When the Lord had clothed Himself with humanity, and had suffered for the sake of the sufferer,

and had been bound for the sake of the imprisoned, and had been judged for the sake of the condemned, and had been buried for the sake of the one who had been buried, He rose up from the dead,

John 20:1-18 (NASB)

and cried with a loud voice,

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their own homes.

But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher).

Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

SUMMARY: A biblically based program designed to help anyone struggling with hurts, hang-ups or habits (northlandchurch.net/celebraterecovery).

WHEN & WHERE: Fridays at 7 p.m., Longwood Sanctuary (optional family-style dinner at 5:45 p.m., $3 charge).

RECOVERY AREAS: Chemical addiction; codependency; anger; men’s sexual addiction; women’s eating disorders; women’s emotional, physical and sexual abuse; women’s love and relationship addiction; codependency for moms of prodigals.

SUMMARY: A Christ-centered 12-step program designed to lead those who are hurting away from their false perceptions and into “His Way.” Started in 1989 by Frank and P.J. Turner, His Way is one of Northland’s longest-running ministries.

WHEN & WHERE: Thursdays at 7 p.m., The Rink, Fellowship Hall.

RECOVERY AREAS: Drug and alcohol addiction; relationship addiction or codependency; sexual addiction; Al-Anon (friends and families of addicts).

SUMMARY: A 12-step fellowship of recovering couples who suffer from many different addictions (recovering-couples. org).

WHEN & WHERE: Mondays starting April 7 at 7:45 p.m., The Rink, room 1118.

RECOVERY AREAS: All addictions for couples.

“Celebrate Recovery is for both individuals and the entire family, because one person’s addictions and compulsive behaviors will affect the entire family,” says Mary Ann Mannen, a ministry leader and licensed mental health counselor.

“Our small groups really allow people to share what’s on their hearts. No time constraints. No workbooks. Just honest people helping one another walk through their pain and suffering in a loving and non-accusatory manner,” explains A. Jay Fowinkle, who recently was appointed by Frank and P.J. to lead His Way.

“While adults are grappling with a topic at Celebrate Recovery, kids are learning about the same issue at Celebration Place, but on a level and in language they understand. We also just launched The Landing for teens, grades 6 to 12, designed to help young people break patterns of unhealthy behavior. This is really a place for all to begin healing!”

COSA SUMMARY: A 12-step group offering hope to men and women whose lives have been affected by another person’s sexual behavior (cosa-recovery.org).

LIFE (Living in Freedom Everyday) SUMMARY: For women facing love, sex, romance and relationship addiction.

RECOVERY AREAS: Sex, love and relationship addiction recovery and codependency issues.

“As we begin to share our experiences, strength and hope while working the 12 steps, we grow stronger in spirit,” says Dixie, who serves alongside her husband, David, in several recovery groups at Northland — including Sex Addicts Anonymous and Recovering Couples Anonymous.

According to Suzanne Rucker, a licensed mental health counselor who leads the LIFE group at Northland, “If you are always looking for the next relationship before you are out of the one you are in … or you feel the needs of your partner are greater than yours and that you can’t make it in life without him, then this group is for you.

“We begin to lead our lives more serenely and in deeper fulfillment … little by little, one day at a time. Only in this way can we be of help to others.”

“We focus on freedom from shame, and talk about the root causes of relationship addiction and walk together toward healing. All women are welcome!”

Faithful & True

Praxis

SUMMARY: The mission of Faithful & True is to support men whose desire it is to honor God with their sexual integrity.

WHEN & WHERE: Mondays at 7:30 p.m., The Rink, Fellowship Hall.

RECOVERY AREAS: Men’s sexual addiction.

SUMMARY: Started in 1993, Praxis teaches sensitive people, those dealing with fear, anger or anxiety, to handle difficulties using principles from God’s Word.

WHEN & WHERE: Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m., Northland at Longwood, Children’s Worship Wing, room 5106.

RECOVERY AREAS: Fear, anger and anxiety.

“We share our experience, strength and hope with each other that we may solve our common problems and help other recovering couples restore their relationships,” says Dixie, who is leading this ministry along with her husband, David — who also heads up the Sex Addicts Anonymous men’s group on Monday nights.

“We all come from different levels of brokenness. Many of us have been separated or near divorce. We have all sought healing in Recovering Couples Anonymous, which provides a foundation on which you can heal and grow as a couple.”

Sex Addicts Anonymous (Men) SUMMARY: A spiritual program based on the principles and traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous (saa-recovery.org).

RECOVERY AREAS: Addictive sexual behavior.

“When we start attending meetings of Sex Addicts Anonymous, many of us are surprised to meet people who are enjoying life and experiencing freedom from painful, compulsive behaviors,” explains David, who will lead this new group.

“We live in the faith that God’s care is enough for us and that we don’t need to be dishonest to survive.”

“To combat sexual addiction, we learn how to have authentic relationships with God and godly men who recognize their need for a Savior,” explains Dr. Bryce Hagedorn, program director of counselor education at the University of Central Florida, who also serves in a variety of ministries at Northland.

“Many men stay in the ministry, even after they have found victory, because they discover that the answer to their struggle is relationships. Those who attend Faithful & True say that they wished that they would have found the group a long time ago.”

“Praxis is a group that teaches you quickly to use God’s principles for mental health and a sound mind,” says Skye Engel, the group’s leader. “We’re not a 12-step program, but rather a reassuring place where you can talk about what God is doing in your life and be blessed by what He’s doing in the lives of others.

Women’s Healing Ministry SUMMARY: For women who have been sexually betrayed — as a child, in dating relationships, or in a past or current marriage.

WHEN & WHERE: Wednesdays at 7 p.m., Northland at Longwood, room 4218.

RECOVERY AREAS: Sexual addiction, love addiction, infidelity, pornography or any other type of dysfunctional sexual behavior.

“There is nothing sadder than a woman suffering in silence, struggling alone and secretly wishing and praying it would just go away,” explains therapist and group facilitator Vicki Wotring. “These issues do not just magically go away, and you can be assured of a confidential, hopeful and supportive group of bruised, trustworthy, loving and compassionate women walking alongside every woman who comes into this group.

“I tell people every week, ‘If you come faithfully for two months, you will see a big difference in your life and in your mental health.’ There are men and women of all ages who come.”

“Women in this group pray together, dine together, support each other and live out their pain together. I would not miss this group for anything because of the depth of hope, healing and health we’re seeing restored and redeemed by Jesus.”

Share God’s Love in Haiti

orthland is partnering with New Missions from July 15 through 19 to bring a team into Haiti. Since 1983, New Missions has served in Haiti, developing Christian leaders by “changing the life of a child.”

Currently, more than 10,000 students attend their 26 elementary schools and a high school in Haiti. New Missions is a full-service Christian mission. The focus is on making disciples, preaching the gospel, and meeting the spiritual, physical and intellectual needs of the poorest of the poor.

In each of New Missions’ locations, the people start by establishing a church and school. Each child in a New Missions school is given a hot meal daily, as well as ongoing medical care. New Missions has a fully staffed medical clinic in Haiti and continues to train health workers to serve the local villages. New Missions’ 26 churches are staffed with Haitian pastors who have been trained at its Bible college in Haiti.

In Haiti, the team will work alongside New Missions at one of its 26 schools and churches. There the team members will be guided by a local pastor, who will show them how to effectively minister in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

This is the first time a team is joining New Missions in Haiti for mission work other than rebuilding after the devastating earthquakes there. Opportunities to serve Haiti that week may include a half-day VBS-type program at each

of the villages in the area, women’s and men’s devotionals, the sharing of donations, painting and more. Bring a flexible heart, and be ready to experience what God already has planned!

This team will be housed in bunkhouses of two to four people, and will share devotions and all meals together where it will be staying. Each morning, a New Missions pastor will lead in devotions, and after each meal, the team will assist in cleaning up. Each morning and afternoon, it will go out to a local village. It also will get to experience worship in community with some villages. In the evening, the team will gather to reflect and pray.

Because of the nature of the current conditions in Haiti, only children 10 years and older may join the team. They must be with a parent if they are 10 to 12. Children 13 to 17 years old may join the team with a parental consent form, and all adults are welcome. There are no required immunizations, but a current tetanus vaccination is strongly recommended. A passport with at least six months left till renewal is required.

Step outside of your comfort zone to experience what God is doing there and what He can do in you. You will come back changed! Positive change in the world comes from a cross-cultural understanding that we are created in God’s image and are all loved by Him. Serving can be who you are, not just what you do. Workshops include Care for the Caregiver, Fall Prevention/ Home Safety, Meals for One, Staying Fit, Living on a Fixed Income, Introduction to Massage, Grief Measures, and Seniors and Crime.

Special workshop: Senior Survival Seminar (9 a.m. to noon) – Presented by Kathleen Flammia, elder law attorney, who will discuss Medicaid, estate planning and veteran benefits.

Health screenings (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) – Those offered: blood pressure, medication interaction (noon to 2 p.m.), vision (9 a.m. to noon), blood sugar, and a screening for a free telephone through Florida Telecommunication Relay, as well as cholesterol information.

y now you’ve probably heard about the Northland Easter parties happening all over Central Florida this month. Nathan and his family told us about their Christmas party and how much they enjoyed spending time with old friends, meeting Northlanders who live in the same neighborhood, and watching the kids running around, having a great time with one another. If you haven’t seen Nathan’s video or don’t know how our Easter party idea came to fruition, let’s catch you up.

Near the end of last year, we thought it would be a good idea to help our congregation members find connection points in their own neighborhoods. With Christmas around the corner, why not help families in our congregation plan Christmas parties, invite Northlanders to attend, and pray these parties lead to new relationships? Throughout December, 69 families that are passionate about connection and relationship-building opened their homes to celebrate the season and, along the way, realized there were Northlanders right around the corner.

We received so many great stories from our hosts and guests about meeting new friends, reconnecting with old friends, and plans their families have to continue meeting and spending time together. Another outcome from these parties is several first principle groups were formed and are

meeting regularly to learn what the Bible teaches us about discipleship. We loved hearing these stories!

So what does this mean for you and our upcoming Easter parties? Beginning April 1, Northland families are opening their homes again to welcome our congregation to join them to celebrate Easter. This time around, we are doing things a little bit differently. Instead of sending out invitations, we’re inviting you to visit us in The Hub after worship or during the week to use our interactive map, where you can find the party nearest you. If you don’t have time to drop by The Hub, visit the site Nathan and his team have been working on at northlandchurch.net/neighbors.

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have six grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke and Ava (2004-2010).
