the Bible repeatedly used such phrases as “the deposit,” “the teaching” and “the tradition.” What those phrases are referring to are the basic principles we must learn and put into practice if we are to follow the Way, Jesus.

As they shift their understanding of who they are, they begin to see ministry opportunities everywhere. As they embrace those opportunities, they grow together and grow spiritually more than they ever have. We have story after story of this process.

Through the history of the church, we have developed tools to help Christians learn these essentials of the faith. The “First Principles” modern-day approach is designed around a different method of learning and applying those core principles.

Can you talk about Northland’s collaboration with BILD and the potential impact, locally and globally?

Our relationship with BILD has given us the ability to move people from disciple to discipler in the midst of their distributed church. We are now able to provide everyone with a basic discipleship tool that anyone can use in any context.

In addition to giving you intentional discipleship and training by studying the key principles of following Jesus, the “First Principles” series will serve as a guide to establishing your church and creating a shared understanding of what it means to be a distributed church.

Why are we encouraging Northlanders to use this study?

“Go start a distributed church” can be an intimidating thing to hear, but the First Principles study makes that process much more accessible. “First Principles” is a simple way to equip people for ministry and mission in the context of where they are right now. It’s proven, and it works!

People from all walks of life around the world are using First Principles to form their existing relationships into distributed churches … goat farmers in India, factory workers in China, and here in the United States, teachers, landscapers, lawyers, construction workers. In fact, around the world, only a small percentage of the church is led by professional clergy.

What’s the most unique thing about the First Principles series?

The series is often mistaken for a typical Bible study or devotional, but its primary purpose is to help a distributed church develop “a basic grasp of who they are as a believing community and how they fit into the plans and purposes of God.” That’s why it starts at square one. It uses a different methodology based on dialogue and developing theology in community, but it also is working toward a different result: helping people grasp what it means for a group of people to be a church and participate together in the mission of Jesus.

What kind of impact is the study having on distributed churches?

As soon as you start thinking about buying a red Toyota, you start seeing them everywhere. Before, you hardly ever saw them, but now they seem to be all over the place. As people have engaged this study in the context of their churches in formation, they are beginning to see themselves as distributed churches.

Also, we can help people get accredited master’s and doctoral degrees in church planting right here at Northland.

It also allows us a way to link with our partners and link together with other church-planting movements around the world.

How can people get involved?

First Principles is not a requirement for a distributed church. And there are many different methods of and tools for discipleship. The point isn’t that we complete a particular study; the point is that we form the church in the

relationships and context where God has placed us. But First Principles is a really good tool to help us accomplish that goal.

If you’re interested, talk to your close friends and/or family, and ask, “What if we formed a distributed church right here?” (Hint: A 9-Week Feast might be a good catalyst to start that conversation.) Then, walk through series 1 of First Principles together, and watch for the ways God shows up as you join His mission.

T

ime is of the essence if you are feeling called to serve on a Distributed Journey this year. Application deadlines are fast-approaching, as are deadlines for raising support. We have listed all the 2015 trips, including team leader contact information, the deadlines to apply for the trips and other useful information. You can find detailed trip descriptions, along with other pertinent facts about each trip, on our website, somedayistoday.net.

If you feel prompted by the Holy Spirit to serve on a short-term mission this year, I encourage you to act on it now. Peruse the trip listings and descriptions on our website to find the right fit for your interest and/or talents.

Many of the trips have no special requirements – just a willingness to be led by God to where He calls you. Contact the appropriate team leader with questions. Fill out an application for team membership, and start preparing your heart to serve globally. The experience will impact you in ways you never dreamed possible.

NEW THIS YEAR! Our Distributed Journey team leaders and team members will study and begin implementing the principles outlined in the book Helping Without Hurting in Short-Term Missions, by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert, who also wrote When Helping Hurts and conducted a one-day seminar on the topic at Northland last fall. In an effort to make the short-term interactions our teams have with the nationals they serve grow into lifelong engagement with missions and poverty alleviation, Northland’s Global Missions Team will provide training for our team leaders that they will share with their teams so that, as the book’s jacket reads, they can “move beyond good intentions, doing short-term missions without doing longterm harm.” If you are interested in this groundbreaking and acclaimed resource, you can find it in Northland’s bookstore.

SERVING TO EMPOWER Serve With the Prison and Jail Ministry A

t Northland, we believe that everyone deserves an opportunity to build a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Throughout Florida, thousands of men and women are working on their personal relationships with Christ in congregations behind bars. It’s our hope to fellowship with these brothers and sisters, pray with them in a time of need and welcome them into the Northland family through live webstream worship.

If you have ever wanted to join the Prison and Jail Ministry, we have many ways you can get involved.

Currently, we are serving male and female congregations at the Seminole County jail and four Department of Corrections Institutions: Tomoka, Polk, Lowell and Hernando.

At each of these facilities, we bring a regular scheduled service hosted by Northland volunteers. Currently, we

are seeking men and women interested in serving inside or outside the facilities. If you would like to get involved, you can join a devoted prayer team, write cards of encouragement or host live worship.

LifeHope Guests Learn of Choices

Faith Alliance Helps Human Trafficking Survivors

he LifeHope team has started to make changes to the journey of its ministry. It has begun inviting LifeHope guests to group orientations. Once they have completed the online application and the team has reviewed it, guests will be invited to learn about the process of LifeHope and the many choices available to the individual or family. These choices include workshops, counseling and one-on-one meetings with team members dedicated to helping guests work through and toward various life goals.

Local Serve Day’s Daddy-Daughter Cleanup

Meet the Team!

very week hundreds of people stop by The Hub. Some drop by to say hi and let us know it’s their first time here; others are responding to a ministry focus toward which they feel God calling them. Still others visit to learn how they might serve using their gifts and talents, and many stop by because they are in need of care or counseling. Whatever the reason for the visit, we have many hosts who are passionate about meeting the needs of every guest who walks into The Hub. Let’s meet some of the hosts now!

Eric: Eric’s first service at Northland was the day we broke ground on the new building. He’s been serving as a Hub host since October.

Eric was involved in the first phase of building our public safety team and is currently studying at Liberty University. Over the years, he also has been involved with our men’s ministry, and it’s his desire to serve his church well that brought him to the Hub host role.

Chris: Chris is one of our newest distributed elders and has attended Northland for 21 years. He is one of the original Hub hosts, signing up for the role the moment we opened!

Passionate about fostering connection and growing relationships, he has been involved in many ministries over the years, including the college ministry in its early days, the Northland Early Learning Center Co-op and Student Ministries in a support role. Chris was eager to host because he loves helping people make connections instead of just coming and going without any interaction and support.

Robyn: Robyn, the newest member of the team, is currently enrolled in Stephen Ministry training, which is sure to equip her further in helping our congregation! She’s a home school parent and is involved in several partner ministries in Central Florida. She joined the team based on her passion to help others and desire to learn more about Northland and all we have to offer to our congregation and the surrounding community.

Tom: Tom, a die-hard Michigan fan (go blue!), started in The Hub a couple of months ago.

He’s been attending Northland for more than 10 years and currently is a GriefShare facilitator, supports Marriage 911 and loves serving Communion each month. He’s been married for 33 years (way to go!) and enjoys family time watching and participating in sports with his four children and six grandchildren. He joined the Hub host team as a way to meet and help people while stretching himself personally.

Kimberlee: Here, Kimberlee shares her experience and why she felt called to be a Hub host: “From the first time I walked into The Hub, I’ve been fascinated by how such a simple concept could impact anyone who wants to become connected in our big church here at Northland.

The Hub was there for me about a year and a half ago when I wanted more information about a particular Bible study. That same weekend, two ladies in The Hub told me about the Tuesday night women’s Bible study. They were so friendly, welcoming and encouraging.

I just had to go to the Bible study, and I’ve been going ever since. I only wish others could experience the changes I’ve experienced by making that one connection because it has changed my life. We all need God, but we all need each other too, and I want to be the friendly, welcoming and encouraging face that helps you find that life-changing connection here in The Hub.” Bill: Bill’s Hub host role started after he walked a new believer to The Hub, encouraging that person to find some connection and support in the person’s new relationship with Christ. He has a natural gift for talking with people, and he was excited about helping this young man in his walk. He even recommended some great books for The Hub to hand out when newly saved congregants stopped by. He is a natural fit for The Hub and is enthusiastic about sharing the gospel and bringing folks into a relationship with Jesus. Bill has been on a Distributed Journey and involved with our Stephen Ministry.

Jennie: Jennie is another longtime Northlander and early adopter. She is an original member of our Hub host team and absolutely loves meeting people. She has been at Northland for 20 years and over that time has participated in many ministries, including Compass, women’s ministry and Classical Conversations, a home school group that meets regularly at Longwood. A child of New Tribes missionaries, Jennie grew up in the Amazon and has a heart for helping folks find their next step, whatever that may be. She appreciates that each week is a new experience, a new person and a new situation. She finds it a privilege to serve the congregation.

“I learn something every time I host because we are always highlighting new ministries or partner organizations,” she says.

What about you? Perhaps you feel God calling you to get more involved but are not sure where to begin. If there’s a place where you can connect with others and learn more about Northland and all we have to offer, it’s The Hub! Like so many of the other opportunities to serve, hosting not only helps you use your talents and gifts to help others, but you’ll see it also helps you grow along the way.

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have seven grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke, Lena, and Ava (2004-2010).

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
