A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR JEFF BELL (Read about Pastor Jeff at northlandchurch.net/team/jeff_bell.)

My Heart, Christ’s Home scripture focus: EPHESIANS 3:14-21 (NASB)

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. worship focus:

quote:

... Our relationship with Christ is not primarily a personal experience based on faithfully applying a few daily habits. It is not a daily, almost mystical enlightenment from a verse of scripture, which depends on our faithful 15-minute spurts of discipline. It is primarily a heart that is overwhelmed by comprehending what Christ has done and is doing, followed by the wise and disciplined conduct (habits) of our lives, which is based upon that revelation.

– Jeff Reed, Cultivating Habits of the Heart

Study the Scriptures READ THE PASSAGE: EPHESIANS 3:14-21

Think Through These Questions: 1. What exactly did Paul pray for the church at Ephesus? 2. What did he pray that they would comprehend, and what did he hope would result from this full comprehension? 3. In this context, what does it mean “that Christ may dwell in your hearts”? 4. What role do you think Paul saw prayer playing in seeing believers become rooted in their faith?

NORTHLAND LAKE COUNT

New Leader, New Building, New N

Have you heard the latest on what’s happening with our Mount Dora site? Hint: a lot! As Northland continues to transition in this new model of becoming a distributed church, our Mount Dora site is on the leading edge of being a true “church of churches.” But that’s only the beginning of what’s taking place. Read below as our new site pastor, Jeremy Bell, introduces himself and catches you up on what’s going on … including a new name and location. BY JEREMY BELL, NORTHLAND AT LAKE COUNTY PASTOR

I

t’s been quite a wild year! Since my wife and I moved to Mount Dora and joined the Northland staff team a little more than 12 months ago, we have seen God work in some amazing ways, and it has been an absolute privilege to have had a front-row seat! Consider just a FEW of the many highlights from the last year:

• Our congregation has transitioned into truly becoming a church of churches, a family of families that meets in homes all across the community in distributed churches. The Lake County Network now has more than a dozen distributed churches, with several more launching in the next few months. • We launched our new Ignite Student Ministry, which has grown from a handful of students to a contagious movement of junior high and high school students.

Ignite Student Ministries.

• We formed a strong, ongoing partnership with Triangle Elementary School as a local ministry focus, activating congregants with child mentorships, serve days and more. • We launched Celebrate Recovery for East Lake County, resulting in nearly 20 professions of faith. • Dozens of believers have followed Christ in baptism as a result of “First Principles” studies and outreach ministries, publicly affirming, “I’m with Him, and I’m with them.”

That is some seriously exciting stuff! Yet we believe that, as awesome as this year has been, God has even greater things in store for the next chapter .…

NTY HUB

Name … but Same Vision!

Worship team. New Leadership! As of July, I have officially stepped in as the new site pastor for Lake County, and I couldn’t be more excited! After serving in vocational ministry for the last 13 years in Indiana and New Jersey, my wife, Stephanie, and I feel that we have truly found our home here at Northland, and specifically in the Mount Dora area. We love, love, LOVE this amazing community of believers and are humbled to be able to serve with them. While Pastor Jeff will continue to serve our Lake Pastor Jeremy Bell and family. County congregation in a broad sense, it will be from a different seat as he transitions to serving the Northland congregation at large. As I’m sure you have noticed over the past few years, Jeff is an extremely gifted and visionary pastor, and there is no doubt in my mind that God will use him in amazing ways in his new role. I love my brother, and I love Northland, and I am convinced that he will prove to be an enormous blessing to the greater Northland family! New Building! While there is indeed so much happening all throughout the community, there is still a need for a central gathering place for worship and a hub for organizing and unleashing the church of churches in our community. God has graciously opened a door for a new facility to accomplish just that in Lake Hills Plaza, a beautiful and newly renovated commercial space on U.S. 19 and U.S. 441, centrally located right in the “golden triangle” of Mount Dora, Eustis and Tavares. This space is currently being updated, designed and formed into an exciting new worship venue and hub, and we are eagerly anticipating our first worship service in the new facility later this summer! New Name! As we are relocating to a new facility, it presents both the need and opportunity to alter the name of our site. Since the new facility is not located in Mount Dora, but rather in Lake Hills Plaza in Eustis, Northland at Mount Dora no longer seems appropriate.

Triangle Elementary service event. At the same time, there is an even greater reason to alter our name: mission. We believe that God is calling our site to grow into a movement of distributed churches all across Lake County, and in many ways, we are already seeing that happen! Same Vision Make no mistake about it, God is at work in Lake County! We are grateful for the journey thus far, and we’re trusting Him for even greater days ahead as we seek to incarnate the gospel and distribute the church throughout our community. I AM. Us. For them. There … in Lake County.

ABOUT PASTOR JEREMY Jeremy serves as the new site pastor at Northland’s Lake County Hub. With a background in student ministry, he previously served for seven years as the pastor of worship and mission at an awesome church in central New Jersey. Jeremy holds a degree in Bible and ministry through Bethel College in Indiana and a master’s in Christian leadership through Liberty University. He is madly in love with his beautiful bride, Stephanie, and they enjoy playing Mario Kart and visiting Disney’s water parks with their two amazing sons, Caden and Logan.

The Call to Be Disciples He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.” Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything. – Mark 4:26-34 (NIV)

D

o you remember the last time you looked at a seed? It’s something so common we scarcely pay any attention to it at all. How could something so small hold so much potential? When Jesus reaches for a way to teach us about the kingdom of God, he reaches for a seed. He could reach for the tree or the fruit that grows on the tree, but instead he chooses the seed to make his point. Consider a single apple seed. This seed contains all the compounded possibilities of the entire tree. Every branch and leaf and future apple is contained in the one tiny singular seed. Residing in this one seed are all the trees that will come in the future from the seeds produced by this one seed. I once heard this African proverb: “Anyone can tell you how many seeds are in an apple, but only God knows how many apples are in a seed.” Maybe I’m stating the obvious, and perhaps that’s the point. It’s so easy to miss the mystery because it is obscured by the ordinary. Maybe this is why Jesus is constantly calling forth eyes that see and ears that hear. The truth is shining like a candle on a lamp stand, yet somehow we can miss seeing it entirely. The kingdom is not meant to be hidden but revealed, yet it takes a certain kind of “seeing” to perceive it. What could be more humble than a tiny seed, yet what could be more grand than the tallest tree? This is what God’s kingdom is like, on earth yet from heaven. In fact, this is what Jesus is like, full of humanity and full of the Holy Spirit.

Parables cannot be pinned down, only pondered. They cannot be forced into our categories and systems. They cause us to humble ourselves before a wisdom we would not otherwise discover. A parable leads the curious seeker into the realm of divine revelation. It takes the learner out of control of the knowledge. Parables put everyone on equal footing, stripping away the prestigious academic robes of distinction, withholding understanding from the proud and revealing it to little children. Jesus, the text says, never taught them anything without using a parable. Why is it that we so prize our systematic approaches that try to teach everything without [parables?] Parables bring disciples into a different relationship with learning. They take away from us our penchant to master the material and lead us to the place where we are mastered by the Messiah. A closing thought on seeds from the parables in today’s text: All we do is sow the seed. The seed does everything else. Yet if we do not sow it, it does nothing. That is a massively powerful, obvious, yet hidden, truth. How do you like them apples?

InterVarsity Helping More College Students Learn of God’s Love BY KIM KOI

L

ast November, wandering around the small campus of Daytona State College in DeLand, I discovered the only place for students to gather – a small “break room” with six tables and a small concession stand. As students come and go, briefly stopping here on their way to the next thing in life, there is a strong temptation for them to feel like the “rejects” of the college world – the overlooked, the not good enough to get into a four-year school, the forgotten ones. But God not only sees every student who passes through the hallways of this college; He is pursuing each of them! As I prayed that day, I imagined a diverse group of students gathered under an oak tree in the middle of campus, encountering Jesus in His Word, caring deeply for one another, and creating a place for others on campus to belong and know they too are seen by God. I pictured them laughing and crying, sharing their stories and forming relationships that would last decades. I saw them impacting the campus and bringing a renewed sense of vitality and life through the Good News of the gospel. That day, I was powerfully reminded that every student matters to God. Many years ago, I was one of those students God pursued. My first year of college was hard. I struggled with loneliness and depression, isolation and stress. Then, I found InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Through an InterVarsity small group, I read and fell in love with Scripture; I found a place to belong, where I was loved and accepted; and I learned to lead others and share my faith on campus. I started Rollins with a belief in God; I left Rollins with a deep trust in and relationship with God. Now, as I enter my 14th year working for InterVarsity, I am even more convinced that this mission among college students is the most strategic mission field in the world, as students are transformed and sent out as world-changers. As the area director for Central Florida, I oversee the work on the campuses in Orlando, and Volusia, Brevard and Indian River counties. I have the privilege of seeing and participating with God as students make adult decisions to follow Christ. I see them take steps in leadership on

campus, even in the midst of great fear and trepidation. And I watch them graduate and take their place in the world, as the men and women that God has created them to be. It is amazing that God would allow me to participate in such a great work. In the four short years of college, students make decisions that will impact the next 40 years of their lives. The reality is that three out of four students who grow up in evangelical churches ultimately will decide that faith has no relevance to their lives. Many who grew up attending youth group and worship every week will walk away from their

Christian faith. This is because too often on the university campus, God is ignored and students are taught that believing in God diminishes their ability to think. Yet students are interested in spirituality and are searching for their meaning and purpose in life. That is why InterVarsity exists on college campuses. By being present with students where they are, we can ask the questions “Who is Jesus?” and “Why does that matter to your life?” That November day, the Lord placed a conviction in my heart that InterVarsity will plant a community not only at Daytona State College in DeLand, but also on the 20 other small, forgotten colleges in Central Florida. Because every student matters to God, every campus matters to me. I long to see more Central Florida students and faculty transformed, more campuses renewed and more world-changers developed. It is out of this conviction that I have decided to move to Daytona Beach for a year to plant InterVarsity in Volusia County. It is my dream that this small beginning will grow into a hub of ministry for all the small, remote campuses in the area, where every student has the opportunity to know he or she is seen, known and loved by God. I will continue to serve the whole of Central Florida, from a new home base in Daytona, with special focus on developing a strong foundation for sustainable ministry in Volusia County. I would love for you to join InterVarsity in this kingdom work! If you are a college student, I want to meet you and help mobilize you to have eternal impact while you are in college. InterVarsity provides training, support and

encouragement for you to plant and lead a small group community on your campus. I believe that whatever college you attend, God has called and appointed you to make an impact for His kingdom there. Check out www.ivcfl.com to find your campus, or connect with me at kim.koi@ivcfl.com. If you are a parent of a college student, I pray you will know that God loves your child fiercely and is pursuing him or her relentlessly. Pray that your son or daughter will find a place to belong in a Christian community on campus, where he or she can face the questions and challenges of college among friends. If God has given you a passion for college students, we need your help! While InterVarsity is primarily a studentled ministry, we need faithful followers of Jesus to come alongside those students to support and encourage them as they reach out to their peers. We especially need volunteers on community college campuses. Did your heart start beating a little faster when you read that? If so, email me at kim.koi@ivcfl.com so we can explore how you can impact the world through college students! Please pray for the college students you know and for InterVarsity. As students face an often hostile environment, pray that God would protect them, and pray that He would empower them to make an eternal impact on campus. Pray that their faith would grow deeper and richer as they face questions and challenges. Also, pray for InterVarsity as it plants new communities on the forgotten campuses, particularly in Volusia County. Pray that God would open doors on those campuses and that we would faithfully join Him in His work as He leads. Pray that every student in Central Florida would have the opportunity to encounter and respond to Jesus while in college. Finally, thank you, Northland family, for your faithful support of InterVarsity. There is hope! God is at work on college campuses in Central Florida, and you are partnering with Him to touch the lives of thousands of students every year. I hope someday you will visit Daytona State College in DeLand and find a group of students sitting under a tree, encountering the Lord and impacting the campus. Kim Koi is the InterVarsity area director for Central Florida and a Northland-supported missionary.

Through conferences held several times per year, students and InterVarsity staff (Kim Koi, right) have opportunities to engage in deeper conversations about God and life.

SERVING TO EMPOWER Let the School Supplies Roll In J

oin us for our annual Stuff the Bus drive! We would like to challenge you, your coworkers and your neighbors to fill the bus with school supplies. Then Seminole County Public Schools students will receive the supplies free from their teachers as needed throughout the school year. What do you need to do? Simply drop off the basic school supplies listed here at Northland at Longwood between August 1 and 3. You may place them behind your car with the Red Bag supplies or bring them to the school bus on the property that weekend.

Supplies Needed: Crayons (24-pack) Pocket folders Colored pencils (12-pack) Glue sticks Loose-leaf paper Rulers Composition notebooks Pencil packs Pink block erasers Markers (8- to 10-pack)

Questions? Contact Judy Head at judy.head@ northlandchurch.net or 407-388-5798.

Fill a Bag, Feed a Child, Stop Childhood Hunger

I

t’s Red Bag time again! We need your help to stock the food pantry for two Seminole County schools for the 2015-16 school year. Each item you purchase and return to Northland goes directly into the nondescript backpacks for the students to take home for the weekend. It is heartbreaking that we have children in our communities going to bed hungry. The constant struggle to find food just to survive affects everyone in the family. While these children receive breakfast and lunch at school Mondays through Fridays, they often go without food on the weekends. The Red Bag Program was developed through the collaborative effort of Seminole County Public Schools and local churches to meet those needs. Food pantries were set up in the local schools to provide for these students each week. According to Families in Transition (FIT), last school year, there were 2,001 homeless students in Seminole County Public Schools, an 11.5 percent decrease from the 2,236 in 2013.

Providing for the needs of the children is paramount; however, preserving their dignity is important as well. Opportunities exist for families and students to assist in packing, sorting and sometimes delivering the food to others. Rather than creating dependency, the Red Bag Project hopes to empower the family to move on and no longer need the services of the food pantry. In 2014, we collected 18,700 pounds of food that was distributed to Winter Springs Elementary School and Milwee Middle School. We fell a little short of the need this year and hope that you will help us meet our goal of 20,000 pounds in 2015! What You Can Do Pick up your bag in the lobby of Northland at Longwood after each worship service July 25 through 27, and then return the filled bag the next weekend; just leave it behind your car. It’s that simple. Questions? Contact Judy Head at judy.head@northlandchurch.net or 407-388-5798.

MAKE A CONNECTION … It’s Summer, but Fall Is Right Around the Corner BY REBECCA LANG

S

ummer has just begun, but Northland’s fall calendar is filling up fast with lots of great classes and events. Whether you’re looking to become a member, learn more about managing your finances or have fun with the whole family, there’s a lot to look forward to once summer is gone. Following are just a few of the events we have in store. We’re kicking off fall with Finding Financial Freedom, a First Principles Study. This study will transform your life and finances as you learn what the God of the universe says about handling money. This study is for everyone, whether single or married, young or old, and whether you earn a lot or a little. The Lord has used these principles in the lives of millions of people around the world. More details will be in next month’s issue of Respond.

A gathering to celebrate the volunteers who serve our church family. We close out August with our third Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. Every year hundreds of volunteers across all ministry departments gather for an early breakfast, fun and fellowship. We have raffle giveaways, thanks to some generous donors, and Dr. Hunter stops by to give a word of encouragement and thanks. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet volunteers from other ministry areas and share stories. We are so grateful for all of our volunteers! If you’d like to learn more about volunteering at the Longwood site, check out northlandchurch.net/ volunteer. Our next Belong membership seminar is Saturday, September 12. If you’re interested in membership at Northland, we hope you’ll join us. Find out why so many of us are excited to be part of the Northland family and how you can be part of it too!

Attending the seminar doesn’t commit you to joining Northland. It’s just an opportunity to hear from Pastor Joel and other church leaders about the role Northland has in bringing “up there down here.” So if you or someone you know is curious about Northland and wondering what it means to belong, then we hope you’ll join us. Child care is available too! To sign up, visit calendar.northlandchurch.net/ event/belong_one-day_membership_seminar. We are super excited to be bringing back the Northland 5K! This year we’re partnering with 121Hope, Northland’s response to human trafficking. 121Hope brings hope to victims and survivors of human trafficking and empowers local abolitionists, all through one-to-one discipleship. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the anti-human trafficking efforts of our partner ministry ConnectCity. This is a family-friendly 5K family event complete with chipped timing and awards for each age category. Mark your calendars for September 26, and check out next month’s Respond for more details. These are just a few events that you and your family can join, and we hope you will! You can see a full list of all of the events, classes and studies Northland has to offer at calendar.northlandchurch.net. If you’re looking to get connected with others in our church family, or if your focus is to grow more deeply in your walk with Christ, there are many options to help you do that. If you have questions about these events or how you might get more involved at Northland, contact Rebecca Lang at 407-937-1807 or rebecca.lang@northlandchurch. net.

Hundreds of runners sing the national anthem before the start of the Northland 5K. Pastor Jeff Bell (r) and Dave Saphirstein (l) finish strong and all smiles.

1 Peter 1:18-20 (NLT) For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives. All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47). Are you interested in learning more? We would love to help you. Together we can form the church outside the walls of a building and bring God’s love to the world. Start the journey toward being the church at one of the Intro to Distributing the Church sessions. Sign up for a session at The Hub or at distributedchurch.com.
