Palm Sunday

The Foolishness of Ignoring Heaven and Choosing Hell A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR

(Read about Northland’s senior pastor, Dr. Hunter, and his life in ministry at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter.)

Luke 19:36-44 (NASB) As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!” When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

Worship focus: Worship Christ today as our Redeemer. Only He can satisfy our thirsty souls and make our joy complete. We know that our Redeemer lives and that in the end He will stand upon the earth. And we will see God with our own eyes.

O Lord Jesus Christ, on this day you received the worship of those who hailed you as their King: Accept our praise and adoration, our worship and love; and grant that we, who now confess you with our lips, may never fail to give you the service of our lives, for the honor of your holy name, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. –The Worship Sourcebook

NOTES

TALK ABOUT IT: • How is the story of the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem a picture of our individual reception of Him? • If you had been on the road that day, what role would you have played? Would you have been among the disciples getting the donkey? Would you have been in the crowd, spreading your cloak on the ground? Would you have been among the Pharisees, calling for their rebuke? Or perhaps you would have been standing at a distance, watching and wondering what it all means?

“Thomas More once said,‘If you have not chosen the Kingdom of God, it will make in the end no difference what you have chosen instead.’ Those are hard words to take. Will it really make no difference whether it was women or patriotism, cocaine or art, whisky or a seat in the Cabinet, money or science? Well, surely no difference that matters. We shall have missed the end for which we are formed and rejected the only thing that satisfies. Does it matter to a man dying in a desert, by which choice of route he missed the only well?” –C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Elders at Northland: Here to Serve BY PASTOR KEVIN URICHKO

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder … shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; … not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. —1 Peter 5:1-3 (ESV)

L

ast month, 10 men were commissioned to the role of elder at Northland, A Church Distributed. Dale Burket, Bryce Hagedorn, Tom Horvath, John Jones, Robert Jones, Nick Maroulis, David McLaughlin, Roger Shepherd, Frank Turner and Mike Wambach have all responded to God’s call on their lives to serve the church in this unique way. They join other elders who are currently ministering in the Northland community. (For information on all of our elders, please go to northlandchurch.net/staff.) God has used elders to bless, lead and guard His people throughout history. Examples abound in both the Old and New Testaments of people who exercised wisdom and maturity to equip people to live in the earthly manifestation of God’s Kingdom. While Christ is the Head of the church (Ephesians 5:23), elders are to oversee and shepherd the gathering of people in a particular area (1 Peter 5:1-2; Acts 20:28). They are involved in teaching the Bible (1 Timothy 5:17), exhorting believers toward godly living (1 Thessalonians 5:14-15), praying for those who are sick (James 5:14), disciplining those who are unrepentant (Matthew 18:17), and guarding the church from false doctrine (Acts 20:28, 31). Qualifications and characteristics of elders are listed in Titus 1:6-9 and 1 Timothy 3:1-7. These passages paint a picture of maturity in Christ to which all believers are called. We may not all serve in the local church as an elder, but the Lord is working in our lives to bring about Christlikeness as described therein: above reproach, faithful, exercising good stewardship, hospitable, self-controlled, holy, and not overbearing, quarrelsome, dishonest, violent or a lover of money, for example. Our elders serve in mutual accountability—no individual elder speaks for the church unless the elders have agreed upon a decision

P

or direction and he is speaking on behalf of the whole group. The elders meet together regularly for prayer in order to discern the Lord’s will in church matters and specific questions/needs. We are called as followers of Christ to submit to our elders (1 Peter 5:5; Hebrews 13:17), to respect them by living at peace (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13), and to pray for all our leaders (Hebrews 13:18). Since these are humble men, they do not draw attention to themselves, but are available when called upon. If you have a need for prayer, godly counsel, encouragement in the faith or clarification on biblical teaching, please connect with an elder on our website or after any worship service. Nine Northland elders serve in a governing office for up to a sixyear term. See page 11 for a list of the current “Governing Elders.” These “Governing Elders” are responsible for the overall doctrinal and operational integrity of the church. They directly oversee the pastors and staff. Our pastors (who also serve in the role of elder) and executive directors work closely together with them in order to create environments for ministry, which enable you to meaningfully encounter God and respond to Him. In total, more than 50 elders are currently serving in the Northland community. Many are available for prayer after each of our worship services and serve directly in the ministries that operate in and through Northland. The 10 elders commissioned in February serve at our Longwood site, but there are elders involved in leadership at each of our other locations, too. Know the heart of our God through the provision of elders among us according to Jeremiah 23:4: “I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing.”

The Life God Changes May Very Well Be …

Yours E

ach year Northlanders are sent out all over the world on what we call Distributed Journeys. These short-term mission trips are done for a multitude of reasons, but the primary reason is that God has tasked the church with taking the gospel to the entire world (Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8). As a church distributed, we seek to participate in obedience to this commission primarily through partnerships with other churches around the world and other organizations that God has raised up to help the church focus on specific areas of need. By our working in conjunction with these partners, the ministry service of a short-term trip can be multiplied into long-term impact. Just as significant as the ministry service that is done on the mission trip is the impact that such a trip has on the team members themselves. These trips will take you out of your comfort zone in many different areas, stretch you in ways you were not aware you could or should be stretched, and provide you with potentially life-changing experiences. It is in the midst of these situations that we most often see God work dramatically in a person’s life, bringing God’s eternal perspective more sharply into focus and moving the person to a deeper faith walk with the Lord. Distributed Journeys have already started for 2011, but it is certainly not too late for you to consider joining a trip. The complete list of trips can be found on the left. Three of these trips are highlighted below, each one headed to a very different part of the world. These descriptions and similar information for all of the trips can be found at www.SomedayIsToday.net.

Brazil

Travel down the Amazon on a medical boat, stopping at a different village every day to minister to the needs of the people. You’ll become a part of the village community for the entire day, providing medical treatment, helping with Vacation Bible School, and partaking in construction, doorto-door evangelism, grooming (beauty/barber shop) and soccer/sports outreach. You also will distribute clothing, shoes, toys, personal hygiene products and other supplies to the neediest people in the villages. Each day wraps up with a worship service, during which it isn’t uncommon for people to give their lives to Christ or for baptisms to occur in the Amazon River. For more information, contact Felipe Santos, the team leader, at acts1.8@earthlink.net.

Kenya

AIDS care and compassion are at the heart of this mission trip. This team partners with Christ’s Hope International, and the major thrust of this initiative is to care for the children of parents suffering from HIV/AIDS. This is done through education, food and spiritual nourishment as the team members spend time with these children, sharing the message of Jesus Christ. This will be a small team of eight members. For more information, contact Marianne Testa, the team leader, at mbrookstesta@hotmail.com.

Sri Lanka

As a result of more than two decades of Civil War, tens of thousands of Sri Lankan children have been orphaned. Team members will work directly with orphans in a fun Vacation Bible School-type atmosphere at a camp just outside Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The camp is supported by Kithu Sevana, our partner church in Sri Lanka. The ability to give hugs, share of yourself and love on children is the only requirement. In addition, this team will have the opportunity to serve in the areas of counseling, agriculture and training in technical skills, such as woodworking and auto mechanics. For more information, contact John Tardonia, the team leader, at john.tardonia@northlandchurch.net.

MEET THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. O

ne of the most practical ways to “be the church” everywhere, every day is by serving locally in the community. At Northland, service is not just something we do; it’s an essential part of who we are. Serving in the local community is a very tangible way of demonstrating God’s love for those around us. We know that figuring out where, how and when to serve can be challenging. That’s why we have an entire page on our website dedicated to helping you find opportunities to serve regularly in the community! We take care of all the details so that all you have to do is sign up and serve! Just visit serve.northlandchurch.net, and click on “Serve Locally.” There you will find a list of upcoming projects for which you can volunteer. Just click on the name of the project to find out more information. Once you find a project you are interested in, be sure to register online, as space for many projects is limited. Projects are listed and open for registration four weeks in advance, and new projects are added all the time, so check back often. Whether you serve on one of our Local Serve Days, volunteer at Northland or work with one of our local partner organizations, there are opportunities available to use the time, talents and gifts God has given to you. We have opportunities for all ages and abilities, so sign up today! Here is a list of some of our projects in April. Over the past year, this mom and daughter have faithfully shared their love of Christ as well as their fun-loving hearts with our 3-year-olds on Sunday evenings. Their excitement and enthusiasm as they greet the children each week are contagious! Thank you, Stephanie and Lauren, for all the love and creativity you bring each week to help our children learn who God is and how much He loves them.

Why did you draw that? Alexander in Children’s Church drew a picture of Jesus being tempted in the desert. Jesus resisted temptation and battled Satan using God’s Word.

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

Vision Statement

To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

Mission Statement

To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

What is a “church distributed”? Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as Distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

If you wish to learn more about the church distributed you may purchase the book Church Distributed, by Dr. Joel C. Hunter, at the Northland Bookstore or Amazon.com. All proceeds go to Northland.

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

Worship Times

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

¿Habla español?

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

northlandchurch.net

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
