Scripture Focus: LUKE 19:33-40 (NASB) As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They said, “The Lord has need of it.” They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: “BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”

Worship Focus:

Worship Christ today as the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). As we follow Him, we can share the stories of His goodness for the benefit of those around us. Our prayer is that they, too, will come to know the Truth and follow.

Icebreaker Question: Think of your childhood best friend. How was your friendship with that person similar or different from your friendships today?

DISCUSSION QuestionS: Read John 15:1-11. How does the analogy of Jesus as the vine and we, His people, the branches, help us understand our need for Christ? What are ways that we benefit from this connection to Jesus as the vine? How do you pursue staying connected to Christ? What are ways that the enemy attempts to make you feel disconnected from Jesus? Read John 15:12-17. Considering the connection and love we have received from Christ, how do these verses describe what action we should then take? According to these verses, what initiative does God take toward us? How does John 15 provide you with practical encouragement that you can share with others about the good news of the gospel? Read John 15:18-27. Why would the world hate Christians, hate Jesus, and/or look negatively upon the claims of Christ? What promise does Jesus give in verses 2627? Why Go to Church? BY PASTOR VERNON RAINWATER

ave you ever wondered why so many people are drawn to church on Easter and Christmas? Is it just a cultural phenomenon? First, I should probably clarify the term “church.” One does not (technically) “go” to church. According to the Bible, the word “church” comes from the Greek ekklesia, which means “gathering” or “assembly.” Therefore, the church is the gathering of the followers of Jesus who come together to participate in fellowship with one another as they worship God and hear from His Word, the Bible. But most of us use the expression “go to church” to mean going to the place where the people of God gather. So why do we go? Perhaps it is because the story of God is such a great story — the story of a God who came in the form of a child, a God who lived life on this earth, a God who literally sacrificed His life to pay the price for our sin. It is the story of a God even death could not contain. Wouldn’t you want to know more about a God like this? With stories this great, wouldn’t you like to see how it works in your life? Because it’s a story that includes you, whether or not you acknowledge it. That’s what we do every week at Northland. We look at the stories of God and worship Him for who He says He is and for what He has done. Try thinking about it this way: If you went to someone’s wedding and funeral, would you say that you had a relationship with that person? Obviously not, once the person is gone! Suppose you went to someone’s baptism and wedding. Would you say you have a relationship with that person? The answer would have to be no because that person would have lived a lot of life in between those events. This is a great comparison to our relationship with Christ. While it is good to celebrate with the rest of the world Jesus’ birth and Resurrection, have you ever been curious about what Jesus did in between His birth and Resurrection? He did a lot! In fact, as great as the story of His birth is, and as hopeful as the story of His death and Resurrection is, really the stuff we need for everyday life is found in between those two events in His life on earth. In fact, those two days are called holy days, or holidays, because we learn what it means not only to know about Jesus, but also to know Jesus. If I had a friend who didn’t go to church at all, the first thing I would suggest is that the person go on Easter or Christmas. I would start with just getting him to church. But if I have a friend who attends every Christmas and Easter, and I want to encourage him in his faith, I would affirm him for coming and challenge him to step it up. It’s a really big deal for someone to come and acknowledge those holy days. But if Jesus is a big enough deal that the whole world celebrates His birth and His Resurrection, then He’s got to be a big enough deal for us to check out what He taught, how He lived, how He formed relationships, and what that means for us in our lives. So one reason to attend more often is to learn more about Jesus.

Another important reason to find a church is to be a part of a community of people who believe in these same important things, a community of people who know and pursue Christ. If I really love the game of basketball, and can even play the game, but all I ever do is watch the games on TV during championships, then it’s a really different thing for me to go out to a basketball court and engage in a game. If I really love basketball, going and engaging in a game with other people who really love basketball is far more enjoyable than watching it on TV. So part of the invitation to church is to stop being just a spectator and really get into the game. There’s a whole lot we can get every time we come together as a community. We can spend a lifetime trying to understand who God is. But we see more of who He is as we interact with other believers. It’s something that we have to think about and look for every day of our lives. A whole lot of other people are on the same journey you are. Don’t miss the opportunity to travel with them and share life. If you really think you are going to come and go, and nobody is going to notice, we need your help with that. But God has always led His people as a group, from the beginning of our understanding until the present day. And it’s not all about what the church can do for you, but how you can respond to God for the benefit of others. Do you have to come to church to be a Christian? Of course not. But being a part of the church really matters. The Bible says the only thing that’s going to remain for eternity is the church itself — not the building, but the people who are the church, the body of Christ throughout all generations. So being a part of that is an assurance on which God places a whole lot of emphasis. We know from the Bible that heaven will be a gathering of the bride of Christ. So if it’s what we are to be a part of there, Jesus makes it clear that we are to be a part of it here on earth, too. The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. The ultimate reason we go to church is to worship and enjoy Him now. It’s also what we will do in heaven, but it will be different from what most people think. We will know one another. We’re going to eat, play, work — it’s not about sitting on clouds, playing harps. It will be a new earth. In the meantime, we are called to participate in the body of believers — to worship God for who He is and what He has done, and to respond to Him for the benefit of others. Recently, in a blog post focused on the coming Easter celebration, Diana reﬂected on how she is “a life resurrected.” It is this very truth, new life in the resurrected Jesus, that she is sharing with oppressed women in Bosnia and Eastern Europe, as well as all whom the Spirit leads across her path. As you read her thoughts below, pray for those God is speaking to through the witness of your own “life resurrected.”

week or so ago, as I was puttering around at home one evening and reflecting on how much my life has changed and how very good it is, the thought that I am “a life resurrected” materialized in my mind and resonated in my heart. You have to know my story — where I have been, what I have come through in the last several years and where I am now — to truly get that. But suffice it to say that I was born, then born again, and then I died an agonizing death to myself and to things from the past and am now truly living “a life resurrected.” It occurs to me, even as I sit here and type, that I am much like Lazarus and that my story is similar to his in John 11. You see, I was dead; some things from the past had killed my heart, ravaged my soul, snuffed out my spirit and buried me lifelessly in a dark tomb. And like He did in Lazarus’ case, Jesus took a while to come and to heal and to call me back to life again. For me, he delayed coming for more like 40 years instead of just four days. I don’t know why, but I have learned that His timing is always perfect and that He has a vision and perspective far larger and broader than mine. Like Lazarus, I had brothers and sisters who sent word to Jesus that I was sick, who waited patiently and expectantly for Him to come, who were grieved over His delay but grateful when He came, and who believed unswervingly in His love and power. Like with Lazarus, Jesus wept over my wounds and the death they had

brought to my heart, soul and spirit. And like with Lazarus, He commanded others around me to “remove the stone,” and He called me out of the dark tomb that had held me captive and again commanded others “to unbind and let me go.” Like with Lazarus, Jesus did it all, but He called others to play a role in my freedom and healing. You see, it was a joint effort … among Him, me and them. That’s how “a life resurrected” happens. It’s not a solo act. And I dare to say, like in Lazarus’ story, that others have believed and been strengthened by their role in and through what they witnessed of my resurrection to life again. You see, that is how it works: We pray, we cry, we wait, we listen, we obey, we participate, we see, we believe, we rejoice, and we are strengthened and encouraged. “A life resurrected” is a marvelous and miraculous thing initiated by our Savior, and it involves and touches us all. It’s not a solo act. So I am living “a life resurrected,” and I am grateful for the One who came at the perfect time and orchestrated it all, and for those who shared in the ministry of my resurrection. And now I walk in the great adventure and the irrepressible joy of being a “cast member” in the story of others and their call to “a life resurrected” as well. t Northland, service is not just something we do; it’s an essential part of who we are. Serving in the local community is a very tangible way of demonstrating God’s love for those around us. Are you looking for opportunities to serve others, but aren’t sure where or how to get started? We know that figuring out where, how and when to serve can be challenging. That’s why we have come up with a few easy ways to get involved. Here are four different ways you can get started serving others!

1. Sign up for local Serve Day. Local Serve Day is a quarterly event during which you can serve with your friends and family. Projects are available for all ages and skill levels! A group leader and all the materials needed to do the job are provided for you. All you have to do is sign up online at serve.northlandchurch.net and show up that morning from 8 a.m. until noon. It’s just that easy!

2. Sign up for one of our regular monthly service opportunities. Northland has various

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

Man

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven. Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Award Offered

We have programs and services for individuals with disabilities. The Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Northland’s True North Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2012 award. Completed application packets must be received by Friday, May 25 for consideration. Recipients will be notified by Friday, June 22. The Respond newspaper will provide bios of this year’s scholarship recipients in an upcoming issue.
