Lent is a 40-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends the day before Easter. Sundays are not counted in the 40 days, as Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. It is a period that the church sets aside to focus on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice.

This Lenten season, join with your friends, family or community group to read through the Gospel of John together!

If you could open the door to anyplace, where would it lead, and who would be there?

Scripture Focus:

DISCUSSION QuestionS:

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. …

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”

Worship Focus:

Read John 9:1-12.

Notice the way people interact with the blind man and with Jesus. What did the disciples’ reaction reveal about how they view God and about how they view man?

The blind man testifies about God’s work in his life. Describe a time when you saw God work in your life.

Worship Christ today as the Door to life. He is the Door, and He is the One who brings us through to the other side.

Read John 9:13-34.

Describe the reaction of the Pharisees. Why did they show so much disbelief?

Think About It

Similarly, how do YOUR fears limit you from experiencing God?

Are you willing to bet your life on the view of God that you have?

RESPOND TO GOD by Pastor Vernon Rainwater PaRt 5: REaD tHE BIBLE

W

hy should we read the Bible? There are lots of ways I could approach a topic like this. I could talk about why we gravitate toward a certain translation of the Bible. I could explain why we believe the Bible is historically accurate and inerrant in the original text. I think I can make a fairly convincing case for why we can trust the Bible to be historically accurate, authoritative … that it’s true in our lives and for our lives.

In the end, we will either decide that the Bible is the authority in our lives, and therefore the Bible and what it contains is smarter than we are, or we will decide that we are the authority in our lives, and we know better than what the Bible says. All of us make that decision, in one way or another, every single day of our lives with Scripture.

So how do we decide that we should read the Bible? We should read the Bible because it is a training manual, and our lives depend upon it.

I make a statement that strong because the Bible, as we have it, is so important in our lives. Here’s what it says in Psalm 19:7-10: “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold” (ESV).

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul writes these words: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man [or woman] of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (ESV).

So Paul and David are saying this book is where truth comes from. Now, it would be one thing for David to say that. It’s one thing for Paul to say that. It’s quite a different and less significant thing for me to say that. But do you know who else believed that this is the word of God? Jesus Himself believed that.

He believed it with every fiber of His being.

Jesus read the Bible. When Jesus announced His ministry, He announced it by reading from the Holy Scriptures to all who were listening. So in order to be a follower of Him, you can go to the same source He went to, and that’s Scripture itself.

I once asked a successful businessman who supervises employees, “If you had created a training manual for your staff, and it was absolutely imperative for

them to read that training manual, how would you persuade them to read it?”

He thought for a minute and said, “I would read it along with them. I’d read it to them if I had to.” I love that! Think about that. It changes everything when the boss comes and reads with you what you need to know.

Do you realize that’s exactly what God has done with His Word? He reads with you. When you read Scripture, He is reading along with you. How do I know that? It says in 1 Corinthians 2:13: “And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual” (ESV). In other words, God Himself makes His Word clear to us as we read it.

If you’re wondering, How come I read the Bible, but I never understand it? it’s because you’re forgetting the fact that Jesus is right there beside you, reading along with you.

There are times when I’m reading the Bible, and I don’t understand it. I just turn to Him and say, “This doesn’t make any sense. What were you thinking when you wrote this down?” Sometimes He tells me, and sometimes He just says, “Just keep reading.”

And sometimes He doesn’t answer at all, which means I should have gotten it and didn’t need to ask Him. You figure out for yourself how you want to communicate with Him about it, but He’s reading along with you as you are reading His Word.

Ultimately, we should read the Bible because of whose story this is. Moses is not the story of Moses; it’s the story of Jesus, a perfect Moses who would deliver His people from bondage.

David is not the story of David; it’s the story of Jesus, who would be the perfect King, who would never sin and would rule in splendor and glory. It’s not the story of Noah, who would gather people on a boat; it’s a story of Jesus, who would gather us into His church and take us on a journey that one day will result in our reaching our eternal and promised land.

This is not your story. If you’re reading every story of the Bible, looking for yourself in the Bible, you will be disappointed.

You’re looking through the wrong end of the telescope when you do that. If you read the Bible, realizing from the beginning to the end that it’s the story of the glory and the suffering of Christ, it will change everything … and it can help you change the world.

It starts with your deciding whether you will let the Word of God speak in your life. Team Shares Jesus With Orphans in Ukraine

A

team of 13 people traveled to Ukraine January 2 to 11 to facilitate an orphan camp with our partner Hope for Orphans (HFO). The team members went straight from the airport to an orphanage in Gordinya, which is three hours outside of Kiev. Connecting with the HFO Ukrainian team, they lived at the orphanage, facilitating a program full of games, sports, Bible lessons, crafts, master classes, and an evening program of skits, worship and a message. January 7 is Christmas Day in Ukraine, so the team brought Christmas to them and the Good News that a Savior had been born for them.

I went to Ukraine with Philemon 1:6 in mind: “And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ” (NLT). Our God is generous. I wanted the kids in Ukraine to see that, to understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. This was my daily prayer and motivation.

On the plane, I read this excerpt from My Utmost for His Highest, by Oswald Chambers: He went out, not knowing where he was going.

—Hebrews 11:8 Have you ever “gone out” in this way? If so, there is no logical answer possible when anyone asks you what you are doing. One of the most difficult questions to answer in Christian work is, “What do you expect to do?” You don’t know what you are going to do. The only thing you know is that God knows what He is doing.

Continually examine your attitude toward God to see if you are willing to “go out” in every area of your life, trusting in God entirely. … Have you been asking God what He is going to do? He will never tell you. God does not tell you what He is

going to do—He reveals to you who He is. Do you believe in a miracle-working God, and will you “go out” in complete surrender to Him until you are not surprised one iota by anything He does?

I knew this message was timely, and I needed to pay attention, but I still didn’t realize just how much I would need to remember these words later in the trip!

The orphanage at Gordinya had better facilities than the orphanages I went to last summer. The buildings were large and clean, the teachers were friendly to the children and to us, and the kids were decently clothed. However, these kids were emotionally and spiritually starving. Punching, biting and slapping were routine in their interactions with one another, so from the first day, we focused on being gentle and kind, showing the kids a better way to communicate and interact.

We had small group Bible lessons in the mornings, and my group of 11 consisted of 10- to 12-year-old boys and girls. It’s amazing how quickly we fell in love with them! One of our girls, named Nastia, had a birthday during camp. We bought her a cake and sang “Happy Birthday” to Nastia. her in English. We were warned about her on the first day because she was especially violent. Even when she wasn’t angry, she was rough and didn’t know her own strength. The day after her birthday, however, she sat next to me during the lesson, so I put my arm around her. Instead of wrestling with me, as I expected, she simply hung on to me softly and sat still. While talking to my Ukrainian team member that afternoon, I found out Nastia asked her about Jesus and if He could love her. After talking for a while, Nastia gave her heart to Jesus!

I gave my testimony during the evening concert. Because I grew up in a Christian home, I worried the orphans wouldn’t relate to my story. I ended up being as honest as I could, sharing Hebrews 6:13-20 with them. I described my life as a boat at sea. Without an anchor, my boat was at the mercy of every storm, but with Christ as the anchor of my soul, it doesn’t matter whether the sea is calm or rough. Jesus, not my circumstances, is the Center of my hope and the Source of my joy. My prayer is that the orphans will realize only God satisfies, and though their circumstances may never improve, they can have imperishable hope, joy and purpose in our glorious Lord.

On Christmas Eve, the American and Ukrainian teams went caroling through the village. We sang in Russian and English, going from house to house. Some families came out to hear us sing and give us candy. It was a precious time. On Christmas Day, we gave all the orphans hats and scarves (we had more than enough!) as well as candy and presents. They were so excited that people they didn’t even know who lived so far away, in a different country, cared so much about them!

Thank you, all of you who prayed for us. I am continually amazed at how God is using our partnerships in Ukraine for the expanse of His Kingdom. It is humbling to serve in the name of Christ in such an amazing way.

Northland, other worship sites join Habitat in Altamonte.

abitat for Humanity of Seminole-Apopka, along with Northland and several other houses of worship, will begin construction of a home in the Altamonte Springs community through an interfaith build initiative, appropriately named Harmony House.

The house will bring together Christians, Muslims and Jews for the purpose of building a simple, decent, affordable home in partnership with a family in need. We are so excited and privileged to have been a part of the planning process over the past several months and now are thrilled to announce that we are in the process of building this home for a local family.

The home will be built using both professional and unskilled volunteer labor, and we hope to finish the home in late May. However, in order to make that happen, we need volunteers just like you, skilled and unskilled! Here are the opportunities where you can get involved this month. Please note that on every workday, there are opportunities for you to serve regardless of your skill level; no experience is required. For each day listed here, we need 12 volunteers:

Workdays are scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All tools are provided, and a skilled, licensed site manager will be on location for all workdays. Again, those with a background in construction are always needed, but no prior skills are required to be a part of this opportunity.

This is a great opportunity for you to get involved in a life-changing project! About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God — The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation — We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.

What is a “church distributed”?

Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions.

Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.”

“There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.

Easter lilies have long been recognized as a symbol of hope and life. If you would like to honor or memorialize a loved one, you may purchase a lily for placement in the church during this holy season. A list of those honored and memorialized will appear in the April edition of Respond.
