Resource Well Equips Ministry Leaders Worldwide I

t’s a new day for people around the world using the Northland children’s God in His extravagant and faithful provision of the resources we need, curriculum. Team Shares Supplies, Christ’s Love in Egypt BY BETSY DASSE

gypt is the land of pyramids, pharaohs and, more recently, the attention of the international media. It is the land where Jesus lived as a child when God directed Joseph to take his family there for safety. Cairo, Egypt, is where our five-member team—Devon Lang, Fernando Pedraza, Jami Wray, Kevin Wray, and I—headed April 14 to work with a long-term team providing care and compassion to those in need. We were overflowing with excitement, so very grateful for our families and friends who supported us in this Distributed Journey, and thankful that God had called us to participate in this mission trip. Since the revolution in Egypt, which began in January 2011, many people have been reluctant to travel to Egypt. Were the five members of our team worried about our safety? The answer is a resounding no! Our team felt secure about serving in Egypt for several reasons. First and foremost, we knew that God was in control and directing us; the level of peace that comes with that is priceless. Second, the leadership at Northland was closely monitoring events in Egypt related to our safety. Finally, throughout our time in Egypt, we were accompanied by a team from our partner church, which considered our safety a high priority. We were privileged to serve with the Healing Grace ministry in Upper Egypt. Healing Grace focuses on the transformation of villages by identifying needy families, providing them with food, medical care and encouragement, and helping to teach them about the love of Christ. A child sponsorship ministry helps to make it possible for the Healing Grace team to achieve the goals of its ministry.

The children enjoy our songs and stories.

The 12 full-time staff members of Healing Grace visit these families every week and work with the village churches. They sponsor clubs, provide retreats for the children, and ensure that the children attend school and get the supplies they need, along with tutoring as necessary. This ministry also provides special sessions for women and has established preschools in seven villages. Our team made 60 visits to Christian homes, taking them needed articles, talking with them through interpreters, praying with them, and being Christ’s light as we loved on them with smiles, conversations and hugs. Their homes are simple. Many have packed dirt floors and sparse furnishings, and often they are shared with animals, including chickens, goats and cows. We were warmly welcomed into each home and felt so blessed to be with these beautiful, gracious, godly people. We had the opportunity to visit the preschools in two villages. That was so much fun. At one school, the children sang two songs for us in English! Although these preschoolers are not fluent in conversational English, they clearly understood that their words praised the Lord. They bowed their heads and folded their hands in prayer as they gave thanks to the Lord for their noon meal. We also helped out during a two-day retreat for 75 children. Although we wouldn’t win any Grammy Awards or Oscar nominations, we sang them songs, such as “Our God Is So Big”; presented a skit about Joseph, which emphasized love, forgiveness and trust in God in all situations; and presented a segment on basic hygiene. Through generous donations from our families, friends and team members, we were able to give the children school supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste and bandages to share with their families. Our team members were blessed in so many ways. We spanned three generations in age. Except for Jami and

Kevin, who are married, we did not know one another before our pre-trip team meetings. Our bonds began to form slowly and became incredibly strong throughout our time in Egypt, resulting in what I’m certain will be lifelong friendships based on our mutual love of the Lord and desire to serve in His holy name through this Distributed Journey. Many Northland mercy ministry team members from this and other years felt led to sponsor Egyptian children through the Healing Grace ministry. We had the special blessing of meeting our children. In many cases, we also have had the privilege of meeting their families and visiting them in their homes. Taha, a village where our mercy ministry teams have served since 2009, is very close to our hearts. We pray that more members of Northland will consider sponsoring children through this program. hy should we serve others? Well, there are as many different reasons as there are ways to serve! For example, a recent survey that United Healthcare conducted indicated that people who volunteer are more likely to rate their overall satisfaction with their lives as “very good” than are those who don’t volunteer. Furthermore, people who volunteer overwhelmingly agreed that serving others enriched their “sense of purpose in life.” In addition, people who serve others agreed that volunteering “makes me feel physically healthier” and “lowers my stress level.” Who doesn’t want to feel healthier and less stressed? While serving others can help you feel better, might lower stress and can leave you feeling good about doing something for someone else, there are far more compelling reasons why we, as Christians, should serve others. Ultimately, our service isn’t about how it makes us feel or what we can get out of it. In fact, it’s not about us at all. Instead, it is all about God, bringing His Kingdom here on earth and responding to Him. Our service is far bigger

than we are! It is part of building His Kingdom, part of our response to God and very much a part of our worship. If you have spent any time at Northland, you know we talk a lot about being the church, everywhere, every day. Serving in the local community is a tangible way of demonstrating God’s love for those around us, and one of the most practical ways to be the church. For many people, seeing someone give of himself or herself in order to help them may be the first time they see and experience Christ’s love for them. Our willingness to serve speaks volumes to those around us about who God is and what He has done in our lives. While I’m certainly not opposed to lowering stress or feeling better, serving others can be so much more if you choose. So go serve someone, somewhere this week, knowing that your simple act of service goes far beyond anything you can imagine. Find someone in your neighborhood or at work who could use a hand, serve with a local organization, or sign up for one of our local projects at serve.northlandchurch.net. When you are serving, remember that it is about so much more than how it makes you feel. It’s about sharing Christ with others. It’s about worship. It’s about building His Kingdom. Now those are compelling reasons to serve!

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven. What is a “church distributed”?

Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.
