W O R S H I P F O C U S:
Worship Christ today for His Spirit of truth. He is looking for true worshipers, who worship Him in Spirit and in truth. All of our lives can be acts of worship — offered as a fitting sacrifice to Him. In view of His mercy, let us offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This is our true and proper worship. S C R I P T U R E F O C U S:
John 4:19-26 (NIV)
Q U OT E: The humblest and the most unseen activity in the world can be the true worship of God. Work and worship literally become one. Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him for ever; and man carries out that function when he does what God sent him into the world to do. Work well done rises like a hymn of praise to God. This means that the doctor on his rounds, the scientist in his laboratory, the teacher in his classroom, the musician at his music, the artist at his canvas, the shop assistant at his counter, the typist at her typewriter, the housewife in her kitchen — all who are doing the work of the world as it should be done are joining in a great act of worship. – William Barclay, The Revelation of John, Vol. 1 (1961)
P R AY E R : People of God, worship the living God today! Remember that out of nothing God created the heavens and earth. Remember that God raised Jesus from the powerlessness of death to the power of his right hand. Remember that not even the gates of hell can stand against God’s purposes. Behold your God, who reigns now and forever! – “The Worship Sourcebook”
“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you — I am he.”

Northland, A Church Distributed northlandchurch.net/about WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:1939; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Man
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)
The Church
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.
OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE
A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.
OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO
At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.
We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

I have joined the long defeat That falling set in motion And all my strength and energy Are raindrops in the ocean So conditioned for the win To share in victor’s stories But in the place of ambition’s din I have heard of other glories And I pray for an idea And a way I cannot see It’s too heavy to carry And impossible to leave I can’t just fight when I think I’ll win That’s the end of all belief And nothing has provoked it more Than a possible defeat And I pray for an idea And a way I cannot see It’s too heavy to carry And impossible to leave We walk a while we sit and rest We lay it on the altar I won’t pretend to know what’s next But what I have I’ve offered And I pray for a vision And a way I cannot see It’s too heavy to carry And impossible to leave And I pray for inspiration And a way I cannot see It’s too heavy to carry And impossible to leave It’s too heavy to carry And I will never leave – Sara Groves, “The Long Defeat,” from “Tell Me What You Know,” November 2007
I
sat in the Northland Rink last Friday evening with nearly 500 other folks who long to see an end to human trafficking. Together we were soaking in the beauty of the wisdom Sara Groves offered through her songs. She shared “The Long Defeat” (lyrics on the left), inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien in “The Lord of the Rings.” The passage that inspired the song belongs to Lady Galadriel, who is telling Frodo about the long struggle of her people against the evil forces. She describes the Lord of the Elves, who in this highly symbolic novel represents Christ: He has dwelt in the West since the days of dawn, and I have dwelt with him years uncounted; for ere the fall of Nargothrond or Gondolin I passed over the mountains, and together through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat. Sara reminded her audience that Tolkien held this view of all of human history as a “long defeat.” While he believed we can experience momentary triumphs, real victory will not be known in this world until Christ returns. The thought overwhelmed me as I looked around the room. Many there I knew well. I knew their stories. It was such a beautiful thought about the journey we are on together. We each bring our own pain, our own familiarity with the Fall, our own long struggle against the forces of evil in our world. So often in the Christian community, we are ready to talk about living the victorious life — and certainly all of us want to be there. But the paradox for us is that we all belong to a great defeat. In spite of impossible odds, in spite of the fact that we might be losing, we fight, but we fight together. I love the way Andrew Barber, an English professor at The Stony Brook School, articulates it: We fight the long defeat because results are not as important as our Father’s delight. We fight the long defeat because we are not the authorities over “success.” We fight the long defeat because the final victory is coming.

Them for Us, Here
How The Tipping Point is influencing Uganda, and how Uganda is influencing us BY OLIVIA B., GLOBAL MISSIONS DEPARTMENT
T
he Tipping Point is in Uganda, evident in both the most populated cities and the most remote villages. On a recent trip to the country, Northlanders saw how the church is expanding rapidly and beginning to grow deep in spiritual maturity, thanks to The Tipping Point, a work that began years ago and continues to flourish as Northland and Ugandan churches partner to learn from one another and grow in understanding of God’s Kingdom. Three and a half years ago, Northland began a relationship with a network of Ugandan pastors who are impacting their country in a critical way. The relationship started with Pastor Robert Nabulere, a “catalytic” and “humble” leader, as described by those who know him. In 2011, he attended a Northland distributed church training event at a church-planting conference. The timing of this event was divine, as Pastor Robert had a vision to plant 500 churches in Uganda but was facing an obstacle that the distributed church vision helped address. Culture and colonialism have influenced Ugandan Christians — up until now — to strive toward building “elephant churches,” a term used to describe institutionalized churches. Large buildings, high structures and a heavy emphasis on ritual often make the establishment of new churches a laborious and expensive endeavor. This reality hit Pastor Robert early on in his church-planting efforts. As he did the math, he realized that the time and money that would be required to plant 500 elephant churches simply did not exist. Thus, the distributed church philosophy was a revolutionary concept as Pastor Robert realized that church in forms of small groups of community could impact his country in a way traditional churches weren’t. In the following years, Northland worked closely with Pastor Robert and networks of pastors and leaders throughout Uganda, conducting a series of trainings on church planting and leadership development that led to the establishment of thousands of new churches. Currently, an estimated 4,179 churches have been planted by or adopted into Northland’s 13 partner networks that span the north, west, east and central parts of Uganda. During an April trip to the country, Northland staff members spent several days offering more in-depth training to 16 network leaders. However, over 80 pastors and leaders invest in each congregation at some level, at the very least mentoring and empowering other leaders in each church. A powerful depiction of mentorship and leadership development is seen in four generations of discipleship, starting with Pastor Robert, who discipled Pastor Michael. He, in turn, mentored Pastor Baker, who is now discipling Francis, a Bible study leader in his church. As pastors like these disciple and raise up other leaders, church expansion inevitably takes place. Many of the network pastors have come to embrace this vision of raising up leaders and encouraging church expansion. In contrast to the large and sometimes stagnant elephant churches, what these Ugandan pastors call “rabbit
churches” are being born throughout the various regions. What characterizes a rabbit church? Christians begin to see church as people and not as a building. Smaller congregations that meet in sometimes makeshift locations are seen as vibrant, healthy, legitimate communities of worship. This shift in ideology is monumental among Ugandan churches. Pastor Robert’s mentee, Pastor Michael Lwamunhu, is a prime example of a leader who has embraced this vision. Three years ago, he attended one of Northland’s training events. Afterward, he began to plant rabbit churches, and has been part of the formation of 163 new churches. He began his strategy by visiting boarding schools and discipling the students, who then formed churches in their own contexts. Last year, he helped start a church in one community that began with 10 members meeting in a woman’s home. Now, over 60 members actively engage in and support their body. Together they purchased a plot of land for $500 to build tents on as a place of worship. During Northland’s most recent visit, team members were honored to be part of the church’s first baptism service. Another pastor, Ibrahim Lubega, was also deeply affected by the distributed church philosophy. When he attended his first training session, he was pastoring a church in a village in the eastern region of Uganda. Upon returning to his congregation, he worked to raise up new leaders, as he felt called to start a church in the city of Luweero. From its conception, the church in Luweero was on mission to multiply. Members were encouraged to see themselves as the church, which, in turn, fostered
an environment of selfless giving and community living. Together, they support community projects and a local orphanage, taking the church beyond their weekly gathering. Despite the bounding strides that this network of Ugandan churches has made in the last several years, Christians face challenges. As they plant rabbit churches, leaders are aware of the common problem among African churches, that churches grow rapidly but do not grow in spiritual maturity. Discipleship and Scripture training from Northland are helping equip Ugandan leaders to deepen spiritual growth among their congregations. This is vital not only for the development of healthy church bodies, but also for the impact that sound scriptural understanding can have on outside communities. Muslim communities are growing in influence on Ugandan economics and society, and Christians must wrestle with standing firm in their faith while reaching their neighbors with the gospel. As Northland and Ugandan partners continue to journey together, a mutual exchange of wisdom and knowledge takes place. Northland continues to bring The Tipping Point to Uganda, while the Ugandan church helps shape our understanding of the global Kingdom. Upon returning from their recent trip to Uganda, Northland staff members Marc McMurrin and Gus Davies shared their thoughts on how the Ugandan church can help shape Northland. “They have so much to teach us about evangelism,” says Marc, “as they have no fear of telling people about Jesus.” Gus adds, “This partnership is not all dependent on ‘us for them, there’; it is also them for us, here.”
A rapidly growing church purchased a plot of land on which to gather and worship under tents. Over 60 gather weekly.

JuST Faith Summit F rom April 20 to 22, we hosted over 400 guests from 34 states at the inaugural JuST Faith Summit. Dr. Joel C. Hunter and U.S. Rep. Linda Smith guided us through discussions on prevention, restoration and justice. We were challenged and inspired by survivors, prosecutors, pastors, psychologists and counselors. We learned more about the devastating effects of pornography and how this fuels the human trafficking industry. Also, Michael W. Smith led us in a time of worship. At the end of the summit, attendees were equipped with a Faith in Action kit, which includes specific resources to lead youths, women, men and leaders through steps of awareness, prayer and prevention. We thank the large number of volunteers who were involved in creating an incredible welcoming and supportive atmosphere. Pray for the continual involvement and commitment of all who participated. We pray that Luke 4:18 may be fulfilled, when Jesus said He came to “proclaim freedom for the prisoners” and “set the oppressed free” (NIV).

‘Game Night Is Growing!’
Our resident game master, James Li, talks Game Night. BY REBECCA LANG, DIRECTOR OF MOBILIZATION
Rebecca: James, Game Night is growing! Please share all the excitement! James: Game Night is a fun event every Thursday for the whole family and includes sports, board games and video games. Rebecca: Wow! Lots to choose from! What kind of sports, board games and video games can you play at Game Night? James: We play all kinds of sports, such as soccer, martial arts, floor hockey and dodgeball. I enjoy kickball the best because I love to play it with my kids. As for board games, there are quite a few to choose from, including The Settlers of Catan, Codenames, 7 Wonders, …, but my favorite is Irk! As far as video games, there are too many to list, but the most popular is probably Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U. Rebecca: That’s amazing! Many of those games I recognize, but what’s Irk!? James: Irk! is this really cool board game that is easy to learn and fun to play. Storyville Games distributes it, and the proceeds go toward fighting human trafficking. The game is essentially like Sorry or Trouble, where you move your four pieces (in this case, marbles) around a beautiful wood board to get “home.” But the major difference is instead of winning on your own, you team up with another person, so it’s not only fun, but a great opportunity to connect with other people. Rebecca: That does sound like fun! Is there food available? James: We have teamed up with Access Ministry, and they prepare an inexpensive meal that might include a main dish such as pizza or a hot dog, chips and a drink.
GAME NIGHT Who: Families What: Game Night — sports, board games, video games When: Thursdays, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Where: Northland’s Longwood site — The Rink, the soccer field and The Hub Why: To connect and have fun! How: Just show up and bring a couple of bucks for sloppy joes. Contact: GameNight@northlandchurch.net

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have seven grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke, Lena, and Ava (2004-2010). Learn more about Pastor Hunter’s life in ministry at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives. All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47). Are you interested in learning more? We would love to help you. Together we can form the church outside the walls of a building and bring God’s love to the world. Start the journey toward being the church at one of the Intro to Distributing the Church sessions. Sign up for a session at The Hub or at distributedchurch.com.
