These groups offer a series of programs designed to address those aspects of your life that are most impacted by ending your marriage relationship — your physical self, mental self, emotional self and spiritual self.

Registration and orientation are required before attending these 15-week sessions.

DISASTER RESPONSE WEEKEND

FREE! Build a family emergency kit.

Meteorologist Amy Sweezey from WESHChannel 2 will join us to provide some valuable weather information. There will be demonstrations, giveaways and FUN projects for the entire family. This is the kickoff to Disaster Response Weekend at Longwood.

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles – if indeed you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace which was given to me for you; that by revelation there was made known to me the mystery, as I wrote before in brief. By referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit; to be specific, that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel, of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of God’s grace which was given to me according to the working of His power. To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things; so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places. Christ has risen.

I

t has always struck me as remarkable that when the writers of the four Gospels come to the most important part of the story they have to tell, they tell it in whispers. The part I mean, of course, is the part about the resurrection. The Jesus who was dead is not dead anymore. He has risen. He is here. According to the Gospels there was no choir of angels to proclaim it. There was no sudden explosion of light in the sky. Not a single soul was around to see it happen. When Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb afterward, she thought at first that it must be a gardener standing there in the shadows, and when she saw who it really was and tried to embrace him, he told her not to, as if for fear that once she had him in her arms she would never let him go, the way I suspect that if you and I were ever to have him in our arms, we would never let him go either. When the disciples heard he was alive again, they tended to dismiss it as too good to be true, and even when they finally saw him for themselves, Thomas still wasn’t convinced until Jesus let him touch his wounds with his own hands. Later on, when they were out fishing at daybreak, they saw him standing on the beach, and there again they failed to recognize him until he asked them to come join him at the charcoal fire he had started on the sand and cooked them breakfast.

The way the Gospel writers tell it, in other words, Jesus came back from death not in a blaze of glory, but more like a candle flame in the dark, flickering first in this place, then in that place, then in no place at all. If they had been making the whole thing up for the purpose of converting the world, presumably they would have described it more the way the book of Revelation describes how he will come back again at the end of time with “the armies of heaven arrayed in fine linen, white and pure” and his eyes “like a flame of fire, and on his head many diadems” (19:14, 12). But that is not the way the Gospels tell it. They are not trying to describe it as convincingly as they can. They are trying to describe it as truthfully as they can.

It was the most extraordinary thing they believed had ever happened, and yet they tell it so quietly that you have to lean close to be sure what they are telling. They tell it as softly as a secret, as something so precious, and holy, and fragile, and unbelievable, and true, that to tell it any other way would be somehow to dishonor it. To proclaim the resurrection the way they do, you would have to say it in whispers: “Christ has risen.” Like that.

SERVE GLOBALLY Reaching Those Who Don’t Know Jesus

wenty years ago this summer, I was part of a team of people participating in language and culture studies as part of a special program at several different universities in western China. We also spent time sharing with the students about our own culture and helping those who were studying English. One morning in particular was used by God to help direct me into the ministry focus that still guides me today.

I was brought into a class with about 40 master’slevel students who were preparing to teach English at the middle school level. They spent the class practicing their conversational English by asking me questions. The questions were pretty standard, about my family, where I lived and what I did for a living. This last one was especially interesting to them because at that time, I was working as a teacher in Maryland. Excited that we had something in common, they then asked what subject I taught. I was teaching Bible in a Christian high school, so I simply said, “I teach Bible.” After a moment of silence, one student raised his hand and asked, “What is that?”

I expected that there might be some in that room who did not know what a Bible is, but to have a whole classroom full of graduate-level students not have a clue that the Bible is a book was startling to me, even more so when I mentioned Jesus, and they said they had never heard of Him! I know people who do not believe in Jesus, but to have never even heard of him … wow!

God worked on my heart in a couple of ways as a result of that summer and that experience in particular. It was the first time I felt how far from the gospel, the truth about our need for the salvation work of Jesus, many people lived.

The familiar passages in the Bible that talk about us, the disciples/followers of Jesus, going into all the world to make disciples took on a new significance. Romans 10:11-15 was especially challenging. Salvation is available to everyone; anyone can believe in Jesus and receive His free gift of life.

But how are they to believe in Jesus if they have never heard of Him? How can they hear if no one is sent to tell them?

This has become my focus in serving in missions. I serve with a mission agency that partners with churches to see church-planting movements initiated among peoples who need someone to be sent to them, so they can hear about

Jesus and the gospel. Currently, I am a pre-field coach on the training team at Pioneers. My ministry is to assist those whom God is calling to go and share the Good News of the gospel where it is not currently known. Specifically, I help those who are being sent from churches in the United States to certain parts of Asia. It is a huge transition to move from life in the United States to life overseas. I help with that.

I help get these folks connected with future ministry teams and locations overseas and then walk with them through their time of support raising – building a team of partners who will financially support them, as well as going through any cross-cultural training programs or ministry development they might need to complete. It is a ministry of encouragement, prayer and shepherding. Our spiritual enemy does not want to see people following Jesus … wherever they live and whatever their particular calling in ministry.

Right now I am blessed to be working with 51 individuals. Many of them will depart for their ministry overseas this year. On average, it takes someone around 15 to 18 months from the time they join with Pioneers until they depart. God continues to raise up new workers, so even as I send someone overseas, new relationships are beginning.

God still impresses me with the tremendous need that exists in our world for His disciples to be sent to these places where the name of Jesus is not known. Praise God

that He is calling forth disciples to go, and not just from the United States. One of the blessings of being part of an international organization is seeing how followers of Jesus from all over the world are being sent out to make disciples of all nations.

I recently spent some time in Thailand, attending a retreat for one of our Asia regions. Every two years, they gather together for encouragement and spiritual nourishment. This year almost 300 adults from about a dozen different countries attended. The reports of what God is doing in building up His church were encouraging.

The request for more workers was ever present and for me a reminder of my own experiences, what God has allowed me to see of the “lostness” of so many people in this world.

It drives me to pray, as the Lord told us to in Luke 10:2, for more workers for His harvest fields. Would you join me in praying for that as well? Pray that God would continue to raise up His disciples from all over the world to send them to these places where people currently live without a means of hearing the saving message of Jesus.

I also would encourage you to pray specifically for those workers Northland has been privileged to send out.

There are others like myself, whose ministry is more directly focused on assisting and ministering to those who are being sent or have been sent. Pray for us to have wisdom and discernment and hearts of service and encouragement in all our interaction with those serving overseas. Pray for those missionary partners that Northland supports who are directly ministering in these spiritually dry places. Pray for them to be drawn closer and closer to the Lord, that they might witness God’s love to those they live among with words and deeds. Pray that they would have wisdom and boldness in sharing the gospel. Pray that they would have perseverance and humility as they live in a different culture and language.

By doing this, we are an active part of Northland’s sending and support of these workers.

We will have tables set up for building a kit, making a plan, finding a shelter and learning to prepare for pets’ safety. Anyone who needs assistance during evacuations and sheltering because of

Belong Seminar Wherever you find yourself on the spectrum—from just curious about Northland, to desiring membership, to actively distributing the church in your setting—the Belong Seminar is a great place to learn about the role Northland has in bringing “up there down here.”

Pastor Joel and other church leaders will be there to meet you and answer any questions you might have. There’ll also be an opportunity at the end of the seminar to become a member of Northland, if that is what you desire. So if you or someone you know is curious about Northland and wondering what it means to belong, then we hope you’ll join us. Child care is available too!

ACCESS MINISTRIES

Created in His Image: Celebrating Diversity in the Church Access Ministries at Northland strives to create a welcoming environment for individuals with disabilities and their families. It is our goal for each student to have the opportunity to access the Word of God, be invited into the body of Christ, and know that Jesus Christ came for us all and wants a personal relationship with us. As our children have continued to grow up and we’ve continued to meet and serve more families, Access Ministries has had the amazing opportunity to grow.

The Upper Room for Teens, Adults

Joy Prom

The Upper Room is our first classroom uniquely designed for teens and adults in our community with disabilities to have an age-appropriate space and curriculum. We are so excited that our families can continue to worship together and be part of the larger community as their children enter into adolescence.

The Upper Room opened February 22 with an induction ceremony and celebration. Teens and adults meet there every Sunday and learn about who God is and what He has done according to His Word. They spend time worshiping, reading and learning God’s Word, as well as completing serving projects for our community. Please join us in celebrating these students and the future generations as part of our family worshiping with us in The Upper Room.

Northland’s Student Ministries hosted Access Ministries’ first Joy Prom on March 7. And what a joy it was! Our special needs guests ranged from ages 15 to 50, and for many, it was their first date and first prom ever.

It was amazing to see each guest celebrated as a member of the kingdom, and it was impressive to see our middle and high school students step up to show the love of Christ to each individual there. We are so encouraged about how this next generation is already leading us in the spirit of inclusion.

Autism Awareness Event

Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Award Offered The Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership.

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Northland’s True North Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2015 award.

Completed applications must be received by Friday, May 22, for consideration. Recipients will be notified by Friday, June 19.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have seven grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke, Lena, and Ava (2004-2010).

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
