A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR JEFF BELL (Read about Pastor Jeff at northlandchurch.net/team/jeff_bell.)
Walk This Way: Life in the Way of Jesus 1 John 2:3-6 (NIV) We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
Worship Focus
Worship Christ today as the transforming Light that shined in the darkness. He, the Father of lights, invaded the darkness of this world as He invades the darkness in our hearts and lives. Daily Reading Day 1: John 1:1-5, 14 (NIV) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. … “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” From the very first words of His Gospel, John uses compelling imagery to describe Christ – the Word, the light and the life. Which ones are most meaningful to you in your relationship with Jesus? How have you come to a place of “understanding” the light (John 1:5)? What does it mean to you that Jesus is “the Word”? Day 2: John 3:16-21 (NIV) “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” Perhaps John first heard the metaphor of darkness and light from Jesus’ teachings, as in this well-known passage. How is this an apt metaphor for your spiritual awakening and your spiritual journey? Notice the connection Jesus makes here between the way we live and the light we have.
For what situation in your life right now could this connection be illuminating? Where are you being called to live by the truth you have been given?
Day 4: 1 John 1:1-7 (NIV) “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched — this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete. “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” Again in this epistle, John begins with the same imagery used in his Gospel – the Word, the life and the light. But here he emphasizes the fact that he was an eyewitness to Jesus Himself. If you were to write of your firsthand experience with Jesus, what would you want to be sure to tell about? Would you compare His light in your life to a candle, a flashlight, or a floodlight? Where are you asking Him to illuminate your way today? Where is He calling you to walk in the light you have already been given? Day 5: 1 John 2:8-11 (NIV) “Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother or sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.” According to this passage, what is the litmus test for whether or not we know Jesus? How does it change our lives? Like light itself, Christ’s presence in our lives can be seen. We cannot hide it. How evident is His light in your life? If the light of Christ is fading in your life, what action can you take? How could you let His Word reignite your heart?
Day 3: John 17:6-17 (NIV) “‘I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. ‘I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.’” In this passage, Jesus is praying for His followers, shortly before His crucifixion. What had Jesus been sure to give them? These followers did not have the Scriptures that we have, or the Spirit of Christ as we experience it. What does having the Word of God mean to you personally? How vital is it to your spiritual health? How could you better take advantage of the opportunity to have His Word illuminate your life?

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Man
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)
OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.
OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE
A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.
OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO
At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.
We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Prayer is something deeper than words. It is present in the soul before it has been formulated into words. And it abides in the soul after the last words of prayer have passed over our lips.
Prayer is an attitude of our hearts, an attitude of mind. Prayer is a definite attitude of
our hearts toward God, an attitude which He in heaven immediately recognizes as prayer, as an appeal to His heart. Whether it takes the form of words or not, does not mean anything to God, only to ourselves.
– O. Hallesby (1879-1961), Prayer, London: InterVarsity Fellowship, 1943, reprint, Augsburg Fortress Books.

Touch Lives in Guatemala New partnership has big plans for inaugural trip. BY MARGIE MORRIS
P
artnering with Hope of Life International, this will be Northland and IsleGO Missions’ inaugural trip to Zacapa, Guatemala. Just think ... you can be part of the first team to begin building relationships with this new ministry partner! This trip will provide many exciting ways to serve others and touch lives ... in feeding centers, at orphanage Bible clubs and at other Bible clubs in the community. The trip also will include construction projects and ministry to the elderly and individuals with special needs, including a medical clinic and hospital for any medical professionals joining the team. There will even be opportunities to participate in baby rescues in the jungle. Tragically, babies whom parents no longer want or can’t care for are sometimes abandoned there. You do not need any special skills to take part in this mission. The only requirements: an open heart and a passion to serve others. Trip dates: October 18 to 25 Estimated cost: $1,725 to $1,925 (depending on airfare) Age requirement: All team members must be 18 years or older to participate, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. To sign up for this great mission journey, visit somedayistoday.net. Margie Morris at Margie@ guignardcompany.com or 407-234-8689

SERVE LOCALLY Poverty Simulation to Help J Meet Community Needs
Serving to Empower
T
he poverty simulation, set for Friday, August 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is a unique interactive experience that helps people begin to understand what life is like with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress. The simulation moves you to be more sensitive to the feelings and needs of those who are living in the crisis of poverty and in great need. In the simulation, participants assume the roles of up to 26 different families facing a variety of challenging, but typical, circumstances of a Central Floridian in need. Some are homeless, others have recently become unemployed, and some are suddenly faced with the responsibility of raising grandchildren. In addition, volunteers play the roles of resource providers, such as social workers, loan officers, employers, pawnbrokers, grocers, utility collectors, police officers and teachers. The program is conducted in a large room. Participants are seated in family clusters, and community resources are located at tables around the perimeter of the room. To start the simulation, each family is given a card explaining its unique situation, as well as a small amount of “money.” Then the families must secure food, shelter and other basic

alling all Northland Connectors, ministry leaders and congregants who serve at Northland! Mark your calendar for special training designed to equip us to serve to empower others well, Friday, July 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, July 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dignity Serves training is designed to experientially instruct us to serve others in a way that honors God, preserves the dignity of both parties, and fosters the type of interdependence that is characteristic of authentic and healthy relationships. Phil Hissom of the Polis Institute will deliver the training, based on biblical principles and research from the Central Florida community. The $10 cost includes materials and lunch Saturday. For more information, visit northlandchurch.net/calendar/ details/dignity_serves_training or contact Maria Penzes at maria.penzes@northlandchurch.net.
necessities by accessing the various resources during four 15-minute “weeks.” The whole activity lasts approximately four hours and includes an introduction and briefing by a facilitator, the simulation exercise, and a debriefing, in which participants and volunteers share what they have learned about living in poverty. The simulation leaves a lasting impression on participants and communities. The poverty simulation can mean different things to different participants. For resource providers, it can help them to better identify with the needs of their customers. For community leaders, it can help them to create and implement policies and programs that address the issue of poverty with more effectiveness. For students, it can help them to gain empathy and appreciation for the diverse world around them. For everyone, it can inspire a commitment to making a positive difference in the community. This is a ticketed event. To register, visit northlandchurch.net. Judy Head at judy.head@ northlandchurch.net
oin us and other Northlanders as we embark upon a new journey serving to empower others. Our CARE (Compassion and Reconciliation) Center’s team goal is to help restore people to a full expression of humanness, to being what God created us all to be, people created in the image of God with gifts, abilities and the capacity to make decisions and to effect change in the world around them, people who steward their lives, communities, resources and relationships to bring glory to God. Being “ambassadors of reconciliation” has major implications for how we choose, design, implement and evaluate our serve efforts. Part of this process will be to learn how to help others without hurting as well as how to serve others in a way that preserves the dignity of both parties. For more information, contact Maria Penzes at maria. penzes@northlandchurch.net.

MAKE A CONNECTION … CAMPUS: northlandchurch.net/volunteer
•
COMMUNITY: northlandchurch.net/neighbors
New Look, New Opportunities to Connect On-site, Beyond BY REBECCA LANG
Y
ou might have noticed that our page has a new look. That’s right! We’ve transitioned from the volunteer page to The Hub page. The reality is volunteer opportunities are just one of the many ways our weekend Hub hosts and weekday team members can help you connect. With that, we felt a change was in order to better represent all the ways there are for you to find your next step. Whether you want to serve in the community, volunteer on site, connect with your Northland neighbors, or find the right class or Bible study, The Hub is the place to help you do it. Speaking of new, we’re in another summer season, and there are lots of new opportunities to connect both here on-site and in your community. For example, we’re really excited about our upcoming summer cookouts. These cookouts are the next phase in our quarterly gatherings, where you can join Northlanders in your very own community for a time of food, fun and fellowship. By gathering with your Northland neighbors, our hope is you’ll meet new friends, allowing you to connect for the purpose of relationship-building and discipleship. If you weren’t able to make it to a Christmas or Easter gathering, don’t miss this opportunity; visit northlandchurch.net/ neighbors. Families all over Central Florida are hosting throughout July, and they’d love to meet you!
Of course, new opportunities to volunteer are continually popping up. We have our traditional needs, such as for Communion helpers, Children’s Ministries volunteers and greeters. But we also have such roles as kids safety patrols and “fifth wheels.” Check out these roles and more at northlandchurch.net/volunteer, or find them listed on this page. We hope you’ll visit us in The Hub. While volunteering and community connection are a large part of what we do, we’re passionate about connecting you to your next step, whatever it may be. Even if you’re not sure what your next step is, but you feel God calling you to move, stop by and chat with one of our Hub hosts. Grab some coffee, and share your story with us. We’d love to hear it!
Volunteer Needs: Be sure to check out some of our pressing needs. We’d love to help connect you! Give Jordan a call, or visit him in The Hub! Jordan at 407-949-7178 or jordan.gritter@northlandchurch.net Kids safety patrols: We take the safety of our children very seriously, and we’d love your help with this. We’re looking for volunteers to monitor our Children’s Worship Wing and Early Childhood Wing during weekend worship. James Li at james.li@northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1798 “Fifth wheels”: Volunteers are needed to bring elderly residents from the Longwood Health Care Center, right behind Northland. If you attend the 9 a.m. service, this is a great fit! A walkway connects Northland and the center; we just need people to be the “fifth wheel” and push these wonderful residents to the sanctuary. Patsy Grannan at pjgrannan@yahoo.com or 407-538-5209 Info kiosk hosts: Be available to answer questions, direct guests or simply show hospitality to our congregants before and after service at one of our info kiosks in the foyer. We’ll provide you with the training and resources you’ll need to assist our guests and congregants in an effective and meaningful way. Terry Wenner at infohosts@northlandchurch.net or 407-833-0360 Ushers: It can be hard to find the perfect seat right before and during the beginning of service. Help our congregation by serving as an usher during one of our services. Brittani Doss at brittani.doss@ northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1777 Greeters: Be a friendly face welcoming our congregation and guests arriving for weekend worship. Hand out worship guides, answer questions, and help make their experience a great one. Brittani Doss at brittani.doss@ northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1777

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have six grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke and Ava (2004-2010). Learn more about Pastor Hunter’s life in ministry at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. HOUSE CHURCHES Even though Northland is what could be called a “megachurch,” we are committed to helping others do church on as small a scale as a few people in a home. That means we want to bring resources and encouragement, and training for ministry to people where they live, and work and play. The house church allows that to happen anywhere in the world. Visit northlandchurch.net/housechurch for an introductory video from Dr. Hunter which will help you learn more about starting a house church. For more videos on how to build a simple church, so that you can effectively gather with others to transform your community, visit www. doingchurchsimply.com.
