STRONGHOLD OF LUST, PART 2 A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR
(Read about Northland’s senior pastor, Dr. Hunter, and his life in ministry at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter.)
Matthew 5:27-28 (NASB) “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
Worship Focus Worship Christ today as the Light of the world. He is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. He who has called us into the Light will bring to light all that is hidden.
Shopping, bargain-hunting, materialism, gambling, pornography, lust ... Are you affected by any of these strongholds in your life?
Are any of these strongholds affecting a particular relationship in your life? Later in service, you will have an opportunity to light a candle out of love for the person in that relationship. As you light it, pray that Jesus will bring healing to your relationship.
NOTES
This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him. If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth—we’re not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin. If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the TALK ABOUT IT: • Read 1 Corinthians 6:18-20. How do these verses motivate you to keep your heart, mind and body pure? • Because all sin starts in our hearts and minds, it is especially important that we guard them. One way to keep your mind pure is to fill it with things that are wholesome. Read Philippians 4:8. How does this list compare with the things that bombard your mind daily and the typical topics of conversation among your friends? • How could you change those intentionally, to think more about wholesome things? • How is your choice of friends critical to keeping your mind pure?
other hand, if we admit our sins—make a clean breast of them—he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. (1 John 1:5-9, The Message, emphasis added)

Things You Should Know About Northland
So far this year, Northlanders have put in more than 2,895 volunteer hours in the community. “We are on track to exceed our total volunteer hours for last year by approximately 1,000 hours and will likely do more than that!” says Dana Kobosky, Northland’s director of local service. Many opportunities to serve are listed on the church’s website, including Local Serve Days. Hundreds of people come out for this quarterly event, which is coming up July 16. Learn more at northlandchurch.net/serve.
P
We want to be a catalyst to help start 1 million churches worldwide. According to Dr. Dan “Coach” Lacich, Northland’s pastor for distributed sites, most of these churches will not be affiliated with Northland. Instead, we want to come alongside them, assisting them with technology and ministry training. “We’re already doing this in Africa, China, India and the Middle East,” he explains. “Being in partnership means we don’t care about getting credit or expanding our organization. Rather, we focus on what we can do together to reach an audacious goal for God’s glory.” We have 31 teams going out to serve in other countries in 2011. These teams serve in a variety of ways, including ministering to orphans and widows in Ukraine, building chapels in the Dominican Republic, working on a community center in Cuba, and planting house churches in Zambia. “This is an opportunity to build relationships and to build the Kingdom ... to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” explains Patti Harshey, Northland’s administrator of Distributed Journeys, who also lends her alto vocal talents during weekend worship. “People who go on these Distributed Journeys get an opportunity to see that God is at work everywhere, not just here in the U.S.” Learn more at somedayistoday.net. Northland’s LifeHope benevolence team recently “adopted” 15 homeless families in Seminole County—a growing problem that was highlighted recently by “60 Minutes.” Each year LifeHope helps hundreds of people in need. LifeHope assisted 364 families last year alone. Rachel Ballantyne, director of LifeHope, adds: “Our desire is to empower people to live the life God has for them and guide them toward next steps that will help them do exactly that.” Learn more at northlandchurch.net/ministries/lifehope.
Our mobile kitchen rolls out during national emergencies and can feed up to 30,000 people per day. Northland’s Disaster Response Team was initiated in 2007 after Hurricane Katrina and was recently mobilized after the devastating tornadoes that swept through Alabama. The team assists with everything from providing medical and emotional care, to distributing food, to setting up temporary pet shelters. More than 500 Northlanders have been trained as emergency responders, and many more are needed, says Gretchen Kerr, director of the church’s Life Crossroads ministries. “What if what happened in Alabama happened here? We need to be prepared. Moreover, serving others is what Jesus commanded us to do. We’re supposed to get our hands dirty and help out when things get messy. Northland’s online missionaries responded to 76,189 people last year who had either made a first-time decision for Christ, rededicated their lives to Him, or asked for more information on following Jesus. Global Media Outreach (GMO), one of Northland’s partner ministries, has created dozens of sites—the modern-day equivalent of Gospel tracts—in every major language on a wide variety of topics, from TalesofNarnia.com to GodLovesMarines. com to WhoIsJesus-Really.com. Pastor Dan Lacich says: “The Distributed Church is not about getting people and resources closer to your ministry; it is about getting your ministry and resources closer to people. An Internet-based ministry like GMO allows us to do that in ways never before dreamed possible.” Learn more at northlandchurch.net/ministries/ global_media_outreach. We have transitional programs for men and women getting out of jail. “It begins by building trust and developing relationships with the inmates while they are still incarcerated through the weekly mentoring classes,” Gretchen Kerr explains. “Upon release, they are invited to join a program known as Nehemiah for men and Esther for women. This step begins the transitioning process as well as the healing.” This is in addition to the worship webstreamed into John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Seminole County and the Orange County correctional facility in Orlando, along with Celebrate Recovery and aftercare programs. Last year the bookstore sold more than 1,100 Bibles and gave away hundreds more to those in the congregation, visitors and inmates. Donna Duckhorn, our bookstore manager, adds: “We also help schools, ministries and other churches to get their resources at the best price possible. So we’re supporting ministry that happens outside of Northland, too.”

R
ecently, Dr. Hunter and I spent time with our church partner in Brazil, The Presbyterian Church of Manaus. The city of Manaus sits near the confluence of the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers. For years the church has had a ministry of sending large boats up and down the rivers to do outreach in small villages. The ministry includes providing medical and dental care, food, clothing and education, and sharing the gospel. As people come to faith in Christ in these small villages, a church starts and a person from the village is trained to lead the church in his or her home village. It is a ministry that looks and feels a great deal like what Paul did in the book of Acts. People took the gospel from place to place, serving, healing and preaching. When people came to Christ in that new town, they would train leaders and then move on to the next town. During our time in Manaus, we were blessed with the opportunity to help train some of these local leaders. They traveled many miles to get to the training. Some paddled in canoes for hours to get to a motorboat to get them to a bigger boat to eventually take them to a bus. The dedication of these leaders was humbling to behold. Once they arrived at the training Dr. Hunter helped train center, they soaked up many while in Manaus. everything we gave them. These leaders understood they were being equipped to go back to their village and pass on to others the things they were learning. Many people from Northland have gone on Distributed Journeys to Brazil. They have traveled up and down the

rivers on boats, taking the gospel to the people of the villages. It is wonderful to realize that some Northlanders have shared the gospel with people who are now leaders in their little village Elder Felipe Santos (second from church, and we left) and Dr. Dan Lacich (second had the privilege of from right) with new friends. giving them further training in ministry. In addition, Northland has been a major partner in the funding of the boats, making it possible for the gospel to be preached and demonstrated through ministries of service. The spread of the gospel is not limited to the rivers and the boats. As a result of our time in Manaus, the church there will begin to stream its services live on the Internet, just as we do. In September, two of our technicians will travel to Manaus, bringing along some equipment, to work alongside techs from the church. As a result, a live evangelical worship service and preaching will be made available around the world in Portuguese. This is all part of our vision to have at least one such church doing webstream worship in each of the 20 largest languages in the world by 2020. We already have helped churches speaking Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, Ukrainian and Afrikaans to webstream. You need to know that your giving toward service at Northland is making a huge impact all over the world. Manaus and the Amazon River system is just one of those places. Continue to pray for the ministry there, that those leaders will be further equipped to preach the Word and advance the Kingdom of God here on earth.

MEET THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. Inspired to Serve By Dana Kobosky
O
ver the past few weeks, I have followed the journey I was particularly struck by one team member, who said: and experiences of Northland’s Disaster Relief Team “It is so obvious to me that the Lord gives each of us our while in Alabama. As I read through related blogs, I own special gifts, and combined we do make the body of found stories of survival and glimmers of hope in the midst Christ. I know sometimes we have the tendency to feel I was excited to see the same mobile kitchen and team members that have served hundreds of Northland volunteers breakfast at our Local Serve Days now helping to lighten the burden of those in crisis by providing warm meals and a smile. I thought to myself, They were willing to serve at a moment’s notice! Disaster struck, and they just jumped right in there and got it done! But then I remembered that they didn’t just do this on a whim; they have trained for this all along. Now, it’s not that I am unimpressed with the fact that they dropped everything and rushed to serve those in need. At April’s Local Serve Day, Northlanders filled up with a healthy breakfast before I am absolutely impressed heading out to serve in the community. with their dedication and willingness to sacrifice in that regard! About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Vision Statement
To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
Mission Statement
To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
What is a “church distributed”? Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities. If you wish to learn more about the church distributed, you may purchase the book Church Distributed, by Dr. Joel C. Hunter, at the Northland Bookstore or Amazon.com. All proceeds go to Northland.

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
northlandchurch.net
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
