“... each one is tempted when ...” James 1:13-18 (NASB) Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures. Galatians 5:17-24 (NASB) For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Ever feel like you’re at war with yourself? Take heart — you’re not alone! In fact, you’re in good company. Paul, himself, struggled with the passions and desires of the flesh (Romans 7:15). Writing to the Galatians, he casts a harsh light on the reality of sin and its consequences, but then he trains the spotlight on an effervescent hope. In Christ, we are not a slave to our fleshy inclinations. In fact, we’ve got the power of God in us to overcome, to triumph, to change that war within ourselves. For children of God, this war has already been won. Consider your present circumstances and relationships. Which passions and desires rule your behaviors and thoughts? What kind of fruit is your life currently producing? When you accepted Christ, you came alive by His Spirit. You are a new creation, down to your roots. In Galatians 5, Paul exhorts you to drink deeply of the Spirit’s power. Unlike the root of the flesh, which feeds on pride and vice, we are nourished and sustained by grace, reflecting our total reliance on Christ. A Spirit-led life is marked by an attitude of surrender. Each time we pause in a conversation to check ourselves and pray for the right response, each time we let go of our desire to “win,” the Spirit is at work in us, producing fruit. We are not the fruitgrowers; we are disciples. Our job is to trust God, moment by moment, and He will bring about the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control that change us and change the world. What does living by the Spirit look like in your daily life? What people or situations are challenging you to place greater trust in God? This week, make an effort to pause and seek His will in moments of difficulty. Remember, His Spirit is always at work.

Worship focus

Worship Christ today for His Spirit, which leads us and bears fruit in us. He has crucified the passions of our sinful nature and has given us His Spirit, which conforms us into His image.

PRAYER. Father, help us to delight in Your law, meditating on it day and night. Make us like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Through Your Spirit, ensure that our leaves never wither, and prosper whatever we do. (From Psalm 1)

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Creating Community at the Hub BY ALLISON HURTADO

Co-leaders Sean Cooper and Sarah Mattingly talk more about the unfolding purpose behind this new space. Spoiler alert: They’ve got big plans starting this month! For those who are new to Northland, or who’ve been away, what is the Hub? Sarah Mattingly: When you get right down to it, the Hub is about three things: conversation, information and connection. And now we have a cool new space to help facilitate all of that. It’s a space for newcomers and “old-timers,” a space to meet a new friend, shake a hand, ask questions, get information and brainstorm new ministry ideas. Northland is a big place. God has called us here together as a family, and we don’t want a single person to walk through these doors and feel lost, invisible or confused.

A little bird told me you have something special up your collective sleeves starting this May. Sean: Well, that little bird is right. We’ve started promoting a different profession or group each weekend. This weekend (April 27, 28 and 29) we are inviting anyone interested in the Art House to come after service to meet. The weekend after that (May 4, 5 and 6), we are focusing on medical professionals. Sarah: You can check Northland’s online calendar (northlandchurch.net/calendar) to see what we have planned! So, let me guess ... a soccer enthusiast weekend is in the works, since Sean is the world’s biggest “football” fan? Sean: Well, I love soccer (laughs). I grew up in Brazil, and I love soccer. So, we might do a weekend where we emphasize if you’re a soccer fan, if you love to watch or play, come to the Hub. These are ways to make a common interest bring Christians together. You never know when people will come up with a ministry idea, or how to use soccer to reach the community. What’s the biggest surprise you two have experienced so far? Sean: Some of the people who have volunteered to be Hub hosts are actually new to Northland! That’s so cool for us. They bring a fresh perspective, and we love that. Sarah: Hosting at the Hub doesn’t require a lot of training. We tell our volunteers if you don’t know the answer to a question someone asks, that’s OK. We will find an answer together.

Sean Cooper: I agree with Sarah. I think it’s a space we need in a church this size, for people who are looking for a relationship. I think it’s a room that helps a big church feel smaller.

I actually thought the Hub was originally designed for people who want to volunteer. Is that not true? Sean: That’s certainly part of it. When Pastor Joel preached six months ago about the first and future church, his emphasis was on how we need to get back to unleashing people for ministry. For Pastor Joel, that includes people’s listening to the Holy Spirit and responding as God evokes them. Ultimately, we want this to be a space where congregants can bring ideas and we can help connect the dots.

Can you explain where the name came from? Sarah: Well, the dictionary defines “hub” as a center of activity, a central device that connects multiple computers to a single network. Similarly, we want to be connected to a single network ... a single purpose.

Any parting thoughts? Sarah: Come check out the Hub after service! It’s not just about volunteering; it’s not just about a class or making people members. We want congregants to respond to God for the benefit of others. This is a place to figure that out.

Sean: Yeah, the name is just an easy word to symbolize a place where relationships intersect, where the Holy Spirit connects people. A hub on a bicycle is where the spokes meet; a lot can take place.

Allison Hurtado is a volunteer on the media design team. The first time she visited the Hub, she ran into an old friend she took Financial Peace University with. It was that reconnection with an old friend that inspired Allison to get involved.

What are some reasons someone would visit the Hub? Sean: We think any reason is a good reason! We don’t want the Hub to only be seen as a place for new people. Sarah and I see people who have been coming to Northland for years coming to the Hub. Whether it’s people who are new, people who heard something in service and have a question, or people who want to volunteer, the Hub is the place for connection. Sarah: Whatever the reason, our Hub hosts are there to help. They won’t always have all of the answers, but they are committed to helping people find them! Hub hosts are simply congregants with a passion for drawing us closer together. Oh, and they love to pray with people, too. So, I wouldn’t come just to take a look at those nice flat screens and iPads? Sean: (laughs) The way I view it is, there are handfuls of TVs to help display pictures and announcements. There are iPads to help us if a congregant wants to sign up for a class or register for a volunteer opportunity. We can help do that. Can parents bring their kids? Sean: Yes! Of course. My favorite part of the Hub is the kids area. We encourage people to pick up their kids from Children’s Church and bring them over here. It’s a great place where parents can connect while their kids are having a good time. Kids aren’t shoved to the side and made to be quiet; there are games for them to play while adults have conversations.

Go on a DISTRIBUTED JOURNEY!

SERVE GLOBALLY The Mission Field Next Door BY DR. DAN LACICH

iving in Orlando gives one an opportunity for being a missionary that is unlike anything that most people ever experience. You can be a representative for Jesus, i.e. be a missionary, without ever leaving your neighborhood. If you need evidence of this, I want you to try something the next time you are out in public at the mall or grocery store. Simply keep your ears open to the various languages you hear spoken around you. Chances are you will certainly hear some variation of Spanish, with a unique flavor, depending on the country of origin or the speaker. But don’t be surprised if you hear Chinese since there are 50,000 native Chinese in Florida. You will hear Hindi because there are 70,000 native Indians as well as 50,000 Filipinos, 45,000 Chinese, 30,000 Vietnamese, and on it goes. In fact, there are more than 3 million people living in Florida who have come from another country and speak another language as their heart language. Being a missionary is no longer only about crossing an ocean and taking the gospel to people who live in another culture. The fact is many of them have crossed an ocean and have moved onto your street. For many years, we have understood the Great Commission as requiring a special trip to another place. But when Jesus said “Go” in Matthew 28:18-20, what He literally said was, “Going therefor” or “As you go.” In other words, fulfilling the Great Commission of making disciples of all nations, all ethnic groups, is something that you do along the way in life. So how does this relate to the Chinese or Pakistani or Brazilian who has moved onto your street? In years past, Americans understood what it meant to love your neighbor. When a new person moved in, the people who already lived on the street went over to welcome him or her to the neighborhood. Often the greeting included bringing food and even helping move furniture in. The conversation would normally include an introduction to the community, where

the market was, the quality of schools and who else lived on the block. As Christians, we need to recapture that simple love of neighbor. So let me give you a few simple steps to begin the process of being a missionary to your neighborhood: 1) Introduce yourself, especially when new people move in. Take the risk. Step outside your comfort zone, and simply go knock on the door, or when they happen to be outside and you are driving by, get out of your car and say hello. If they moved in a long time ago, apologize for not introducing yourself earlier. 2) Invite them over. Next time you are throwing some burgers on the grill, throw on a few extra, and invite them over. Make use of holidays as times to invite them in. Thanksgiving is perfect for this since it is a uniquely American holiday. 3) Find out what their heart language is, and get a DVD of the Jesus film in that language as a gift for them. It may mean starting a simple home church that they attend. It may mean connecting them with a church of people from their own culture and language. The point is to reach out to them with the love of Christ, introduce them to Jesus, and get them connected to a group of followers of Jesus so they can grow to maturity in Christ.

ooking to get connected in ministry with others passionate about serving the community? The focus of the Distributed Service team ranges from social justice issues to serving the congregants who find themselves in difficult places due to unforeseen circumstances. Many opportunities exist for deeper engagement. Over the past few months, there has been a move toward volunteering at and around the church site. Tasks ranging from parking to security to administrative work have opened doors to be a family and take care of the chores at home. Dr. Hunter continues to teach us that we should be serving our neighbors, the community and beyond. To that end, on the new Serve site, you can find servant leadership opportunities in the jails we serve, as an advocate for a homeless family, or even walking the new journey of how Northland can serve within the human trafficking movement. Several of the servant leadership roles require training. But no worries; the training classes have been scheduled, and you can sign up. We encourage everyone to complete the “Understanding Poverty” class taught by Emily Tallman. We also are looking for folks to come alongside Emily and train the trainers for this class and others. The ministry areas that the Distributed Service team facilitates include Disaster Response, Prison and Jail Transition, the Homeless Initiative, Family Advocacy Office, Resource Point, LifeHope, New Moves Housing program, Local Serve (behind the

scenes), Human Trafficking, Adoption and Foster Care, and Safe Families. If God is tugging at your heart to become involved in the lives of members of families or men and women who need to hear about the hope you have in Jesus, step up and reach out through the new Serve website, northlandchurch.net/ serve, where you can find all the opportunities available. You can sort by ministry area to narrow your search. Don’t wait; do it now! One of our servant leaders, Geneva, shared that she finds joy in serving her neighbors. In fact, she shared that she has received much more from those she works with than she has given. y time as a Bachelor of Social Work intern at LifeHope has been an adventure, to say the least! God faithfully taught me, tested me and, ultimately, revealed more of His character to me during this internship. Coming from Northland at Oviedo to “big church” gave me a more complete picture of the mission of Northland and, ultimately, the church. One common theme Jesus revealed to me was His desire for His church, His bride, to be transparent and welcoming to the world. The church is a place for the broken and the sick. The moments ingrained in my heart are the times I came alongside someone [who was]

doubting [his or her] worthiness, [his or her] ability to be loved by Jesus, and fought those lies with [that person]. The people who make up LifeHope, while they are broken, are hungry for redemption and love. I do not think they realize how much they have impacted me, but if they are reading this now, I want them to know they have been used by God to change my heart. Needless to say, my time in this ministry has been used to refine my heart and grow my relationship with Christ. – Devon Lang

VOLUNTEER at Northland Volunteer With Public Safety, Security and Parking Northland has a variety of ways for people to volunteer on the Security and Public Safety teams. James Li, who had a vision for our security teams to be formed, shares about the beginnings of these teams, as well as ways you can get involved. Please share with the congregation the early beginnings of the Northland Security and Public Safety teams. James: Northland is very intentional on stewarding God’s money and the property. In earlier Northland Rink days, Pastor Joel’s son Josh Hunter was very proactive in hiring Seminole sheriff’s deputies to handle the tithes and offerings pickup as well as hire our first “night watchman,” Rick Bradshaw, to oversee lock-up of the Rink facility at night. Shortly after this time, beginning in 2007, I started having dreams in the middle of the night that God wanted us to build a security team in anticipation of the new Worship Center with the primary directive of child safety. At this time, I was director of Student Ministries, going to high school events and middle school campouts, wearing jeans and flipflops, so running a security team was not first on my mind. I started to share these dreams with our elders and Pastor Joel, and they gave me a glimpse of the size and scope of the Worship Center as we know it today.

How big is the Worship Center? James: Northland’s Worship Center is approximately 176,000 square feet, with the sanctuary being able to seat more than 3,000 people. It has three children’s wings, a bookstore, classrooms, a café and the new Hub. We also have nine parking lots and, as I mentioned earlier, the Rink building next door. With the facility being so large, it can be difficult to get plugged in. What is your suggestion for someone to get involved? James: I like to encourage people to volunteer as one of their next steps. One of the best things someone did for me after helping me recommit my life to Christ and read the Bible was encourage me to volunteer and get involved. To a guy who grew up in a church of about 150 people, Northland seemed really big, but by volunteering, it made a big church “small” for me. More importantly, I felt like I was part of a community, playing my part, using the gifts God had given to me to fulfill His purposes. What volunteer opportunities are available on the Northland Security and Public Safety teams? James: There are a variety of ways for people to volunteer, including as first responders, law enforcement and security [volunteers], and directing traffic in the parking lot for weekend worship and special events. Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Offered The Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Northland’s True North Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2013 award. Completed application packets must be received by Friday, May 24 for consideration. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.
