Worship Christ today as the Giver of all good gifts. He has put in each of us a gift that will equip us for the works He has prepared in advance for us to do.

This gift is a way for us to partake of His nature and reflect it in the world.

T H O U G H T: Before the beginning of time, you existed in the mind of God. The Creator of environments created an environment in you that only He could fill when He knit you together in your mother’s womb. He gave you a gift that could connect you in a special way to His nature.

This wiring is the conduit through which He will work in your life and use you for ministry.

It is the result of grace, and a source of joy. It provides the means for His divine influence on your heart.

Your gift is not about what you can do. When focusing on ourselves and our abilities, we are prone to performance-based relationships and assessments. Rather, your gift is about who you are in Christ.

Once connected to the power of the Holy Spirit, your spiritual gift equips you for your mission in life, your calling, and your purpose. It is the place where your “greatest need meets the world’s deep hunger,” as Frederick Buechner said.

Living – in the –

Spirit

ecently, we celebrated Pentecost, which is also known as the birthday of the church. Pentecost was when, for the first time, the Spirit was “poured out” on all flesh, just as the prophet Joel had prophesied: “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

— Joel 2:28-29, NIV (emphasis added) This is the same term Jesus used to describe the cup of salvation at the Last Supper, which is “poured out” for all (Matthew 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20). In Greek, it’s ekcheo, which is to “gush, or run greedily out.” That’s our model for church. We are the “poured out” ones.

But in what way are we poured out? Is there a shape to our poured-out-ness?

Growing up, each week at church, we recited the Nicene Creed (325). Perhaps you did too. Do you remember the rough outline? “I believe in one God, the Father. … I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ. … I believe in the Holy Spirit. …” And then these words: “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.”

“One, holy, catholic and apostolic.” This is the shape of our poured-out-ness. It is the shape of the new humanity — in Christ. Missiologist Charles Van Engen turns the adjectives into participles in order to draw out the implications for mission.

We are one (reconciling), holy (sanctifying), catholic (unifying) and apostolic (sending) church. I like that, especially when I consider our rapidly urbanizing world, which is eagerly looking for such a sign.

One: Because we are “one,” we reconcile. It’s good to remember that our denominations are the many different ways in which we are one. We love our ecclesiastical tribes, or perhaps hate them. Either way, there is only one church, expressed in many forms. Denominations are not the church; rather, they are like clothes to the body. There is only one body — the body of Christ, clothed in many ways, with many styles.

In the later stages of faith development, style gives way to substance. We become aware of our oneness, and the heart for reconciliation grows in us. In the end, we can see that we are being reconciled into one body, clothed only with the love of Christ.

Holy: Because we are “holy,” we sanctify. The word “holy” carries heavy overtones of moralism. Whatever else the church is, it is not morally superior to the rest of the world. Studies consistently show that churchgoers have the same rates of moral failure in every category as do non-churchgoers. What makes us holy is not our moral superiority. We have none. As catholic theologian James Alison suggests, what makes us holy is that we are being forgiven. That is our holiness. It is what unites us with all of creation, which is also undergoing forgiveness. When we participate in the giving and receiving of forgiveness, we are a sanctifying presence in the world.

Catholic: Because we are “catholic,” we unify. I was raised in the Catholic Church, so naturally, I thought the Nicene Creed was our creed. It’s not! The word “catholic” has nothing to do with the denomination. It means “according to the whole.” In other words, we are all catholic. To be catholic is to be a sign of unity — a unity … that is not “over and against” anything, but always “with and for” everything. We are a unifying presence in the world, torn apart by division.

Apostolic: Because we are “apostolic,” we send. The word “apostle” comes from the Greek word apóstolos, whose root is stéllo, “I send.” The Latin equivalent is missio, from which we get “mission.” We are sent ones. An apostolic church is sent into the world as a sign of God’s love made visible.

Our cities and their most vulnerable eagerly await a new humanity poured out in the shape of one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.

Fifteen interns from throughout the country are participating in the eight-week program, designed to “train Christ’s followers in skilled servant work” (Ephesians 4:12, The Message). Northland is privileged to host such an amazing and diverse group of individuals!

GARRETT ROMINE INTERNSHIP: Worship SCHOOL: University of Mobile CLASSIFICATION: Junior MAJOR: Worship Leadership HOMETOWN: Mobile, Ala. DREAM JOB: Traveling musician I’m interning at Northland this summer because I know I will spend my summer doing something that will challenge me at my craft. I know we will have a blast and it will be a summer for the books!

MILENA KACER INTERNSHIP: Student Ministries SCHOOL: University of Florida CLASSIFICATION: Senior MAJOR: Family, youth and community sciences HOMETOWN: Crystal River WEIRDEST PLACE I’VE EVER PRAYED: In a storage closet in Mexico I’m interning at Northland this summer because I love working with students. I was heavily impacted by the interns who worked at my church when I was in middle and high school, and that created a desire in my heart to be an intern for students.

SETH PEACOCK INTERNSHIP: Audio tech SCHOOL: University of Mobile CLASSIFICATION: Senior MAJOR: Worship leadership — music business HOMETOWN: Gardendale, Ala. FAVORITE LATE-NIGHT STUDY FOOD: Honey butter chicken biscuit I’m interning at Northland because it has a reputation for being technically excellent, yet what people say about Northland is that the people there put the focus on Christ.

I hope to learn what it takes to establish a culture where excellence is a product of striving toward Christ.

CAITIE KIESSER INTERNSHIP: Social justice SCHOOL: Hope College CLASSIFICATION: Sophomore MAJOR: Social work HOMETOWN: Bellevue, Neb. PERSON MOST LIKE TO MEET ON EARTH: Julie Andrews I’m interning at Northland this summer because it will be an incredible opportunity to further my spiritual, professional and relational growth, as well as continue to share the love of Christ.

MARY PADGETT INTERNSHIP: Worship SCHOOL: University of Mobile CLASSIFICATION: Sophomore MAJOR: Worship leadership — church ministries HOMETOWN: Birmingham, Ala. PERSON MOST LIKE TO MEET IN HEAVEN: Peter I’m interning at Northland this summer because I know the Lord is moving in and through Northland, and I am excited about the opportunity to be invested in as a young worship leader by people who genuinely desire to see His name glorified.

I’m interning at Northland to help others in their walk with Christ and to strengthen my relationship with Him. Also, I hope to grow stronger as a leader. But the main reason is I want to see what God has in store for me, the other interns and Northland as a whole throughout the summer.

Building Strong Families

mong the Northlanders who serve in ministries of various capacities in Orlando and around the world, Northland supports 74 missionaries who serve in a variety of places and roles. Bible translation, church planting and evangelism, home office logistics and student ministry are just a few of the areas of expertise of our missionaries.

Because many ministry home offices are located in the Orlando area, we are privileged to support some of their workers who live and work here. Others are spread out over the continents. Whether they are here or abroad, please support these missionaries through your prayers and encouragement.

Aileen Agoncillo Wycliffe Bible Translators — Associate director of church partnerships, Asia liaison She connects churches with Bible translation and unreached people groups while capturing and sharing stories about God’s work in Asian churches.

Scott and Tiffany Kelley The Refuge — Executive director They minister to and disciple refugees arriving in Georgia through family resettlement, and provide youth and marriage training and mentoring.

Joe and Peggy Dunn Reliant — Managing director of Great Commission Europe (GCE) They equip and lead churches and missionaries across Europe through visits, training seminars and recruiting shortterm support teams.

Elaine Kemp Cru — Field staff member She reaches Orlando by building missional communities through community engagement.

Mark and Jana Faus Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) — CEO of CEML Hospital They serve the sick and wounded of Lubango, Uganda, and beyond, caring for physical needs while introducing patients to the greatest Healer.

Attend the When Helping Hurts Seminar Learn how to alleviate poverty without hurting the poor ... and yourself.

I

f you’ve been coming to Northland lately, you’ve no doubt heard about When Helping Hurts. You may be asking yourself, What does that mean, practically speaking?

How can we serve others in a way that honors God while preserving the dignity of both parties? One way is to respond with a hierarchy of questions, such as: 1. What are you going to do to help yourself?

This starts the empowering process.

2. What are the people in your life (family and friends) going to do to help you?

This opens the door to speak about community.

3. What can we do together to help you?

This could be your opportunity to help that person see his or her worth, that dignity is a gift that is already theirs!

Follow up with such questions as these: “What do people say you’re good at? What do you enjoy doing? What would you like to learn?

4. What can I do?

Don’t be afraid to linger on the first and second questions. God desires for us and the other person to feel the discomfort long enough for each of us to lean into Him more.

Remember, God is the One who reconciles; we are the ambassadors. Also remember, there can be a temptation to value effectiveness (quick solutions). There isn’t a quick fix to any broken relationship of system.

The goal of human transformation toward empowerment is to discover our true identity — we are made in God’s image and bear His gifts, talents and treasures — and vocation for our lives. In the end, meaning matters more than efficiency.

If you are looking for more practical hands-on training like this, join us for the one-day seminar, where you’ll learn the biblically based approach to poverty alleviation and how you can walk with people who are poor in ways that lead to lasting change.

During this time, you will learn how to effectively help people in need, moving beyond good intentions to lasting change. The seminar will be held Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Register at northlandchurch.net/calendar.

Marylee McCaffrey Joins CARE Center Team

L

ifeHope Childcare Center is pleased to introduce Marylee McCaffrey as the lead teacher in the toddler cottage. Marylee is the mother of three amazing kids: Ryan, 14, and twins Adam and Meghan, 12. They started attending Northland in 2015 after moving closer to Longwood. She is excited to provide a Christ-centered, nurturing and creative environment for her students.

Marylee majored in communications at Palm Beach Atlantic University. She was able to be a stay-at-home mom for many years, but also taught a preschool music and movement class at a local church when her children were younger. Then she gained employment with Hunter Vision, working as a surgery counselor and a member of its community outreach team for four years. Working at Hunter Vision, a faith-based organization, strengthened her personal walk as a Christian, which ultimately led her to work in ministry full time.

Up for a challenge? Try attending a weekend service at Northland where you don’t hear “relationship,” “being in community” or “connecting with others.”

You’ll be hard-pressed!

T

hese words come up virtually every time we gather, and they aren’t just buzzwords to us. We’ve hitched our wagon to the belief that following Jesus together isn’t just a great idea; it’s vital to truly experiencing the life and mission God has in mind for each of us. And when we look deep inside, it’s what most of us really long to experience. (Note: You can blame this one on God. It’s how He’s wired us — with a longing for community!)

However, for many of us, particularly those newer in the journey here at Northland, getting to know others can be a challenge. Not only does it require building up the courage to branch out, but, as you may have noticed, this place is big! To help break through those challenges, we’re working to create some environments where fun and connection can take place more naturally. And we’re off to a great start!

On May 1, we hosted a Fun Field Day out by Northland’s new soccer field — and a great crowd turned out! We chose not to structure the gathering, but only to provide the space and let the 350-plus people who showed up shape the afternoon. In no time, people were enjoying soccer, Wiffle ball, cornhole and kickball games, and several footballs and Frisbees were flying around. Oh, and people played some serious double Dutch.

Most importantly, lots of great conversations and new connections were taking place. In fact, the question we got asked most frequently is, “When are we doing this again?”

What a hit! So we’ve scheduled the next Fun Field Day for Sunday afternoon, June 26 — this time with a water theme for the kids!

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them.

True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:1939; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have seven grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke, Lena, and Ava (2004-2010).

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
