Luke 10:25-37

The Good Samaritan We encourage you to get together with a friend or two and do this study. We can understand more of God and better arrange our lives around God’s Word when we pursue Him together. The scene of this story is a public debate between a lawyer and Jesus. The lawyer is trying to get Jesus to stumble into some heresy, and Jesus responds by widening the narrow constraints of the debate. Jesus tends to do that. Love doesn’t fit well in categories. In the story itself, Jesus introduces a unique collection of characters to create tension and prove his wider point that love knows no boundaries. He first introduces us to a man who has been beaten and left on the side of the road to die. We aren’t told much about him, but we can assume from the context that it is a Jewish man. Then we learn about two more Jewish men: a priest and a Levite. These men are temple officials who wouldn’t want to touch a corpse and dirty their hands, so to speak, making them unfit for their service. Finally we meet a Samaritan, who would be a hated rival of the wounded Jewish man.

Welcome

Hear God’s Story READ LUKE 10:25-37 Read the passage together, and discuss the following questions, paying particular attention to the context and author’s intent. • The Samaritan had to sacrifice quite a bit to care for this wounded man. What did it cost him?

• The lawyer asks, “Who is my neighbor?” in verse 29, but Jesus adjusts the question in verse 36. What is the difference between the question asked in verse 29 and the questions Jesus asks in verse 36?

Let’s worship God together!

Align Your Story With God’s Story

Our website has hundreds of archived worship services, stories about the great work God is doing and ways for YOU to be the church everywhere, every day. NorthlandChurch.net

Now talk about how you will apply the wisdom you’ve obtained from the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned. • What excuses do you think the priest and Levite probably used for not helping? Do you ever find yourself using the same excuses?

• Whom are you walking by every day without extending love? Don’t only think literally on this one. Think also about the people whom we tend to want to keep on the other side of our safe boundaries for who is “in” and who is “out.”

• The first question the lawyer asked Jesus was a typical rabbinic question: “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” How would you answer that question?
