Since before the beginning of time, God has known you. He created you for relationship — with Him and others. But sin entered the world, spoiling all of creation and sabotaging our relationships. Because of our sinful nature, we deserve God’s ultimate punishment — death. We do not pursue God. We cannot get to Him on our own.

The Great Misunderstanding of Religion A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR

Luke 24:1-5 (NASB) But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?”

Worship focus: Worship Christ today as our Redeemer. Only He can satisfy our thirsty souls and make our joy complete. We know that our Redeemer lives and that in the end He will stand upon the earth.

And we will see God with our own eyes.

What does Easter mean to me?

Since before the beginning of time, God has known you. He created you for relationship — with Him and others. But sin entered the world, spoiling all of creation and sabotaging our relationships. Because of our sinful nature, we deserve God’s ultimate punishment — death. We do not pursue God. We cannot get to Him on our own.

But He pursued us, leaving Heaven and coming to live among us. Christ was willing to suffer and die, purchasing our freedom through His death on the cross, paying the penalty for our sin with His own blood. Though He was crucified, death could not hold Him. He rose again, and because He has conquered death, we have hope of life eternal.

How can I be saved?

If we acknowledge our sin and our need of a Savior, trusting in His mercy, grace and goodness, we will be saved!

• Romans 3:23: “ … for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God …” (NIV).

• Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (NASB).

• John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (NASB).

A Conversation About Community E

aster is a unique opportunity to become more deeply connected to Jesus Christ. But if we want to stay connected to Him, then we have to stay connected to His people, the body of Christ. Why? Because the pursuit of loving God is inextricably connected to the pursuit of loving others (1 John 4:7-12).

Lately, conversations have been happening around Northland about what it truly means to be in community as a church distributed. Many of these conversations are being led by Sean Cooper, Northland’s minister on Sunday nights, and Jeremy Jobson, our minister at Oviedo. Respond recently sat down with Sean and Jeremy to learn more ...

RESPOND: Northland is BIG and meets in so many places! How are people finding community?

SEAN: You’re right; it is a big place. I think to ignore that is kind of silly. Still, I find that the more people worship with Northland and are around other worshipers, the less “big” this place seems. Everything here really does begin and end with Christ.

So if we’re only focusing on the size of this place, we’re constantly going to feel overwhelmed. We’re not the point; God is the point. I think once we start crossing that line, everything becomes smaller in a sense. God becomes bigger, but He also becomes more intimate ... everything starts becoming more intimate.

JEREMY: Agreed. The more we pursue Christ, the more we start gravitating toward one another and heading in one direction. Our eyes become open to the possibilities of all the relationships available to us because it’s coming out of our interaction with Christ. He came and pursued us, and in light of our relationship with Him, He is sending us out to pursue others. Ultimately, we accept responsibility for finding ways to connect with people naturally. Maybe it’s introducing ourselves to other couples who are picking up their kids at the same time as we are. Or maybe we look in the newspaper or online to connect with other groups—singles, college-age, women’s groups, men’s Bible studies. That information is always available. Maybe start attending the same service each week and sitting in the same place so we can start to look for people and introduce ourselves. We may eventually find ways to be in community together: participating in a Local Serve Day, or joining a Bible study or a small group. There’s no shortcut to being in community; it’s a long obedience in the same direction.

NITY

SEAN: It’s also determining in the car on the way to church that we’re going to be fully present. And I say this from personal struggle that many times we view church as a destination where we can “check out.” It’s almost as if people are a distraction. I’m going to go to church, and I don’t want to be distracted by anyone. I just want to focus on Jesus. I think that changes when we decide to be as fully present as we can during this time, asking the Holy Spirit to supernaturally do something that we can’t do—give us eyes to see and ears to hear what’s going on around us. We don’t have to come with this pressure that we’re going to build lifelong relationships or meet our best friend.

That stuff might happen, but just being fully present with the people around us in that moment is key, making people feel welcome, listening to them, praying with them, etc.

RESPOND: The fastest-growing segment of our community doesn’t worship in a church building. How can someone who worships online find community at Northland?

JEREMY: I think the dynamic is exactly the same whether we walk into Longwood or Hagerty High School in Oviedo, or connect online. It’s not Joel’s job to get us connected to other individuals; it’s our response to the call that God has placed on our lives to love Christ and love others.

SEAN: Having logged on as a participant and having been a Web minister, there is community happening online. Like Jeremy said, it really requires the same ingredients— vulnerability, reaching out to people around us, being fully present. When I’ve interacted with folks online, there are always people who are just trying to figure out how online worship works. But I would say the majority of people are listening to each other, praying for each other, reaching out to each other. I’m not sure how relationships are the same or different when we’re friends with someone who is online in another state, but I feel like it’s more similar than it is dissimilar.

RESPOND: Pastor Joel is talking all year about being freed by Christ from bondage. How does God use community to help us find freedom?

JEREMY: The abundant life that is in Christ is found in relationships with others, and Northland is a great place to find those. Recognizing our own brokenness is a huge deal because how that plays into healthy relationships is absolutely critical. There’s a stirring of the Holy Spirit, people being more vulnerable and asking for forgiveness for things that they might normally just brush aside. And it seems like the quality of relationships is getting significantly deeper among people who are not only seeking forgiveness from their Creator, but looking at the relationships around them and seeking forgiveness in those. When we experience wholeness not just personally, but also in relationships, that’s when things go to a whole different level.

Building Relationships in Haiti— with Others and Christ

“Someday” became “today” for me April 3 in Haiti.

J

ack Gritter, Bill Sloan, Rich Arndt and I joined Charlie DeTellis, the on-site director for New Missions in Haiti.

New Missions has been in Haiti for 28 years. The ministry now has 26 schools, churches, medical clinics and an outreach that touches thousands. Most of its financial support comes from people like you and me, sponsoring children.

Brazil — July 9-19 Soccer Trip: Participate in soccer camps.

Arizona — July 11-25 Build relationships with Navajo families through service projects.

Jamaica — July 16-23 Family Trip: Build a community center.

Zambia — July 17-26 Church planting in at least two unreached villages in Western Zambia.

Ukraine — July 17-30 Youth Camp: Facilitate a youth camp.

Egypt — July 27–August 10 Provide sports ministry for Egyptian youth.

Brazil — July 30-August 7 Youth Trip: Ministry in Manaus and serving villages along the Amazon.

lunch. We asked them if they were Christians. They both said no. We asked them if they wanted to be Christians.

They both said no.

Charlie continued talking with them in Creole, but then he got quieter. I could make out a few words, like “rebellion” and “salvation.” He asked them again if they wanted to trust Jesus, and I heard each of them say yes! We prayed right then and welcomed them into God’s family!

One day we came across three people separating the chaff from the beans. It looked like it was snowing! Their faces were full of joy and smiles. It was an amazing sight.

Not knowing the language was difficult for me, but the children didn’t care. I learned to say, “Bon jou” for “Good morning” and, “Bon swa” for “Good afternoon.” I also pointed at myself and said, “Mickey.”

Since I have always loved playing with children, I did that every chance I got! Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3, NIV). People started calling me the “Pied Piper” because I marched around the schoolyard, and 40 children followed me. When I sat down, they sat down. When I talked, they mimicked me. When I said, “Sit down” and motioned with my hands

But if you focus on the people—the beautiful people filled with love and joy and faith—then you will jump in and do whatever you can.

Our group worked on breaking down fragile walls (damaged in the 2009 earthquake), building new walls, and preparing supplies to be moved to the schools and churches. We loved seeing how the pastors and teachers were encouraged by our team.

A true highlight of our week: We now have three new sisters in Christ! One day we came across Michelin, a young woman, with her 2-year-old daughter, breaking rocks with a hammer. We pulled over and gave them water. Charlie said that in his 28 years of being in Haiti, he had never seen a woman doing this. With a broken voice, he explained that it is very hard work, but if they can break enough rocks to fill a truck, they can earn $5 to $8. It takes several days’ work to fill a truck. Michelin really touched my heart.

The next day, we asked Martha, the school administrator at New Missions, to look for Michelin. We also searched for her, but did not find her. On the third day, Martha found Michelin and talked and prayed with her. Michelin accepted Jesus! Hallelujah! Charlie and Martha will continue to care for her and her sweet daughter.

Your two other new sisters in Christ are Lovely Luc (pronounced “Leek”) and Nicole. Lovely is being sponsored by one of Jack Gritter’s colleagues. She came to the New Missions compound with her friend Nicole and joined us for

to sit down, they repeated, “Sit down” and made the same motion with their hands. I then said, “No, no, no.” They repeated, “No, no, no!” I laughed so hard!

The kids grabbed my hands and took me on a walk overlooking the valley.

I pretended I was exhausted.

Some pulled on my hands, and others pushed me from behind. I started leaning backward. All of a sudden, I heard, “Ahhhh … AHHHH” louder and louder. Suddenly, they all jumped away, as I was too big for them to push forward. We shared so much laughter! Playing with children works in any language.

As we left the school, the children started chasing our truck. Some of them ran after us for five minutes, shouting, “Mickey, Mickey, Mickey!” I was already in love with them.

I will never, ever forget them.

ne of the most practical ways to “be the church” everywhere, every day is by serving locally in the community. At Northland, service is not just something we do; it’s an essential part of who we are. Serving in the local community is a very tangible way of demonstrating God’s love for those around us.

We know that figuring out where, how and when to serve can be challenging. That’s why we have an entire page on our website dedicated to helping you find opportunities to serve regularly in the community!

We take care of all the details so that all you have to do is sign up and serve!

Just visit serve.northlandchurch.net, and click on “Serve Locally.” There you will find a list of upcoming projects for which you can volunteer. Just click on the name of the project to find out more information.

Once you find a project you are interested in, be sure to register online, as space for many projects is limited.

Projects are listed and open for registration four weeks in advance, and new projects are added all the time, so check back often.

Whether you serve on one of our Local Serve Days, volunteer at Northland or work with one of our local partner organizations, there are opportunities available to use the time, talents and gifts God has

given to you. We have opportunities for all ages and abilities, so sign up today!

A weekday cooperative learning environment The Northland Early Learning Center will enroll children who have reached the age of 2, 3 or 4 by September 1 into the 2-, 3- or 4-year-olds class, respectively. Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Offered The Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Northland’s True North Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2011 award.

Completed application packets must be received by Friday, May 20 for consideration. Recipients will be notified by Friday, June 17. The Respond newspaper will provide bios of this year’s scholarship recipients in an upcoming issue. At your request, an application will be e-mailed to you that will provide you with all the details. About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

What is a “church distributed”?

Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions.

Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences.

A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.”

“There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.
