A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR OSCAR MURIU Pastor Oscar dedicated his life to Christ in 1983 and has served as the senior pastor of the Nairobi Chapel since 1991. In that time, he has seen the church grow from a mere 20 people to more than 3,000 people, with 26 church plants. His personal mission is to raise up a legacy of African leaders for the Church of Christ worldwide. He holds a B.Sc. (zoology) from the University of Delhi in India and an MDiv from the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (NEGST). Pastor Oscar and his wife, Bea, have four daughters: Chiru, Chiku, Wanja and Janelle.

We have a growing partnership with Nairobi Chapel, in which we work together for the planting of churches across the globe.

The chapel has a goal of planting 300 key churches in the largest gateway cities in the world. Our partnership includes working together to train pastors in the impoverished areas of those cities so they can plant multiplying distributed churches. The pilot group for this is 100 pastors from the slums of Nairobi who are going through Distributed Church Planter Training, being led by a team made up of people from Nairobi Chapel, Northland, and Northland’s Kenya Distributed Church Planting Network.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

‘There Is Life Everywhere’

I

t was a moment that changed me, and I almost missed it. Touring The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, I was rushing through a small room to catch up with some friends when the painting caught my eye. Inspired by a story of Leo Tolstoy, 19th-century Russian artist Nikolai Yaroshenko had purposefully layered his oils on this canvas back in 1888. Five diverse prisoners – a soldier, a worker, a peasant, a mother and a child – are huddled together, peering through the barred window of a halted prison railcar as the child reaches through the steel bars and feeds pigeons on the railway platform. Even in the midst of an awful predicament, they were making a choice to engage with something. With what? Yaroshenko’s title gave me the clue: “There Is Life Everywhere.”

Regardless of the day or the dilemma, we each have an opportunity to embrace something: not only the fact that our heart is beating, but why it’s beating. Yaroshenko beckons us to look beyond our immediate circumstances and seize the privilege of being human.

It’s a powerful truth to ponder.

But then I saw him. He, too, was inside the railcar. A sixth prisoner.

In the shadowed background, silhouetted against the light of the barred window on the opposite side of the carriage. With an empty stare, he was looking the other way into a stark, gray sky. Missing out on the life-filled moment unfolding behind him on the other side of the railcar, he seems lost in a sea of his own hopelessness.

Then it struck me. Yaroshenko wanted me to see him – this other guy on the opposite side of the railcar who was missing the Life.

“There Is Life Everywhere.” With his title, Yaroshenko is making a statement. But with the deliberate, thoughtful strokes of his brush, he is also asking a question. A question posed to anyone who will turn down the volume of his or her circumstances and listen. A question addressed not only to our ears but our hearts: Will you embrace the Life that’s everywhere?

Like a well-aimed arrow, his question pierced the silent space of the gallery and penetrated my heart. Reeling, I sat down on the only bench in the room. Not only had I just been rushing through my tour of the museum; I was just completing a season in which I’d been rushing through my life. And imprisoned by my busyness and difficulties.

Sure, hectic and challenging seasons in our lives are unavoidable, and they can even be invigorating. But they can also turn deadly if we let the sound of the chaos drown out the question Yaroshenko is asking: Will you embrace the Life that’s everywhere?

Yes, Nikolai wanted me to see this other guy on the opposite side of the railcar, who was missing the Life. Because too often, I’m that guy. The wince went deep. How many times in my journey have I moved to the other side of that railcar and stared out through prison bars of difficulty, pain, disappointment, distraction, hurt, stubbornness or just plain busyness? How often do I look in the opposite direction and miss out on Life?

Those are questions I’m still asking, and they are changing me.

SERVE LOCALLY Hundreds Attend Poverty Classes L

ast month hundreds of Northlanders and community members attended an all-day session on “Understanding Poverty and Serving to Empower.”

Emily Tallman and Maria Penzes shared a new paradigm on how to serve others well by not enabling or adding harm to the situation. It was a thought-provoking session. One class member shared, “This has made me reevaluate how I think about poverty.” A community partner shared, “Our team will need to discuss how to tweak our process so we can make incremental change in how we serve others.”

A medical social worker wrote: “My biggest aha moment was the breakdown of how each class of people addresses issues/decisions. This weekend at work, I was more empathic, and I also empowered them to do for themselves what they can do!”

“We have been unknowingly creating dependence with some of our programs,” a community partner wrote. “We are anxious to tweak our programs so they are less toxic and provide more dignity in the exchange.”

Another, an exec-director of a help center, shared a desire to bring its board of directors for a tour of the Northland Care Center to help the board members understand how to serve others well. They also are interested in how they might do a poverty simulation in their county.

Based on the book When Helping Hurts, by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert, how we define “poverty” is how we move toward serving others. Our definition may be based on material poverty; thus, we will respond with material items.

Here’s a preview of coming events; check back for registration: • Classes will be offered again September 6 or September 11.

• Dignity Serves training will be offered July 18 and 19 (Friday, 6 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

• Poverty Simulation will be offered Friday, August 29 or Saturday, October 11 (three hours).

• Hear Dr. Fikkert speak about “When Helping Hurts” on Wednesday, October 1.

• “When Helping Hurts” small group experience groups are forming (six two-hour sessions).

• “Asset Mapping” training will be offered for urban community/neighborhood transformation.

Disaster Response Awareness Weekend

J

une 1 is the start of hurricane season. Do you have a plan? Prepared your emergency kit? Join us May 31 to June 2 in the lobby after each service for valuable information on getting started. Visit our tables on building a kit, making a plan, finding a shelter, and learning to prepare for your pet’s safety.

Special needs shelters are available for those who have medical conditions that require attention; you must preregister for the shelters. Volunteers will be on hand to help fill out the registration forms.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to go on a disaster response, but didn’t know how to get involved, or maybe you’re not feeling connected. Maybe you can’t go on a deployment, but want to be involved if a local disaster

occurs. Stop by our tables for more information.

Our last deployment was to Moore, Okla., in response to the tornado that hit May 20, 2013. We took our mobile kitchen and a team, which fed local responders and survivors, as well as assisted with debris removal and finding lost items.

Throughout the year, team members develop their skills and bond through drills, exercises, educational events, monthly meetings and local outreach events. Training is an integral part of our disaster response team. New this year is CPR and Skills Refresher Courses, offered every month.

VOLUNTEER at Northland Use Your Gifts to Bless Others

ight million. That’s a BIG number. It happens to be the number of web references you’d come across if you googled “the positive benefits of volunteering.”

I was surprised so many articles, journals and excerpts existed on the topic, but I wasn’t surprised by what I read as I looked through a few of them. Here are some that were listed: • Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy.

• Volunteering increases self-confidence.

• Volunteering can strengthen the social ties that protect individuals from isolation during difficult times.

• Volunteer experiences helping others lead to a sense of greater self-worth and trust.

• Volunteering can provide motivation, a sense of achievement and even purpose.

• Volunteering connects you to others.

I’ve experienced some, if not all, of these during my years of active volunteering. I’ve also had many of our volunteers express some of the same sentiments as they’ve shared with me their personal volunteer experiences here at Northland. One of these volunteers is Karen Hufman. Recently, Karen took the time to tell us a little bit about her volunteer experiences at Northland.

Karen Hufman Northland: Tell us how you got connected to Northland.

Karen: Well, that’s actually my testimony. I was having suicidal thoughts and was as far away from God as you could possibly get. I hadn’t gone to church since I was a child, and didn’t believe in God, much less Jesus. Someone suggested I call Northland before I checked out, so I did.

I was connected with Pastor Gus, who met with me after the service (which was Good Friday 14 years ago!), and I read the prayer of salvation. From that point on, my life was changed forever.

Northland: What a testimony! Thank you for sharing that with us. What about volunteering? How did you get involved with helping here at Longwood?

Karen: After attending Northland for about seven to eight years, I decided I needed to volunteer. Pastor Joel had been saying over and over that we needed to serve and use the gifts and talents God has given us to fulfill His purpose. It kept hitting me until I finally decided to take action. He made a call for volunteers to help in LifeHope, and he mentioned data entry. That was right up my alley and something I could easily do. I did that for a while, and it really helped me to put my life into perspective and feel blessed in order to get through some challenging times. I’ve done a variety of volunteering at Northland since then.

Northland: How have you seen God move through your experiences and the relationships you’ve formed as a volunteer?

Karen: I have experienced God in several ways since I started volunteering to earn hours for a Distributed Journey to Costa Rica. The first one evolved around the opportunity to fill a slot for Communion check-in. Someone was unable to do it for a couple of months at the exact time that I needed to volunteer to earn my hours for a scholarship. I absolutely loved doing it!

Another volunteer role I’m currently involved with is weekend Info Kiosk host. Not only have I made a great friend in Terry Wenner, but I discovered Pastor Dan’s Bible study while learning what Northland has to offer (which I needed to know in order to be an Info Kiosk host). My husband and I joined Pastor Dan’s Sunday morning class so we could get to know other Northlanders. We’ve made new friends through it, and I feel we are an integral part of the church now … that we really belong. I find myself smiling more than I ever have, and I love to volunteer at Northland. I feel blessed with the people God puts in my path here, and look forward to spending the rest of my life being a part of this church.

Northland: What are you looking forward to as you continue to serve God in this way?

Karen: I can’t wait until October, when I retire and can be much more active in helping our congregation. I am passionate about helping people see the historical evidence of Christ and that Jesus was who He said He was. I also look forward to taking a lot of the classes and getting involved with the events Northland has to offer.

Northland: Any thoughts or advice for those who may be considering volunteer opportunities?

Karen: Do it! You’ll be so glad you did. It opens a new, exciting world. You’ll feel good about helping others in our congregation and community. There are many opportunities, and everyone is so willing to help you in the process and walk alongside you. This is one way God uses experiences and people you meet to grow and disciple you.

Perhaps you’ve felt called to volunteer using your giftings, talents and skills. Maybe you’ve been considering it and thought there couldn’t be something for you to do, or you only have a small amount of time each week or month to give. Regardless of what your gifting, passion, and availability may be, we can connect you to a role where you can respond to God’s call to serve His people. “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10, NASB).

Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Offered The Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have six grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke and Ava (2004-2010).
