people so that we can follow Him together and be His light in the world.

SCRIPTURE FOCUS:

Ephesians 4:1 (NIV) As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them.

True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:1939; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

In Acts 2, Luke gives us a beautiful snapshot of what the first-century church looked like. The Holy Spirit has arrived on the scene, Peter has proclaimed the gospel, and the people have responded — 3,000 were added to their number. Then, almost as if pausing the action, Luke makes sure we know what this newly born church does together.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (Acts 2:42, NIV) So what about today? If Luke were writing this section today, what would he say?

We have a pretty good handle on what the church looks like when it gathers on a Sunday morning. But what about the other six days of the week? What does it look like as people form the church in the midst of their everyday lives, outside the walls of the building?

We’ve observed three types of personal churches that initially take shape, as well as six practices of personal churches do together regardless of the type. We share these in the hope that it will bring clarity as you form the church in your context.

When they see an opportunity to love or serve, they do it. They know that the mission of God isn’t limited to religious institutions. The professionals are helpful, but ministry is something they all do.

Some people are good at hospitality, some are good at building relationships, some people are especially good at prayer, and so on.

They all chip in, and they value what each person has to offer.

They do the things they know to do – prayer, Bible study, evangelism, service and more – but rather than doing these things by themselves, or parallel with other believers, they do them together.

They share meals together, care for one another’s children, pray for one another, help one another, have fun together, join in suffering together, and are available when someone needs to talk about difficult things.

THE UNINCLUDED

Jesus changed their lives by His forgiveness, and now they live in grace and freedom. So as they go to work, school or wherever God leads them, they look for the opportunity to build relationships and invite new people into this family.

THE SACRED PRACTICES

Like the church has done since the beginning, these people share the Lord’s Supper, baptize new believers, value and study the Scriptures, pray together, and share the love of Jesus in words and actions.

At Northland’s Ukrainian partner church, New Life, members motivated by the love of Jesus and compassion for their countrymen travel the 15-hour drive from Kiev to the war-stricken eastern regions of Ukraine. Whether hosting a church service over the sounds of bombing and shooting, distributing seeds and baby chicks to hungry families, or rehabilitating traumatized children, New Life members are seeking to minister to the most broken in their country.

Leading the way is Igor, a man in his 40’s with purpose in his step and vitality in his eyes, especially when he talks about his experiences in front line communities. Since the war started in April 2014, he and other volunteers have invested in building relationships with churches on both sides of the fire line. Through mutual effort, these churches and New Life members seek to bring messages of hope and restoration to those who remain in these villages. While more than 1 million people have fled the front lines, those who remain, according to Igor, have tender and open hearts to Jesus’ love. This is what motivates people like Igor to visit the war zone weekly.

Following, Igor tells stories about his experiences on the front lines.

Northland: From what you’ve seen and what you are doing in the East of Ukraine, what is it like for the people who live there?

Igor: We have met a lot of people who live in the war zone and can’t leave for various reasons. Some financially cannot afford to travel, while for others, it is too dangerous to leave.

They have a lot of problems on their minds and hearts, as well as physical health problems. There is no medical aid, many are starving, and children and adults alike are suffering from PTSD and trauma.

The UN and other aid organizations recognize the extreme crisis amongst these communities. Specifically to PTSD, they are trying to distribute drugs and medicines to “cure” children affected by PTSD. We recognize that those children may be addicted to those drugs for the rest of their lives. We believe that only Jesus can bring them the peace they need so they can sleep well each night.

Northland: How is New Life responding to what you are describing?

Igor: These people are absolutely ready to accept Jesus’ love, so we try to share His love with them through helping them and building relationships with them. But our help is in two parts. The first part includes the practical — delivering food and clothing. Now, we are helping in a more holistic way. We want to help the people not just by giving them food every day, but we want to develop their personal skills so they can care for themselves.

One way we are doing this is through distributing vegetable seeds to families so they can grow their own food. In April, Northland contributed to this project from their Children’s Ministries offering. Thank you, Northland, for this contribution! You have touched the lives of individuals who feel forgotten. A new project we’ve started is distributing baby chicks to families so their diet can be more complete.

Today we are seeing the first results of these efforts!

These recipients of aid ask us, “Who is your boss who told you to come help us?” Of course, we respond that our boss is God! There was no earthly boss — only Jesus — who motivated us to come and help you.

All the people in the war zone have major problems in their lives and very little hope. I have not met a single person who has said, “No, I do not want to know more about Jesus’ love.” People there have tender hearts to His love and are absolutely ready to grow in their faith.

We have started a tent church in a community just 500 meters from the line of conflict. You can hear gunfire during the services, yet people in the community have been gathering there each morning to pray. In another region along the front, a church grew from six members to more than 50 over the course of a few months. This growth came from the seed project, as we partnered with that church to distribute seeds to the community. Then the church members returned on a weekly basis to each family and offered to pray for them. The fruit of their labor brings so much joy to my heart!

Help Your Community Without Hurting I

ntentions to serve those in need are usually good. But how do you go about making sure your time, donations and work are actually helping the poor, and not hurting?

We have learned that poverty alleviation starts with a process in which people, both the materially poor and nonpoor, move closer to living in right relationships with God, self, others and the rest of creation, according to the book “When Helping Hurts.”

When these relationships are established and functioning properly, people are able to fulfill God’s calling in their lives. The most important part of serving through Red Bag and Stuff the Bus is not completely the material items collected, but also the opportunity for teachers and guidance counselors to draw students and parents into a deeper, more impactful relationship. It is through these relationships that lasting change can take place in the lives of people.

Let the School Supplies Roll In

oin us for our annual Stuff the Bus drive! This year we would like to challenge you, your coworkers and your neighborhoods to fill the bus with school supplies. Each year, all school supplies that are collected are donated to Seminole County Public Schools. Then these supplies are passed out to students identified by their teachers and guidance counselors. As needs arise, teachers will have the ability to keep students on track by equipping them with basic school supplies.

How It Works Following is a list of school supplies that students need throughout the year. You are welcome to purchase any or all of the items and simply drop them off at Northland at Longwood from August 6 through 8. You may place the items behind your car with the Red Bag food supplies or bring them to the school bus on the property that weekend.

Red Bag Is Back

I

t’s Red Bag time again! We need your help to stock the food pantry for two Seminole County schools for the 2016-17 school year. Each item you purchase and return to Northland goes directly into the nondescript backpacks for the students to take home for the weekend.

It is heartbreaking that we have children in our communities going to bed hungry. The constant struggle to find food just to survive affects everyone in the family. While these children receive breakfast and lunch at school Mondays through Fridays, they often go without food on the weekends. The Red Bag Project is a collaborative effort of Seminole County Public Schools and local churches to meet those needs. Food pantries were set up in local schools to provide for these students each week.

According to Families in Transition (FIT), last school year, there were 2,001 homeless students in Seminole County Public Schools, an 11.5 percent decrease from the 2,236 in 2013.

Providing for the needs of the children is paramount; however, preserving their dignity is important as well.

Opportunities exist for families and students to assist in packing, sorting and delivering the food to others. Rather than creating dependency, the Red Bag Project hopes to empower the family to move on and no longer need the services of the food pantry.

In 2015, we collected 12,673 pounds of food, which was distributed to Winter Springs Elementary School and Milwee Middle School. We fell a little short of the need last year and hope that you will help us meet our goal of 20,000 pounds in 2016!

Items Requested for Schools Although we appreciate the generosity of everyone, we need specific items in order to pack the proper weekend bag of food for each child. Keep in mind, no glass, frozen or perishable items are accepted. CARE Center Welcomes Team Member

I

n June, the CARE Center welcomed its newest member to the team. Rebecca Lang joins us as the Community Resource Network director, coordinating and leading a team focused on impacting homelessness in Seminole County. Her work includes recruiting and mobilizing churches to identify, catalog and provide resources that wrap around families and individuals that have recently been placed into homes.

Partnering with Seminole County Public Schools and other nonprofits, the goal of the faith community is to holistically approach the care of these folks as they transition from the streets to homes, looking beyond the immediate need(s) to address the deepest needs that affect them — emotional, mental and spiritual. While meeting these needs, efforts also are centered on helping these families build social capital and a sense of belonging in their communities, creating connections, broadening and building their relationships, and expanding the network they eventually will be immersed in on the path toward selfsufficiency and sustainable living.

Helping You Take Your Next Step

I

t’s summertime in Central Florida — and it’s hot! Summer is not only a time of great heat and greater humidity, but the kids are out of school and many families are making vacation plans. Fantastic! Did you know summer is also a great time to take new steps in your faith journey?

I know what you’re thinking, that you’d expect a pastor to say that, that anytime is a great time to take new spiritual steps. And you’re right!

That’s why each week and at every opportunity, we have a fantastic Congregational Engagement Team working to serve and resource you well as you look for new ways to grow and live out your faith.

One of the key statements we use to describe what we do as a team is “help people move from disconnected to distributed.” Helping you get connected — to God, to others, and to the unique mission and calling God has on your life — is a big focus of our team. And it’s a great source of joy!

To strengthen our efforts in this area, we’ve recently added a member to the team. We’re excited to introduce Thomas Blevins as our Minister of Mobilization! Thomas will be no stranger to those involved at our Oviedo hub, where he has served so well for several years. To help others get to know him better, I sat down recently with Thomas and got the scoop on him and his wonderful family.

Jeff: Thomas, we’re thrilled to have you join our team! So tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Thomas: I’m a Michigander, and my wife, Tyler, was born in Taipei, Taiwan. There are lots of stories about how our first date happened, but you’ll have to ask her about the real one! This past May was our 10th anniversary! We have two daughters together, Emma Grace and Ella Jay, and they make our days messy and beautiful. The girls attend Circle Christian and would love to give you a high five anytime they see you!

invest in me and help me see some of these gifts. Several weeks ago, Pastor Joel spoke on three categories of gifts: motivational, administrative and manifested. I’ve found that my motivational gift is exhortation, my administrative gift is apostle, with pastor right next to it, and my manifested gift is faith. We’ll all have moments that we’ll see another gift come out of us, but these are the characteristics that show up most for me.

Jeff: That’s super insightful. And you’ll be serving as our new Minister of Mobilization. Awesome! So … what exactly does that mean you’ll be doing?

Thomas: It sounds like a hefty title, but it’s really built around me having the privilege of helping people feel like they are loved and belong, and find their gifts so that they can use them every day. Northland is a family of spiritual families. Our hope is to continue to create ways for people who are part of this family to see how God has uniquely made them and help them move toward using them for the benefit of others. You’ll probably find me in The Hub and all over the foyer on weekends, and occasionally at Papa Bees, helping people experience their next steps.

Jeff: Wait. That was important. Have a favorite wing sauce at Papa Bees?

Thomas: Spicy teriyaki, extra crispy.

(Jeff’s note: The best sauce flavor at Papa Bees is a mix of medium garlic and lemon pepper. But we’ll forgive Thomas on this one.)

Jeff: When you think about what God is doing through Northland right now, what excites you most?

Thomas: One of the most exciting things I see is how

people are truly being the church together throughout the week. There are already over 70 churches that are actively pursuing God and others because of what God is doing through Northland, and I can only imagine this will grow exponentially as we continue to invite people into the great story of Jesus.

Jeff: You have a free afternoon to do anything you want.

How do you spend it?

Thomas: Family is a big deal to us. We’re beach fans and love the ocean. Surfing. Boogie-boarding. Almost anything outdoors. Oh, Tijuana Flats. That’s a way you can spend the afternoon, right? We bought bikes a couple months ago, and we’re really enjoying riding the trails in Seminole County.

Jeff: Anything else we just gotta know about you?

Thomas: No matter how much pain I may have endured through the years, I remain a true Detroit sports fan. Tigers, Lions, Red Wings. Oh, and go Blue!

Jeff: Awesome! Describe your journey in getting connected at Northland?

Thomas: When I first moved to Orlando in 2002, I was introduced to Northland. I attended periodically for a little over a year. Tyler has been part of Northland since she was a teenager. When Tyler and I began dating in 2004, we would attend together every week. I took her away around 2005 so that I could serve as a youth pastor for a church in downtown Orlando. Around the end of 2013, Jeremy Jobson contacted me about a student and family ministry position at our Oviedo site, and I came on board in January 2014.

Jeff: We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts on the weekends lately. Any idea what your spiritual gifts are?

Thomas: Man, it’s been refreshing to hear that each and every one of us has been given gifts from God. I think for many of us, we walk through life thinking we have nothing to give because of what we’ve done or where we’ve been.

But that’s where it gets exciting because they’re gifts; we don’t earn them. Once we get around that idea and see that God has placed His nature within us to reflect His image, we experience great passion and satisfaction in sharing them. I’ve had several people during my life

The camp’s goal is to encourage young artists in their faith and in using their gifts, specifically by developing talents, reflecting upon their own part in God’s story, and growing in effective and authentic expressions of worship. The young artists focused on Christ as our bridge to God. The week culminated in an evening of celebration called The Bridge. Through music, dance and acting, the young artists illustrated how Christ made a way for us to be connected forever with God. An offering was collected to support Trauma Healing in Central Florida in partnership with the American Bible Society, serving communities all over the world in the aftermath of tragedies.

Afterward, families viewed the Young Artists Gallery, featuring works created during visual arts, photography, mixed media, sculpture, painting and songwriting classes.

Through the arts, not only do we express our thoughts and feelings; we influence our world. Encourage the young artists in your community!

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have seven grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke, Lena, and Ava (2004-2010).

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
