Luke 15:1-7

The Lost Sheep Find others to do this study with you — friends, family members or coworkers — or join an existing group. You will understand more of God and better arrange your life around God’s Word as you pursue Him with others. This week we are going to focus on the parable of the lost sheep. In his commentary on Luke, N.T. Wright gives valuable insight into the context for this story: “In the stories of the sheep and the coin, the punch line in each case depends on the Jewish belief that the two halves of God’s creation, heaven and earth, were meant to fit together and be in harmony with each other. If you discover what’s going on in heaven, you’ll discover how things were meant to be on earth. That, after all, is the point of praying that God’s kingdom will come ‘on earth as in heaven’. As far as the legal experts and Pharisees were concerned, the closest you could get to heaven was in the Temple; the Temple required strict purity from the priests; and the closest that non-priests could get to copying heaven was to maintain a similarly strict purity in every aspect of life. But now Jesus was declaring that heaven was having a great, noisy party every time a single sinner saw the light and began to follow God’s way. If earth-dwellers wanted to copy the life of heaven, they’d have a party, too. That’s what Jesus was doing.” As you focus on this parable together, consider what Jesus was teaching us about His Kingdom.

Share Your Story Scripture says that no one seeks God (Romans 3:11). He came for us and pursues us. If you are a believer, think about how you came to Christ. Looking back, how can you see Him drawing you? Whom did He use in your life to show His love to you?

Welcome

Hear God’s Story READ LUKE 15:1-7 Read the passage together, and discuss the following questions, paying particular attention to the context and author’s intent. • Picture the scene in which Jesus shared this parable. The sinners and tax collectors seem to be lined up on one side, and the scribes and Pharisees on the other, reminiscent of a showdown. The New International Version says the Pharisees “muttered.” Why would it be an affront to them for Jesus to welcome tax collectors and sinners? Who are the sinners outside the acceptable boundaries that you don’t think Jesus should be hanging out with? • In the parable, the finding of the sheep results in a shared celebration with friends and neighbors. When Jesus explains the parable, what does He say is the source of the celebration? How does this parable take the view of God’s welcoming sinners to a whole new level? • There is an interesting phrase in verse 7, “who need no repentance” (NASB). That could be interpreted as someone who keeps the law perfectly and doesn’t need to repent, or it could be interpreted as someone who is so religious he doesn’t realize he needs repentance. Based on the context, which do you think is correct?

Let’s worship God together!

Find Your Story in God’s Story Now talk about how you will apply the wisdom you’ve obtained from the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned. • If you had been present for the original telling of this story, which side would you have been on? Based on that, what does this parable teach you about your relationship with God? To whom do you need to extend God’s love and grace this week? • What does it say to you about God that He is willing to leave the 99 to rescue the one? How have you experienced the extent of God’s love for you? What will you do with this new understanding of how much He cares about the lost? • How do you relate to the Pharisees in this parable? Whom have you been unwilling to welcome or pursue? Ask God to show you what you could do this week to show them God’s love and grace.

WORSHIP FOCUS Worship Christ today as the One who brought the Kingdom to earth. He put it within our grasp and gave us understanding. He will use us to shape His Kingdom and shape us as we seek others.

QUOTE Jesus inverts the sacrificial logic and stands with the one. He recovers the excluded one in a way that unifies the whole flock. This is cause for a great celebration. Gospel logic sees the whole flock in its entirety. There are no good sheep or bad sheep; there are just sheep. They are the same. There are 100 of them, and they belong together. If we follow gospel logic to its Spirit-filled conclusion, then the good shepherd does not leave the 99 at all. He invites them to join the effort to include the excluded one. The 99 are invited to joyfully celebrate what they were so blindly ready to sacrifice for their own survival. The lost sheep is now seen, not as a scapegoat but as a vital member of the flock. Of course, this kind of celebration demands a radical conversion by both the 99 and the one.

So He told them this parable, saying, “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

Worship in the Arts Camp

T

his June, 140 grade school and middle school students will participate in Worship in the Arts Camp at Northland at Longwood. The camp provides an encouraging environment for one week of instruction in the disciplines of music, dance, acting, visual arts, technical production and spiritual growth. Instruction and mentoring will be provided by professional artists within the Northland community, working alongside the True North interns. The goal of the camp is to encourage young artists to grow in their faith and in developing their gifts. In keeping with Northland’s mission of equipping young artists for a lifetime of worship, the week will culminate in an evening of celebration for families in our community. Families and individuals of all ages are invited to join us Friday, June 23 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Performed by our young artists from Northland’s Worship in the Arts Camp, “Let Us Pray” is a brief concert celebrating the Lord’s Prayer through elements of dance, music and visual arts. After the performance, everyone is invited to view the Young Artists Art Gallery. Questions? Contact Bethany Durys at 407-937-0541 or bethany.durys@northlandchurch.net.

Uganda, Ukraine, US Unite! BY OLIVIA B., GLOBAL MISSIONS DEPARTMENT

In March, Uganda, Ukraine and the United States were united for a week in a unique way. Some Northlanders joined with two Ukrainian partners from New Life Church to work with and learn from Pastor Robert Nabulere and his team in Uganda. Marc McMurrin shares reflections about their time together, and David Saphirstein shares photos of their experience.

Northlanders united with Ugandan and Ukrainian partners to support the work in Uganda! Pictured left to right: Pastor Gus Davies (Northland), David Saphirstein (Northland), Jordan Gritter (Northland), Oleg Magdych (Ukraine), Marc McMurrin (Northland), Victor Larionov (Ukraine) and Robert Nabulere (Uganda)

T

he network of pastors in Uganda is inspiring and contagious. They are planting small church communities in schools, villages, shops, homes and even police stations. The pastors connect with a small community of people, share the gospel and establish a church among the people without the need for a centralized building (although they have those too). These church communities naturally care for the communities they are already imbedded with in the slums, cities, villages or marketplace. The larger churches take on larger needs, such as starting schools for children who have no access to education, and bring those families into the church community. Northland is so blessed to have a partner in Pastor Robert Nabulere, the country director for church planting and development. It is indigenous leaders such as him and his network who put the gospel into action to establish the church, care for the poor and transform communities.

Many pastors throughout our network of partner churches feel strongly about the church reaching out to and empowering orphans and children, hoping to raise up a new generation on fire for God!

Partner churches in Kampala work closely with local jails and police stations and have formed close friendships with local police officers, even hosting Bible studies with them.

Join us in praising God for blessing us with such dynamic and life-giving relationships! * There are partner churches not highlighted on this map for their safety. Pray for the persecuted church.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Please pray: • Praise God for the safe passage of a missionary couple going to the field in the Middle East. They have a baby and so far have been settling in well! • Pray for missionaries Gil and Michika Cauthorn. Their church was able to buy its own building, but they are raising funds for it. The building provides the ministry 24/7 accessibility to serve the community. Pray that they are able to raise the funds!

Seeing God Through Serving BY JANIE RAY

W

hen my husband, Ray, and I joined the Disaster Response team a couple of years ago, it was more about satisfying a need we had to serve others through a ministry that challenged and stretched us. Little did we know the entire cadre of benefits and blessings that awaited us. Joanna Neff, Janie Ray and Last September we were Dan Ray called to assist the township of French Settlement, Louisiana, a small community of approximately 850 citizens, people living along the river that had been severely impacted with no warning by storms and raging floods that destroyed homes and personal property and disrupted lives that are still in the process of recovering and being rebuilt. Community Resource Network Blessed Me BY CHARLES PITTS

Three years ago my wife left to go to work and never came home. At 8 a.m. the next day, her office manager called and said, “Mr. Pitts, your wife has sold her practice and gone home to Thailand.” I could not believe what I was hearing. We had been married for 27 years, and the number of disagreements we had over that time period you could count on one hand. I was heartbroken and filled with grief. I begged God all day to help bring my wife home, but she never returned. After a week of prayer and no answers from God, my heart began to grow hard toward God. une 1 marks the start of hurricane season, and the time to prepare is now, before the storm hits. The United States has not experienced a major hurricane since Wilma in 2005. What you need to do: • Know your risk and evacuation plans. • Build or restock your basic disaster supply kit. • Make a family plan. • Don’t forget to make a plan for your pets. • Visit Ready.gov for more details.

• Interfaith Discussion Wednesday, June 14, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Adventist University of Health Sciences, Florida Hospital, 671 Winyah Drive, Orlando. Topic: “Does Your Faith Believe in Religious Liberty?” Most faith traditions believe in religious liberty — as long as we’re talking about religious liberty for them, that is. Faiths haven’t always been so sure about how much religious liberty should be granted to those of other faiths. And those of no faith may really miss out when it comes to “religious” liberty. But maybe we should ask first, just what is religious liberty? Are civil rights and religious liberty the same? Are they mutually exclusive at times? Does my religious liberty ever/ always trump someone else’s civil rights? Is the “Johnson Amendment” — which President Trump has vowed to repeal — an imposition on religious liberty? Has the tern “religious liberty” meant the same thing throughout our nation’s history? Come prepared to discuss these questions and more. Join the respectful, open and candid discussion, sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Central Florida and Adventist University of Health Sciences. The participants represent a variety of faith traditions as well as those who question the validity of faith altogether. Admission is free. Everyone is invited. • “Friends Talking Faith” Tuesdays, 6:30 to 7 p.m., 90.7-FM radio. The “Three Wise Guys” (Rabbi Steven Engel, Rev. 15 NORTHLAND, A CHURCH DISTRIBUTED | northlandchurch.net/about

What We Believe THE BIBLE — We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16) GOD —

The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

THE MEANS OF SALVATION — We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:6-7; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

SECURITY, ASSURANCE AND RESPONSIBILITY — We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

MAN — We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

THE CHURCH — We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2) THE CHRISTIAN’S WALK — We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

THE ETERNAL STATE — We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46) Find out more at northlandchurch.net/about.

Our Purpose: Why we are here. From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

Our Vision: What we see. A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

Our Mission: What we do. At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together:

Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you. We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

Pastor’s Bio During Dr. Hunter’s tenure, which began in 1985, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a Floridabased congregation of 20,000 that worships worldwide via the web. Before accepting the pastorate at Northland, he served as a United Methodist minister for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. Becky is the former president of the Global Pastors Wives Network and is the author of “Being Good to Your Husband On Purpose” (Creation House). The Hunters raised three sons and have seven grandchildren. Learn more about Pastor Hunter’s life in ministry at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives. All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
